The RedHawks polished off a four-game sweep of the Z's last night, only the fourth time in the 22-year history between the clubs that OKC claimed a series sweep in New Orleans (July 2009, July 2003 and June 1998). The teams had entered that series having split the last 54 meetings at Zephyr Field dating back to 2007. YESTERDAY’S NEWS – Oklahoma City exploded for six runs in the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie and completed a four-game sweep with an 8-2 win over the Zephyrs. George Springer and Jon Singleton greeted Z's reliever Chaz Roe with back-to-back home runs leading off the eighth, and the RedHawks added some insurance against Rett Varner on a two-run single by Ronny Torreyes and a two-run double by Gregorio Petit. Justin Bour had three hits to lead the Z's, and kickstarted a third-inning rally with a double off the wall, coming around to score on a sacrifice fly by Rob Brantly. Josh Rodriguez gave NOLA a short-lived lead with a fifth-inning home run, his second of the year, but the RedHawks answered in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Japhat Amador. Zephyrs starter Adam Conley allowed two runs and four hits and had six strikeouts in 5.1 innings. ON THE HILL – Elih Villanueva takes the mound for his second start of the year. In his season debut on Sunday vs. Colorado Springs, Villanueva took the loss despite limiting the Sky Sox to two runs (one earned) on five hits in 5.0 innings, with five strikeouts and no walks. The loss was the 23rd of his Zephyrs career, tied with Mark Guerra (2000- 02) for fifth-most in franchise history. In 69 career outings (53 starts) with New Orleans, Villanueva owns a 5.93 ERA (109 ER / 165.1 IP) on the road, compared to a 3.13 ERA (57 ER / 164.0 IP) at Zephyr Field. In eight previous games (six starts) against the RedHawks, Villanueva is 1-4 with a 3.95 ERA. OPENING TRENDS – Without a win since Opening Day, the Zephyrs' 1-7 start is the worst in the team’s 22-year history and its poorest home record to begin a season since 2009 when it lost its first nine games at Zephyr Field. The seven- game losing streak is also the Z’s longest since they lost 13 in a row July 11-25, 2009, during which they also dropped nine straight home games. THE WHIFF – Zephyrs pitchers struck out nine Oklahoma City batters Thursday and fanned 40 in the four-game series, the same total it struck out in the season-opening four-game set vs. Colorado Springs. The New Orleans pitching staff’s 80 strikeouts through the first eight games are second in the PCL behind Iowa (81). NEED RELIEF – The Zephyrs bullpen blew its fourth save opportunity of the season when Carter Capps allowed the tying run to score in the sixth inning last night. Chaz Roe then allowed five runs in one-third of an inning in the eighth, and Rett Varner gave up another in a six-run frame in his first appearance of the season, which helped balloon the bullpen ERA from 3.40 to 4.64. The six runs were the most allowed by the Zephyrs in one inning since Albuquerque scored six times in the fifth inning last 6/9. FAR FROM BOUR-ING – Justin Bour went 3x4 with a double to extend his hitting streak to eight games. He has hit safely in every game this season and is one of three hitters in the PCL with a hit in each of his team's first eight contests. Bour went 6x15 and scored three of the nine runs New Orleans tallied in the four games vs. the RedHawks. The Zephyrs have batted a combined .134 (31x232) for the season outside of Bour’s .414 (12x29) average, which ranks 10th in the PCL. Bour is also tied for ninth in total bases (19) and tied for seventh in extra-base hits (6). CRAZY EIGHTS – The Zephyrs have allowed exactly eight runs to opponents in four of their eight games to open the season, losing by a combined score of 32-6. New Orleans had not allowed eight or more runs four times in an eight- game stretch since June 22-29, 2012. OFFENSIVE STRUGGLES – The Z’s have scored two or fewer runs in seven of their first eight games, after setting a franchise record by being held to two or fewer runs 54 times last year. The only time NOLA has scored more than two runs was when they plated four first-inning runs in a 6-4 loss to Oklahoma City on Monday. ROSTER MOVES – A day after being activated from the disabled list, the Zephyrs placed reliever Rett Varner back on the DL with a right groin strain and added left-handed reliever Greg Nappo from AA Jacksonville. NAWLINS NOTES – Mark Canha and Rob Brantly each had a hit Thursday to extend their hittings streaks to four games … The Z's went 1x4 with runners in scoring position Thursday and are 7x46 (.152) with RISP for the season … The Zephyrs' five strikeouts Thursday were the fewest in a game this season … The Z's are 14-11 in Oklahoma City over the last three seasons. 2014 SEASON LAST START – Villanueva took the loss in his first start of the season on 4/6 vs. Colorado Springs but allowed one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts. The Zephyrs offense, however, scored only a single run in the third inning of a 2-1 defeat. His five K’s were his most since he had eight last 4/23 at Round Rock, a span of five starts. HAUNTED BY REDHAWKS – Villanueva has lost four of his six career starts against Oklahoma City, with his only win coming the last time he faced the RedHawks on July 12th, 2012 when he held them scoreless on six hits through 6.0 innings with three strikeouts and a walk. He did not face Oklahoma City in 2013. CLOSE CALLS – With a 2-1 loss 4/6 vs. Colorado Springs, seven of Villanueva’s last nine starts have been decided by a single run. The Zephyrs are 4-3 in those games. TOUGH ON LEFTIES – The five left-handed hitters in the Colorado Springs lineup went 2-for-13 (.154) against Villanueva with four strikeouts, while righties went 3-for-8. In his Zephyrs career, Villanueva has had more success against right-handed hitters (.271) than lefties (.299). BACK FOR MORE – Villanueva is in his fourth season with the Zephyrs. He has a career record of 18-29 in 69 appearances (53 starts) with a 4.54 ERA. The Z’s used him as a reliever for 16 games in 2012, a year after the Marlins called him up to start against the Philadelphia Phillies. He took the loss in an 8-1 defeat, as he allowed eight runs in three innings for his only big-league appearance.

2013 IN REVIEW INJURED NO MORE – Villanueva came back from the disabled list on 8/18 after spending three months on the shelf with an elbow injury. He pitched 5.0 innings and gave up two runs in a no-decision in his return start in a 4-3 win over Iowa.

THE CLOSER - Villanueva started the season finale for the Zephyrs on 9/2, marking the third consecutive season he started the last game of the Z’s season. He allowed three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk in 6.0 innings of a 4-3 loss to Albuquerque. The team also lost the season finales in 2011 and 2012 against Oklahoma City and Round Rock, respectively.

INNINGS EATER – Villanueva pitched at least six innings in six of his eight starts in 2013. His best performance came 4/23 in his final start before his injury when he pitched 6.2 innings with eight strikeouts in a 1-0 win over Round Rock. He finished 2013 with a 2-3 record and 3.50 ERA.
