New leadership in foundation The board is pleased to announce that Nicole Baril will serve as the new Executive Director of the TPHS Foundation. Nicole has been a part of the Foundation for several years as a board member at large and most recently, as VP of Development. She also served as the TP Dance Team Liaison for three years. Her prior experience with different aspects of Foundation operations has been invaluable with a seamless and smooth transition.
Nicole is proud to be a TPHS parent and she and her husband, Kevin, have two graduates (Class of 2014 & 15) and currently have a sophomore.
“I am honored to join the staff here at the
Foundation and look forward to building on our previous successes”, states Baril. “I am excited to help drive and enable our vision to “Support All Students” through academics,
sports, visual and performing arts, technology and leadership programs which make a difference on campus and beyond”.
Bobbi Karlson, former Executive Director, retired this month after 17 years of service to the Foundation.
She is looking forward to spending time with her family and rekindling her interest in painting, kayaking, and you might even see her around campus as a volunteer from time to time.
Please stop by to meet Nicole and welcome her to campus.
Grad nite 2016 is coming! Senior parents should be on the look out for the Grad Nite Packet which will hit mailboxes later this month. The committee is working hard to make the 2016 Grad Nite an unforgettable last hurrah for our graduates.
Why Grad Nite? Studies have shown that post-graduation events like this save lives by providing a fun, cool and safe alternative to other celebrations.
High school graduation is statistically one of the most dangerous nights in young peoples’ lives. Attending a chaperoned all-night celebration keeps them safer than if they were out and about with their friends.
We want ALL our TPHS grads to share in this special celebration. There will be food, games, music, entertainment, prizes and wonderful memories are made.
This is a chaperoned alcohol free and drug free event organized by the TPHS Foundation and will be held at a nearby San Diego facility.
WE WILL NEED PARENT VOLUNTEERS for this event. If you would like to help with check in or attend the event as an all-night chaperone, please contact the Foundation office at (858) 793– 3551 or email [email protected].

Annual fundraiser misses target
The proceeds from the annual TPHS Foundation fund raiser were lower than expected this year and net income came in at approximately 60 percent of the target.
Pump Up the Volume 2016 was held at the Belly Up in Solana Beach on February 27 to a smaller than anticipated crowd. The lower attendance numbers resulted in not only decreased income from ticket sales but also negatively affected proceeds from the Live Auction held at the event.
“We had an engaged and fun group of past and present parents at the event,” states Event Chair Helen Nordan, “but the lower numbers meant fewer people raising their paddles for our exciting Live Auction and many of our items sold at far below value. We also missed the mark on funds raised through the “Fund a Chromebook” portion of the evening where parents raised their paddles to fund computers for the classrooms,” continues Nordan.
Pump Up the Volume is the Foundation’s largest fund-raiser of the year and proceeds from this event are used to fund all of the Support All Students programs and projects on campus including FalconFest, PALs, Teacher Classroom Grants, AVID, the Mentor Program and classroom technology, just to name a few.
“The board and event committee will look at making an adjustment or changes to the event for next year so that the Foundation is able to continue all the important
programs on campus which make a difference in the lives of each and every student,” states Nicole Baril, Foundation Executive Director. “We will need to reevalu-ate what works and what doesn’t going forward so that we are able to better meet our fundraising targets.”
Money is still coming in from the Silent Online Auction and income from that portion of the annual fundraiser is more encouraging than from other portions of the event.
“Our auction committee was able to obtain a wide range of items for the online auction and bidding was lively, especially just near the close on Sunday evening,” affirms Nordan.
The decreased revenue from this event was unexpected as the two previous PUTV events have been overwhelmingly successful with record breaking proceeds. “We will need to determine if interest in an event of this nature has waned,” says Nordan.
It is not too late to make your tax deductible donation to the Foundation for this school year. Please see the dona-tion forms on pages 7 and 8 for information on how you can be a part of our annual fund drive or participate in the “TPHS Pathway of Pride” paver project on campus. You can also donate online through the website at www.torreypinesfoundation.org and click the Support All Students button on the right hand side.

The 5th annual SDUHSD College Night and Fair will be held on Tuesday, April 19 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds from 6:30 to 9:00 PM. This free event is sponsored by our District and serves the students of TPHS, CCA, La Costa Canyon, San Dieguito Academy, and Sunset High/North Coast Academy.
Over 200 colleges and universities from all over the nation will participate, as well as representatives from test prep, interviewing strategy, summer program and financial aid companies.
Throughout the evening there will be admission forums lead by college representatives for parents and students to learn more about the college process from insiders.
This is a great opportunity for students to gather information from a wide range of schools and programs and also meet face to face with college representatives.
Feel free to just pick up information at the tables or have your questions ready, these college representatives are anxious to meet YOU!
All information tables will be set up in O’Brien Hall and the seminars will be held in the Activity Center. Attendees should enter through the Main Gate and follow signage to the event.
If you have any questions, please contact the TPHS Counseling Department, email [email protected] or check out www.sduhsdcollegenight.com for more information. See you there, Falcons!

YELLOW RIBBON WEEK 2016 The TPHS PALS (Peer Assistance Leadership Support) program is readying campus for Yellow Ribbon Week beginning on March 21. Yellow Ribbon Week is a nationwide program which began in 1994 to raise awareness about issues involving teenage mental health, resiliency, removing barriers to getting help, and suicide prevention.
In addition to the yellow ribbons and informational post-ers which will decorate the school that week, PALS will run activities during lunch to emphasize the importance of teens asking for help and support during tough times and will also work to help remove the stigma associated with mental health issues and depression. They will let their peers know where to seek help when you need it.
There are several assemblies and speakers planned on Wednesday, March 23 and Thursday, March 24. Topics will address a number of the aspects of mental health, overcoming obstacles in life, stress and anxiety manage-ment, teenage brain health, and suicide prevention strategies. Speakers include CDR. Dr, Jeff Milligan, Di-rector and Balboa Naval Medical Center Senior Medical Officer, who will discuss “Teen Resiliency and Suicide
Prevention”; Phaidra Knight, All-American and All-World Rugby star, lawyer, speaker and business woman will discuss “Perseverance and Moving In Difficulty”; TPHS alum, travel writer, author and blogger, Jake Heilbrunn will present information on his journey “Off the Beaten Path– From Anxiety to Fullfillment”; and finally, Nuno Costa, International Crossfit Champion, triathlete, nutritionist and speaker will address his own personal experience with suicide and mental health.
Students also produced and submitted nine original 60 second PSA films to the Directing Change Statewide Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Awareness Contest. If you are interested in viewing one of the submissions, please visit https://youtu.be/hJOD-Iq-u7w .
The mission of the TPHS PALS is to promote student well being and facilitate student connectedness by sponsoring school wide events, establishing one on one student peer assistance, providing campus tours, and supporting all campus activities. The PALS program is a Support All Students funded program. For more information on the program or to find out how to get your student involved, please visit their website at http://tphspals.wix.com/falconpride.
