Instrument operation

The 7010 software now directly controls the 7010 instrument. There is no need to run Chemstation in the background. Three i l b tt ll th t’ i d t k tsimple buttons are all that’s required to make a measurement.

Turning the lamps on

Lamp icon

When the software is first started, the lightbulb icon turns on. The “warming” state will display. The lamps must warm for 10 g p y pminutes before measurement is enabled. This ensures the lamps are stable and measurements are valid.

Making particle size measurements

When the “measure” icon is clicked, a spectrum is measured , pfrom the 7010 hardware. The particle type, fluid, and pathlength must be selected for the software to calculate particle size.

Editing measurement names

When a measurement is made, a time and date stamp will appear as the ID p ppfor that measurement in the spectrum list view. Clicking once will select that spectrum to be viewed in the spectrum view and particle size view. Clicking a second time on the time/date stamp will allow the user to edit the spectrum ID to a more descriptive name.

Mean particle size view

The particle size view can also display the mean particle size of all spectra in the document (or all selected spectra) as a bar chart This is especially useful in a time series measurementchart. This is especially useful in a time series measurement.

Restricting wavelength range

Due to absorbing molecules in the fluid, it is sometimes necessary to remove certain wavelengths from the particle size calculation. This can be done through the menu bar under “Data” or by right-clicking anywhere in the g y g g yspectrum view window.

Choice of algorithms to fit data – UV Autocorrect

Often there are UV-absorbing molecules in the fluid phase which are not correctly modeled in the fit. By default, the 7010 algorithm ignores these wavelengths if doing so improves the fit. If there are small particles in your sample you may need to turn this feature offsample, you may need to turn this feature off.

Calculation options

The 7010 particle size fitting algorithms use a variety of proprietary approaches to fit the measured data. In default mode, the computer automatically reports the calculation with the best fit to the measured spectrum. If the user wishes to force the particle size distribution to be monodisperse, fit a Gaussian profile, or expects the distribution to be broad they may force the algorithm to use this fit in the “calculationdistribution to be broad, they may force the algorithm to use this fit in the calculation options” window.

Time Series

The fast data acquisition time of the 7010 Particle Size Analyzer allows measurements of fast-changing samples not possible with other particle size measurement techniques.

•To acquire a time series, first, measure a blank.

•Then insert your sample. Select Instrument -> “Time Series.”

•Type the total run time desired, the number of samples, and

linear or log spacing between measurements in time.

StitchFor most measurements the high dynamic range of the 7010 is sufficient.

For measurements which contain extremely high attenuations along with extremely low attenuations where it is important to accurately measure both, the “Stitch” feature allows you to take measurements with two different path length cuvettes andwith two different path length cuvettes and combine them.

Simply select two measurements of the same sample with different pathlengths,same sample with different pathlengths, and go to Data->Advanced->Stitch.

Click the cursor (vertical red line) at the wavelength where you wish to stitch thewavelength where you wish to stitch the two spectra together. The longer pathlength sample will be used to the right of the red line, the shorter pathlength to the leftleft.

The Materials Library

The 7010 Particle Size Analyzer has a large list of materials to choose from in its materials library. To see the real and imaginary refractive indices used in the particle sizeimaginary refractive indices used in the particle size calculations, go to Data -> Advanced -> Materials Library.

Adding and editing materials

The materials library allows you to edit existing refractive index files and add your own. y

For example, you may copy an existing RI file to one with a new name, then edit the new RI file.

Making a new material

You can enter an entirely new refractive index into your ymaterials library. To do this, click on the gold “plus” icon, and enter the new material’sand enter the new material s name.

Measuring k

If the particle phase of your sample can be made into a fluid, for example if your sample is an emulsion or particles in your dispersion can be dissolved, k may be measured directly by the absorbance measurement

Deselect any particle or fluid selections, take a blank (either of water if your sample is a fluid, or of the solvent if your sample is dissolved). The resulting spectral attenuation measurement can be exported under “File-> Export Selected Spectrum Data.”

Transparent materials

The refractive index of transparent materials is well-modeled by the Sellmeier equation. If no k data is entered, the user has a h i t h th ft d t fchoice to have the software use raw n data or perform a

Sellmeier fit to the data. If a Sellmeier fit is performed, the wavelength range will be extended to 190 nm and 1100 nm g geven if the entered data does not extend over this range.

Sharing custom RI files

If you make a custom RI file and wish yto share your particle analysis result with another customer, you will need to also share the refractive index filealso share the refractive index file. The import and export icons in the Materials Library allow you to share

f fthese .rfi files.

Reporting

The software can generate a report of the measured data. To e so a e ca ge e a e a epo o e easu ed da a oaccess reporting features, go to File-> Generate Report or simply press Ctrl-P.

Licensing

Your 7010 software may be copied onto as many computers as you wish without y p ycontrol of an instrument, simply for data analysis.

For instrument control, a valid license key must be present.

Adding a licenseTo obtain the license go to the Agilent Licensing Website either by clickingTo obtain the license, go to the Agilent Licensing Website either by clicking

on Help-> License Redemption Website from within the 7010 software, or by navigating directly to http://www.agilent.com/find/softwarelicense

Follow the instructions on the website. You will need your Software Entitlement Certificate as well as your Host ID as reported by the Agilent License Notifier:

The Host ID will appear when you hover your mouse cursor over the blue key icon in your system tray.

After completing the steps on the website, you will receive a .lic file via email. Save the .lic file to the computer being licensed.

From within the 7010 software, select "Install License(s)..." under the HelpFrom within the 7010 software, select Install License(s)... under the Help menu.

Browse to your saved .lic file. You should see a bubble in the system tray that says that the license was installed successfullythat says that the license was installed successfully.
