Files and Folders
A file, or document, is a collection of data that has a name and is stored in a computer
Organize files by storing them in folders
Many places to store folders and files:
Flash drives (removable or USB drives)
Compact discs (CDs)
Hard disks

Organizing Files and Folders
Windows stores important files it needs to turn on the computer in its root directory (C: drive). Called System Files.
Folders stored within other folders are called subfolders

The File Path
The file path is a notation that indicates a file’s location on your computer
F:\FM\Tutorial\Holiday.bmp
F: is the drive name
FM is the top-level folder on drive F
Tutorial is a subfolder in the FM folder
Holiday.bmp is the full filename with the file extension

File extension
A file extension identifies file type and indicates program in which file was created
Example: resume.docx

Creating a folder
Moving and Copying Files
Moving a file removes it from its current location and puts it in a new location
Copying places the file in both locations

Deleting Files and Folders
Recycle Bin holds deleted files until you remove them permanently by turning off your computer.

XP Using Sticky Notes Go to “Start”. Click on “All Programs”, then click
“Accessories.” Choose “Sticky Notes.”
The sticky note will appear on your desktop. Write a note to yourself, a “to do” list, whatever.
Highlight the text you’ve written and use the following commands if you want to: Ctrl B to make the text bold
Ctrl I to make the text italics
Ctrl U to underline the text
Ctrl T to “strike-thru” the text
Ctrl Shft L to put it in the form of bullets or a numbered list (once for bullets, twice for numbered list)
Ctrl Shft > to increase size of text

Using the Calculator Go to “Start”. Click on “All Programs”, then click
“Accessories.” Choose “Calculator.”
The calculator will appear on your desktop.
Click on the buttons on the keypad to enter numbers or symbols.
Click on “X” in upper right corner to put calculator away. (No, your calculations will not be saved.)

Working with Compressed Files Compressing (zipping) a folder:
If you compress a folder it takes up less disk space
And, it allows you to transfer files more quickly
Extracting (unzipping) a file creates an uncompressed copy of the file in a folder you specify, while the original file remains in the compressed folder
