editor's etchings

Editor’s welcomeI’m hoping that August and September turn into an Indian summer, because so far I seem to have spent most of the past month in wellies rather than wearing any of the skyscraper sandals I needed to buy. Some of my summer clothes will be treasured vintage pieces before they ever make it out of the wardrobe.

Even if the weather does turn out a bit of a disappointment, there are still plenty of things for you to enjoy in this issue of Trend. Raise the temperature with our boudoir fashion shoot, try your hand at a cookery class or head to the city’s first Art Fair. Win some spectacular prizes in our competitions, or check out the best products for a barely there approach to clothing and cosmetics.

We haven’t forgotten the gentlemen either, with a fashion spread on clothes for real men, some ideas for where to go for a meal and both Ferraris and steam trains making it into this issue.

As for me, I’m taking a fashion forward approach, wondering how autumn’s sixties and forties catwalk looks will translate to my own dog walking look and I’m seriously coveting both Lisa Taylor’s cosy cashmere range and one of Lindsay Johnston’s brilliant silk scarves.

Have a great time,Alison

If you’re already planning your Autumn/Winter wardrobe, then you won’t want to miss out on Cameron Taylor’s latest range of superbly cosy cashmere cardigans, dresses, coats, knitwear and accessories. They’re available in sizes 8-14/16 and with accessories from £70, fine knits from £185 and outerwear from £400, this is investment dressing that will still look and feel great a decade from now.

The luxe label is owned by local girl Lisa Taylor and stocked in Kafka on Rosemount Viaduct, with the whole collection being available online. Lisa’s eye for quality and great design is exceptional and the range’s key pieces will form the foundation of your wardrobe for seasons to come. We’re just a little bit in love

with her trumpet sleeved bow cardigan and her heavyweight hooded parkas. They’re ideal for the North East’s chillier seasons and Lisa has skilfully put together a collection that has something to flatter every shape.

Lisa trained at The Royal College of Art, before spending time at knitwear gurus Missoni, freelancing at Nicole Farhi and moving to the refined luxury of Italian design house Mila Schön before launching her own label, Cameron Taylor.

As you might expect from a designer with such a heritage, Lisa insists on working with the best cashmere yarns and manufactures solely in Scotland, to ensure her modern design aesthetic is matched in terms of quality.

This season, Lisa’s designs feature unusual sleeve shapes, natural horn and mother of pearl details and a palette which offers muted autumnal and natural tones, augmented with neutrals, black and shots of colour from violets and winter whites. It’s not often something so stylish is also so cosy and comfortable.

They’ll take you from the school run to weekends in the country, from work to wherever you’re going in consummate style and comfort.

Oldmeldrum’s Fashionista boutique comesas a wonderful surprise. So many places offer the same brands that it’s difficult to find something different.

Fashionista, co-owned by Elaine Penny and Anne Brand, is one of the few retail stockistsof the Danish GreenHouse clothing range, which is normally sold exclusively through private consultants.

The design-led range offers both casual and dressier pieces that combine well to form a great capsule wardrobe that can be added to over the seasons. Fashionista stocks ageless and timeless clothes in sizes 8-24. We loved the informal basics, cute tops and their well-cut jeans that somehow make you look taller and slimmer. We were also pleasantly surprised by the prices, which are surprisingly good value.

The GreenHouse range is augmented by well chosen day dresses, scarves, jewellery and

other accessories that the Fashionistas have sourced personally. It’s rather like walking into your ideal wardrobe.

Elaine and Anne offer a relaxed, no-pressure approach to clothes’ shopping. There’s a large, well appointed private area at the back of the shop for trying on different looks. The girls are happy to offer expert advice on dressing to suit your shape.

“Our customers tell us that shopping here has made such a difference. Instead of opening their wardrobes and discovering that although they have plenty of clothes, but absolutely nothing to wear, they now have the perfect outfit for every day,” explained Elaine.

Anne added, “We focus on offering a complete service. We take the time to help our customers find the perfect outfit. It’s great that people trust us to suggest a colour or style that they might not have considered before, and we love

seeing women walk out feeling that littlebit more confident and stylish!”

Restaurant REVIEWS

Borsalino have been serving authentic Italian cuisine since 1976 and they are still going strong today. Situated on the outskirts of Peterculter the quaint white building is perched high overlooking the beautiful Culter Burn.

As soon as you step inside you get an instant Italian feel with the traditional decor and beautiful murals on the wall painted by local artist David Newbatt. We were greeted at the bar and shown to the restaurant where our waiter sat us down and recited the daily specials in his Italian accent. As well as their daily specials the menu offers a good selection of Italian classics along with some of their own signature dishes. We ordered a bottle of Frascati while we browsed the menu, a

refreshing, light and dry white wine perfect for a summers evening.

To start I chose the soup of the day which was a smooth and creamy broccoli soup topped with goats cheese and served with freshly baked bread. My sister ordered the Fritturali Calamari, a generous portion of light and crispy calamari rings served with a sweet chili dip.

For our main course I went for the pork meatballs on the specials menu, these were served on a bed of spaghetti and topped with a fresh tomato sauce. My sister decided to go with a classic and ordered the Lasagneal Forno.

Half way through our main course the restaurant went noticeably quiet and in true Italian style our waiter began serenading each table with traditional Italian songs which really set the atmosphere in the restaurant.

Neither of us could manage dessert but couldn’t resist sharing a portion of the delightful homemade rich and creamy tiramisu. If it’s a true Italian experience you are looking for then check out Borsalino. Bellissimo!

restaurant reviews

A long standing Aberdeen institution is the Shahbaaz Tandoori on Rose Street.

Now far more modern in decor, having been revamped in the last few years, the Shahbaaz remains for many, the best and only Indian restaurant in Aberdeen to visit.

The established staff welcome you each time with a nod and smile. The food is consistently good, the ingredients are fresh, and the food is cooked to order so sometimes a wait is inevitable but for those of us who appreciate that this it is not a problem. After being shown to your seat they present you with the comprehensive menus and ask if you would like popadums. These come served with spicy onions, mango chutney and yoghurt dips,

it can be nice to add to these by adding a portion of cucumber raita or mango pickle. The popadums and beer, traditional with Curry, are great to nibble as you peruse the menu.

There is a wide-ranging selection of appetisers, many of which often can be quite filling, but if you’re ambitious and keen to try the whole experience opt for the Samosas, either vegetable or mince, the Shami Kebab or the Chicken Pakora all equally delicious.

Main courses are plentiful and the menu boasts a large vegetarian selection. The Shahbaaz has many in-house specialities; a few of my favourites are their Chicken Jalfrezi, the Shahbaaz special Karahi dishes, the name is derived from the dish in which it is prepared,

the Quandari dishes and Masaledar ones all are equally tasty.

To accompany these dishes I would always choose the traditional Pulao rice, a Peshwari Nan or Tandoori Chapatti and add a portion of Bombay Potatoes and Turka Dall.

I have never managed to have a desert here but I keep returning so that one day perhaps I will.

In this Dusk creation we have used fresh mint rather than an artificial mint flavoured liqueur which gives this drink a crisp mint aftertaste.

Why did you decide to become a chef? Were you interested in cooking when you were a child? My grandma was a cook when I was little and I would often spend Sundays baking with her for my Grandad and the rest of the family. She inspired me to go on to do more in the kitchen.

Tell us how you came to be in your current job? It was always my goal to have my own restaurant. I’m originally from Aberdeen and wanted to open in my home town with the support of my family and friends.

How would you describe the food you offer at Paula McEwen? At Paula McEwen I like to keep things simple while often adding an unusual twist. Our motto is ‘simple food served well’.

What Ingredients do you feel are underrated? Salt has a bad name these days, however I feel that it is an important part of the cooking process as it enhances the flavour of the dish. Too often, salt is neglected and the food ends up tasting bland and underseasoned.

What’s your own favourite food? And where did you have your most memorable meal? My favourite food is a Roast dinner with all the trimmings. My most memorable meal Le Gavroche as it was my first Michelin experience and I was amazed by the professionalism of the waiting staff and the amazing food.

What do you love about cooking and your job? I love learning new techniques and creating new menus. I also really enjoy training younger chefs and seeing them progress.

Melt the chocolate in a bowl over a pan of hot water. Place the butter and sugar into the bowl of a food mixer and beat until pale and fluffy. Add the honey, cocoa powder and egg yolks and continue to beat for approximately 5 minutes. Whisk the cream in a separate bowl until it forms soft peaks. Remove the chocolate from the heat and whisk in the whipped cream. Quickly fold the chocolate cream into the butter mix until it is evenly mixed but still light and fluffy. Pour the mixture into a terrine mould or cake tin and place in the fridge for about 4 hours until set firm. Use a warmed knife to cut into portions before serving.

For the Honeycomb:75g runny honey140g liquid glucose5 tablespoons water 2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda400g caster sugarPut all ingredients bar the bicarbonate of soda in a pan

Heat gently until the mixture starts to caramelise. When the mixture turns a golden brown, stir in the bicarbonate of soda. The mixture will puff up, this is ok. Take off the heat and pour into a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper. Allow to cool. Crack the honeycomb when it is fully set.

They say it’s the little things in life that make all the difference and aesthetic professional Louise Mackintosh would definitely agree.

Especially if the change is so subtle you just can’t put your finger on it.

For that’s exactly what she achieves using a range of injectable fillers and facial line-softening treatments – a transformation so discreet it’s understated yet beautifying and can remain your secret.

A trained beauty therapist and former theatre nurse with more than 20 years’ experience, based at The Aesthetic Room, she believes less is more, particularly for clients trying injectable treatments for the first time.

“There are little techniques you can use to make your face look fresher and I always spend a lot of time ensuring people are comfortable with treatments. I also discourage them from having too much – the most important thing is to get the balance right and have ahappy client.”

The team at independent financial management company Russell Gibson may be more familiar with SIPPS than spades or growing financial portfolios than flowers, but that didn’t stop them lending a hand to local social care charity VSA recently.

The financial gurus turned gardeners for the day to help rebuild a turf-roofed trellis pavilion and decking area that was the centrepiece of the ‘People grow better in gardens’ charity show garden at this year’s Gardening Scotland event. In addition, they also constructed two raised plant beds to allow residents to sit and garden at an accessible height and at their own pace.

Russell Gibson director Tom Hyslop explained, “This is the second time that Russell Gibson has completed this type of project for VSA. Last year we helped to renovate the garden of one of VSA’s other care homes”. Staff from Low Services and the HGL Group also pitched in to complete the work. Tom continued, “VSA does fantastic work providing a range of services to support people of all ages and we are pleased to be able to support them by donating some of our time to complete these projects.”

The team at Platinum Hair, the West End Salon without West End prices, are still bubbling over with excitement following their triumph in the Readers’ Award Category at this year’s Trend Life with Style Awards. Salon owner Jamie Tait missed the awards because she was on her honeymoon, but her team texted the news straight away, as Jamie explained, “It was a wonderful wedding gift to receive while I was on honeymoon! Being chosen for the Trend Readers Award is such an honour to myself and my team, especially as this is the first ever Readers Award. The whole team is tremendously proud of this and I think it proves that you do

not have to be a large business to have a loyal clientele who will take time out to show their support. Our customers are fantastic and we really appreciate all their votes. Winning has meant so much to us all.”

“Lots of our clients take home the Trend magazine from our salon. I think our clients felt it was the perfect opportunity to reward us for our hard work, value, customer care, loyalty and professionalism. We know a good salon needs to offer more than just a nice hair do and I think our clients appreciate the extra mile we go to provide an enjoyable experience.”

“We would like to say a huge THANK YOU SO MUCH to our clients who took the time to vote for us, we are so grateful for their support and custom since we opened in 2006. We will continue to provide a high standard of hairdressing and we have some exciting plans for the future. New clients are always welcome in our salon and we hope our first award won’t be our last one!”

Sometimes you just want to have a good time, grab a few drinks after work, have a laugh, hit the dance floor and forget about dressing up.

The trio behind uber-chic cocktail bar Amicus Apple have brought the American Dive Bar to Aberdeen and it’s a concept that travels well. Owners Chris Cusiter, Jason White - both Scottish Rugby Internationals - and Calum McKinnon know just about everything about having a good time!

Bad Apple is refreshingly unpretentious, starting the evening as a great place for after work drinks and transforming to a hedonistic club with live DJs. It’s the kind of place where everyone will feel at home, so it’s ideal for office nights out, hen or stag parties or just having a really, really, good night out.

The vibe is relaxed: you can feel free to dance on the seats if the classic rock soundtrack moves you, or collapse in a heap on one of Bad Apple’s giant lounging sofas. Groups in need of their own space can book for one of the bar’s private cabins and take advantage of the table service. You can hang out by the jukebox, impress the finance department with your pinball wizardry or show off your skills as a pool shark. Alternatively, you can cement your reputation as the office superstar by hiring out the karaoke room for a couple of hours.

There’s a great selection of draught and bottled beers, spirits and, as you’d expect from the boys behind Amicus Apple, a menu of cocktails and sharing pitchers.

Even the food is laid back with a menu offering eight types of hotdogs and crunchy nachos and as the evening hots up, you can head upstairs to the dance floor and really let your hair down.

For the men who read Trend I thought you might appreciate what a woman thinks of a real boy’s toy. I was recently challenged with what to get as a present for my partner’s ‘special’ birthday…the Ferrari 430 Spider has always been his dream car and as much as I’d have loved to be able to buy one for him unfortunately I could only stretch to hiring it for a weekend.

The car was really eye-catching; all shiny and polished and as a girl the first thing I noticed was, it was the correct colour… the only colour I think a Ferrari should be, red and teamed with beige leather interior finished it off perfectly.

I thought it was quite basic inside and

still has the gated metal gear shift and nowhere really to put my handbag, but I was told that this is because it’s a sports car and really for men! The noise when it started was loud and deafening, but very sexy. We got underway and I really felt we were going incredibly fast but that’s because of the seating position, it is so close to the ground you really felt that you were going far faster than you actually were. We zipped along the country roads taking each corner smoothly but when therewere bumps in the road we really did feel them, the suspension being extremely hard.

For you petrol heads, the 430 is Ferrari’s 21st road going convertible with a 4.3-L

490 horsepower, V8 engine. Its output specifications are; 490 PS (360 kW; 483 hp) at 8500 rpm and 465 N·m (343 lb·ft) of torque at 5250 rpm, 80% of which is available below 3500rpm. The car’s acceleration time is 4.1 seconds from 0 to 62 mph and has a top speed of more than 193 mph. The car’s convertible canvas roof is automatically powered by seven electro hydraulic motors and takes 20 seconds tofold away.

All in all I give this experience thumbs up and boy does it turn heads, so girls if you’re looking for brownie points go to www.northernferrairhire.com and tell them we sent you.

When a child is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, their life becomes infinitely more complicated and the carefree spontaneity we associate with childhood becomes a thing of the past. They are reliant on several insulin injections each day to stabilise their blood glucose levels.

Living with type 1 diabetes is aconstant balancing act. You need to measure your blood glucose regularly and constantly monitor food intake, just to stay alive. Such simple pleasures as cinema trips, tucking into dessert, holidays or sleepovers need careful planning.

Abnormal levels of blood glucose

can result in difficult mood swings or hypoglycaemia. Type 1 diabetes can cause devastating complications including blindness, heart disease, amputation, strokes and kidney failure and reduces life expectancy by about 20 years.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation exists to find a cure for this chronic condition, which affects over 27,000 people in Scotland. The Scottish Development Group is determined to raise £100,000 and is looking to Trend’s readers to help them reach their goal.

As part of the campaign, Kintore’s Neil McDonald and climbing partner Radek Dusatko will be attempting to conquer

Mont Blanc, Aconcagua and Mount Everest throughout 2011 and 2012. All the money raised through sponsorship goes directly to JDRF.

This year’s annual JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes takes place on Sunday 4th September at Hazlehead Park, Aberdeen. Neil and Radek will be on hand to promote Climbing for a Cure.

Escape Director Robin Parkinson is involved in a year long charity effort to raise funds for essential Neurosurgery equipment. Mr Parkinson and his wife Lynne are competing in Iron Mans, Marathons and Triathlons as well as a 250mile cycle in one day from Aberdeen to Inverness and back to Aberdeen.

Mr Parkinson said: “Lynne and I have been training very hard to complete a number of events to help raise the money for this worthy cause. A big thank you goes all our clients and friends who donated so far and also to Jock at Simbiosis on Great Western Place for preparing the rolls.”

Orders were made by local businesses including PetersonSBS, SeaHold GeoShips, thinkPR, flexlife, Specialist Subsea Services and Rushmore Reviews.

The Endoscopic equipment allows tumours to be removed without the need for massive incisions across the head (leaving no scarring). Recovery time can be reduced from 14 days in a hospital bed to 2 days. At £1000 per day for a hospital bed this equipment will indirectly affect many more people.

Priceless...There’s no doubt you get out of lifewhat you put into it – and if you can doit with a bit of style, so much the better.

That’s why Trend is donating profits from our Life With Style Awards to help Cornerstone’s Volunteering Service.

Every day there are countless opportunities to help change the lives of children, young people and adults with disabilities who are supported by the charity across the North-east.

From leading walking groups round Aberdeen, to befriending by sharing a football

match with a youngster, a love of Elvis with a fan or the Doric with a man with a passion for farming, to assisting a retail or training initiative. The possibilities are endless.

But demand for volunteers is constant and funds are always needed to support their work and encourage others to join up. People from all walks of life are valued volunteers: students looking for experience; retirees with a lifetime’s knowledge; mums with transferable skills

considering a return to work.

They get as much as they give and they’ve all got one thing in common – their contribution is priceless.

We caught up with Lindsay Johnston, one Scotland’s most promising young designers, at the launch of her latest silk scarf range.

“I’ve been drawing ever since I was young. My favourite childhood illustrator was Beatrix Potter; her beautiful artwork inspired me to draw the family pets. I remember receiving Christmas presents from my parents, which included a range of Beatrix Potter goodies and Liberty of London Print gifts. I think this probably started my interest in design,” Lindsay explained.

Local girl Lindsay graduated from Gray’s School of Art in 2008 where she studied Graphic Design. “I realised that I could combine the skills that I had gained from my course with my love for illustration. I wanted to create a luxurious item, which would feature my artwork. I figured silk scarves would be a great way to launch my designs as a scarf can be used in so many ways, as a fashion accessory worn around the neck, as a head band, tied to a handbag or framed as a piece of art,”she enthused.

“I start with a pencil and ink drawing that is then scanned into digital form. I can then change the colour, scale and layout of the design. My silk scarves are then digitally printed at Glasgow School of Art, and I hand finish the edges.

“Inspirations for me are my favourite artist William Morris, tattoo designs and my pet

Akita called Yoshi. Anything from the patterns on his fur to the shape of his tail can be found in some of my designs. Hermes, Dior and Liberty of London’s colours and patterns fascinate me, especially the intricately detailed repeat patterns.

“My designs and greeting card range are exclusively available at Claremont Studio. My silk scarves are available as a scarf or framed as a wall hanging. Silk scarves start at £75 and a wall hanging starts at £150. I offer a bespoke service and accept commissions, so prices vary depending on size and material, but it means I can offer something unique. “My designs have been launched under my own brand, ‘Lindsay & Yoshi’. I plan to launch my own website and online shop in the future, and will be expanding my range into home wares and fashion accessories. Ultimately my ambition is to create a collection of iconic pattern and design.”

If you’ve eaten at Banchory’s Cow Shed Restaurant, you’ll know that the only regret you’ll have is that you can’t take the kitchen team home so you can enjoy their culinary skills every night. Luckily for us, head chef Graham Buchan has branched out and is now offering classes at the Cow Shed Cook School, so you can learn to whip up everything from succulent meat courses, fabulously fresh fish and lusciously tender lamb to snazzy canapés and chocolate confections.

We opted to have a go at bread making with expert chef Nick in the restaurant’s superbly equipped professional kitchen. Class sizes are small so you get lots of attention and you’ll pick up new skills in just a few hours. The patient and proficient Nick demonstrated a

method that involved exuberantly slapping the dough against the bench and folding it over. It’s such an exuberant method that he’s had to retrieve dough from the ceiling before! After some finishing, proving and resting, the aroma of the bread baking was enticing and the final results utterly delicious.

Graham is even planning to run a pre-Christmas course where you can prepare your Christmas dinner in advance, using free-range turkeys from a nearby farm and sorting out everything from starters to the pudding before freezing them. Perfect if you’re hosting the festive feast for the first time or find it stressful.Courses last for either half a day or a full day, with the schedules published on the website and gift vouchers available.

If you’d like to learn something new, then why not enter our competition to win a half-day Cow Shed cookery course for two. Just go to our website at www.trendmagazine.co.uk click on the competitions tab and answer this question.

travel

Popping down to Glasgow for a couple of days might not seem the most glamorous of weekend destinations, but it is the Shopping Capital of Scotland as well as offering an unstuffy approach to culture, some of the country’s best restaurants and an uninhibited approach to having a good time. What’s not to love?

Head to the upmarket shopping arcade at Princes Square where you’ll find Cos, Vivienne Westwood, Reiss, and covetable leathers at Belstaff. A visit to niche beauty product specialist Space NK – home of just about every hard to find skincare brand and pampering product- is essential and you can round your shopping out with and a visit to one of the full complement of restaurants, cafes andcocktail spots.

Close by, the Buchanan Galleries offers over ninety shops to choose from, with some that aren’t currently available in Aberdeen, including Thomas Sabo, Mango and Moda in Pelle.

Just off George Square, the Italian Centre houses an exclusive array of design-led shops including Emporio Armani and perennial permatanned Glaswegian favourite, Versace, flanked by continental pavement cafes.

Cool your heels amidst the Art Nouveau splendours of the Willow Tearooms on Buchanan Street, or take a more modern approach at Chai Ovna, which offers a bewildering range of teas on Otago Lane, an area where you can also find some intriguing boutiques, specialty shops and secondhand bookshops.

Trend can never pass up the chance to poke around the antiques and vintage pieces at De Courcey’s Arcade, just off Byres Road, but this whole area repays a visit with great restaurants like Stravaigin and the Ubiquitous Chip, or laid back lunch spots like Booly

Mardy’s as well as oodles of independent boutiques offering a cache of designer goodies. If it’s the last Saturday of the month, even Hillhead library turns into a crafts market, where makers attracted from all over Scotland offer design-led textiles, jewellery and interiors products. Have a break from shopping at the Botanic Gardens at the top of Byres Road and watch the world go by.

Cultural types can while away a few hours at the lighthearted Glasgow Museum of Modern Art on Royal Exchange Square, or head further afield to the magnificently restored Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum which houses everything from Dali to dinosaurs. Alternatively, head to the south side where the Burrell Collection is a treasure house of pieces from across the world and Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s House for an Art Lover has been created in Bellahouston Park.

When it comes to dinner, you’re spoilt for choice with something to suit all tastes and appetites. Two Sisters at the Buttery is ideal for a romantic dinner a deux, while the Black Sheep Bistro is outstanding for Scottish fare. The city also abounds in spicier options with Mother India and the unlikely-sounding Sibbo’s Delhi Dhabba being considered amongst the city’s finest curry houses.

If you’re heading out after dinner, King Tut’s has been described as one of the finest small venues in the world, while Rab Ha’s and the Garage attract the younger crowd, while Aussie bar Walkabout, Bamboo orthe Ivy all have a less frenetic pace and convivial atmosphere.

Of course, you could just review your purchases over a nightcap at your hotel.

family corner

It doesn’t take more than a cursory glance

through the viewing window at Transition

Extreme’s skatepark to know that some family

activities are best left to the children. Not to

say that certain parents aren’t skilled enough

to enter the multi-directional, high-speed mix

of skateboards, inline skates and BMX bikes –

just to say that this parent isn’t skilled enough.

Having decided to sit this one out, I took a

position in the viewing gallery where every

grind, kick-flip and flatspin can be enjoyed in

the company of a lovely cappuccino from the

facility’s own Energy Café.

Whether your child has been skating for years

or is just sitting on a BMX for the first time,

Transition Extreme is the place to go. Opened

in 2007, the skatepark offers everything from a

beginner’s area, where the younger daredevils

can test their wheels on microramps, to

advanced sections that include huge drops,

grind rails and even an oververt cradle. If it

all sounds a bit intimidating, then best to

ease your way in by taking a private or group

lesson with one of the centre’s experts.

As you spend time in Transition Extreme, what

initially appears to be a chaotic motorway of

wheeled human traffic soon becomes a rather

organised room full of young people who are

gaining as much from the unspoken courtesy

required of the sport as they are from the

vigorous physical activity that disguises itself

as fun. Surely that is exactly what this social

enterprise set out to achieve.

Transition Extreme offers daily skatepark

sessions designated by ability as well as

lessons, birthday parties, and even private

sessions for those needing to find their inner

Tony Hawk in seclusion. With all the sedentary

activities vying for our children’s attention

these days, Transition Extreme is just what

Aberdeen needs.

Dear Trend

On a recent visit to Aberdeen (house-sitting for my sister) we picked up a copy of Trend magazine of which she had a few on her coffee table. Really useful magazine as we ended up in Banchory via Crathes Castle where my 3 kids had a fantastic time at Go Ape.

Great recommendations, especially the restaurant reviews. Loved the magazine. Thanks for making my week so much easier.

Dear Trend

Your music writer, David Nicolson, is to be praised for his constant efforts to highlight up and coming musicians all round this part of Scotland. It’s great that a musician of David’s experience writes for you. He’s really got a handle on the Aberdeen scene.

I’d like to see more reviews and information about bands appearing in local venues in the magazine, but it’s difficult when you have two months between issues. Is there any chance you could add this on the website?

Best regards,Max ReidTorry

Full Steam Ahead

The train was scheduled to leave at 10.20.At 10.17 I was rushing up the station steps, at 10.18 I was in the Ticket Hall, and by 10.19 I was running along the platform as a man in full uniform opened a door so I could jumpon board.

All of this happened to the sound ofwhistles blowing and steam hissing, because I wasn’t late for any ordinary train. I was late for the steam train that runs between the preserved Victorian station at Brechin, and Bridge of Dun station in the heart of the Angus countryside.

After a gently chugging twenty minutes, many people (with picnics in tow) got off at Bridge of Dun to enjoy a walk and return on a later train, but - eager to explore the historic station and soak up the atmosphere on the train - I did the eight mile round trip back to Brechin.

The station is cared for and maintained by dedicated volunteers, and when you pull back into Brechin you get a chance to really appreciate their work - they maintain the station, and every detail that makes it so classic, and share their enthusiasm for the railway by making it accessible to the public in really unique ways.

Apart from train rides on normal operational days, there are driver experience days, and private charter options on offer.

For something really different, there are the ‘Murder on the Brechin Express’ events, where whiskey and sherry on board aid the deductive process, and ‘Steam and Stovies’ nights, where you can enjoy an evening ride to Bridge of Dun station, spread your picnic rug on the platform to enjoy stovies, drinks, and live music, and then take a leisurely ride back to Brechin.

I really can’t think of a more enjoyable way to experience steam.

There was much hilarity at Trend Towers when the images from the catwalk shows at men’s fashion week came in. There are designers out there who believe that the man about town will be pairing green gingham trousers with giant tulle pompoms that cover the head and upper body, while others seemed to be trying to revive armour and disturbingly tight leather shorts. We suspect they’ve seen 300 once too often. If looking like an ancient Spartan or iceberg lettuce doesn’t float your boat, then take our fashion advice.

We much prefer men to look like real men. It really is that simple.

music

79

Around 5 years ago, Stonehaven’s Copy Haho caused a stir when they crashed onto the local music scene with a kind of assured, exhilarating indie rock that had audiences gasping from day one. In 2008 they proved they were no slouches in the studio with the ‘Bred For Skills and Magic’ EP and pretty soon critics and bloggers nationwide were tipping them as the Next Big Thing™ while debating how to pronounce their name (it’s ‘hey-ho’ for the record).

And then…they disappeared.

Ok actually, they went on tour. Endlessly. For the last few years Copy Haho have kept the kind of constant touring schedule that would make many bands weep, sharing bills all over Europe with bands like Los Campesinos!, Hot Club de Paris, Sebadoh and Two Door Cinema

Club (while seeming to have a knack of bumping into A-list Hollywood directors along the way - both Quentin Tarantino and Spike Jonze have been spotted at Copy Haho shows).

“So what do they sound like?!” I hear you cry. Well, you can find out for yourself as Copy Haho have just released a self-titled debut album. And it’s great.

Recorded at Chem19 studios in Glasgow and mixed by Simon Ward (of Scottish indie/electronica heroes Errors), ‘Copy Haho’ is a balancing act that may remind some, happily, of Pavement or early Idlewild. On one hand, the spiky guitar riffing, clever lyrics and catchy melodies keep the vitality and excitement of the band’s live show, yet without sounding ragged. On the other, they’ve added richness to their sound with wurlitzer electric piano,

violin and vibraphone, but never as far as to smooth out the edges of this indie rock delight.

No wonder Lauren Laverne is a fan, tweeting her praise earlier this year and featuring their album lead track, ‘Factory Floor’ on her 6Music playlist in May.

‘Copy Haho’ is available on cd or mp3 from iTunes, HMV, 1Up, Spotify, Amazon.

Copy Haho will once again be hitting the road in Autumn – go to www.copyhaho.co.uk (or follow @copyhaho on Twitter) for details of upcoming shows to be announced soon.

Her granny was a Sanderson from the Perthshire village of Killiecrankie, scene of a famous battle in 1689, and her mum was educated in Edinburgh so TV presenter, Angela Rippon, took a flying visit to Scotland from London in her stride.

She was speaking at a lunch at Aberdeen’s Gordon Highlanders Museum, hosted by the Kleinwort Benson private bank whose chief investment officer, Jeremy Beckwith, gave guests a rundown on current financial trends.

Angela, who began her TV career at BBC Plymouth in 1966, was also giving her much-valued continued support to a charity, the Muir Maxwell Trust, which helps families throughout the UK coping with children suffering from severe epilepsy.

Its founder, Ann Maxwell, from Musselburgh, spoke with passion at the lunch about her middle son, Muir, now 14, who had his first seizure at four months and whose severe epileptic condition inspired her and her husband, Jonny, to launch the charity in 2003.

“Angela’s support has been terrific and has enabled us to raise £5million, including a staggering £1million at a masked opera ball in the Dorchester Hotel in 2007 in London", she said "Angela is a real trouper. She had laryngitis for four days before she was due in Aberdeen and had just about got her voice back when she got here; she had to have a drink of hot water before she spoke.”

For her part, Angela talked of her early journalistic training on the Western Morning News in Plymouth, and how her multi-faceted career had been guided by the principles of honesty, accuracy and integrity.

Yet she never escapes being asked how a serious newsreader ended up causing a sensation by showing off a trim leg dancing on the Morecambe and Wise Christmas Show 35 years ago. “It was an honour and a privilege,” said Angela. “I couldn’t sing but the dancing came easily. I had ballet lessons for years.”
