Technology and Journalism: An Unspoken Partnershipby Thomas Gallogly and Becca JenningsIt’s mindblowing to consider that with just the simple click of a button, we now have front row access to events and happenings that have taken place years in the past, or thousands of miles away. Information that used to take days, weeks, or months to mine is now literally at our fingertips through our smart phones, tablets, smart TVs, and computers. Thanks to this new technology, our understanding of journalism—and the journalist—have been challenged and transformed.

We all know that in today’s world, you no longer need to be a credible news source to broadcast a major (or minor) story to the masses. Beyond who’s telling the story, our engagement with stories themselves has also changed. Through video media like TV, YouTube, and Facebook Live, society today is confronted with footage of tragic events on a daily basis. What are the benefits and the consequences of this level of access?

“Journalism today is obviously deeply affected by the access that our current technology avails us,” said Honor Killing playwright Sarah Bierstock of the role of technology and the media. “We, the

public, are seeing details of war, poverty and crime — globally and in the U.S. — in ways we never have before because of this access (cell phones, video, Facebook, Skype, you name it). And with that information comes new questions: Who monitors how that information is shared/relayed? Is it the media? And if so, are the media our truth tellers?”

Instantaneous information has become more than an amenity—it’s become an expectation in the modern world. Countless news sources exist and deliver information at such a rapid speed that the information being shared is not always trustworthy. In a race to attract the most clicks, eyeballs, and ratings, more than a few have argued journalism has shifted its focus, and sometimes has compromised its integrity. Consumers are now being encouraged to question the legitimacy of the information that crosses their screens. “I think how information gets relayed and in what context is really important to think about,” said Bierstock.

In this digital age, it’s not entirely clear what’s next for journalism or the journalist. But more than likely, the answer is at our fingertips.

WOMEN’S ADVOCACY GROUPS

From Pakistan to Sarasota County, groups are tirelessly working to advocate for women’s issues. Founded by women, for women, these organizations provide education, opportunities, and a voice to women and girls around the globe. Here are a few of them:

Honour Based Violence Awareness Network (HBVA) | An online digital resource center designed to help those fighting against honor-based violence and forced marriage in Europe and the United States. Founded by Joanne Payton and artist/activist Deeyah, HBVA is a global network that makes data and research easily accessible to those who wish to learn more about honor-based violence. www.hbv-awareness.com.

The AHA Foundation | Established in 2007, The AHA Foundation focuses on supporting women at risk of honor violence here in the United States. Named for its founder Ayaan Hirsi Ali (a survivor of honor-based violence as a child in Somalia), the Foundation provides counseling, information, and assistance to women and girls facing honor violence. www.theahafoundation.org.

Malala Fund | Founded by Pakistani Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai in 2013, Malala Fund is an organization dedicated to ensuring that girls all over the world receive twelve years of free, safe, and quality education. The program’s Gulmakai Network initiative works with organizations in Pakistan, Nigeria, Lebanon, Turkey, and Afghanistan to overcome barriers that prevent girls’ education and helps them become strong leaders. www.malala.org

National Organization for Women (NOW) | The largest organization of grassroots feminist activists in the United States, with hundreds of chapters spanning all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Since its founding in 1966, NOW has been dedicated to leading societal change, eliminating discrimination, and achieving equal rights for women and girls in all aspects of life. From legislative action to mass marches and rallies, NOW is committed to an intersectional, holistic approach to women’s rights. www.now.org.

Women’s Resource Center | The Women’s Resource Center has been serving the women of Sarasota and Manatee Counties since 1979, when the organization was founded by a coalition of 19 women’s groups. Through various programs available at no or low cost, the Center provides local women with life skills training, career planning, and educational scholarships. www.mywrc.org

SEASON UNDERWRITERSthe fabulous arts community that is Sarasota.

SHIRLEY FEIN My support of FST was immediate. I felt a comfortable intimacy and a grandeur regarding their intellectually stimulating and entertaining performances. I salute FST for having exceptional management, a friendly and caring staff, and performers extraordinaire! It is my sincere pleasure to be a sponsor of the 2017-18 Winter Mainstage Season, full of new and exciting productions for us all to enjoy. See you there!

WENDY & BOB GRADY We were so impressed when we first visited FST, that we immediately wanted to become involved. Whenever you come across a system as unique as FST’s, where the key to getting art into the hearts of so many has been found -- in a comfortable and easily accessible way -- you know you’ve spotted a winner. We are proud to be season underwriters and hope that others will join us in supporting FST’s important work.

GULF COAST COMMUNITY FOUNDATION Together with our donors, Gulf Coast Community Foundation transforms our region through bold and proactive philanthropy. Gulf Coast is a public charity that was created in 1995 through the sale of the Venice Hospital. Since then, we have become the philanthropic home of more than 650 families who have established charitable funds here, and we have invested over $260 million in grants in the areas of health and human services, civic and economic development, education, arts and culture, and the environment. Learn more at GulfCoastCF.org.

ROBERT & BONNY ISRAELOFF Our favorite FST story happened while attending a performance for the first time, many years ago and saying, “This is theatre! Do they have a season subscription?!” FST is thought-provoking, Broadway worthy theatre. We believe FST is important because it enriches

GERRI AARON To me, FST is a great theater experience in the respect that I’ve seen plays in New York City and then seen the very same plays here; they are just as good, if not better. Richard Hopkins is amazing; he continues to select plays that both confirm and challenge one’s beliefs. FST is a Sarasota treasure that keeps getting better.

GAELE BARTHOLD FST is family and an integral part of my life. Its community contributions are myriad and a model of theatrical excellence. Quality and diverse stage productions at affordable prices are but one component of FST’s offerings. Other contributions include extensive contact with local schools to foster student creativity and theatre appreciation, structured and wide-ranging educational programs for adults and children, community forums and other community outreach programs, and a strong commitment to new play development and excellence in the arts. FST is a gem which well warrants our widespread financial and artistic support.

ED & JUDY CHRISTIAN For business travel, we experience many towns in the US. We always ask the question: “What’s important about your community?” In Sarasota, the overwhelming answer is “It’s the arts,” followed with “We have a great theatre company with Florida Studio Theatre.” We are so fortunate to have such a professional and creative venue with so many facets. It is a cultural beacon in our community, and with your support, the future of FST will be bright.

GEORGIA COURT I love great theatre and FST delivers that. FST is among the best theatre companies I have seen, but it is more than a theatre company. It is an organization that recognizes it is part of the greater community - and it reaches out to that community in positive, productive ways. Having FST so accessible adds to the joy of living in

CO-PRODUCERSLES & CAROL BRUALDI We are happy to be part of the FST community. We believe that this venue brings new and edgy productions to the theater scene along with fine acting and direction. The wonderful pricing of all of the productions make it affordable so that many people can enjoy this fine company.

JIM BRUEN & JANE PLITT FST continues to produce theatre that inspires, entertains, and makes us think. We are delighted to help our community enjoy the richness of FST productions, starting with youth and WRITE A PLAY and concluding with these provocative plays.

HARRIETTE BUCKMAN Other producers and co-producers have said it all with regard to why they so strongly support FST. Its mission resonated with the Buckman’s and our support was made in loving memory of Fred whose enjoyment of theater, orchestra, and opera was lifelong.

JOEL & SANDY CUBA Florida Studio Theatre is much more than just a theatre. FST’s involvement with children and adults though its education programs makes it a community asset that anyone can access. We really enjoy the many forums and special events. FST does as much off stage as on stage. For these reasons we have been increasingly involved with FST

SEASON UNDERWRITERSour community; it helps make Sarasota what it is. This is why we have proudly contributed to past expansions — especially the new Gompertz Theatre complex — to aid FST’s mission in being even more accessible to the public.

ERNIE KRETZMER IN LOVING MEMORY OF ALISA KRETZMER I would describe FST as uncommonly intimate theater that is well-articulated and succinct. FST is important to me because it is the perfect window to take in the American contemporary theatre scene. A favorite play was Golda’s Balcony; superbly acted. I continue to support FST’s five stages of engaging theatre.

DENNIS AND GRACI MCGILLICUDDY FST is important to us because we believe so strongly in the transformative power of the arts. For close to 30 years now, we have been so fortunate to experience first-hand how that transformative power works its magic in the hands of an organization that is not only experienced and dedicated, but so highly skilled in its craft. The values of the theater and its leadership, as reflected in its mission and as manifested in its work, whether it be on the mainstage, in the cabaret, in its education and community outreach programs: these are values that we so strongly believe in. As a consequence, it is a privilege for us to be a part of, and supportive of this great theatre.

ANNE H.S. NETHERCOTT When asked to define giving, Anne said: “My mother used to say the best way to find you is to lose yourself by focusing on the needs of others rather than on oneself.” So giving has always been an important family value, which in childhood was reinforced by the community experience of surviving the Depression. Anne is proud to be a supporter of FST.

GAIL & SKIP SACK Florida Studio Theatre brings world class acting and phenomenal, thought-provoking plays to Sarasota. We’re delighted to support FST in this mission.

DOROTHY WALDRON I support FST for its diversity of programming: Mainstage, Cabaret, Improv, WRITE A PLAY children’s program, summer camp, adult education classes, and the VIP program for special needs children. It is truly a wonderful community asset.

CO-PRODUCERSand plan to continue on this path.

TOM & CELINA FORRESTER We both love theatre. Celina especially appreciates the quality and breadth of FST’s offerings. While Tom enjoys the Cabaret and Mainstage plays, he finds the Stage III series to be particularly clever and thought provoking.

RON & SHIRLEY GOSSETT We came from West Michigan. During our first venture to downtown Sarasota, we saw this historic looking little old gray building. Curious cats that we were, we ventured inside, stayed for a production, and have been hooked ever since. We are proud to support FST.

BEN & JUDITH HANDELMAN We support FST because we like many of the shows they produce. We appreciate that they are different from the usual run of the mill productions you might see in other theatres.

ELAINE M. KEATING Ed Keating retired to Sarasota about the same time that Richard Hopkins and Kate Alexander started the tiny theatre group that eventually grew into the exquisite five theatre complex we have here today. He was so impressed with Richard and with the wonderful plays being produced on “a shoestring.” I remember how surprised Ed was to learn that the Mainstage was to be called the Keating Theatre. Ed is gone now. I’m certain he would be so proud of how you have evolved. Great theatre! Accessible to everyone!

BARBARA LUPOFF FST has been a passion of mine for many years. The reason is very simple: it is an organization that is creative, has a social conscience and stimulates my brain. On a personal level, watching the development of the first play I co-produced from the first read-through to rehearsals to opening night was both an adventure and an education. It is live professional theatre at its best!

INA SCHNELL I have been an avid supporter of FST for over 20 years for three major reasons: First, FST’s entertaining plays emphasizing the human condition offers us a special insight and connection to the world, where our opinions may change, through freeing us and challenging us to consider our assumptions. Secondly, the inspiring WRITE A PLAY program which reaches 50,000 children yearly. And third, FST’s low ticket prices that make it possible for so many to be able to afford to attend.

SALLY YANOWITZ Florida Studio Theatre is a wonderful organization that continually does new and innovative work. I love the theatre and being able to support the plays on the co-producer level has become a joyous part of my life! The arts are important and FST honors their importance.

The HERALD-TRIBUNE MEDIA GROUP enjoys a history in this community that spans more than 90 years. Partnering with organizations such as Florida Studio Theatre allows us to contribute to our region’s rich creative culture in Sarasota, Bradenton, and Venice providing an unparalleled media landscape through the newspaper, HeraldTribune.com.
