CONGRATULATIONS TO BRIAN READ (centre), who wasrecognized for his outstanding commitment to the ‘Ride ForSight’ at this year’s Northern Ontario event last weekend atStokley Creek. This year’s ride raised over $24,000 for thefight against blindness.

Brian has been collecting pledges and taking part in ‘RideFor Sights” all across Ontario for 31 consecutive years. He isshown here with two of the ‘Ride For Sight’ organizers, whopresented him with a Stanley tool kit and a High Miler ‘RideFor Sight’ mug.

The ‘Ride For Sight’ benefits the Foundation Fighting Blind-ness, which leads the fight against blindness by advancingretinal disease research, education and public awareness.Brian was quick to express his appreciation and thanks to allthe people who have pledged and supported his rides overthe past 31 years. “It’s not done yet though!” he quipped.

Knowing how dedicated Brian is to this worthy cause, par-don the poor pun, but we could see this recognition coming!

Well done, Brian!

Woman Charged in Single MotorVehicle Collision

On July 8th, shortly after 4:30 pm, the East Algoma OntarioProvincial Police (OPP) responded to a single motor vehiclecollision on Highway 17 in Johnson Township.

A vehicle lost control and drove into the eastbound ditch onHighway 17. As a result of the investigation, Sherry Ford, 54years of age, from Mississauga, Ontario, was issued a provin-cial offence notice and charged with: Fail to Drive in MarkedLane, contrary to section 154(1)(a) of the Highway TrafficAct.

The vehicle was towed and there were no life threatening in-juries.

The OPP reminds motorists that arriving safely at their desti-nation is the primary goal. Drivers need to be aware of vari-ous factors to achieve that goal.

Last Sunday was our annual Heritage Tea Day. What a perfectday it was, almost like we special ordered the weather; no rainin sight. It was a warm one but had just enough of a gentlebreeze to keep us cool.

We had plenty of delicious homemade pie and ice cold bever-ages and shade under our new big tent to sit back, relax andenjoy our live entertainment. What a lovely way to spend asummer afternoon.

I would like to thank all those who contributed pies, visitedthe museum, the band, Mike Cormier and Friends minusMike Cormier, the Historical Society guest speakers, oursummer students Hailey, Kyle and Liam and the board mem-bers who came out and helped. To all, I truly appreciate yourefforts.

You can still get a copyof the Island Clippingsat some of our regular“retail” outlets, includ-ing the Island Market, Gardiner’s Corner,Kent’s Corner, Kentvale Home Hard-ware, and in front ofthe Hilton Beach PostOffice, at no chargefor the duration of thework outage.

An Important AnnouncementAbout Island Clippings Drop BoxesWe will no longer be making regularly-scheduled pick-upsfrom our Drop Boxes. In other words, we’ll still be pickingthings up – we just won’t be doing it regularly as part of ourproduction schedule for each week’s issue.

Until now, every Tuesday at or around noon, we’d have tomake a trip around the Island to pick up contents for classi-fied ads or announcements – things that we mostly publishfor free as a community service. That’s actually a triple costto us.

Alternatively, we’ve tried calling the host locations and hav-ing someone check the box and read the contents to us. Thathasn’t been much of a solution either, and an imposition onthe host’s kindness when they’re busy doing their own jobs.

If you have something that you want to have included in thatweek’s issue, you can still place your ad or announcement:

By Email to: [email protected]

By Phone: 705 246-1635 from 9 am – 5 pmMonday to Friday or

By Mail to RR 1, Hilton Beach, Ontario P0R 1G0

Our Drop Boxes are located at Gardiner’s Corner (formerlyAmbeault’s) in Richards Landing, Kent’s Corner and theHilton Beach Waterfront Centre, in front of the Post Office.

Deadline for display ads is Monday at 3 pm.Deadline for classifieds is Tuesday at noon.
