Painful Osteoarthritis of the Knee

• 2003 Double-Blind, Randomized, Controlled Study• 90 patients, 14-week study• Randomly assigned to three treatment groups• GaAlAs diode

• Group I “A”: actual LPLT consisted of 5 minutes (3 J)• Group II “B”: actual LPLT consisted of 3 minutes (2 J)• Group III “C”: placebo laser

30 patients in each group. All patients received a total of 10 laser treatments (over 2 weeks) and 14 weeks of exercise. Follow up measures 4-8-12 weeks after last laser treatment.

Study Conclusion“We found significant improvements in patients within the two active therapy groups with respect to all of the parameters such as pain, functioning, and QoL measures, whereas there were significant improvements in patients in the placebo laser group with respect to morning stiffness, pain at movement, pain at rest, pain at flexion, and WOMAC at the end of 14 weeks. Additionally, we did not find any significant differences in placebo laser group with respect to any outcome measures except morning stiffness at week 6. This finding was one of the most important results of our study. This finding suggests that significant improvements in some outcome measures starting from week 10 in the placebo laser group may rise from the exercise therapy applied rather than the placebo laser therapy.”

Orthodontic Movement Velocity

• 2004 Randomized Study• The aim of this innovative study was to analyze the effects of 780-

nm diode laser irradiation on human canines’ retraction during an orthodontic movement with a healthy tissular response, by the measurement of the biometrical progress. A higher retraction velocity could decrease treatment time and therefore treatment costs.

• 11 patients, 2-month study• Left and right first maxillary premolars extracted and a fixed

orthodontic appliance installed to close the space created and to restore an ideal occlusion and facial esthetic.

• One half received laser treatment, the other half did not.

Study Conclusion:

“The results of this preliminary study suggest that LILTsignificantly accelerates orthodontic movement in humanswith a healthy response from periodontal tissues. Theirradiation parameters and protocol used in this study weresuccessful in decreasing treatment time. As a consequence, future perspectives of this innovation are decreased treatment costs and less discomfort for the patient. Further studies are still required to explain the mechanisms of LILT and more clinical trials are necessary to optimize treatment parameters.”
