fortifications at the site of the Battle of Dam No.1. This engagement was Union
Major General McClellan’s only attempt to break through the Confederate
defenses along the Warwick River. Built by Confederate Major General Magruder,
these fortifications stymied McClellan’s grand advance against Richmond. In
addition, the famous “Battle of the Ironclads” took place off the shores of Newport
News in March of 1862. The battle between the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia
(Merrimack) ended in a draw, yet the Virginia’s existence denied General McClellan
use of the James River during the early stages of the war.
World War I
The US Army designated the city of
Newport News as a Port of Embarkation
immediately after the United States
entered World War I. With its great
shipyard and its railroad running straight
into a highly sophisticated system of piers,
pier terminals and warehouses, it seemed that
shipyard founder, Collis P. Huntington, had
invented the port for wartime use. Because
city residents responded with tremendous
patriotic energy to cater to every soldier’s need,
it was said that Newport News was selected not
for its key geographic location, but “solely on
ESCORT NOTES
An Unusual Name With An Unusual History
No one knows for sure where Newport News got its
name, but “Newportes Newes” first appears in the
Virginia Company records in 1619. The most widely
accepted folktale is that the city is the namesake of
Captain Christopher Newport, commander of Susan
Constant, flagship of the three-ship English fleet
that landed on Jamestown Island in 1607. He made
several voyages to Newport News in the early days
of the Jamestown Colony, bringing
“good news” of supplies and settlers.
Newport News Facts
Newport News today is approximately
23 miles long and three miles wide, encompassing
70.38 square miles. It is the fourth largest city by
acreage and the fifth largest city by population in the
Commonwealth of Virginia. Coincidentally, the first
through third largest cities by population are Virginia
Beach, Norfolk and Chesapeake. Many of our citizens
are assigned to the various military installations in the
area and Northrop Grumman Newport News is one
of the largest maritime yards in the world, employing
approximately 21,000 people.
Civil War
Newport News played a major role in the 1862
Peninsula Campaign during the Civil War. Visitors
can view some of the most extensive earthwork
14 15
the industry of her people.” Numerous camps were set up to send the “doughboys”
overseas to fight in World War I. The final major military base formed was Camp
(and later Fort) Eustis, named after the founder of Fort Monroe’s Artillery School
of Practice and a veteran of the War of 1812, Brigadier General Abraham Eustis.
The camp was created in 1918 to meet the need for an artillery firing range.
World War II
Newport News has always been willing to step up when there was a job
to be done. On September 12, 1940, the SS Quanza carrying more than 80
Jewish refugees from Hitler’s oppression, arrived to take on coal after being
refused entry because of invalid visas by Vera Cruz, Mexico and New York City.
A Newport News maritime attorney, Jacob Morewitz, came to their rescue,
filing an injunction to delay the ship’s departure. This allowed others to
plead the refugees’ case before Congress, the State Department and even
First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Finally the refugees were granted 60-day
visas, leading to their eventual salvation from the Holocaust. Newport News’
mission during World War II was to load ships with men and supplies that were
needed overseas and to keep building ships to win the war. The Hampton
Roads Port of Embarkation, headquartered in Newport News, was one of
eight major ports of embarkation that functioned as “faucets to fill the military
pipeline.” Camp Patrick Henry was established as a
staging area for troops in 1942, in the area where
Mary Immaculate Hospital and the Newport News/
Williamsburg International Airport now stand. It
could handle up to 35,000 troops preparing to leave
or returning from war. Another first for Newport
News was the establishment of a Prisoner of War
(POW) Work Camp at the Port of Embarkation. The
POWs were utilized for a multitude of tasks such as
kitchen patrol, laundry and salvage duties to help
relieve the extensive manpower shortage.
Climate
Crisp autumn air, snow flurries in the park, warm
spring showers or a sunbather’s paradise—Newport
News enjoys all four seasons, and best of all,
they are celebrated in moderation. We average
45 degrees from November to March, but we do
have an occasional snowfall making our parks a
winter wonderland. July is our warmest month, but
the offshore breeze keeps the waterside pleasant.
And we average just less than four inches of rain per
month … ALL YEAR! You’ll experience clear skies
and comfortable temperatures for most of your stay
in Newport News.
Industry
Collis P. Huntington, a northern railroad tycoon
from Connecticut, brought the Chesapeake and
Ohio Railroad to Newport News. Regular rail service
commenced on May 1, 1882. The first passenger
train left Richmond at seven in the morning and
arrived in Newport News at seven that night. Lee
Hall Mansion, home of Richard Decauter Lee, gave
its name to a small village which today forms the
upper boundary of the city. In Lee Hall Village, a
one-room railway station provided residents access
to Newport News or Richmond, and from there
to anywhere. Huntington next sought to build
a shipyard to repair the ships servicing the
transportation hub. It was originally called the
Chesapeake Drydock & Construction Company
when chartered in 1886. By 1891, the name had
changed to Newport News Shipbuilding and it
delivered its first ship: a tugboat named Dorothy.
By 1897, they had built three warships. With the
coming of war, the production at the shipyard
increased. Historic Hilton Village, an enclave of 500
English cottage-style homes, was built between
1918 and 1920 to provide war-time housing for
shipyard workers, who delivered 25 destroyers to
the US Navy. Newport News Shipbuilding began
producing aircraft carriers in the 1930s. The first
nuclear submarine was launched in 1959, and the
first nuclear aircraft carrier was launched in 1960.
Newport News Shipbuilding signed a merger
agreement with Northrop Grumman in 2001, thus
changing its name to Northrop Grumman Newport
News. With 115 years of experience under her belt,
Northrop Grumman Newport News has become the
premiere shipyard for aircraft carriers, submarines
and fleet services to the military.
Street Names And Signpost
Warwick County, Warwick Boulevard and the Warwick River were all named
for Sir Robert Rich, the Second Earl of Warwick. Rich was a Virginia Company
stockholder and was appointed by King James I as Royal Administrator to
the colony of Virginia in 1624. J. Clyde Morris Boulevard was named for a
dedicated public servant, J. Clyde Morris, who spent 32 years in public service
helping oversee the tremendous expansion of municipal services to meet the
needs of this growing community. Jefferson Avenue was named for Thomas
Jefferson, a Virginia statesman and third President of the United States.
And Another Thing...
Hampton Roads Harbor, located at the confluence of the James and Elizabeth
Rivers and the Chesapeake Bay, is one of the world’s largest natural harbors.
The Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, which connects Newport News
and Suffolk, was completed in April, 1992, at a cost of $800 million. It provides
an alternate route to those using the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel or the
James River Bridge. The Cardinal is the state bird and the Dogwood is the
state tree. There is an abundance of both found in beautiful Newport News!

ENDVIEW PLANTATION
The three wars fought on American soil have all left
traces at Endview Plantation. The Revolutionary War
brought 3,000 militia to its fresh-water spring. The War
of 1812 saw its use as a training ground, while the Civil
War found Endview serving as a Confederate Captain’s
home and a hospital for both sides. Built in 1769,
Endview was home to members of the Harwood
and Curtis families. An ongoing archaeological program
and historic maps have identified the locations of
several outbuildings. Artifacts from the site, as well
as pictures and memorabilia of the Harwood family,
are also on display.

JAMES A. FIELDS HOUSE
James Apostles Fields was born a slave in Hanover
County, Virginia, and found refuge at Fort Monroe
during the Civil War as “contraband of war.” In 1871,
Mr. Fields was one of the first 20 pupils to graduate
from Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute
(now Hampton University). He continued his
education and in 1881, graduated from the School
of Law at Howard University. Fields served as
the Commonwealth’s Attorney and the first black
Sheriff for Warwick County (now Newport News).
Fields also served in the Virginia General Assembly in
1889. In 1908, a team of four doctors purchased the
Fields home and pioneered the first black hospital in
the city of Newport News.

LEE HALL MANSION
THE MARINERS’ MUSEUM
Completed in 1859, Lee Hall Mansion was home to affluent planter Richard Decauter Lee, his wife Martha and their children. One of the
last remaining antebellum homes on the Virginia Peninsula, Lee Hall Mansion was used as headquarters by Confederate Major General
John B. Magruder and General Joseph E. Johnston during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign. Today, guided tours of this beautifully restored
home give a glimpse back into the lives of a wealthy family during the 1860s. In addition to the home, view hundreds of artifacts,
including a tablecloth from the USS Monitor, displayed in the museum’s 1862 Peninsula Campaign Gallery.
Designated by Congress as America’s National Maritime Museum, The
Mariners’ Museum is home to the premier Civil War attraction in the country—
the USS Monitor Center. This dramatic 63,500-square-foot facility will enthrall
families with exciting exhibits, bring students face-to-face with history and
offer historians rich resources for research. With its additional 60,000-square-
feet of gallery space, other adventures await. Sit in an aircraft-carrier-ready
room, examine artifacts pulled from the Titanic, explore the International
Small Craft Collection and be amazed by rare figureheads, paintings and the
renowned miniature ships of August and Winifred Crabtree. “…one of the
finest nautical museums in the country …” The Washington Post.

THE NEWSOME HOUSEMUSEUM & CULTURAL CENTER
PENINSULA COMMUNITY THEATRE
At the turn of the 20th century, the J. Thomas Newsome
family moved to Newport News. In this industrial city,
he established a law practice and prospered as part
of the postwar South’s new, urban, black middle class.
Through self-determination and a solid education,
Newsome (1869–1942) became a respected attorney,
journalist, churchman and civic leader. His elegant
Queen Anne residence served as the hub of the
local black community, from which he led the fight
for social justice within the Commonwealth. Today,
this restored 1899 Victorian landmark continues to
be devoted to the expression of historical and black
cultural themes.
In the early 1950’s, the Newport News Little Theatre and the Hampton
Little Theatre merged to form what is now the Peninsula Community
Theatre (PCT). In 1994, PCT purchased the Village Theater, an art deco
movie house located in historic Hilton Village (author William Styron
worked there as a lad). In just 61 days, the movie theater was converted
into a setting for live stage productions. PCT offers musicals, comedies
and mysteries each year in their five-production season (August–May)
and their Children’s Theatre also features five productions. Their main
goal is to offer a venue for local talent to perform.

ADDITIONAL CIVIL WAR SITES
JAMES RIVER RESERVE FLEET
JAMES RIVER BRIDGE FISHING PIER
Over 145 years ago, the woods and waters of Newport News echoed with sounds of the Civil
War—the tramp of thousands of boots along the Great Warwick Road, the thunder of cannons and
the crack of rifle fire, the shout of orders and the cries of the wounded and the dying. The Newport
News Civil War guide describes the Congress and Cumberland Overlook, the Monitor-Merrimac
Overlook, Young’s Mill, the Warwick County Courthouse, the Battle of Lee’s Mill, the Battle of Dam
No.1 and Skiffes Creek, all Civil War sites in Newport News. Contact the Newport News Tourism
Development Office for your free Civil War guide today.
Located at Fort Eustis Army Base ~ Commonly known as “The Ghost Fleet,”
the over 35 retired Navy and merchant ships anchored here once carried cargo,
missiles, rescue equipment, helicopters, satellite-tracking devices and troops
around the globe.
6701 River Road (Exit 258A or 263A from I-64) ~ At 9/10 of a mile, this is one of the longest
fishing piers on the East Coast. It is open from April through November. Croaker and Spot are
caught year-round, while Striped Bass, Flounder, Gray Trout and Red Drum are caught seasonally.
Bait shop, some tackle & snacks are available. The pier is adjacent to the Crab Shack Restaurant.
There is a fee (includes daily fishing license fee). Hours: Sun-Thu from 7 am to midnight; Fri & Sat:
24 hours a day. 757.247.0364
OTHER POINTS OFINTEREST
From retired ships to Civil War cannons, Newport News and
the surrounding areas have a lot of American history to offer. In
addition, catch a fish off one of the East Coast’s longest fishing
piers or stow your boat at the well-equipped marina.
26 27
THE MATTHEW JONES HOUSETaylor Avenue and Harrison Road at Fort Eustis (Exit 250A from I-64) ~ Although compromised
by alterations over the past 100 years, this house provides a rare glimpse into the changing
social ambitions of the Virginia gentry and is an extraordinary example of an all-but-lost building
tradition—the earthfast house. It is the second oldest earthfast structure still standing in Virginia.
As initially constructed in 1720, the frame of the house rests on structural posts extending into
the ground and no foundation was built. Pre-arranged tours can be scheduled Monday through
Friday from 8 am to 4 pm. 757.878.5381
VICTORY ARCH25th Street and West Avenue (Exit 7 from I-664) ~ During WWI, Newport News was designated
as one of two Ports of Embarkation (the other was New York City) where 261,820 soldiers left for
overseas. At the end of WWI, Peninsula residents chose to celebrate those who would return and
commemorate those who would not. They constructed a Victory Arch at the site where so many
had passed through. The Victory Arch, a plaster and wooden structure built in 1919, was designed
after the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and reconstructed in 1962. Over 441,000 WWI soldiers returned
through this memorial. Over $6,000 was raised to erect the monument. The Arch serves today as
a memorial with an eternal flame for all men and women of the Armed Forces.
LEEWARD MUNICIPAL MARINA
7499 River Road (Exits 258A or 263A from I-64) ~ Leeward Marina is conveniently located on
the James River, at the base of the James River Bridge. From this centralized location, you will
find easy access to the Hampton Roads Harbor and the Chesapeake Bay. Leeward Marina has
floating docks, full-length piers and three concrete seawalls to provide protection from severe
weather. Two-hundred slips are equipped with water and electrical hookups and patrolled
by security personnel after hours. The fuel dock offers
full-service fueling with diesel and unleaded gasoline
and houses a sewage pump-out system. The marina
has restrooms with showers and changing areas.
Slip rental agreements are available for daily,
monthly and annual periods.

1862 PENINSULA CAMPAIGN
Only weeks after the first shots of the Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter, the woods and waters of Newport News would echo with the sounds
of battle as she played an important role in the 1862 Peninsula Campaign. Newport News saw the world’s first battle between the ironclad
ships, the awarding of two Medals of Honor, a growing role for African-Americans in the United States military and one woman who, disguised
as a male soldier, fought for her country. Today, when you tour the Civil War of Newport News, the stories of the famous and the unknown are
told at each site along the way.
DAY 1: On March 8 and 9, 1862, Newport News, along with the rest of the world, witnessed naval history when the USS Monitor and the
CSS Virginia, new ironclads, dueled each other on the James River. Learn about their imprint on history as you tour The Mariners’ Museum
and the USS Monitor Center; the official repository for artifacts and archives from the USS Monitor. Lunch is on your own in Historic Hilton
Village, originally built to house Newport News Shipyard workers during World War I and America’s first federally subsidized, planned
community. Then witness, first hand, the waters where this historic battle took place at the Monitor-Merrimac Overlook. Enjoy dinner at
your hotel this evening.
DAY 2: Take an early morning exploration to see original earthen fortifications at Causey’s Mill, Young’s Mill, Lee’s Mill and at Newport News
Park’s Battle of Dam No. 1. Then meet a figure from the past when you attend one of our Civil War re-enactments or living history programs at
Endview Plantation or Lee Hall Mansion. Completed in 1769, Endview Plantation was owned by Dr. Humphrey Harwood Curtis during the 1862
Peninsula Campaign. During this time, the home was used briefly as a Confederate hospital
and was then occupied by Union forces until the end of the war. Lee Hall Mansion is
the only large, mid-nineteenth century, plantation house remaining on Virginia’s lower
Peninsula. This home, built between 1851 and 1859, was used as Confederate
headquarters during the Campaign. This evening you’ll discover the taste of the
South with your themed dinner at The Boxwood Inn. This historic 110+ year-old
bed and breakfast was built in 1896 and served as the Warwick County Hall of
Records, a general store, a post office and a hotel for soldiers during
both World Wars.
DAY 3: This morning, visit the James A. Fields
House before departing for home. Mr.
Fields was born a slave in Hanover County,
Virginia, and in 1862, he and his brother
escaped slavery and found refuge at Fort
Monroe. This house was used by Mr. Fields
as his law office and primary residence from
1897 to 1903.

NEWPORT NEWS IS FOR WINE LOVERS
HERITAGE, HISTORY & WINE IN NEWPORT NEWS
DAY 1: Arrive in Newport News, Virginia and enjoy a windshield tour to see where Ella
Fitzgerald and Pearl Bailey were born. Then, tour The Newsome House Museum &
Cultural Center, a restored 1899 Queen Anne residence of African-American attorney,
J. Thomas Newsome. This evening, “party with the animals” as you enjoy fine wines,
mirco-brews, great food and live music during the Annual Bacchus Wine & Food Festival
at the Virginia Living Museum.
DAY 2: Visit the James A. Fields House, home to the eminently successful James A. Fields
after the Civil War and home to the first hospital for blacks in the city. Next, succulent
scents of the south fill the air as you arrive at the Train Station for a spectacular crab and
southern buffet luncheon! Our last stop before departing for home is the Virginia War
Museum. Join us as we “Salute the Tuskegee Airmen” with original members discussing
artifacts on display.
Newport News celebrates fine wine,
micro-brews, great food and live
music during two special events
every year. On the first Friday in
February, the Virginia Living Museum
hosts their Annual Bacchus Wine
& Food Festival and on the second
Saturday of June, Lee Hall Mansion
hosts the Summer Celebration Wine
Festival. We have put together two
creative and fun sample itineraries for
your groups to enjoy.
FEBRUARY 4-5, 2011, FEBRUARY 3-4, 2012
40 41
DAY 1: Arrive in Newport News, Virginia and sail through 3,000 years of maritime history at The
Mariners’ Museum, home to the premier Civil War attraction in the country—the USS Monitor Center.
After your tour, it’s dinner time with an authentic Civil War meal, and we ain’t talking “hardtack”
here! Start off with peanut soup, then enjoy our traditionally baked Virginia ham and don’t forget
dessert—Civil War Idiot’s Delight, a dessert so fool-proof that even an idiot can make it!
DAY 2: The next day, enjoy our Summer Celebration Wine Festival at Lee Hall Mansion. Sample a
variety of Virginia wines in a truly historic setting of this 1859 home, once used as headquarters by
Confederate generals during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign. Live music, living history, food, wine and
gift vendors!
DAY 3: Enjoy breakfast with today’s soldiers at the Officer’s Club of Fort Eustis. Then before
departing for home, explore the world of Army transportation from steam locomotives of days past
to the experimental rocket belt at the
US Army Transportation Museum.

THE HOLIDAY LIGHTS OF TIDEWATER AND THE HAMPTON ROADS REGION
Millions of lights and hundreds of holiday events! Drive-through and walk-through light shows, lighted boat parades,
city illuminations, music festivals, theatrical performances and living history re-enactments are among the many holiday
events taking place in Richmond, Williamsburg, Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach.
DAY 1: Arrive at the Virginia Living Museum and take part in their traditional holiday planetarium show
Star of Wonder. Then discover the world of art at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, where diverse
artworks and dynamic exhibitions that change every few months are just part of the fun. And
don’t miss their annual Artful Giving! Here you’ll find unique, diverse, handmade arts, crafts
and usual imports for all your holiday season shopping needs. Enjoy Dickens Christmas
Dinner at The Boxwood Inn featuring the Doorway Singers. Or take part in Newport News’
Hollydazzle the first Friday evening in December. Hampton Roads’ most unique award-
winning holiday event combines fireworks, special effects and music in a spectacular show
presented “in the round” on the Fountain Plaza.
DAY 2: This morning, experience a Colonial Christmas as you tour Jamestown Settlement
and compare English Christmas customs with how the season may have been observed
during the difficult years of the Jamestown Colony. After lunch on your own in their café,
depart for a tour of Colonial Williamsburg. Enjoy dinner this evening at one of many
restaurants located throughout the Patrick Henry Mall area in Newport News before Oleta
Coach Lines escorts you through Lights Galore. This evening, be prepared to see over a
million lights as you drive through Newport News’ Celebration in Lights, Norfolk’s Botanical
Garden’s Garden of Lights and Virginia Beach’s Holiday Lights at the Boardwalk—a night full of
holiday spirit. Or have dinner in one of Colonial Williamsburg’s authentic taverns and take part in their
Grand Illumination the first Sunday evening in December. Welcome the holiday season with candles, fireworks
and music for an 18th century celebration.
DAY 3: Before departing for home, enjoy a tour of Lee Hall Mansion, decorated for the holidays in mid-19th century style
for their Antebellum Holidays. This guided tour will incorporate holiday customs that originated during the 1800s.

Curious about the paranormal? Wonder if ghosts really walk among us? Come to Newport News, Virginia and experience The Paranormal
Tour. It’s history with a touch of mystery!
Day 1 (P.M.): The tour begins with a night walk through Newport News Park. A park ranger will take your group on an “Owl Prowl” in
search of those things that go bump in the night. Check-in to your Newport News hotel for a good night’s rest and prepare for tomorrow’s
adventure.
DAY 2 (A.M.): After a delicious breakfast, start the day with a ghost tour of Ferry Plantation. Located in Virginia Beach, Ferry Plantation
holds stories of a native indian tribe and
Grace Sherwood, Virginia’s only convicted
witch, who was tried by water and found
guilty of witchcraft. Venture back up the
Peninsula to hear stories and battle cries
of sailors past at the USS Monitor Center
at The Mariners’ Museum. Recovered
artifacts, original documents, paintings, personal accounts and interactive experiences will paint an exciting portrait of the USS Monitor
and the CSS Virginia, Civil War icons whose historic clash changed the way ships were built. Visitors will be able to walk on the deck
of a full-scale replica of the USS Monitor, try their hand at maneuvering a sailing frigate in battle, walk down a mock pier between a
wooden frigate and the ironclad CSS Virginia, step inside the “battle theater” and experience the action during the Battle of Hampton
Roads, and much more.
DAY 2 (P.M.): After lunch at any of our group-friendly restaurants, travel to Endview Plantation, where
you will see video and listen to actual electronic voice phenomenon (EVP) recordings from investigations
conducted by RTL Paranormal, a local paranormal investigation group. Completed in 1769 by William
Harwood, Endview has been restored to its 1862 appearance. In the 1850s, the home was purchased by
Dr. Humphrey Harwood Curtis, William Harwood’s great-grandson. Dr. Curtis had his medical practice at
Endview from 1856 to 1861. The home was used briefly as a Confederate hospital in the spring of 1862
and was then occupied by Union forces until 1864. Step back in time as you enter Lee Hall Mansion,
the only large mid-19th-century plantation house remaining on Virginia’s lower Peninsula. Lee Hall, an
Italianate mansion constructed c. 1859, was once home to one of Warwick County’s leading landowners,
Richard Decauter Lee, who achieved prominence using the scientific farming method. During the 1862
Peninsula Campaign, Lee Hall became the headquarters for Confederate generals Magruder and
Johnston. Return to your Newport News hotel for rest and relaxation. You’ll need it, for tonight, the paranormal adventure continues
with a candle-lit Civil War themed evening at The Boxwood Inn, a gracious 1896 Southern mansion and former home of Simon Curtis
(the “boss man” of Warwick County). Tonight, you’ll feast on a traditional plantation dinner, followed by an actual paranormal
investigation with team members from RTL Paranormal. They will teach your group all about the tools and methods used to capture
evidence of ghosts among us.
DAY 3 (A.M.): Enjoy another hearty breakfast before heading home with spooky memories of Newport News, Virginia.
NEWPORT NEWS: THE PARANORMAL TOUR
44 45
OF NEWPORT NEWSA GROOVY TIME WARP
Newport News is the perfect place for your group’s “outta sight,” nostalgic getaway!
DAY 1: When the 1960s began, so did the Vietnam War. Learn about this important time in our history as well
as other events that shaped our world at the Virginia War Museum. This expansive museum is an overview
of U.S. military history from 1775 to the present day. Displays of uniforms, weapons, accoutrements, and art
work focus on the men and women involved in American military actions dating back from the Revolutionary
War. And if that’s not enough, visit the U.S. Army Transportation Museum. The Museum occupies over
six acres just inside the entrance to Fort Eustis, a Training and Doctrine Command Installation, and has
impressive exhibits related to the Vietnam War as well as nearly 100 full-size vehicles and other military
craft. The new Bellino Gallery opened in 2004 and features large-scale artifacts, including a reproduction
Vietnam-era guard tower and a rare gun truck. Bowling was a great
activity for both adults and teens. Bring your group over to Classic
Lanes for lunch and a bit of healthy competition…watch out for the
gutter ball!
Pink Floyd was one of the first bands to play psychedelic music. Long
instrumental solos and weird electronic effects were a crazy part of the
band’s style. Hear their music and other classic bands accompanied
with incredible laser light shows at the Abbitt Planetarium at the
Virginia Living Museum! Experience the new state-of-the-art laser
system that splashes brilliant high-color LED laser light all across the
entire surface of the dome. It’s the most amazing light show you’ve
ever seen!
DAY 2: Are you into the hippie or mod look? In the 1960s, jewelry included love beads, flower power, flapper-length bead necklaces and multi-
strand necklaces in popular day-glow colors like orange, pink, yellow and lime. Create your own look at The Bead Store in the Historic
Hilton Village. Next, head over to City Center and shop for a nice outfit to go with your accessories! Before tonight’s festivities,
connect with your inner “flower child” and enjoy a relaxing stroll through Huntington Park’s Rose Garden. The Rose Garden
offers a beautifully landscaped area complete with a scenic gazebo and features over 45 different rose varieties. In 2002,
Newport News was named an American Rose City by the American Rose Society, the first city in Virginia to earn
that distinction.
This evening, your group will have the chance to show off their hip look at The Boxwood Inn! Enjoy
“dinnertainment” with groovy sixties style as they take you back to a decade that saw a flood of new bands, new
fashions and new songs that nudged aside the fifties. Out went doo-wop, in came folk music, Motown, beach music
and the counter-culture of long hair, tie-dye and sandals.
DAY 3: Be sure to have a good breakfast as you’ll need lots of energy today! This was a crucial decade for the nation’s
amusement parks and there is one that your group will love and it’s only minutes away…Busch Gardens Williamsburg! With
more than 50 thrilling rides and attractions, 10 main stage productions and world-class shopping, this will be a day well spent!
This tour “flight” is truly a feast for the eyes and palate and offers an
elaborate menu of history, nature, art, food and wine.
DAY 1: All aboard the Civil War Bus Tour! Meet Michael Moore,
Registrar for Lee Hall Mansion, one of the last remaining antebellum
homes on the Virginia Peninsula. Michael will guide your group along
the civil war trails of the Union and Confederate armies. Next stop is
The Mariners’ Museum, home to the premier Civil War attraction in
the country—the USS Monitor Center. In addition, over 60,000 square
feet of exhibition space allows you to escape to the Chesapeake Bay,
imagine steering a wooden sailing
ship, sit in an aircraft carrier ready room and marvel at the renowned Crabtree Collection of Miniature Ships.
Wine and dine at Rockefeller’s Restaurant, located in the Newport News Marriott at City Center. Feast on
succulent signature seafood dishes and enjoy the ambiance of this fine hotel restaurant.
DAY 2: Start the day with a walk in the park…Newport News Park! The largest municipal park east of the
Mississippi River, Newport News Park offers a wide variety of activities, including hiking, biking, mountain
biking, picnicking, paddle boating, canoeing, archery and freshwater fishing. Year-round camping is also
available at 188 campsites. Share a little Deer Talk with a Newport News Park Ranger and learn about
“where the wild things are.” At the Virginia Living Museum, explore Virginia’s natural heritage from the
mountains to the sea with living exhibits that look back at you. Experience a steamy cypress swamp and
a cool mountain cove. Explore the underwater world of the Chesapeake Bay and the underground realm
of a limestone cave. Enjoy hands-on activities and an observatory. Step outdoors and stroll the boardwalk
to view animals in naturalized habitats and see native plant gardens. Take a peek behind the curtain at
the Ferguson Center for the Arts at Christopher Newport University and get a behind-the-scenes tour of
the acoustically-superb theatres. Your group will also learn about Theatre CNU and their latest student
production. Just a short drive down the Cultural Corridor, you’ll find the Peninsula Fine Arts Center
where “Art is What You Make It!” Diverse artworks, dynamic exhibitions and original works by local
artists are part of this ever-changing art world. Did someone say margarita? Visit Newport News’s own
“Margaritaville”…Cheeseburger in Paradise. Enjoy a variety of delicious delicacies, including Jimmy’s
usual with “lettuce and tomato, Heinz 57 and French fried potatoes.” And don’t forget the big kosher dill
pickle on the side! Your group will have a fun-filled evening at this “island oasis”!
DAY 3: Today your group will indulge in the finer things in life! After a day of shopping at Port Warwick,
City Center or Historic Hilton Village, stop in and learn all about wine and cheese pairings at Wine for
Cheese. This quaint, unpretentious shop is much more than meets the eye as you’ll surely be educated and
entertained! Enhance your culinary skills with a Chef from Mitty’s Ristorante, located in the Omni Newport
News Hotel. Your group will enjoy a cooking demonstration that will have their mouths watering, followed
by a fabulous dinner.

The Virginia Living Museum’s 100-seat outdoor amphitheater and its entrance courtyard are the perfect
places for groups to perform. There is plenty of room, the acoustics are great (the animals won’t be
disturbed!) and there are places for your audience to sit and enjoy the show. At the conclusion of the
performance, the group can spend a few hours relaxing and learning about the wildlife of Virginia and
the Chesapeake Bay. View red wolves, the most endangered mammal in North America. Get up close
to a loggerhead sea turtle and moon jellies. See fish with no eyes and frogs that change colors. Explore
living replicas of a cypress swamp, Appalachian mountain cove and limestone cave. Touch live spider
crabs and fossilized dinosaur tracks. The Virginia Living Museum introduces visitors to more than 250
living species native to Virginia through exhibits, discovery centers and interactive hands-on exhibits. All
exhibits correlate with and reinforce national science standards. Behind-the-scenes tours, classroom and
assembly programs correlated to national standards, planetarium programs and after-hours bookings
also available. Advance notice is required for all group visits.

PENINSULA COMMUNITY [email protected] • 757.595.5728 • www.pctlive.org
In 1994, Peninsula Community Theatre (PCT) bought the Village Theatre, an art deco movie house
that was a landmark in historic Hilton Village (Author William Styron worked there as a lad!). Since then
PCT has refurbished nearly every square inch, including the neon letters (VILLAGE) that were lost to a
hurricane. Peninsula Community Theatre offers two musicals, comedies and dramas each year in their
five-production season (August - May). Their Children’s Theatre also features five productions. As a
community theatre, PCT donates seats to local organizations and sporadically features theatre
workshops; they award a yearly scholarship to an area high school senior and give free tours of the
theatre to groups (by appointment).
