ITS BEEN A BIG WEEK for Northern healthcare. Mike Brown, MPP, Algoma-Manitoulin, announced Monday that there will be two new Family Health Teams established, to serve the Batchewana and Blind River communities. Ontario is creating 30 new Family Health Teams across the province to provide better access to family health care. “I am pleased that Algoma-Manitoulin has received two more Family Health Teams, in addition to those previously approved in Wawa, Elliot Lake, Chapleau, Manitowaning, Espanola, Mindemoya, Manitouwadge and Little Current,” said Mr. Brown. Monday’s announcement is a key part of the government’s ‘Open Ontario Plan’ to provide more access to health care services, while improving quality and accountability for patients. Mike is happy to note that the Algoma-Manitoulin riding now has 10 approved Family Health Teams – more than any other riding in the province. He has long been a strong supporter of the Family Health Team concept as a workable solution to the province’s health care ‘crunch’ and doctor shortage. Family Health Teams provide care closer to home by bringing together health care professionals such as Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Social Workers and Dieti- cians. Working together, they offer quality team-based care while also attaching more patients who don’t have a regular family doctor to one in their community. They also help reduce demand on hospital emergency departments by providing non-emergency care. The addition of 30 new teams is part of Ontario’s commit- ment to the creation of 200 Family Health Teams. These teams are currently providing care to over 2.3 million Ontar- ians and serving over 393,000 previously unattached patients. The province also operates Health Care Connect, a program aimed at helping people find a family doctor or Nurse Practi- tioner in their community. According to government statistics, over 900,000 Ontarians have been attached to a family doctor since 2003. Government figures also reflect an increase in the number of doctors, citing 2,886 more doctors practicing now, than in 2003. It’s expected that, once all 200 teams are operational, they will provide access to primary care for nearly 2.7 million Ontarians. “What makes these Family Health Teams so valuable is that each one is developed with the needs of the community in mind. These additional 30 new teams will provide even greater access to quality heath care for people in the community.”said the Honourable Deb Matthews, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. The concept appears to also have the enthusiastic support of the Province’s doctors. Dr. Mark McLeod, Presi- dent of the Ontario Medical Association says “We are thrilled with today’s announcement of an additional 30 Family Health Teams opening their doors province-wide. These teams will not only provide Ontarians with access to a doctor in their community, but to a team of health care professionals that can provide patient-centred care.” In addition, the government has announced the creation of 25 Nurse Practitioner-led clinics, which are expected to provide care for more than 40,000 people. NewDevelopments in Northern Health Care!IT’S BEEN A BIG WEEK for Northern healthcare. MikeBrown, MPP, Algoma-Manitoulin, announced Monday thatthere will be two new Family Health Teams established, toserve the Batchewana and Blind River communities. Ontariois creating 30 new Family Health Teams across the provinceto provide better access to family health care.

“I am pleased that Algoma-Manitoulin has received two moreFamily Health Teams, in addition tothose previously approved inWawa,Elliot Lake, Chapleau, Manitowaning,

Monday’sannouncement is a key

part of the government’s‘Open Ontario Plan’ to provide more

access to health care services, whileimproving quality and accountability forpatients. Mike is happy to note that theAlgoma-Manitoulin riding now has 10approved Family Health Teams – more

than any other riding in theprovince.

He has long been a strong supporter of the Family HealthTeam concept as a workable solution to the province’s healthcare ‘crunch’ and doctor shortage.

Family Health Teams provide care closer to home by bringingtogether health care professionals such as Physicians, NursePractitioners, Registered Nurses, Social Workers and Dieti-cians. Working together, they offer quality team-based carewhile also attaching more patients who don’t have a regularfamily doctor to one in their community. They also help

Network (NE LHIN) that three new Nurse Practitioner-ledclinics will be located in Capreol, North Bay and Thessalon. The clinics are in addition to the three already located inNortheastern Ontario in Sudbury/Lively, Sault Ste. Marie, andthe French River.

Nurse Practitioner-led clinics are a great option for people inneed of primary care. Practitioners are able to treat commonillnesses, and injuries and order lab tests, X-rays and otherdiagnostic tests. Nurse Practitioners work with doctors, nursesand health care providers to offer a team-based approach tofront-line care.

North East LHIN CEO Louise Paquette notes that more front-line care options such as Nurse Practitioner-led clinics, FamilyHealth Teams, community health centres and nursing stationsare an important part of the solutions to many of our region’slongstanding health care issues. “This week has brought excel-lent health care news for people living in NortheasternOntario. Greater access to more health care professionalssupports better patient care and helps to ease alternate level ofcare and emergency room wait time pressures currently facingour hospitals.”

More locally, Dr. Alan McLean, Physician Lead, SuperiorFamily Health Team stated, “This is an exciting opportunityfor our group to give patients in Sault Ste. Marie the kind ofcollaborative and patient-centred care that Family HealthTeams provide.”

So here’s a snapshot of Primary Care in Northeastern Ontario:

533 family physicians practice in Northeastern Ontario. Ofthe province’s 170 Family Health Teams, 27 are located inNortheastern Ontario, including Blind River and theBaawaating and Superior Family Health Teams in Sault Ste.Marie.

There are also 6 Community Health Centres (CHCs) inNortheastern Ontario. These are not-for-profit organizationsfunded by the LHIN to deliver both primary care andcommunity services. There are currently no CHCs in our area.

In addition, Nursing Stations are sponsored through hospitalsand are stand-alone organizations. Most stations, or clinics, are staffed by Nurse Practitioners who work in collaborationwith a family physician. There are 16 Nursing Stations inNortheastern Ontario, but none in our area.

Unfortunately, NONE of these innovations seem to have yetreached OUR area. While our neighbours in the Soo, Thes-salon and Blind River have hopefully now received somebadly-needed healthcare relief, Algoma’s ‘North Shore’ regioncontinues to await news of the fate of our local hospital, ouroverworked doctors and our thinly-stretched health careresources.

Is there hope for us? Maybe so! According to sources in MikeBrown’s office, the issues here are being pragmaticallyaddressed, and a positive outcome is expected. Hopefully itwill come soon, and in the form of very good news!

St Joseph Island Plowmen’sAssociation 76th PlowingMatch

By Gail Murdock

THE ST JOSEPH ISLAND PLOWING MATCH was heldAugust 28, 2010 under sunny skies at the St. Joseph TownshipCentennial Grounds. Although the numbers were down thisyear, the competition was as keen as ever. The ground wastough to plow but the Plow persons were tougher, andeveryone completed their land on time.

Senior Tractor Class was won by TomMurdock followed byGlen Underhill and Keith Brown. Utility Class 3 or morefurrows winner was Ross Armstrong, then Mike Bringelsonand Rob Armstrong. Antique Class winner was Perry Coulterfollowed by TomMowery. Junior Tractor Class (15 years old orunder) was Bobbi-Lynn Murdock winning. Her Mom, CoriMurdock took the Women’s Tractor Class. The Senior Classsaw Jim Cruickshank winning with Harold Kent a closesecond.

TomMurdock took the Best Plowed Land in the field (theBernt Gilbertson trophy) with Glen Underhill coming second.TheW.L. Miller trophy for Best Plowed Land by a junior wentto Bobbi-Lynn Murdock, TomMurdock’s granddaughter. Shealso had third best plowed land in the field.

There was one team of horses belonging to Jim Garson.Everyone enjoyed watching them work and to see how it wasdone years ago. It also brought back memories to some of thecrowd.

The Judge, Keith Robinson of Cookstown, Ontario, commented that the plowers did a good job plowing. Keithplows at the International Plowing Match. He has also repre-sented Ontario at the Canadian Plowing Competition and hasrepresented Canada at the World Plowing Match.

In addition to the ‘regulars’, the match brought out many newattendees as well, including our summer residents and peoplefrom Manitoba who enjoyed the horse plowing. Some hadnever seen plowing done or been to a Match before. Most wentaway having learned something about plowing and the impor-tance of stewarding the land.

The match was a success thanks to the participants and thesponsors.Without sponsors it would be very difficult, if notimpossible. Thanks to McDougall Energy, the Township of St.Joseph, Northshore Tractors, the Algoma branch of theOntario Federation of Agriculture, Carl Thomas (RoyalLePage Real Estate), Kent’s Corners and the many people whodonated time or money.

Another Successful Season for Baseball and SoccerBy Jody Wildman

THE ST. JOSEPH TOWNSHIP BASEBALL AND SOCCER PROGRAMS had greatparticipation for the 2010 season with over 75 kids registering for baseball and over 70kids for soccer.

Slo-pitch baseball ran from early May to mid-June with the Senior and Intermediateend-of-season tournaments being hosted at our home fields, with Desbarats hosting theJuniors and Echo Bay hosting the Novices. Our teams played well with our Seniorsending up first, and Intermediates and Novices coming second in their respective divi-sions.

Our Junior coach assures us the St. Joe team should have been a contender for top spotin their division, but due to a technicality brought on by another team’s forfeit of agame, the best we can say is the results of the Junior tournament were “inconclusive.”The T-Ball and Intro programs also went very well with the Intro kids hosting a gameagainst the Desbarats team. The kids had a lot of fun and learned a lot from theircoaches and will be ready to make the jump into the “big leagues” in the next few years.

We’d like to thank baseball coaches and assistants Ron Dorscht, Raymond Ford, CoriMurdock, Jason Hill, and Carl Bowyer, and T-ball coaches JaneWildman, Jeff Mason,Patrina Roberts and Mitch Clark. We’d also like to thank umpires Ron Dorscht, VinceVernelli, Carter Dorscht and Carole Hunt-Ford, and those parents, friends and familymembers who helped out with scorekeeping and base coaching.

The soccer season ran from late-June to mid-July with two teams each from Echo Bay,Desbarats and St. Joseph Island in Divisions I and II, and one team each in Division III.Bruce Mines also had one team in each division. The season went well with the kidshaving fun and learning a lot from their coaches. The end-of-season tournament washosted by Echo Bay with Divison II kids getting a chance to try “indoor soccer” in thearena for some of their games. All teams ended the day tired and slightly damp, buttheir coaches report the kids played hard and had a lot of fun.

We’d like to thank soccer coaches and assistants Shirley Abel, Cori Murdock, MitchClark, JohnWells, Mark Schaafsma, Monica Feltham, Beth Stevens, Allison Bringleson, and Cindy Glover, and “football” coach Brian Madeley. We’d also like to thank refereesLetitia Bishop, Caleb Stinson, Chelsea Glover, Joel Monpetit, Darren McMillan, ColeHowson and Michael McDonald.

Important Warning to Parents!PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE MAIL your family receives! The Island Clippingshas received reports of local residents, some as young as 12 years old, receiving unre-quested ‘male enhancement’ product catalogues, which contain highly explicit photosand material.

The mailings are reported to be coming from the Men’s Journal of Health, BioactiveRejuvenix and the Rejuvenation Biocentre, all with an Apple Hill, Ontario returnaddress. Each appears to be a legitimate business, although the publishers use rentedmailing lists, which do not provide any qualifying information beyond name andaddress. They have no idea of what the recipient’s age might be.

According to Canada Post sources, this material is delivered in properly addressed, sealed envelopes, so from a postage standpoint, they are legitimate mail. Fortunately, there have not been many seen in our area.

While every adult has the right to choose his or her personal reading material or prod-ucts, parents may feel differently about what their children may be exposed to. If yourchild receives such a mailing, you can contact the publishers and demand that he orshe be removed from their mailing list immediately. If the problem persists, contactCanada Post’s Security and Investigations office.

In the meantime, perhaps it’s not a great idea to let the kids pick up the family mail.

One night a police officer was staking out a particularly rowdy bar for possibleDUI violations. At closing time, he saw a fellow tumble out of the bar, trip on

the curb, and try his keys in five different cars before he found his. Then he sat in the front seat fumbling around with his keys for several minutes.Everyone else left the bar and drove off. Finally he started his engine and beganto pull away. The police officer was waiting for him. He stopped the driver, read

him his rights and administered the Breathalyzer test. The results showed areading of 0.0. The puzzled officer demanded to know how that could be.

The driver replied, “Tonight I’m the designated decoy.”

At the museum are numerous artifacts of particular interestto me. As a warfare enthusiast, I enjoy reading about theinteractions that take place on and off the battlefield, as wellas the stories of individuals on and off the front line. Onesuch artifact is a bullet that was fired from a German rifle atHoward Fleming! The bullet is in very good condition, suggesting it had not struck anything hard. I believe it is veryinteresting to have been able to find and keep a souvenir thatwas meant to kill you….lucky miss!

Another item of interest is a pocket watch given to JimmyHarten from a German prisoner during the First World War.It is a beautiful watch, in surprisingly good condition, consid-ering its history. On the back of the watch under the lid isengraved “Eylinder H Rubis” which I assume is the name ofthe prisoner. I find it interesting that these two men sent tokill each other, under different circumstances could be quitecivil.

Finally, we have a collection of letters written to loved onesback home. I find it humorous that nearly every letter beginswith “Dear Mama”, and nearly every letter contains a sectionabout how thankful they are to have received tobacco orCanadian “fags” (apparently there is a sharp differencebetween Canadian and English blends of tobacco).

I find these military artifacts fascinating and I’m particularlyinterested in World War II. I own approximately 30 booksranging in subject from the Battle of Britain and Germantanks, to secret weapons and daring missions. I also have asmall collection of helmets including British, American, andGerman (which was taken as a souvenir by a relative over-seas).

The St. Joseph Island museum is a great place to learn aboutthe brave men and women who have fought and died for ourfreedom.

PC Doctorby George Skardis

QUESTION: My family gave me a new laptop computer. Sofar I have managed to learn how to turn this computer onand off, sign into Hotmail, read my email messages, and sendnew messages. My typing has me a little perturbed. There arejust too many typing errors in every email message that Isend. What should I do?

ANSWER: Edit your email messages before you send. No onetypes with 100% accuracy. Even the very best typists maketyping errors. The secret to sending out perfect emails everytime is not how well you type but how well you edit.

Every computer keyboard in this digital age comes equippedwith special editing keys. Have you discovered the DELETEkey and the BACKSPACE key? These delete keys are myfavourite edit keys and are found in the top right-hand areaof the keyboard. The DELETE key is sometimes positioned inthe bottom right-hand. In either spot, locate the key labeled“Del”. The BACKSPACE key sometimes appears without alabel but simply as a long left-facing arrow. Use the DELETEkey to remove typos to the right of the blinking verticalcursor. Use the BACKSPACE key to remove characters to theleft of the cursor. These keys remind me of a computer gamecalled Pacman. You can gobble up mistakes very quickly. Ifyou hold a key down too long, your keyboard will auto-repeat removing more than necessary.

Arrow keys for cursor movement are found in the lowerright-hand of the computer keyboard. These keys are notdestructive. The next time you spot a typing mistake smackin the middle of a long paragraph, use the left, right, up, anddown arrow keys to move the cursor without deleting allyour hard work. Tap LEFT ARROW and tap UP ARROW toposition cursor either ahead or after typing mistake. UseDELETE or BACKSPACE to remove the offending characters.

That’s six edit keys so far. The next four edit keys are usuallyunderutilized. All your editing will be much faster usingHOME, END, PAGEUP, and PAGEDOWN. Tap the HOMEkey to go immediately to the beginning of a line instead ofusing the LEFT ARROW key. Tap END to go to the end of aline without taping the RIGHT ARROW key. In a very longemail, use PAGE UP or PAGE DOWN to review your typing apage at a time. How many of us forget that these special editkeys are there?

The very last edit key is the INSERT key. Think of this keylike you would a black sheep in the family. The INSERT keylies like a rug and, tempting as it might be, has never everinserted a single character. Do not press the INSERT key. Ifyou accidentally hit the INSERT key, you will be placed intotype-over mode. As you type to correct any mistakes, oldcharacters begin to disappear. Press the INSERT key again totoggle back into normal insert typing mode. Let’s edit thoseemail messages.
