For millions of years nature has been refining the architectureof biological structures towards a more efficient distributionand use of energy. This evolution has derived into fractalforms in almost every critical structure, for example thehuman circulatory system, mountains, trees, vegetables orclouds. Fractals are the basis of The Technology of Nature®.

Fractal Theory describes how a geometrical form can bedivided into infinite parts, each one a reduced copy of theoriginal. The mathematical principles behind fractals havebeen used in the development of innovative solutions forimage processing, the chemical industry, biotechnology andnatural resource exploitation, among others.

The continuous increase in demand for cellular services ispushing operators to enhance the coverage and capacity oftheir existing 2G networks, and the ongoing introduction of3G Systems requires new base station installations. Thesefactors will give rise to a need to deploy higher densitynetworks to achieve the expected level of quality in newgeneration mobile services.

Nowadays, governments and operators alike are sensitive tothe Public’s desire for environmentally-friendly installations. To achieve this aim, site installations should present minimumvisual impact, with small antennas that support several mobilesystems simultaneously in the same structure.

Siemens proposes the Fractal Technology as the right choicefor the development of radiating systems where multiplebands and/or reduced size play a differentiating role.

The main benefits of the use of fractal technology in antennadesign can be seen in the following product characteristics:

Fractal Technology Antenna Design Customer Benefit

Spatial Stuff Low-Size Antenna Aesthetic solutionHighly Dissimilar forms Limited Visual Impact.

Reduction in weight and wind resistance.

Self-Similarity Multiple-Band Antenna Higher Integration Performance

Genetic Algorithms Radiating Pattern adjusted Reduced interference for base station applications (blind skyline zone).

Increased Coverage (Nulfilling)

Current Concentration Simple current distribution Low weight networks Improved MTB

These benefits mean that Siemens’ value proposition for basestation radiating systems is an optimized solution that givesmaximum product performance while ensuring harmony withthe installation environment.

This New Generation of Base Station Antennas based onfractal technology was awarded in 1998 with the highestpossible recognition in the Information Society TechnologyIndustry: the European IST Grand Prize. This is organized bythe European Council of Applied Sciences, Technologies andEngineering (Euro-CASE), with the sponsorship and support of the Information Society Technologies Programme ofthe European Commission.

1.2 Siemens Fractus Strategic Alliance

New Generation Antenna Business is based on the global alliance between Siemens and Fractus for the development and commercialization of reduced-size, multiple-band andhigh-performance base station antennas for thetelecommunications infrastructure market.

Our objective is to become worldwide market leaders in the supply of integral radiating solutions for limitedenvironmental impact mobile radio infrastructures, with the implementation of the most advanced wirelesstechnologies.

Fractus’ role in this alliance is to design miniature andmultiple-band antennas for wireless applications that areeasy to integrate and, at the same time, provide highperformance. To achieve this, Fractus uses the uniquespace-filling and multi-level properties of fractals as thebackbone of its technology. Fractus has already proved thatits antennas comply with the most advanced standards formobile phones, BluetoothTM and WLAN devices, basestations and military applications.

Siemens has created an International Centre of Competence (CoC) based in Spain. This CoC, is responsible for the GlobalManagement of the New Generation Antenna Project. TheSiemens R&D team coordinates the whole developmentprocess, leads the design of value-added solutions andassures product quality and manufacturability. RadiatingSystems are produced at the Siemens Mobile factorypremises in Zaragoza. International business development is supported by the Siemens Mobile sales network.

Fractal technology allows independence between bandswithout any modification of array dimensions, thuspreserving minimum visual impact. In the market for Dual Band Antennas with 4 connectors (independence of bands for Planning flexibility), Siemens Dual BandAntennas have the smallest surface area.

These mechanical features are very important from theinstallation point of view. The low surface implies a lowwind load leading to a reduction in the mechanicaloverweight in the masts.

As antennas do not completely behave as linear transducerswith respect to the input power, the internal networks mayproduce some harmful distortion, interfering the other bandin the array. Siemens Dual Band Antennas incorporate anelectrical down-tilt which is independent in each band. Thisconfiguration achieves the maximum uniformity ofcoverage in both polarizations, thus reducing thepossibility of harmful distortions (intermodulationproducts).

Merit Factor FThe F factor takes into account the most relevantparameters that impact on BTS antenna design: verticalbeamwidth (footprint, coverage), secondary lobes in the“blind zone” (interference) and surface (visual impact and wind load).

The graph below shows the Siemens Dual Band AntennasMerit Factor results compared with the equivalent productsof the main competitors.

Notice that other manufacturers reach similar values, but two units below.

Top concerns of mobile operator.• How to acquire new sites?• How to reduce OPEX?• How to reduce CAPEX?

These problems can be solved by deploying SiemensStreetSite®. Siemens StreetSite® is an innovative integrationconcept of Node B radiating modules and low-size fractalantennas into the urban landscape for Radio Cell deployments.

It is the best solution for flexible and cost-efficient sitedeployment and provides the following advantages tooperators:

- It brings the Radio Power to where it is used.Reduces power consumption up to 20%, thanks to reducedfeeder losses.Reduces acoustic noise due to convectional cooling of RadioModules (easier acquisition of sites).

- Remote Radio Modules can be very flexibly grouped together. No rack limitations (for 1-6 sector configuration).Several radio sites can be formed and served by one Node B Server.Portable System to reduce installation costs.Flexible combinations of Macro, Micro an Pico Cells.

- Future proof technology with standard CPRI interface.- Fully compatible with the classic architecture(mix with classical One-rack solution possible).

- Integrated camouflage solution with low-size fractal antennas.
