Sefer Bamidbar: The Book of Conversations Dovid Zirkind, Associate Rabbi

Without even telling us who they were, Parshat

Be’haalotcha recounts a story about members

from the Israelite camp who were prevented

from bringing the Korban Pesach due to ritual

impurity. The Torah reports their petition to be

included in the ritual and the compromise which

ultimately gave birth to the concept of Pesach

Sheini. This story teaches us a great deal about

the significance of Korban Pesach, about the

rules of tumah v’taharah, but it also hints at a

major theme of Sefer Bamidbar and contains a

powerful lesson about effective communication.

“There were men who were ritually impure from

[contact with] a dead body and could not per-

form the Pesach on that day. They approached

Moshe and Aharon on that day. And those very

men said to him….” (Bamidbar 9:6-7)

Rav Chaim Paltiel, (13th Century Tosafist) posits,

while we know very little about their identity,

from this one line, we know a great deal about

their character. The emphasis in the text cited

above highlights how these men handled their

misfortune and why they succeeded in creating a

lasting solution. They could have complained to

their families and friends when they learned of

their impure status; they could have spoken neg-

atively about Moshe and his rigidity. But they

did none of those things. The very same men who

were told they could not participate in the

Korban returned to Moshe to openly and directly

find a solution together.

Sefer Bamidbar is full of characters who did the

exact opposite of these men. Korach and his fol-

lowers, the Spies and their families all garnered

support and fueled the fires of vengefulness in

the privacy of their own homes. They spoke

about their leaders behind closed doors. By the

time the conversations were out in the open, the

damage was irreparable.

Contrasting the discord of these tragic episodes,

we also read about the daughters of Tzlofchad,

of the men of Pesach Sheini, who chose to forge

a different kind of relationship, an open line of

communication with their leaders. They never

shied away from expressing their pain, they nev-

er gave up hope that their leaders would have

compassion for their plight and via the strategic

and disciplined pursuit of truth, they were able

to craft a meaningful compromise with Moshe

and Aharon. Thus, argues Rav Chaim Paltiel, with

the little information we have about these anony-

mous men, the Torah constructs a paradigm not

only for leadership but followership as well.

When viewed as a series of communal conversa-

tions, the unit that is Sefer Bamidbar becomes as

relevant as ever; serving as a blueprint for suc-

cessful discourse in today’s Jewish community as

well. We have hopes and dreams for ourselves

as individuals and for our community as a whole,

but progress is only made where healthy conver-

sation thrives. Patience is important, compromise

is a must, and together we can follow Moshe

Rabbeinu’s lead and build a stronger community

together.
