Top 10 Things you don’t learn while in college.

As an educator I had to do 3 things in order for my students to be successful in the classroom. Establish an environment that allows for all

students to be successful in your classroom. Be consistent in your actions. Communicate your expectations.

Past Advice – “Selective Amnesia, Buttons, Dancing and First Years”

Try to forget the bad things that a student does, remember the good.

“Let it go”, don’t let a student control your behavior.

Don’t “dance” with the student…be consistent ---broken recorder.

Don’t be a 15 year teacher, be a teacher in your 15th first year.

Establish an Environment for learning…

Methods that your content is delivered in. (multi-modal).

Room arrangement. (Efficient use of space, clutter?)

Cultivate a setting that promotes learning and excites the students.

Be Consistent…Be Fair

The most effective teachers are the one that the students know… the Agenda for the day when they come in… the rhythm in which you teach…(don’t be

Farris Buller’s teacher). Are Proactive not Reactive. Your

interactions and responses are insightful…thought provoking…but are also what is expected from your students. (This takes time to cultivate as a new teacher)

Expectations Communicated?

Continue to repeat the expectations (and rules) in your Learning Community.

Routines are necessary. (Advanced Organizers, Newsletters, etc.)

Classroom management (move your buttons).

The students should know what is coming. (even when your note there) If there is a substitute; your class should run

like clockwork.

Technology Literacy Standards for Teachers

Knowledge of available and emerging technologies that support the learning of all students.

Knowledge of the wide range of technologies that support and enhance instruction, including classroom and school resources as well as distance learning and online learning opportunities.

Ability to integrate technology into the teaching of all content areas.

Ability to facilitate students’ individual and collaborative use of technology, including classroom resources as well as distance and online learning opportunities when available and appropriate.

Ability to use technology to assess student progress and manage records.

Ability to evaluate students’ technology proficiency and students’ technology‑based products within content areas.

The common mistake is we try to add THE next innovative device into the classroom, instead of identifying the needs of the student

THEN, choose what is needed for the teacher to teach and the student to learn!

Note the purpose of using each program. Word – word processing, flyers, possibly

information to students.

Many school systems block YouTube and it is part of the Acceptable User Policy.
