Reflections on the

Cover Page

The original Marathi article of Shri Shreedhar Parab

published under the column ‘Mukhaprushtha

Pahatana’ in Yoga Varta's issue for the month of June

2016 has been excellently translated into English by

Shri Nitin Tawde (YVN's Yoga Teacher of 39th batch

of YTTC). The said English version of Shri Shreedhar

Parab's article in Marathi is being published

hereunder with profound thanks to Shri Nitin Tawde

whose mobile no. is 9819186655).

Seeing the first prize winning beautiful poster

prepared by Vandana Ranjalkar (one of the talented,

brilliant students of 40th Yoga Teachers Training

Course, Vashi) used most appropriately for the cover

page of this month’s Yoga Varta, the first thought

came in the mind that probably no other picture than

this could have so effectively communicated the

message of Internationl Day of Yoga embodied in its

tag line - ‘Yoga for Harmony & Peace...’ The artist has exhibited most

creative imagination in depicting the ‘Mother Earth’ who is representing

the human race on this globe with ‘Peace’ radiating on her face. The

two cupped palms, in a shape of earth coloured in blue and brown

represent water and land respectively. The joined palms indicate as if

the eastern and western worlds are united through Yoga. Finally, the

Universal Symbol of Peace - the ‘White Dove’ is casting the bright light

of tranquility on the globe and the face of ‘Mother Earth’ and in fact, on

all the human beings.

The Honourable Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi, while

addressing the General Assembly of the United Nations on 27th

September 2014, put forward a proposal for consideration of all Nations,

that 21st June be celebrated as 'International Yoga Day' worldwide and

masses shall be motivated to practise most beneficial Yoga. His proposal

was spontaneously seconded by leaders of various member countries

like United States of America, Canada, China, etc. As a result, the

proposal to observe 21st June as 'International Day of Yoga'- (IDY) was

passed unanimously on 11th December 2014 in the UN General

Assembly having 193 members. The Prime Minister personally took

interest in its organisation and hence, this special day having historical

importance from Indian point of view, was celebrated on a large scale

with lots of fanfare and with great enthusiasm across the entire Nation

and in various other countries too. Our saints and sages have cultivated

broader perspective that ‘whatever good ideas or thoughts we come

across anywhere in the world, shall always be welcomed, as per the

verse from ‘Upanishada’ - "Am Zmo ^Ðm… H«$Vdmo `§Vw {dœV…&' This is the

reason why our saints and sages feel that ‘the entire Universe is my

home’ - "ho {dœ{M _mPo Ka&' In ancient Indian culture, the various

scriptures and arts have been created for the overall development and

well-being of the human race by contemplating over whatever that is

seen useful and wonderful as per this shloka - "OJmÀ`m H$ë`mUm g§Vm§À`m{d^y{V&'One amongst them is ‘Yoga’ which is very important and useful

applied science. Every Indian must be feeling pleased and proud to see

our ‘Yogashastra’ being accepted at the Global level.

Even this date ‘21st June’ has been very thoughtfully selected as

‘International Day of Yoga’. This day marks the beginning of the ‘summer

solstice’ in northern hemisphere. This day is considered as an important

day in many parts of the world. More importantly, 21st June is the

longest day for all the countries in northern hemisphere. On this day,

the Sun is available for maximum period to provide its light, vigour and

life-supporting energy to the people in many countries. In the ancient

Indian scriptures it is mentioned - "gy`© AmË_mOJVñVñWwfü&' which

means the Sun is the Master of the Universe, Soul and Protector of all

Page 5: New `moJ-dmVm© YOGA – VARTA · 2019. 3. 2. · 2016 has been excellently translated into English by Shri Nitin Tawde (YVN's Yoga Teacher of 39th batch of YTTC). The said English

living beings. It is an age old concept that one can express his desire for

good health with the Sun God and gets the same fulfilled as mentioned

in this verse - "Amamo½`§ ^mñH$am{XÀN>oV²&' Considering all these factors, the

selection of the date 21st June as ‘International Day of Yoga’ seems to

be the most appropriate.

These days quite many days of every month are allotted for some or

the other specific purpose and are celebrated with great fanfare. Most

of them are celebrated only as some kind of event. More often, the basic

concept or the core idea is forgotten. Hardly anyone remembers such

days later on. If the ‘International Day of Yoga’ is also celebrated

ceremoniously only on a particular day and the objectives and purpose

don't remain alive in public memory, then this day too would fail to serve

its purpose of public welfare in true sense. However, seeing the way the

entire world celebrated the first ‘International Day of Yoga’ on 21st June

2015, and the second International Day of Yoga on 21st June 2016 with

sincerity and immense enthusiasm, it gives confidence that not only this

year but every year this International Day of Yoga (IDY) will be celebrated

with same enthusiasm and will provide an inspiration for many people

across the world to practise Yoga and to adopt Yoga as ‘lifestyle’. Swami

Kuvalayananda, the Guru of our honourable Nimbalkar Guruji and

Founder of Kaivalyadham Institute at Lonavala had long ago announced –

“Yoga has a complete message for humanity. It has a message for the

human body, for the human mind and for the human spirit”. Getting

inspired from the ‘International Day of Yoga’, if majority of people give

their sincere efforts, then the future of the mankind will certainly be

brighter. The science of Yoga has lot to offer to everyone in this world

for physical and mental health, containment and peace. Lack of mutual

trust is distinctly observed in today's world to a large extent. Not only

amongst the various nations but even within the country also, a lot of

dreadful and gruesome incidents like terroristic acts, battles, quarrels

and fights are taking place amongst various sects and religions on

number of reasons or disputes. No wonder, in such a scenario, if all the

peace-loving people in the world look upon ‘Yoga’ as a ray of hope.

Page 6: New `moJ-dmVm© YOGA – VARTA · 2019. 3. 2. · 2016 has been excellently translated into English by Shri Nitin Tawde (YVN's Yoga Teacher of 39th batch of YTTC). The said English

‘Yoga’ doesn't mean only some Yogasanas, Bandhas, Mudras,

Pranayamas & Meditational practices. Actually speaking, ‘Yoga’ is advised

as a multifaceted, peaceful, affectionate and healthy lifestyle that

establishes purity and honesty for the overall development and progress

of human being. The word ‘Yoga’ encompasses a far larger meaning. It

includes various branches of Yoga like Gyana Yoga, Karma Yoga, Bhakti

Yoga, Mantra Yoga, Tantra Yoga, Laya Yoga as also the Ashtanga Yoga (also

called as Raj Yoga) of Maharshi Patanjali and the Hatha Yoga which is the

most popular one today. Fundamentally, all of them were advised as path

for spiritual upliftment. However, very few people are ready for the

required dedicated, long term practice of Yoga under the proper guidance.

Generally, masses are attracted towards Yoga for psychosomatic health, ,

happiness, contentment, peace and for overall personality development.

Although the ultimate goal or the final destination of Yoga is to attain the

blissful state of Samadhi (Kaivalyavastha) that is to achieve the highest

spiritual status, not everyone is having the required zest or capacity for the

same. One thing is for sure that it has been experienced and proved that

the Yoga sadhak who treads on the path of Yoga as per his own capacity

too, gets the many benefits like physical and mental health, energy,

happiness, qualitative upliftment, proficiency in work skills and many

more. It is seen today that people from various countries are practising

Yoga with different motives. Amongst them, some have chosen Yoga

practices as simple supplementary treatment for diseases, ailments and

certain physical problems or as best preventive measure for avoiding such

diseases and problems. Yoga fulfills the various expectations of such

people quite satisfactorily when practised faithfully, with consistent

regularity and in a proper manner. That's why the verse given below, from

the famous scripture ‘Hatahpradipika’ is looked upon by all as a lighthouse

in an ocean of life, which is guiding as well as comforting for the mind -

Aeof VmnVßVmZm§ g_ml`_R>mo hR>…&Aeof `moJ`wº$mZm§ AmYmaH$_R>mo hR>…&& (h.à. 1.10)

This means Yoga is like a sanitorium for those who are suffering from

Page 7: New `moJ-dmVm© YOGA – VARTA · 2019. 3. 2. · 2016 has been excellently translated into English by Shri Nitin Tawde (YVN's Yoga Teacher of 39th batch of YTTC). The said English

various problems in the life and as a firm support like a tortoise for

faithful and ardent practitioners of Yoga who follow and study various

types of Yoga.

The word 'Yoga' is basically derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Yuja’

which means ‘to join’. From this point of view, it is felt that Yoga can be

very useful to unite all – young and old, males and females from various

different religions, castes, languages, cultures, etc. with each other. The

verse - "`moJ… H$_©gw H$m¡ec_²&' in ‘Bhagvad Gita’ by Yogeshwar Shri

Krishna clearly states that whoever practises Yoga, naturally experiences

remarkable expertise and utmost ease in every action. This way, if

people from various countries performing in different fields can elevate

their level of expertise by practising Yoga, then it is needless to say that

these countries too will progress rapidly.

The definition of health by World Health Organization (WHO) is very

much matching with the Indian concept of health in Yoga. According to

WHO definition, 'health is a state of complete physical, mental and

social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity'.

This comprehensive health depends upon five main factors. The first

factor is ‘genetics’ which is termed as destiny, fate, luck, merit or

demerits of the past , etc. This comprises of the virtues and vices passed

on from our ancestors. The next factor that follows is ‘environment’ or

the habitat where we live or work or spend our maximum time. It is not

possible to gain complete control or make any radical changes in these

two factors. Hence, these two factors are considered as non-changeable

or non-modifiable factors of health. The next three factors influencing

health are ‘Ahar’ (Intake), Vihar (Activities ) and ‘Vishranti’ (Rest). We

can change these factors, according to our needs, desires and as per

own capacity, means we can gain control over them. In that sense, Ahar,

Vihar and Vishranti are considered changeable or modifiable factors of

health. Yogeshwar Bhagwan Shri Krishna emphasises through the

aphorism below that it is very important for a Yoga Sadhak to adopt a

lifestyle comprised of appropriate Ahar, Vihar and Vishranti.

Page 8: New `moJ-dmVm© YOGA – VARTA · 2019. 3. 2. · 2016 has been excellently translated into English by Shri Nitin Tawde (YVN's Yoga Teacher of 39th batch of YTTC). The said English

`wº$mhma{dhmañ` `wº$Moï>ñ` H$_©gw&`wº$ñdßZmd~moYñ` `moJmo ^d{V Xþ…Ihm&& (^.JrVm-6.17)

This means, Yoga which destroys all sufferings is achievable to only

those Sadhakas who observe appropriate Ahar, Vihar, Vishranti, follow

right dealings in their work and the one whose sleep and awake timings

are balanced.

The happiness of mind is of utmost importance whether the Yoga is

followed with very hard practice for attainment of ‘Kaivalyavastha’ (to

achieve the blissful Samadhi for spiritual experience of the divine state

of getting merged into the cosmic existence) or practised for obtaining

overall health with the experience of physical, mental, social and

spiritual well-being. Mind becomes pleasant with the practice of Yoga

and the Yoga practised with pleased mind derives best results. Pleased

mind easily and quickly gets concentrated and can easily be brought

under the control of the Sadhaka. Only then the purpose of Yoga

Sadhana is fulfilled to a great extent. Many suggestions are offered in

Yogic Science to maintain and enhance the happiness of the mind. The

important guidance is given by Maharshi Patanjali for the Sadhakas in

the shloka below :

_¡ÌrH$éUm_w{XVmonojmUm§ gwIXþ…InwÊ`mnwÊ`{df`mUm§^mdZmV{üÎmàgmXZ_²&& (nm.`mo.gy. 1.33)

This means if we cultivate ‘friendliness’, ‘compassion’, ‘joyfulness’ and

‘equanimity’ towards the emotions ‘pleasure’, ‘pain’, ‘virtue’ and ‘vice’

and implement in the Yoga practice, then the mind will always be in a

pleasant state. It is felt that complex problems, disputes and quarrels

among various nations can be settled without shedding a drop of blood

only if maximum people in the world cultivate these four emotions

namely, ‘friendliness’, ‘compassion’, ‘gladness’ and ‘equanimity’ by

practising Yoga and thereby establishing friendly dialogue with a strong

desire of peaceful coexistence and solid foundation of trust between

the nations and certainly not by insane usage of deadly arsenal that is

amassed on a huge scale.

Page 9: New `moJ-dmVm© YOGA – VARTA · 2019. 3. 2. · 2016 has been excellently translated into English by Shri Nitin Tawde (YVN's Yoga Teacher of 39th batch of YTTC). The said English

The Ashtanga Yoga advocated by Maharshi Patanjali has eight limbs

namely, Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyan

and Samadhi out of which the first two limbs Yama and Niyama are of

slightly more importance. Amongst them, the five 'Yamas' advocated by

Maharshi Patanjali that is Ahimsa – non violence, Satya – truth, Asteya –

non stealing, Brahmacharya – non continence and Aparigraha – non

hoarding of more than necessary wealth or goods and amassing

materialistic objects greedily - are the kind of five self-restraints to be

observed while living in the society. The observance of these five Yamas

are essential for the Yogasadhaka for the peaceful social life as well as

the progress in Yoga. If people across the globe follow these five Yamas,

though not strictly 100% as ‘Mahavrata’ but to the best possible extent

as ‘Anuvrata’, then too all the people in the world can have a pleasant

experience of living on this planet with mutual cooperation, peace and

happiness. Like these five Yamas, there are five 'Niyamas' namely,

‘Shaucha’ – Purity (physical, mental and emotional), ‘Santosh’ –

permanent contentment of mind, ‘Tapa’ – solid and concentrated efforts

for prolonged period, ‘Swadhyay’ – (self awareness, introspection and

reading spiritual literature, contemplation, meditation), ‘Ishwar

Pranidhan’ – (to bow down to the all powerful, mighty creator of the

Universe after performing our duties). These five Niyamas are to be

observed devotedly by the Yoga Sadhaka for his personal health,

progress and elevation of all virtues. If the Yoga Sadhakas honestly

observe these Yama and Niyama to the maximum extent feasible, their

progress in Yogabhyas will be expediated and as the number of such

progressive Sadhakas increase all across the world, then surely the

human race can have the experience of heaven on this Earth itself.

The ‘Omkar Sadhana’ is of immense importance in Yoga. This shortest

single syllable, Mantra made up of three alphabets ‘A’, ‘U’ , ‘M’ and half

nasal consonant is extremely subtle and most effective Mantra. In the

ancient scripture namely ‘Patanjal Yoga Darshan' by Maharshi Patanjali,

‘Aum’ is described as the symbol of the almighty ‘Parmeshwar’ who is

attributeless, formless, unseen and without any beginning or end. It

Page 10: New `moJ-dmVm© YOGA – VARTA · 2019. 3. 2. · 2016 has been excellently translated into English by Shri Nitin Tawde (YVN's Yoga Teacher of 39th batch of YTTC). The said English

`moJdmVm©

means, this divine ‘Omkar Sadhana' lifts any Sadhaka who has adopted

‘Omkar Sadhana’ from heart to highly spiritual level irrespective of his

caste, religion or country. Hence, Maharshi Patanjali says "V‚mnñVXW©^mdZ_²&' means Omkar japasadhana shall be chanted with the full

awareness of meaning of Omkar. He further says that, with such a Japa

Sadhana, Yoga Sadhaka will gain subtle but very important spiritual

benefits alongside the many physical benefits. Omkar Sadhana has

incredible power of delivering sound health. Sadhaka can achieve

progress and the capability of facing any crisis by treading his way through

it with the help of Omkar Japasadhana.

So, with the auspicious occasion of this ‘International Day of Yoga’

on 21st June 2017, let's once again determine to practise Yoga

systematically, devotedly and consistently as best as possible by

incorporating ‘Omkar Sadhana’ and let’s all pray God by making slight

change in the ‘Pasaydaan’ prayer of the great Sage Shri Sant

Gyaneshwara as follows for spreading happiness and peace in the entire

world with help of this invaluable gift of Yoga Shastra presented by India

to the world -

AmVm {dœmË_H|$ Xod|& `oU| `moJ`k| Vmofmd|&Vmofmo{Z gd©OZm Úmd|Ÿ& `moJngm`XmZ h|&&

If majority of people in the world today come forward willingly,

loyally and confidently to accomplish this sacred mission, then this

'Third International Day of Yoga' on 21st June 2017 will prove to bring

forth for everyone in the world a future offering complete health,

happiness, contentment and peace. If it happens so, then all the peace-

loving people in the world will utter the famous quote of Shri Sane

Guruji with slight change as - Iam Vmo EH${M Y_©& OJmcm `moJ Anm©dm&...

LITTLE HELP IN NEED IS THE GREAT HELP INDEED!

Helping others in need is the noble attribute of a

gentleman. Cultured, polite and modest persons would

never refuse to help anyone caught in a difficult

situation. Courteous persons, irrespective of their

position in the society go out of the way to extend help

to the genuine needy and helpless people. It is,

therefore, rightly said that a friend in need is the friend indeed! A

thorough gentleman would never wait for being asked to help. Such

persons spontaneously and instantly do whatever needed to assist

anyone requiring help, without making any show of the help extended.

As against this, there are many persons who very reluctantly and

occasionally help others. Most of them make a big show of whatever

little help they might have extended on few occasions.

This is the story of those days when America had just got

independance. George Washington had became the first President of

America. People of America were very much pleased and satisfied. The

atmosphere in the entire nation was quite inspiring and enthusiastic.

The officers, workers and everyone were doing their duty honestly and

sincerely. On a rainy day, one officer was going to his office alongwith

his orderly for attending to some urgent work. The road was muddy and

rough. After halfway through, the car suddenly stopped as its one wheel

got stuck in a muddy pothole. The orderly came out of the car and tried

many times to get the wheel out of the pothole, but in vain. He was

completely tired and exhausted. The officer sitting in the car then came

Page 12: New `moJ-dmVm© YOGA – VARTA · 2019. 3. 2. · 2016 has been excellently translated into English by Shri Nitin Tawde (YVN's Yoga Teacher of 39th batch of YTTC). The said English

out of the car and started smoking and reading the newspaper. The

orderly again tried very hard to pull the car out of the pothole but could

not get the success. Soon one big car stopped nearby and came out of

it one well-built person. He started helping the orderly and within a few

minutes, they could get the wheel out of the muddy pothole. After

cleaning his hands and face, that person assured his help in any difficulty

and gave his visiting card to the officer before boarding his own car.

The big car had now gone far away. The officer then started reading

the card and was shocked to see the capital letters in golden ink

alongwith the official seal embossed on the said card - "GEORGE

WASHINGTON, PRESIDENT OF AMERICA.''

SHORT NAPS GIVE HAPPINESS...

Scientists have discovered a link between taking short naps and

happiness. While sleep in general boasts a wide range of health

benefits from increasing productivity to protection against hearts

disease, now it turns out that brief napping has some pluses all of its

own. And, they've even given the satisfied state that follows its own

name - nappiness.

Professor Richard Wiseman, from the University of Hertfordshire,

said, ''Previous research has shown that naps of under 30 munutes

make you more focused, productive and creative, and these new

findings suggest the tantalising possibility that you can also become

happier by just taking a short nap. Similarly, longer napping is

associated with several healthrisks."

CHILD LIKE LAUGHTER FOR MEDITATION

Seriousness is never religious, cannot be religious; seriousness is of

the ego, part of the very disease. Laughter is egolessness. Even laughter

is not just laughter where its purity is lost. You cannot even laugh in a

pure way, in a simple way, childlike. And if you cannot laugh in a pure

way, you are losing something tremendously valuable. You are losing your

virginity, yout purity, your innocence. Watch a child; watch his laughter -

so profound, comes from the very centre. When a child is born, the first

social activity that the child brings it with himself is smiling. One should

go on laughing the whole of one's life. If you can laugh in all sorts of

situations, you will become so capable of encounterning them - and that

encounter will bring maturity to you. I am not saying don't weep. In fact,

if you cannot laugh, you cannot weep truely. They both go togehter as

they are part of one phenomenon, of being true and anthentic.

Laughter brings some energy from your inner source to your surface.

Energy starts flowing; it follows laughter like a shadow. When you

genuinely laugh, for those few moments you are in a deep, meditative

state where thinking stops. It is impossible to laugh and think together.

They are diametrically opposite : either you can laugh or you can think.

If you really laugh, thinking stops. If you are still thinking, laughter will be

just so-so, lagging behind. When you truly laugh, suddenly the mind

disappears. And the whole Zen methodology is how to get into no-mind

state and laughter is one of the beautiful doors to get to it!

 Educational Excursion-cum-Seminar-cum-Picnic of Regular

Yoga Centres (R. Sunder, Yoga Teacher, Damle Yoga Kendra,

Matunga. Mob. : 9820577810)

It gives me immense pleasure to do this write-up on the captioned

trip organized by Mrs. Meena Pai (YCRC) in co-ordination with

Mr. Mukund Bedekar (Trustee, Yoga Vidya Niketan), and Mr. Durgadas

Savant (Vice Chairman, Yoga Vidya Niketan) on 18th & 19th March 2017.

It was an Educational Excursion-cum-Seminar-cum-Picnic to Lonavala

worth remembering for years to come.

All of us teachers assembled near the Damle Yoga Kendra, Matunga

on the morning of Saturday, the 18th March 2017 around the appointed

time and boarded the luxury bus waiting for us. We set off on our

journey a little after 6-30 a.m. Mr. Durgadas Savant joined us at Nerul.

On the way, Mr. Bedekar took the mike and narrated to us with his

characteristic humour the situation that prevailed during the fledgling

Page 22: New `moJ-dmVm© YOGA – VARTA · 2019. 3. 2. · 2016 has been excellently translated into English by Shri Nitin Tawde (YVN's Yoga Teacher of 39th batch of YTTC). The said English

days of Yoga Vidya Niketan. We took a brief halt at Khalapur for re-

fuelling and for stretching our legs a bit. Mr. Savant came on the mike

and explained to us about the forthcoming Maharashtra Yoga Utsav to

be held between 24th March and 26th March 2017. He said it is going

to be a mega event for yoga and requested our participation and

attendance at that event in large numbers.

We headed straight for the Narayani Dham temple whose precincts

are a thing of beauty to behold. It consists of three aesthetically designed

buildings surrounding lawns, play area, fountain, etc. The temple proper,

a structure made with marble interiors houses Lord Ganesha, Narayani

Devi and Lord Hanuman. The breakfast organized for us by teachers Mrs.

Lajwanti Gatkule and Mrs. Rajani Mhatre at the temple premises was

simply out of this world – poha, idli and mini uthappas washed down with

coffee/tea – all designed to pamper the palate.

After the darshan and breakfast, we went to Kaivalya Dham at

Lonavla which is at a stone’s throw from Narayani Dham. We were given

a warm welcome by Ms. Swati Bedekar who works for Kaivalya Dham.

One Mr. Bandu Kute, a seasoned officer of Kaivalya Dham, gave us a

brief lecture on the origin of the institution, its diverse activities till date

and the role played by Swami Kuvalayananda in fostering it. We were

taken around and shown all instruments and gadgets used by the

institution in the past. These were for psychometry tests and for

measuring various physical actions. We were taken to a room where

there were pits in which seasoned yogis used to sit without oxygen

intake for as many as 16 hours. We were also shown the gaushala and

the samadhi of Swami Kuvalayananda. We thanked the staff member

who showed us around the institution and left the place.

We reached the Durga Parameshwari temple at Karla around 12-30

p.m. and were shown to our respective rooms, each of which

comfortably accommodated five or six of us. After a quick wash and

brush up, we assembled at the dining hall for lunch. That simple saatvik

meal was most welcome after the heavy breakfast in the morning. Post

lunch, we got together to pursue another exciting event, viz. the

seminar. Mrs. Meena Pai had already communicated to us five qualities

envisaged by WHO for a wholesome life. Those qualities are : mobility,

meditation, learning, connectivity and generosity. We all teachers

divided ourselves into five groups and vigorously put forth our points of

view on the quality chosen by each one of us. It was a very enjoyable

and enlightening exercise.

After the evening tea, we went to the foothills of the Ekveera Devi

temple by the bus which was always at our disposal. Since the bus could

not ascend the steep winding road leading to the last point from where

you had to physically climb, most of the teachers opted to hire

autorickshaws to that point. However, a few of us adventurous ones

headed by Mr. Savant, undertook the uphill task of climbing 400 steps from

ground level, and made it to the top. After the darshan, we descended on

terra firma and returned to Durga Parameshwari – ravenously hungry.

Needless to say, we did full justice to the delicious dinner spread before us.

The tomato rice and rasam still linger on the mind.

After dinner, we got together in the hall and held a singing session,

catering to a receptive audience. Jokes followed songs, leaving everyone

in splits before retiring for the night. Since we were all bone-tired, we

straightaway hit the sack around 10-30 p.m.

Heeding the wake up call at 5 a.m., we had a quick wash and went

downstairs for the morning coffee/tea. Then we went to the hall where

Mrs. Pai began her session consisting of warming up asana-like exercises

and numerous other asanas related to the respective chakras in the

body. She first gave us a detailed explanation of the six chakras, the

bearing which each one of them has with various parts of the body and

their related functions. Since she had to cover a lot of ground, the

session was divided into two parts, first part : 1) Muladhar Chakra,

2) Swadhistan Chakra and second part : 3) Manipur Chakra, 4) Anahat

Chakra, 5) Vishuddhi Chakra, 6) Adnya Chakra and 7) Sahasrar Chakra.

The second part to be held after two other events.

Next in the order, Mr. Mukund Bedekar was in his element when he

conducted the auto massage session. He first gave a brief introduction

of what auto massage is all about and then got all of us to massage

ourselves with Til oil and Bhimseni Camphor mixture supplied by him.

Though you should get used to the oily sensation on the skin, the

experience is most invigorating and soothes body and mind. Lest the

massaging techniques he taught are forgotten, he distributed a C.D.

containing his demonstrations of Shirshasana, Pranayama and auto

massage, all rolled into one. He priced each C.D. at Rs.100/- to cover

production costs. After the massage, we made a beeline for the canteen

where we had a simple yet substantial breakfast of idlis.

The next interesting event was an erudite lecture by Prof. Rekha

Diwekar, a guest speaker on health and wellness. She is an M.Sc. in

organic chemistry and a retired professor of Sathye College. She had

camped at the temple premises since the previous night. In the course

of her lecture, she dispelled various myths regarding the undesirability

of certain so-called enemy foods like rice, ghee, jaggery, etc. and opined

that there is no need to avoid them. She discussed the various

constituents of foods, viz. proteins, fats, carbs, vitamins and minerals

and pointed out foods which contain them. She also listed out the dos

and don’ts relating to a large number of food items. She said that bakery

products like biscuits and bread are a strict no-no since they contain

trans fats. All in all, the lecture was most informative. Not only that, she

remained with us till the end of our trip, wholeheartedly participated in

all the events and answered everyone’s queries.

Mrs. Pai conducted the latter half of asanas connected with the

shatchakras in the adjoining room. The participants performed each and

every asana with unabated zeal despite all odds.

Lunch was an elaborate fare. Apart from the usual items, we were

also served jalebis and stick kulfi. It was something that tickled the palate.

After a little catnap, we assembled at the hall for Mr. Durgadas Savant’s

lecture on Naturopathy Method to treat Acute Diseases like headache,

Page 25: New `moJ-dmVm© YOGA – VARTA · 2019. 3. 2. · 2016 has been excellently translated into English by Shri Nitin Tawde (YVN's Yoga Teacher of 39th batch of YTTC). The said English

colds, fever, diarrhoea, etc. He began the lecture in his commanding

voice, advising mostly fasting, rest and some simple remedies for tackling

these diseases, and advocating avoidance of analgesics and symptom

suppressants. He stressed the fact that by staying clear of antibiotics and

other pharma drugs, one can improve one’s resistance to diseases. There

was a lot of substance in all that he said. Mrs. Veena Bhave, a teacher

from Parle Yoga Centre, devised, planned and conducted three games

with the help of one of her friends. Though hamstrung in her efforts by

want of time, she succeeded in her mission. After tea, we departed from

the temple premises at 6 p.m. and began our homeward journey. We

rounded off the revelry with antaksharis and qawwalis on our way back,

reaching the vicinity of Damle Yoga Kendra a little after 8 p.m.

Thanks to the excellent planning and execution by Mrs. Meena Pai,

the trip was a thumping success. She kept the lines of communication

open with teachers, using Whatsapp to maximum advantage, thereby

apprising everyone of all developments from time to time. She also

delegated various tasks to process owners viz. Lajwanti Gatkule, Gautam

Choksey, Mrs. Hema Phadnis, Minal Shah, Aarati Patil and Veena Bhave

along with senior teachers, all of whom pitched in wholeheartedly to

ensure the success of the trip. The highlights of the trip were: luxurious

to-and-fro bus travel, appropriate accommodation, good food and the

seamless progression of events as planned.

Participants’ Feedback aboutthis year’s Summer Yoga Course

The summer course by YVN conducted in May 2017 was one of my

best experiences in Yoga! The teachers were informative and guided us

very well in our journey of learning. Each day was different and we got

to learn a lot in a month, which many of us did not expect to. It taught

us more about our bodies, made us realise what we need to work on

and what we are capable of. I never thought I would be able to do some

of the asanas, as I did not push myself. Today I'm proud of myself that

I can do so many of the unusual asanas. This course has made me set

health goals which I plan to achieve slowly and steadily!

This year’s Yoga Summer Course was very well planned, with proper

execution by our three excellent Yoga teachers who had lots of patience

in teaching. Really liked the way of teaching, very systematic.

Thank you, Yoga Vidya Niketan.

School ke baad agar kuch achha GYAAN mila to yahaan, aur school

ke baad agar koi achhe GURU mile to yahaan.

I think this summer course was an extraordinary experience with

these extraordinary teachers. Thank you all the teachers for changing

my life by teaching me such a wonderful YOGABHYAS.

While the asanas were being practiced, trainers used to guide us

regarding the finer points of doing the asanas, etc. Each trainer brought

in their own knowledge and experience to the training programme,

which meant wealth of knowledge was given to the students. Overall, a

great learning experience for the mind, body & soul.

This is my 2nd Summer Yoga Course from Yoga Vidya Niketan. Last

year I did Yoga Summer Course in May 2016. That time my life was on

danger, I was diagnosed with Terminal Neurologia where i used to faint

at any time any place without any prior signs. I had swelling on my face,

mainly left side and it hurt me too much. I was in ICU and prescribed

operation which may have lead me to paralysis. My doctor told me not

to do any alteration in breathing and my body was not prepared for

normal movements. Last year, I came to know about YVN’s Summer

Yoga Course and my husband and family joined the class with me. They

were always surrounding me and taking utmost care that I do not exert

myself at all. For first 15 days, I was not able to carry on normal life

without support but after joining the course, within 15days I was able

to walk and come to class on my own. Breathing techniques which I

learned there I carried out only those at home for 1 year as per my

capacity thinking that my life is already very unsure at this point so if I

try these breathing techniques nothing worst can happen; so whatever

may happen will be better only if at all... Today I drive activa scooter and

leading a normal life. I did not need any operation and I am off

medication from last few months as well! Thanks to YVN. This year, I did

all the asanas as well and felt very happy and healthy too!

I was the most reluctant of joining yoga class due to my bad health

and jabardasti of life partner. Now, I would like to thank teachers of YVN

for their yogdaan. I think this is one of the best daan as it helps us to

increase our life. Yoga is not only for internal cleansing of body but also

our thoughts, lifestyle and of course, it helps to the society as a whole.

I want to persistently praise for one thing - their timely start of

prartthana and the great desire to teach. It proved life mantra for us

which will definitely increase our life span without desease and with

lively thoughts of all good things.

- Tanvi Rane (Mob. : 9820448205)

E

I recently had problem of frozen shoulder. I had been advised for

physiotherapy, as there are no such medicines on it. I heard about YVN's

summer yoga camp and hence decided to join on trial basis. Now, after

30 days of course, I found great relief in my frozen shoulder trouble.

There is more than 50 % improvement in it. Even I am able to raise my

hand above my shoulder level which was not possible earlier. Feeling

really good. Thanks to YVN and their teachers!

- Hema Marathe (Mob. : 9930699219)

E

I have attended some of the workshops of yoga, but this kind of

course is not comparable to any of the course I have attended so far.

The impressive demonstration of every yoga practice and brief

explanation of benefits associated was indeed remarkable. This Summer

Yoga Course has helped me to develop more interest in Yoga, and I am

going to make it as an important part of my life!
