New York Guernsey Breeders’ Association

On October

29, 2012, the

Guernsey

community

lost a close

friend. Joe

Axtell, hus-

band of Chris-

tel Axtell,

Youth Advi-

sor, of Ripley Farms, went to be the with

his lord and savior.

Joe Axtell graduated from Deposit High

School in 1976 and continued on to re-

ceive a Bachelor of Arts in Pastoral Min-

istries from Liberty University in

Lynchburg, Virginia, as well as a Master

of Arts in Biblical Counseling from the

Masters College in Santa Clarita, Califor-

nia.

Joe Axtell married Christel Ripley on

July 7th, 1979 and they were married 33

years before his passing and through

those years was blessed with children

Rachel, Andrew, Josh, Caylie, and Ben

along with three grandchildren, Josiah,

Levi, and Alexis.

Pastor Axtell served for more than 31

years as the leader of Sherman Bible

Chapel which was one of his true pas-

sions in life.

When not serving the lord, Joe could be

found supporting his children and wife at

the New York State Fair Guernsey Show

with Ripley Farms or other Guernsey

functions. He was often found ringside

taking pictures and helping out wherever

he could.

In memory of Joe Axtell, the family

wishes that memorial donations be given

to the Joe Axtell Memorial Fund in care

of Sherman Bible Chapel, 331 Lumber

Rd, Deposit, NY 13754.

This year, New York came out on top on the National Show Circuit claiming another

Champion title. This year, Mary Foote of Hartford owned the Reserve Intermediate Champion

Cow at the World Dairy Expo Junior Show and Honorable Mention of the Open Show. Hill-

side Acres Spider Aster, who is a Spider daughter, calved in September and just classified ex-

cellent 90. In addition to Aster, there were multiple New York cows that claimed spots in the

top three at both Junior and Open shows . Here are the New York Guernsey's that took top

spots on the Tanbark trail!

On November 10, 2012 the New York Guernsey

Board of Directors held their Fall Meeting that

took place in Syracuse, NY. With much discus-

sion about the fiscal state of the New York

Guernsey Association, it was decided to raise

dues for both Junior and Senior Members. Effec-

tive in 2013, Junior dues will now be $10 and

Senior member dues will be increased to $30.

This increase is to help offset the cost of the

Guernsey Journal that is given to each of the

members.

Another item of business was the expiring terms

of four members of the board. Though all mem-

bers are interested in serving another term, the

board is still looking for nominations for new

directors. If you are interested in running please

contact Wayne Foote (518)744-7943, Eric Craig

(518)232-2770 or Mary Beth Trombly at (518)

497-3210.

Lastly, committees were set forth for upcoming

Guernsey events. If you are interested in helping

with any of these , feel free to contact a member

of the committee.

tion and taken on the financial obligation of

serving on the board!

addition to the Dam/Daughter Improvement

award which will be awarded at the banquet!

These applications can be found on our website

at nyguernsey.com! Please mail production

award applications to Cindy Gallagher by

The date has been set for the Annual Guernsey

Breeders’ Meeting and Banquet! April 6,2013

the meeting will take place in the Hilton Garden

Inn, Watertown, New York and will be hosted

by the Northern District.

During the day, both the Junior and Senior As-

sociations will have meetings to conduct busi-

ness which will then be followed by an awards

banquet. Look for further details coming soon

about the day’s schedule.

New York Spring Show & Guernsey Sale

If you are interested in consigning an animal

please contact Wayne Foote at (518)744-7942,

Cindy Gallagher at (315)415-2295, or Roland

Ripley at (315)496-2281.

The Youth and Open Show will take place on

April 13th at 1pm and Adam Liddle will be the

judge of the show. In the past years, show num-

bers may have been down but the quality has

overpowered many of the other breeds. Be sure to

help represent the Guernsey Breed by showing

off the best of your herd at the show!

The New York Spring Carousel Show and Sale

are fast upon us; both are taking place at the New

York State Fairgrounds from April 12th-15th!

The Guernsey Sale this year will be on April 12th

at 6pm, along with other protein breeds. We are

looking for consignments for the sale again this

year and would like to feature strong pedigree

animals with great show potential, which is why

many youth purchase their first Guernsey from

this sale! All animals in the sale will be entered in

the Guernsey Show free of charge to the buyer; so

we urge you to either consign a nice heifer or

purchase a great show calf.

Juniors: We NEED

your help with the

fitting and care of the

sale animals! It is

not all work, it is a

lot of fun! Please

contact Mary Foote

at (518)321-1152 if

you are interested in

helping with the sale!

As this year winds down,

you, as a junior member,

have a lot of opportunities

just around the corner.

First off, the Junior

Achievement Awards are

due March 1, 2013. This is a great way to show-

case your accomplishments with the Guernsey

breed! I recommend that you fill out the applica-

tion because it will be useful if you apply for the

National Outstanding Guernsey Youth Award.

year representing the Guernsey breed at state fair

and Guernsey Functions. If you are interested,

Do you know someone who wants to own their

own Guernsey Calf? The Guernsey Scholarship

Calf program is a great way to welcome new

juniors into our organization while getting more

youth involved with the Guernsey Breed. If you

know of anyone who is worthy of this great

award, urge them fill out the application and

have them return it to Christel Axtell by March

1, 2013.

Hello New York Guernsey Breeders! This past September, I was very excited for the new up-

grade on my phone for turn by turn directions as I traveled to the All – American Guernsey

Show. Sadly, these turn by turn directions weren’t Betsy proof as I got lost on the way down.

But once I was there, I kept very busy. Because we had cows there as a family, I was changing shoes quite frequently. From wash boots to show boots to heels, I was able to take part in all

aspects of the show. There was an excellent turnout of exhibitors and cattle, with New York

being well represented. The All-American staff was great to work with and with that the Na-tional Shows were underway!

The Market Fresh slogan welcomed the National Guernsey Staff with autumn colored shavings, and a cornucopia of high caliber cattle-the World’s best. It was great to see everyone from around the country reuniting again with our

common interest, the Golden breed. The New York State Youth were recognized for State Herd. I am so proud to

be from such a strong state. The show and sale were a great success, with Guernseys distributed across the country. Working at the booth and handing out ribbons, I was able to walk among distinguished breeders and speak with

Guernsey enthusiast from as far as Finland.-They are looking for embryos, if you have any feel free to contacting

Seth or Brian.

Although the trip to Louisville started with four plane rides, I was happy to be there for my first time. Even though I

may have messed the ribbons up, I think I got them all sorted back out. (Let me know if you need an adjustment.) I felt so honored to be on the shaving with breeders and their animals of such success. By the end of the show, my

shoes had been stained green, but the experiences have been painted in my life forever.

The shows maybe finished, but the friendships and memories have just begun. This winter, I hope to catch up on

work around the farm but look forward to meeting with Guernsey Breeders from around the country. Although the

snow has yet to fall, God has blessed us all. With one more year, we are grateful all of you are here, with memories

and laughs, cherish every one as if it were the last.
