SCIENCE NEWS

This term Year 8 has been exploring body systems. They have been studying the cardiovascular, respiratory, excretory, skeletal and muscular systems and performed dissections on a sheep’s heart and kidney. Students had to complete a group task and present their findings along with a model or diagram. Some students were very creative when making their models - there were hearts that could pump, respiratory systems made from Minecraft and even a digestive system made from Lego!

Ms S Durand - History Teacher

This week 8 Tolstoy is presenting their research on a chosen topic about the Medieval period, to complement their learning about the lives of people from this period. We had an amazing presentation today from Alec on medieval food. As well as encouraging a whole class sing-a-long to the song, 'Sing a Song of Sixpence....four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie", Alec even made 'pottager soup' and black bread for the class to try! This was a typical dish of a peasant living in the medieval times....a very hearty soup!

PRELIMINARY LEGAL STUDIES IN THE HOUSE

The School has entered 50 students into the Australian Geography Competition 2020, to be held on Tuesday 31 March during class time. There are limited spaces available, so entries will be taken on a first-come-first-served basis. This is an excellent opportunity to test your skills and knowledge against students right across Australia. See Mr. Burford in the HSIE Staffroom for details.

BUSHCARE

Our intrepid Bushcare volunteers went on their first outing this week down to Cadigal Reserve in Summer Hill to help save a local reserve from insidious weeds that are overtaking the domain of the native plants and diminishing the habitat for the local animals and birds. We met Adam from the Inner West Council who gave the boys a safety induction, taught them how to distinguish weeds from native plants and how to plant grasses. He also showed them the work that has been undertaken by our volunteers in previous years. This allowed the boys to see that what they do makes a difference. We ended up with a very hardworking group of boys, weeding and digging and planting and learning a bit more about both the local area and the importance of biodiversity.

I was so proud to support Jordan Ddibya at the Zone Final of the Lions Club Youth of the Year competition this week. He had reached the Zone Final by competing and winning the club level for Burwood Lions Club. The Zone Final saw him competing against three other students. The competition was fantastic with Cate from St George Girls taking out the public speaking component of the competition and Jordan being awarded the overall winner. The students were interviewed and judged on their academic achievements, their contribution to society and their general knowledge among other things. Following their interviews, the students were required to answer two unseen questions for the members and guests attending. Finally the students presented their five minute prepared speech. Interestingly, all students chose to speak along the lines of respect and compassion. Jordan presented a very powerful speech on honourable men and the representation of masculinity and honour in the media and the influence that has on the young men of today. Jordan is off to the District Final on 28th March.

At the start of Term 2 – all Year 7 students at ABHS will be registered to participate in the Premier’s Sporting Challenge! The NSW Premier's Secondary School Sport Challenge aims to engage young people in sport and physical activity and encourages them to lead healthy, active lifestyles. The Premier's Secondary School Sport Challenge involves teams which will participate in a 10 week sport and physical activity challenge. Students will receive a personalised log in code for the PSC App, alternatively students can fill in a log book which you will need to fill out each week of the challenge, based on your physical activity for the week. It doesn’t mean you have to run a marathon, all you need to do is be a little more active, like going for a brisk walk, or play handball at lunch instead of playing watching TV or playing computer games.

1. Team/individuals are challenged to set goals to accrue time spent each week in moderate to vigorous activity which is undertaken in a range of sports and physical activity.

2. To achieve a Premier's School Sporting Challenge Bronze, Silver, Gold or Diamond Award, teams must accrue the following average time in sport and physical activity over a 10 week period:

Awards Daily average activity time per student Average time in minutes per week per student

Bronze 30 minutes per day 210

Silver 45 minutes per day 315

Gold 60 minutes per day 420

Diamond 80 minutes per day 560
