Welcome to our 17th annualNewcastle Days!

Newcastle Days allows us to cele-brate and remember our history. Our city incorporated 17 years ago,but Newcastle was founded in 1869as a coal-mining town. It is the coalcarried from Newcastle that is attrib-uted to making the Port of Seattle adominant West Coast seaport.

Those days are long gone, butour rich history remains. It’s presentand future is even richer. The coalmines have given way to world-class golf courses, diverse housingdevelopments and new parks.

When this city incorporated in1994, many of you were with me.And a lot of you have joined us alongthe way. With each of us comes asense of community and pride thatwe can call Newcastle home. I thankCouncilman Sonny Putter, who hasbeen with me on the council since

our city’s incep-tion; he served asmayor from 2000to 2001. Sonnywill retire fromthe council thisyear after 17 con-secutive years ofcommunity, regional and civicduty.

This year, forthe second time,Newcastle was selected as one ofCNN’s Money Magazine’s Best Placesto Live in America. It’s not a secret tous that we live in a wonderful place.

Thank you to our GrandPresenting Sponsor Valley Medicaland our other sponsors. Also thankyou to our Newcastle DaysCommittee (Koleen Morris, chair-woman) and the posse of volunteerswho have made Newcastle Days

Newcastle Days celebrates our historyflourish each year.

As we wrap up a summer filledwith peek-a-boo sunshine and a trou-bled economy, we stand strong as acommunity. We come together at thefruit stand, our neighborhood restau-rants (we are spoiled with their offer-ings), Wednesday night concerts, pic-nics, cookouts and while shopping atour neighborhood stores.

Soon, we’ll watch children comeand go on school buses, pick outpumpkins and cornstalks, rake leavesand enjoy neighborhood Halloweenfestivities. We look forward toThanksgiving and holiday gatheringswith fireplaces and friends to sharewith in the winter months.

I salute each individual who haspride in Newcastle. Please join meand my family this Newcastle Days incelebrating our community heritage.

Very truly yours,Mayor John D. Dulcich

The Newcastle Historical Societywill have a “What is it?” table atNewcastle Days where people canidentify objects from the city’s past.

The table will feature old gadgetsthat would have been used aroundthe home and barnyard that areinteresting, especially to children.

There will also be old farmimplements, such as corn huskers, water pumps, etc. that are hands-on items for people to experience.

There will also be historical pho-tos and memorabilia on display, andthe Newcastle Historic Cemeterywill be open to the public.

When residents discover thecemetery “they are really proud tohave a special identity,” accordingto Pam Lee, who has been involvewith the Newcastle HistoricalSociety since its beginning.

The cemetery “is a source ofpride for the city,” she said. “It’s a

pleasant and peaceful place tobe.”

Q: What is a Pediatric Dentist?

Q: Would your child benefit from a specialist?

A: A dentist who has trained two or more years beyond dental school in the particular oral health care of children from infancy through the teenage years.

A: Of course! Pediatric dentists are the “pediatricians” of dentistry. Our focus is prevention, early detection, and treatment of dental disease. Combining expertise and kindness, with a bit of illusion, Dr. McDonald provides a positive and caring approach to dentistry for your child.
