June Program
Our speaker will be Jane Hamilton. Jane comes to us from
Unionville, PA. Her work has been shown in Mancuso shows as
well as AQS shows and she has been published in numerous
articles and books. She is a quilt teacher, lecturer, and
pattern designer. Her patterns are printed by “Hopscotch
Quilts.” Jane’s work covers a range of methods from
traditional to unique art quilts. She will show a large
collection of quilt pieces, both old and new, to “spark your
creativity” while being shown “How” and “Why” it is important
to label your quilts. Appropriate label information, current
tools available along with many technique ideas are all covered
in this lecture. Come, hear about this important part of
completing your quilts. I am sure we will get new ideas and be
inspired! Continued on pg 2

Information about Programs and Events Please, see newsletters (linked on website) or website
for all workshop info. There is a calendar for the year
(under “EVENTS”) as well as “Workshops” organized by the
month.
At each guild meeting, please, take the time to watch
the scrolling announcements (with pictures) that is on the
front wall of the stage. You will learn about guild news,
workshops, upcoming speakers, etc.
There will also be brief reminders about meetings and
events through email a few days before our fourth Monday
guild meetings. WE WANT YOU TO BE INFORMED
ABOUT ALL OUR OPPORTUNITIES AND FUN!
Blue fabrics are the color for our June swap! Please
drop your striped squares off at the back table when
you come into the meeting and pick up last month’s swap
color which was pink! Here’s how it works. Each month
you bring 5 inch squares (no selvedge edges please!), to
swap in multiples of 5 different fabrics, pinned
together and in a plastic sandwich bag with your name
on it and the number of sets you are swapping.
Note: A great suggestion was made that it would be
great to swap 2 of each color so that you can get back a
pair of two of each fabric! Thinking about Pat Speth
when you need a pair of the same fabrics in so many of
her patterns! Great idea!
If this is what you want to do, put a note in your bag of
squares and I will make sure you get pairs back!

September: Stars October: Orange/Rust
November: Plaid

We need a big favor. We need you all to click on this link for
our HH website to check us out. Then, it would be very, very
helpful for you to go to the site each day (or a few times a day)
for a while. What we are trying to do is have many visits to the
site so that Google will put the results up on the top of the list
when a potential new member looks for a “Quilt Guild, Dover,
DE.” Once we get many hits, it will work for us. We want to be
welcoming and let the community know we are here!
Patricia Kokoszka worked hard on this site and we really thank
her for this! This site will not be static, but will keep changing.
Our news and newsletters will be linked there as well so that if

Quilting for Others will next meet on TUESDAY, JULY 12
at 5:30 pm at the VFW Hall on Main St. in Camden. We will
be continuing to work on the special project we started in
June, so we will need machines, cutting supplies, etc. We will
also have some pinning work to do, so please come even if you
do not want to bring your machine. Thanks to Fairfield
Processing, and another donation, we have quite a good supply
of king size batting, which is best cut into ninths for our
purposes, so we are concentrating on smaller quilts, not only
for kids but for ladies, and they are quick and easy to make.

Introducing Helping Hands’ Stash Relocation Event
Getting the perfect ¼” seam allowance and Why. Marti Chamberlain
We know everyone clears out their unwanted, unused and
unneeded sewing and quilting items at different times
throughout the year. And, we know no one wants to hold onto
those items once they have been removed from our workspace.
Our sewing and storage areas are valuable quilting real estate
after all!
So, this year’s guild auction, or Stash Relocation Event, will
be a little different from the traditional auction format
followed in past years.
First, the guild auction will be held this year at the Nov. guild
meeting on November 28.
Second, you can start bringing in your items for the auction
at this month’s June meeting and every month thereafter. We will store the items until Nov. for you!
Third, we plan to organize all the donated items so that they can be
viewed before the auction begins.
And finally, at the Stash Relocation Event, we will use different
auction formats to sell (relocate) the items.
There will be more details on that in the coming months.
For now, start cleaning out those quilting and sewing items that are
ripe for relocation. Bring them to the upcoming guild meetings and
stay tuned for more details on the guild’s Stash Relocation Event in
November.
We do need help planning this fun guild event. Anyone interested
in participating on the auction organizing committee, please contact
Ellen Malenfant at [email protected] or 302-492-8715. Please
direct questions, comments and suggestions to Ellen Malenfant or
Mary Dawn Ditty at [email protected] or 610-428-9579.
The Next Raffle Quilt: We have a pattern and a plan! The pattern is similar to our current Raffle Quilt. The tickets for it are selling really well,
so why mess with success! But it is created by two different blocks and it will be in patriotic colors,
so it should have a different look.
THE PATTERN: See picture on right.
THE PLAN:
The plan is to collect reds, blues, and creams/whites from guild members over the summer months
and then the committee will get back together to make the blocks and the quilt top in the fall.
So, please bring any donations of fabric to the June, July or August meeting. Fat quarters or yardage.
Any fabric not used in the raffle quilt will be used in some other way to benefit the guild.
Thanks, ML Kaczka and the Raffle Quilt Committee
I have read many articles about patchwork sewing to gather
information on how to obtain that elusive ¼” seam allowance. My
research has provided many tips and techniques to help in getting
an accurate sewn quilt patch/ block. First thing I noticed is the
majority of quilt patterns don’t suggest a “scant ¼” seam
allowance. You will find the patterns designers and magazine and
book editors all state the pattern has been designed with ¼” seam
allowance included. That means the cutting instructions for
rotary cutters and rulers have added ½” total to the outside
edges of each patch. To use their instructions you would sew ¼”
accurately. The following suggestions to make that possible are
what I have gathered from my research.
Make a test seam sewn patch; take 3 strips 2” X 6” sew them
together to get a swatch 5” X 6” using the method you are most
comfortable with. Did the swatch measure correctly after gentle
pressing? Does the middle strip finish to 1 ½’? If you have a
sewing machine for home and a different one for travel/ classes,
can you get the same results on all of your sewing machines? This
method measures the finished swatch, not the seam allowance. If
you didn’t get the desired results, here are a few more
suggestions to help.
Using a standard index file card ruled in ¼” lines, trim the
margin off and sew on the back side (not printed) to see how
accurate your gauge is. Not getting good results yet? Use the
same index card (printed side up) placed under your presser foot
and compare where the needle inserted and the edge of your
presser foot align with the card lines. Many times we rely on a manufacturer’s statement that the

Hoecker. Several guests were then introduced.
Announcements of various events were presented in a Power
Point prior to the meeting. Mary Dawn Ditty highlighted the
following:
Bonnie Hunter workshop is close to being full. It has been
opened up outside of the Guild.
Patterns for the Sue Pritt workshop need to be ordered at
the HH meeting.
Planning for the next raffle quilt will take place on June 6th.
Raffle quilt sells are going very well.
Shirley Smith’s Tree block workshop will take place June 28th
A QOV presentation is in the planning stages.
More information to follow.
Mary Dawn is looking for input from members concerning
further workshops to be offered.
The Secretary’s minutes for April were approved as read.
Presentation:
Show and Tell provided the members the opportunity to share
the wonderful projects and quilts being completed, which included
eighteen Mondo/Midi Bags.
Program:
Coming from North Carolina, Gloria Stickney presented
“Accurate Points and Intricate Pieces with Just Squares and
Strips.” She explained the method of quilting using Jodi Barrow’s
Square in a Square ruler. She shared her use of this method
through a Power Point and her many beautiful projects.
Business:
A new updated Logo, designed by Nancy Quade, was presented to
HH members. A motion was made, seconded, and carried by
majority vote to accept the Logo. Business cards and bookmarks
will be ordered to be passed out at events to promote Helping
Hands Guild.
presser foot is for ¼” patchwork. Some of these feet are made
with a metal arm placed to the left of the needle as a gauge.
With use this metal arm can become out of alignment. This arm
can also hinder the sewing on the diagonal lines marked on
patchwork squares.
To make a seam gauge you can rely on try this method promoted
by Bonnie Hunter on her Quiltville website,
http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2005/06/that-quarter-inch.html
Using a sewing ruler, not rotary cutter ruler, with easy to read ¼”
markings place it under your presser foot and aligned with the
needle, measure the bed of your sewing machine ¼” away from
your machine needle. You can make a removable gauge using
Scotch brand removable tape and an old plastic credit card.
Think of junk mail cards or expired gift cards you can cut ½” wide
to attach to the bed of your machine. If the machine of choice
has wide feed dogs (machine embroider/ decorative stitches) you
may need to cut the card out to wrap around them. However
you choose to mark your gauge, it is important to have it long
enough to get your patch aligned prior to reaching the needle.
When sewing a diagonal line on a patchwork square you may use
the edge of a standard presser foot or needle adjustment on your
machine. Use a ruler and mark the sewing line, and align your
needle to stitch just to the outside of this line, the waste side of
the patch. For squares less than 3” big, I sometimes mark a line
on the bed of my machine (narrow painter’s tape) in line with the
needle long enough to allow me to align the patch diagonally. Make
a test swatch using the pattern instructions and your method of
choice and measure after pressing, does it fit?
There are some times when you would need to start and stop ¼”
from the beginning or ending of a seam, diamond shapes for stars,
mitering borders etc. If your presser foot doesn’t have a notch
or marking, it is best to measure and mark the patch or seam
prior to sewing.
The thread you use can make a difference in your accuracy too.
Before beginning a new project make a test swatch using the
thread you intend to use, again 3 strips (2”x6”) sewn and
measured for accuracy.
Does your pattern call for multiple patches to make a certain
size block? Sewing accurately will make all your piecing fit
together. Do your star points look like they were chopped off,
check your seams, and make adjustments. If you ever
participated in a block exchange for a group of friends you can
appreciate the blocks that were sewn accurately. Many of you
have your habits and find they suit your needs. Good sewing
habits will make quilt making fun and easy. Respectfully submitted, Marti Chamberlain

King has volunteered to design a pattern using our new logo
which will be used to make name tags.
New Business:
Raffle Quilt: Our new raffle quilt will be a patriotic theme. A
meeting to work on this will be June 6th. ML presented
samples of fabrics and patterns, and will be asking for
donations. She also presented examples of runners and place
