Bikkurim: Gratitude for Present and Past Parshat Ki Tavo 5779

Rabbi Noach Goldstein, Assistant Rabbi

The dust is slowly settling from the most recent Israeli election, and while we may still have no idea who the next prime minister will be (the wait for our sanctuary renovation may seem like a breeze in comparison), any Israeli election is an excellent opportunity to take a momentary step back and marvel at the miracle we may so easily take for granted of a thriving Jewish polity in our homeland. Bikkurim, the opening mitzvah of our sedra, is all about gratitude for the Land. But it is more complex than that. We can identify at least two distinct ways in which the mitzvah of bikkurim plays with chronology in order to produce a more profound and layered profession of gratitude than a simple thank you, both of which are relevant to our current reality. First, the impression of the farmer’s declaration when he brings his first fruits to the Mikdash is that not only are the fruits new, but he himself is new to the land. “I profess today to Hashem your God that I have come into the Land that Hashem swore to our fathers to give to us” (26:3). Centuries after the Exodus, a tenth-generation farmer walks into the Temple and makes a declaration of gratitude that sounds as if he just got off the boat (figuratively) from Egypt! And this is the ethos of the farmer’s entire subsequent statement, as he traces the course of Jewish history from our descent to Egypt to our arrival in the Land, culminating with the farmer now bringing his first fruits. The reason for this seems clear. We can imagine how obvious it felt in the first year Jews ever brought bikkurim, right after entering and miraculously conquering the country, that they owed their enjoyment of the Land and everything in it to God’s generosity. The challenge was how to

transmit that understanding to subsequent generations. That visceral sense of newness, of not-to-be-taken-for-granted-ness, is preserved each year by transporting ourselves back to those early days and treating the year’s new fruits as if they were the first fruits we had ever harvested here. It is no coincidence that we recite these verses at the Seder night, the night we imagine ourselves having just left Egypt. The Chatam Sofer develops a second element as well. Chazal (Sifrei 297) have an extremely enigmatic that seems to interpret Ki Tavo’s opening verse as stating that Bnei Yisrael will merit to inherit the Land on condition that they enter the Land. To explain what on earth this could mean, the Chatam Sofer demonstrates from a number of examples that the Torah deems it essential to relate to Eretz Yisrael as our own even when we do not merit to dwell there. Therefore, what the Sifrei means is that if we live in the Diaspora with the attitude that the Land still belongs to us, that will generate the merit for us to truly inherit the Land and fulfill the mitzvah of bikkurim. It is inspiring to think that the Chatam Sofer advanced this theory in early 19th century Austria-Hungary, when the idea of a Medinat Yisrael was a distant dream and Jews had known nothing but exile for nearly 1800 years. We were indeed able to come back because of our inexhaustible faith that one day we would do so. The simple need for gratitude is obvious. But the mitzvah of bikkurim teaches that in order to properly sense and express that gratitude, we have to consider not only the present but the past as well, remembering both the thrill of our beginnings in the Land and the long years of faith that it took to get there.

ISRAEL UPDATE September 20th, 2019

Nearly 70% of Israelis Vote in Unprecedented Election On Sept. 17, Israeli voters returned to the polls across the country to decide the newest members of Israel’s parliament, the Knesset. These unprecedented follow-up elections, the first in the country’s history, were triggered by the Knesset’s dissolution vote in May after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was unable to form a new government. To encourage voter participation, Israel's Election Day is a national holiday. President Reuven Rivlin called it the "festival of Democracy." Parents were encouraged to bring their children to the polls and public transportation was free. Turnout in the race was 69.4 percent, higher than the previous election and notably higher than that of U.S. elections. Arab turnout was also up from the previous election. The President of Israel must now choose a member of Knesset to form the next coalition. The strength of the U.S.-Israel relationship is rooted in both countries’ shared values and common interests. Regardless of the composition of the new government, which has yet to be determined, the U.S.-Israel relationship must remain strong and continue to transcend partisan politics, for the benefit of both nations. Our synagogue partners with AIPAC, America’s pro-Israel lobby, in educating our community on issues affecting the U.S.-Israel relationship. We encourage you to learn more by contacting AIPAC at (202) 639-5200 or by visiting www.aipac.org.
