A M E S S A G E F R O M T H E S T A T E D I R E C T O R

On behalf of the entire New MexicoSmall Business Development Center(NMSBDC) network, it is my pleasure to

share our 2012 Annual Report with you. Thisyear was a challenging one for all smallbusinesses however; the entrepreneurial spiritstill runs high in the state.

To overcome certain challenges, the NMSBDCjoined forces with its many partners andleveraged our resources to assist smallbusinesses and clients. In 2012, we provided12,654 hours of counseling to 4,380 clients thatresulted in the creation of 1,196 jobs, over $31million in capital formation, and 162 newbusinesses in New Mexico. The NMSBDCInternational Business Accelerator and theProcurement Technical Assistance Programcontinued to provide excellent services to ourclients in international trade and governmentcontracting with incredible results as well.

We increased our capacity in the area of international trade byseven of our Certified Business Advisors and Directors becomingCertified Export Counselors through the Certified GlobalBusiness Professional Program offered by the NationalAssociation of Small Business International Trade Educators andsponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Thiscertification requires an intense course of study and thesuccessful completion of two exams by our staff.

The U.S. Small Business Administration recognized the San JuanCollege Small Business Development Center (SJC-SBDC) withthe 2012 Service Excellence and Innovation Award. This awardwas presented to the SJC-SBDC for their superb work in servicedelivery to clients, economic development partners and smallbusiness owners in the four corners region of the State of NewMexico.

The NMSBDC was also re-accredited by the Association of SmallBusiness Development Centers (ASBDC) for another 4 years. TheASBDC uses a rigorous set of criteria fashioned out of MalcolmBaldrige national quality standards. The criterion rates theNMSBDC on process, strategy, capability, expertise, results, clientservices and many others. We are proud of this designation, as theNMSBDC is the only small business service delivery organization inthe state that is nationally accredited.

However, our greatest achievements are those of the smallbusinesses in the state that sustained or expanded their businessesand those that started small businesses this year with our help andassistance. It is clear to the entire NMSBDC staff that ourcustomers come first and that the support of the New MexicoLegislature, the U.S. Small Business Administration, the U.S.Department of Defense, our host post-secondary institutions andour economic development partners are critical to the success ofall of our clients.

In the following pages, you will find our achievements in economicimpact and the stories of just a few of our most successful clientsfrom throughout the state. Although economic challenges willcontinue in the near future, we are confident that New Mexicosmall businesses will continue to prosper and grow with assistanceprovided by the NMSBDC.

The Chispa Company, LLC manufacturesauthentic world-class Hispanic salsas andcooking sauces. Founder Ruben Parga grew up

in a household and environment where traditionalNew Mexico chile was served on a regular basis. Afterspending 14 years in the corporate world, Mr. Pargadecided to leave the company and pursue his dream ofstarting a company that offers the best tasting andhighest quality salsas and cooking sauces in the world!The Chispa Company is very proud of the fact that onlythe highest quality, registered and certified NewMexico chile (i.e., Hatch) is used in its products.

Mr. Parga gives special credit and recognition to RayGarcia of the Albuquerque SBDC for taking him underhis wing and acting as his business mentor. Mr. Pargastates, “Ray has been an invaluable resource to me andour business. His real world operational experiencehas provided focus around the fact that at the end ofthe day, it’s about creating socially responsible

Mauro Nava, a native ofMexico City, created amobile radiography

business in 2001. Then in early 2011, Mr. Nava broughtin his current partner, Olena Dzuiba, to transition hisscope of service from strictly radiography to a moreexpanded role of a complete health clinic. They

recognized the lack of quality medicalservices in Albuquerque’s South Valleyand decided to fill that void. Servicesat Clinica La Esperanza now includegynecology, ear, nose and throatspecialists, pediatrics, vaccinations,drug testing, physicals and X-rays. Bothowners are hardworking immigrantswhose goal of owning a business - andliving the American dream - has cometo fruition.

Mr. Nava and Ms. Dzuiba receivedassistance from the AlbuquerqueSouth Valley SBDC with financing andbusiness planning. Clinica LaEsperanza has created six new jobs inthe South Valley. After only ninemonths of operation, the clinic wasmaking a profit and had built a clientbase of more than 3,000 patients.Clinica La Esperanza providestreatment to an average of 25 patientsper day. � � �

Moreno, have worked as a team to build asuccessful business. In 2004, the Clovis SBDC

supported the Moreno’s as they implemented acomputerized accounting program. The family strategicallypurchased an existing glass business in 2005 and A.J. alsoacquired a glazing license in Nevada, where the companyhas done award-winning work on the Las Vegas Strip. In2006, the Morenos decided to expand their business bybecoming a government contractor.

The Moreno’s worked diligently with the Clovis SBDCto expand their business to a full construction firmand be certified as a Small Business Administration8(a) contractor in 2007. In addition, they successfullyobtained funding to double the physical location oftheir business and develop new sites. M-COREConstruction has grown from a family-owned, twoemployee operation to a business with 13 employees,several vehicles and multiple buildings. The companyhas seen an increase in work at Cannon Air Force Base.The strong foundation of the team consists of bothChris and A.J. having their GB98 withIda Jo managing accounting.“[Clovis] SBDC and PTAP are veryinstrumental in the success of ourbusiness,” says Chris Moreno. � � �

L A S C R U C E S : T H E C O D E S M I T H S , L L CThe Code Smiths, LLC was founded with the goalof providing small business owners with anopportunity to build professional websites with

all of the latest web features at a low cost. By leveraginga combined 21 years of information technology andsoftware development experience in both the privatesector and for the U.S. government, The Code Smiths,LLC have developed software that enables generalcomputer users to not only develop a website but createa custom enterprise web-application of theirown, all with no downloads and noprogramming required.

“The SBDC [at Doña Ana Community College]has been a tremendous help launching ourbusiness,” says Kevin. Wesley adds, “Ourbiggest initial concern was attracting clientswith little to no budget. The Doña Ana SBDCnot only drove our first clients to us, buthosted a series of workshops in which theseclients built their websites. Thanks to theDoña Ana SBDC we were able to see realpeople use our product and make our productnot only morerobust, but alsomore user-friendly.” � � �

You’ll frequently see a line of cars at a little whitebuilding on the north side of the Roswell Mall.Just Chillin’ Ice & Water has been dispensing

ice and Roswell’s best-tasting purified water at thatlocation since February of 2008. You will usually get achance to visit with owner Steve Green, who has afriendly rapport with his customers and loves to stopand chat while he keeps the place sparkling clean.

In 2009, Steve and his wife Cynthia wanted toexpand and worked with the Roswell SBDC toput together a business plan and loan proposal.However, the business was too new to qualityfor expansion capital. They tried again in 2012and, with the assistance of the Roswell SBDC,they were able to obtain a loan from ACCIÓN,which allowed them to purchase two additionalunits in Clovis and Portales.

Mr. Green brought modern management to thiscommodity business, utilizing the Internet andsmart phone technology to receive real timedata on equipment and sales from off site. TheGreens were successful in expanding theirbusiness due to persistence, attention to detail,adoption of technology, and great customerservice.

Horacio Garcia has been anentrepreneur in different industriessuch as household fixtures, clothing,

and furniture. Towards the end of 2011, Mr.Garcia approached the IBA with the idea ofestablishing a tequila importing company, buthe didn’t know where to start. The IBAassisted Mr. Garcia with establishing his newcompany, International Beverages, LLC. Inaddition, the IBA also assisted the newcompany in obtaining the properdocumentation to import its tequila, ElAusente, into its new Santa Teresa warehouse.

Timoteo (Teo) Martinez grew upwith a good work ethic workingon his family ranch in Wagon

Mound, NM. He explored the need for a local meatprocessing plant by talking to other ranchers in the areaand having long conversations with his father TimMartinez, who is a livestock inspector. Teo gained thesupport of his wife Latania for his plan. With bothhusband and wife on board with starting the plant, Teoasked his father to be a principal owner to formMartinez and Sons Processing, LLC.

During counseling sessions with staff at the Las VegasSBDC, the Martinez’s learned about loan programs andhow to develop a business plan that would be used to determinethe feasibility of the project and to serve as a basis for theirfinancial proposal. They completed a business plan andapproached several banks in the area before they decided to gowith Community 1st Bank in Las Vegas. The financial proposal wasalso submitted and approved by the SBA’s 504 loan program.Additional funding sources for the project included grants fromthe State’s Economic Development Department for a waterrecycling system and for training employees. The USDA RuralDevelopment Department provided funding for equipment. Aground breaking ceremony was held in April 2012 with manydignitaries and supporters in attendance.

The construction of the building is on schedule andthe grand opening is on target with a planned date ofNovember 1, 2012. The first employee to be hiredwill be Teo’s brother Travis Martinez, who will be thefacilities manager. The company estimates between50 – 60 direct and indirect jobs will be created in theagriculture industry as a result of the opening of themeat processing plant. � � �

Abel Moreno embraced hisentrepreneurial spirit offering shoeshining services as a youth. As an adult,

Mr. Moreno continued with that spirit operating aremodeling business and a janitorial service whilemaintaining a full-time job with Lea Regional MedicalHospital. He retired from the hospital and establishedMoreno’s Oilfield Service, LLC.

When he wanted to further establish and expandoperations, staff at the Hobbs SBDC worked hand inhand to assist Mr. Moreno in developing acomprehensive business plan and financialprojections. He was successful in securing thefinancing necessary for his oilfield service operation.Moreno’s Oilfield Service, LLC is now able to offervacuum truck and well testing services in addition to

greenhouse at home, just as a hobby.He and his wife Mary decided they

could build on that hobby. In 1984, they created abusiness based on growing long stem roses andselling them to local florists as well as to the areaflower shops. The business was so successful theywere able to put up four large greenhouses on theback part of their land.

In 1993, Mary left her medical career to join Mark inhis ventures. A year later, they opened a flowershop which has grown into the largest volume shopin the Carlsbad area. In 2000, they expanded intocontract work. The Walterscheids state, “Wesought help from Larry Coalson, [Director] of theSBDC in Carlsbad, to help us get the contract forthe Carlsbad Cemetery. The snack bar is now known as “J.J.’sSnack Shack.” Ms. Blea also provides cateringservices to the Cibola County Chamber ofCommerce and school entities.

Purple Adobe Lavender Farm is located in thebeautiful Chama River valley of Abiquiu, NewMexico. Owner Elizabeth Inman is dedicated

to growing organically, supporting sustainablecommunities, and using fair trade practices. Sheinvites people to “Soak up peace and serenity andreawaken your mind, body and soul to Lavender’shealing qualities.” Customers enjoy a trip to lavendercountry for farm tours, demonstrations and crafts.They can take part in specialty classes or just strollthrough the lavender fields. Knifewing Productions was established byhusband and wife team Knifewing Seguraand Beverly Newman in 1994. Knifewing

Productions consists of several companies: NativeStars Talent Agency Inc.; Downtown ConferenceCenter Inc.; and Knifewing Segura Music, aregistered record label complete with recordingstudio, a “live room” and control room. The staff ofKnifewing Productions coordinates all the

ago. The business has grown to becomepart of the fabric of Los Alamos, both as an

eating and meeting spot and as the first experiencein the working world for more than 400 high schoolstudents. The Hill Diner is where people go whenthey are craving comfort food in a family-friendlyenvironment. In the midst of the tough 2012economy, Ms. Lane expanded to establish a newrestaurant, Dixie Girl.

“Our relationship with the [Los Alamos] SBDC goesway back,” according to Ms. Lane. “We have soughtand received assistance on a variety of businessissues over the years. Dixie Girl was an idea that wasfive years in the making ….”

In 2011, Ms. Lane participated in a ‘DestinationRetail’ initiative facilitated by the SBDC inpartnership with the Los Alamos Chamber ofCommerce. Ms. Lane enthusiastically says, “Iwould have to say that the experience was lifechanging in terms of how I now think aboutpositioning my businesses.”

most of her life. She holds an associate’sdegree in Equine Studies and workedpreviously at a breeding farm and veterinaryclinic. After having spent six years working atthe local feed and supply store, she decidedthat Taos needed another feed and supplystore and she was the person to do it. Graphics Arts Station is a family owned, full-service business for anyone requiring printingor designing for business or personal needs.

The staff works to develop a relationship with eachcustomer so the product is tailored to the specificneeds of the customer. The business was started fouryears ago with one employee and now has a total of fiveemployees. Graphic Arts Station experiencedtremendous growth when it moved its facility from arural road in Belen to Main Street in Los Lunas. Walk-in

traffic multiplied, as well as the overallvolume of business, indicating location isa key element of success with this type ofbusiness. Some of the services GraphicArts Station offers are: design,advertising, signs, apparel, vehiclegraphics and wraps, printing, murals,business collateral and photo gifts.

After purchasing the business, Ms. Brewerand co-owner John Rohovec relocated theirBlue Dome Gallery to the lodge, providingoriginal artwork in each guest room. TheLodge’s eatery, Café Oso Azul, is also open tonon-guests, and its weekend brunches haveproven popular.
