The last few months have been a flurry of fantastic events for all to enjoy. There have been outdoor movies, NAIDOC week activities, SK8 series for youth, jet sprint boats, opera, horse racing, workshops with Yasuaki Onishi, a 0-5 year olds’ day, an ‘Express Yourself’ children’s event, plus several more. There has also been the awesome Lions’ Fortescue Festival with its associated ball, art and craft exhibition, parade, and 80s concert. There are still more to come in September and October. See our ‘Calendar of Events’ page further in this edition. With so much going on, we have included many photos of people and activities aiming to reflect this season.

No WamaNewman Police and the Department of Housing have an agreement that allows a household to voluntarily make their home a liquor restricted premise. Those houses displaying a ‘No Wama’ sign allows the Police to enter the premise at any time and remove and destroy any alcohol found. This aims to give the 19 houses currently signed up greater choice in what happens in their home.

Building Applications OnlineThe Shire of East Pilbara now allows lodging of building applications, tracking and search of existing town planning applications online as a component of their website. This has been coordinated

through the Pilbara Regional Council (PRC). This is especially supporting those who live far from the Shire’s administrative offices where the forms had to previously be submitted.

Community OpinionsFeedback has been consolidated from the Shire’s community survey. It has been reported that 9 out of 10 respondents say that the Shire’s facilities, services, activities and events meet their needs. Again, the majority of respondents (90%) selected medical and health services as being the most important issue for the Shire to be lobbying State and/or Federal Government. Youth services and retail opportunities were also flagged.

Congratulations Cr CraigieCongratulations to our Shire President of over a decade, Cr Lynne Craigie, for being elected as the President of the WA Local Government Association (WALGA) at the State Council’s special meeting. This comes in addition to her roles as Chairperson of the Pilbara Regional Council, Newman Women’s Shelter, Newman Visitors Centre, Newman Senior High School Board, and EPIS.

A Busy Police StationNewman Police are available 24 hours 7 days a week. However, the front counter is not necessarily attended even if doors are left open on weekdays as the Department of Transport operates out of the same building. If urgent attention is required call 000.

To help reduce pressure on local Police resources consider reporting:Minor offences and reports of lost property - www.police.wa.gov.auReport scams to the ACCC - www.scamwatch.gov.au or 1300 795 995Minor crash reports - www.crashreport.com.au Please note any crash resulting in injury must be reported direct to the Police in all instances.

Little People Big FuturesBy Georgie McInerney

Newman Early Years Network (NEYN) proudly supported by FMG and the Shire of East Pilbara coordinated a National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day for 0-5 year olds and their carers at Boomerang Oval on 4 August.

The event was a collaboration of local early years’ service providers and community members delivering a culturally appropriate celebration that would promote ‘Little People Big Futures’; the day’s national theme.

There were a range of activities including a Deadly Dance Workshop by local Torres Strait Islander performer Gina Reuben, stalls with craft and painting activities, kangaroo spearing, music, and basket weaving with Sha-ha sharing her skills that she learned from ladies in the Kimberley. There was also a reading corner by Best Beginnings and a photo booth in keeping with the theme.

About 150 people attended representing a wide range of the community including dads, mums, carers and of course an abundance of 0-5 year olds having a lot of fun!

FMG representative Mary Ann Kelly, the manager from FMG Cloudbreak mine, was also in attendance, coming to see how EPIC (Empowering People in Communities) and NEYN had delivered this event to the community through their generous support.

As mentioned in previous editions of Newman News, NEYN is a network of early years’ service providers and community members/parents who plan projects and events benefitting and servicing the needs of this age group in our community.

To remain informed on what is happening in Newman relating to 0-8 year olds and other useful information for the whole community, download the free NEYN Skoolbag app. which is supported by FMG.

NAIDOC WeekBy Nicole Willis

Newman's NAIDOC week celebrations were held between 5-12 July this year. So many great activities ran throughout the week including; Elders Morning Tea, Art in the Park, a special visit by Mark ‘Black’ Olive who held a cooking demo, and culminated in an awesome closing ceremony which included traditional bush tucker and the Oz Island Band from Broome.

Thanks to BHP Billiton Iron Ore for again supporting this great event and to the key stakeholders; EPIS, Y-Time, Shire of East Pilbara, Lifestyle Solutions, BOC, Coates Hire, Newman Primary School, P.A.M.S, Karlka, Serene Bedlam Studios, Newman Visitor Centre, and KJ Rangers, as well as the NAIDOC week committee.

This was unfortunately my last year coordinating the event and I would like to thank everyone who has supported me for the past three years at the helm. While I won’t be coordinating next year, I look forward to still being involved where possible and assisting whomever might take on the role!

The 2015 Art-at-the-Heart visiting artist, Yasuaki Onishi, held workshops in Newman, Marble Bar and Nullagine inviting people to explore the use of hot glue guns, one of his popular media. Attendees used iron ore rocks as the shape for modelling the glue around then removing the rock. Collectively, they created a light surround that projected interesting shadows on walls.

As mentioned in the previous edition of Newman News, this six week residency project is offered by the Shire of East Pilbara for the artist to engage with the community and to explore creative techniques. In addition to the workshops, open studio sessions were also held allowing everyone to see Yasuaki at work.

On Wednesday 2 September, Yasuaki’s exhibition at the Newman Club will mark the end of this year’s residency.

Variety BashBy Sonya Matheson

Since 1989, Variety WA has been running its Variety Bash with a convoy of vehicles travelling throughout the State, this year between Port Denison and Dampier over a week. Their objective is to raise money to help improve the lives of many children through provision of medical and mobility assistance devices.

Twenty-five vehicles and their teams raised over half a million dollars this year with ex-Newmanites, Kirsten Boardman and Tracey Payne, raising over $20,000 in their ‘Pilbara Princess’ bash car.

Each team covered their own expenses including characters in attendance such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Dr Suess, Top Gun characters, seven dwarves (or some of them), Minions, fairies, pirates, some other indescribable characters and, of course, our princesses.

The teams took some time out to visit Newman Primary School students and visitors to raise awareness and share their adventures and brightly decorated vehicles.

Kirsten Boardman posted on FaceBook “We had a ball at the school and handing out treats to all the school kids and teachers. Sorry we couldn’t stay longer.”

The Magic FluteBy Sonya Matheson

Newman was treated to Opera Australia’s version of ‘The Magic Flute’ on 20 August brought to us by the Shire of East Pilbara. This tale was thankful performed in English.

The South Newman Primary School’s choir, ranging from Year 3 to Year 5, performed as the ‘Spirits’ and did a wonderful job to much applause. Students had rehearsed weekly for two terms under the tutelage of Hannah Dodds.

The students had the opportunity to rehearse three times with the Opera Australia performers including a full costume rehearsal just two hours prior to the performance.

The professional singers and those in the chamber orchestra had been travelling throughout regional Australia covering long distances. One team member mentioned that the morning after this performance, they were due to fly to Perth and then drive straight to Geraldton to continue their tour.

South Newman Primary School’s Principal, David Thomas, said that “Opera Australia performers and staff were wonderful and really encouraged the students to enjoy the experience and the night. We also thank the Shire of East Pilbara for asking the school to participate in this performance.”

Myth: A little bit of chocolate won’t hurt.Chocolate can be very toxic to dogs and cats. The weight of your pet, as well as the amount and type of chocolate ingested will determine the extent of toxicity that can occur. The darker the chocolate the more toxic it is. Chocolate toxicity can results in vomiting and diarrhoea, heart arrhythmias, seizures and even death. If your dog has ingested chocolate, it is best to contact your veterinarian to work out the dosage consumed and determine if prompt treatment is required.

Myth: You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. This is one of the oldest myths in the book. Older dogs may have issues with loss of hearing or vision that may add to the challenge of training, but age is not a determining factor when it comes to training your pet. For best results with training (young or old) utilise positive reinforcement training and ensure that you are not inadvertently reinforcing negative or unwanted behaviours. Patience and practise are far more important factors when it comes to training.

Myth: Dogs see in black and white. This is an old myth and the simple truth is that dogs can see in colour, but not the way most humans do. Dogs have less cones than humans in the back of the eye. These cones are special light catching cells that respond to colour. They have a limited palette of colours that they can see (mostly blues, yellows, greens and greys) and the colours are also less vibrant. In fact, a colour vision scientist in America found that dogs’ perception of colour is similar to that of red-green colour-blind people.

Myth: Only wash your dog once a month. In the Pilbara, our four-legged friend becomes red and dirty really quickly. In addition more than 1 in 4 dogs will suffer from allergic skin disease. Bathing only once a month in many cases is simply not practical and in addition, for dogs suffering allergies, bathing may even be prescribed up to 2-3 times weekly. The key message here is use a gentle shampoo especially formulated for pets (ideally containing oatmeal if your dog suffers from allergies, we recommend the Epi-Soothe or Paw Range) and always follow up with a conditioner to help drying of the coat.

Pet Myths Debunked – Part 1By Dr Lucy van der Weide, BScBVMSVeterinarian, Newman Veterinary Hospital

Myth: My dog has eaten something toxic, quick pass it the salt.Although salt can be an affective anti-emetic it is certainly not the safest or most reliable option. Administering salt to your dog can result in life-threatening salt toxicosis. If your pet has ingested something toxic (e.g. bait, medications, grapes, chocolate, anti-freeze) you should contact your local veterinarian asap. If safe to do so, a veterinarian can quickly induce vomiting and start prompt treatment. There is only a short window to induce vomiting. Making some dogs vomit in certain situations can actually cause more harm. If your dog is showing symptoms of their toxin then vomiting is dangerous and other treatments will be necessary.

Wild Dog BaitingThe North West Telegraph printed an advertisement from the Pilbara Regional Biosecurity Group stating that “an aerial baiting program for wild dog control” is being implemented by pastoralists on their leases in September. The poisons stay around for months until strong rains have passed.

Wild dogs cause problems for livestock and the baits are extremely toxic while native animals are said to have a tolerance for it. However, this means that pet dogs are at extreme risk. It is best to leave them safely at home from September onwards.

These leases are private property but contain many beautiful spots that Newman residents and visitors use for leisure. These may include Wunna Munna, Weeli Wolli and Kalgan’s Pool to name just a few.

We are reminded that it is required to contact pastoralists before going on their property, which normally is just a phone call in advance. Contact details can be obtained from the Newman Visitor Centre. Be courteous when on other people’s property with contact, behaviour and anything you leave behind.

Please note the signage that many inform at specific spots of baiting is an indication but take precautions as surrounding areas including Crown Land may be affected.

Raising Hope MinistriesRaising Hope is a ministry run under the Newman Baptist Church banner. The ministry is a not-for-profit group who volunteer their time for the community and are financially supported by contributions made to the church by family and friends of the ministry. Raising Hope in Newman is currently running their winter appeal and is calling on any donations of shoes or clothing. Your donations are most welcome if you would please drop them off at the Baptist Church on Welsh Drive.

The Baptist Church itself is undergoing some changes with the arrival of a new purpose built building to house all the children and youth activities that the church undertakes including Mainly music, Sunday school and the youth programme.

The building arrived in mid July but due to rain at the time it was unable to be assembled until the weather subsided. The building has a large room that can be divided and another smaller room along with kitchen and toilet facilities. This is a great space that can be utilised by the community as a WHOLE with the church allowing private hire of the facility.

Pastor John and his wife, Rosemary Harris, are relatively new to town, only arriving in February for a short secondment. The Pastor identified the need for this new facility as the church is ever-growing and the current facilities were not enough to house everyone during church services. Therefore Pastor John met with Ausco to plan the concept of the new building.

The building is near completion and the church has proposed a Grand Opening on Sunday 30 August. Pastor John would like to welcome the entire community along and it will be at this event that the church launch the official renaming to ‘Newman Community Baptist Church’ along with the new logo, ‘A great place for a fresh start’, which we can all relate to at some point in our lives. There will also be a multi-cultural evening on Saturday 29 August, again open to the community.

Flashback to the 80sBy Sonya Matheson

For those of us old enough to remember, the 1980s music scene saw pop, dance and new wave music but it was rock and roll that still resounded.

To cap off the Lions Fortescue Festival weekend, the Shire of East Pilbara, along with generous support by BHP Billiton, presented the ‘Absolute 80s’ concert to an appreciative audience.

The performers were all the front person of their bands at the time.

CEO of the Shire of East Pilbara, Allen Cooper said “… the hits just kept coming one after the other.”

“We also used the main stage to showcase the local talent in our community. Some of our home grown talent has never had the opportunity to perform at such a large venue and this event gave each of them the opportunity to shine in their own right,” added Mr Cooper.

“It took more than 130 people in our community to make just a few hours of solid entertainment happen and I would like to express sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to the huge success of this event” Mr Cooper said.

It was amazing to see how little some of the performers have changed.

Housing for Health ServicesAttracting and retaining health service staff in Newman has been an ongoing concern for residents, other workers, and visitors alike. Thanks to the Shire of East Pilbara, with the support of BHP Billiton Iron Ore, great leaps have been made with the provision of three homes on Braeside Drive.

BHP provided over two million dollars towards the houses that are suitable for medical professionals and their families too. The houses have three bedrooms, two bathrooms, plenty of storage and come fully furnished.

Having listened to residents through surveys and other communications, the Shire noted that health services were highlighted for major focus. One barrier to attracting medical professionals until now has been housing.

“With the completion of these homes it is hoped we can formalise an agreement with health care providers and have the homes occupied at the earliest time,” said the Shire of East Pilbara’s CEO, Allen Cooper.

Arts and Crafts ExpoThe following description by Barb Sundgren is of her winning craft presented at the exhibition at the Fortescue Festival

“The farm began as a small vegetable patch and as time slipped by and more wool became available it just grew. I worked on it at the Sunday Craft sessions at the Newman Neighbourhood Centre for many months, probably over a period of two years...on and off. There was a lot of encouragement, mirth and crazy suggestions from the craft girls, as well as friends and family.

“When people asked me how I was spending my time in Newman, I was able to tell them I was knitting a farm. I'm not sure what they visualised and I seldom elaborated! I think it came as a bit of a shock when they saw the finished piece!

“When not working on the farm, I was knitting and crocheting poppies to create a Poppy Mural as a tribute to all fallen soldiers and, in particular, the Australian and New Zealand ANZAC servicemen; one of whom was my father. I would like to donate this mural to the local Barracks.”

The Newman Neighbourhood Centre would like to thank Jodie Wood, Barb Sungdren, Nancy Lumsden, Susan Clarke, Paulene Whakaruru, Jenyce Lynn and Michelle Baines for all their help with setting up, manning and disassembling the Arts and Crafts Expo.

Lions Fortescue Festival WeekendBy Emma Whakaruru and Jessica Middleton

The Lions Fortescue Festival weekend held in August proved to be a major highlight of Newman’s social calendar once again. The festival celebrations kicked off with the Fortescue Festival Ball on the Friday evening finishing with the Fortescue Festival on the Sunday. The float parade opened the day-long festival ending with an amazing display of fireworks and the Absolutely 80s concert.

Thanks go to the Shire of East Pilbara, BHP Billiton Iron Ore, BOC Gases, Boulevard Pharmacy, Celebrations Newman, Coates Hire, Freo Cranes, GCS, Heli West, Newman Fuel Services, Newman Mainstreet Project, Newman Retravision, Pilbara Access, PT Environmental Services, Serene Bedlam Studios, Steven Smoor, Transpacific, RGR and SPG, community groups and all volunteers for their support over the Fortescue Festival weekend.

Newman Lions Club President, Anthony Middleton said “It was great this year to see extra events like the Absolutely 80s concert and performances by our own talented locals. It was great to see back at the festival the ‘Show and Shine’ and the ‘Arts and Craft Expo’. The weekend would not have been possible without the ongoing commitment of volunteers.”

The GP Housing Project in Newman is a housing development in partnership with the Shire of East Pilbara. BHP Billiton is proud to have invested A$2.2 million into this project for the community.

The local community have highlighted that health care services are a high priority to the residents of Newman. Three new homes are now complete to accommodate general practitioners, aiming to attract and retain residential medical professionals to service Newman and the surrounding population.

BHP Billiton Iron Ore Manager of Pilbara Communities Chris Cottier said one of the primary issues within a regional community is attracting medical professionals and retaining them long-term.

“We are pleased to have been able to work with our partners in providing high quality housing to accommodate general practitioners and we are committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of the Newman community,” Mr Cottier said.

Health and wellbeing is a key focus area for BHP Billiton’s community investment and this initiative is a great outcome for the Newman community.
