Following the money in complex financial fraud investigations is the primary job of core forensic accountants in the Federal Bureau of Investigations. This highly trained network of professionals work in partnership with FBI agents to investigate and solve cases of fraud and theft. The Bureau has more than 500 forensic accountants in the program with nearly half of these being CPAs while others are certified fraud examiners. In the cases that the FBI and their forensic accountants work, the victims are not always large corporations.

A recent FBI investigation included a million dollar embezzlement by a long-time pastor in Tulsa, Oklahoma. A Special Agent of the FBI investigated the case with his counterpart, a forensic accountant from the FBI’s Oklahoma City Division. In this case, the forensic accountant and the FBI agent sifted through financial transactions involved over a six-year period. The pastor was ultimately charged with three counts of wire fraud and one count of filing a false tax return. Federal charges were brought because there were electronic transfers of funds routed across state lines. In fact, the pastor admitted to the misappropriation of church funds from 2007 to 2013 and failed to report approximately $400,000 to the IRS. He was sentenced to prison in January 2015.

A group of students in a high school band in Arkansas were bilked of more than $272,000. The forensic investigation uncovered the fact that the Utah-based travel agent who contracted with the high school band had spent the installments of school funds on trips for himself instead of securing the trip for the band to go to Hawaii. The same travel agent made off with funds from the band boosters of a Missouri High School to the tune of $360,000. The offending travel agent spent at least 47 days gambling in Las Vegas, personal trips to Disneyland and Samoa with the monies he stole from the students.

Financial crime is certainly not limited within the boundaries of the United States. Forensic accounting investigations are taking place on

the international front as well. For example, CNN reported in 2015 that a 28-year-old business man appears to have stolen $1 billion from Moldovan banks over the course of only three days. The “smash-and-grab” type of fraud shocked the bank so it hired a leading financial investigation

consultancy to determine what happened. As it turned out, there were multimillion-dollar loans processed through complex transactions which included a large portion of the money being transferred to offshore entities and other chunks of change being deposited into Latvian bank accounts under the names of various foreigners.

Forensic accounting is not a new career field, but the need for forensic accounting skills continues to grow exponentially — not only within the FBI and police departments but also internally within individual industries including banks, insurance companies, publically held entities and law firms. Some forensic accountants are engaged to uncover the crime and the criminal during and/or after the money has been taken from the source. Other forensic accounting professionals are hired to help deter fraud and criminal activity.

OUR EXPERIENCED AUDITORS AND SOFTWARE SPECIALISTS WILL HELP YOU HARNESS THE POWER OF DATA EXTRACTION SOFTWARE ON YOUR ENGAGEMENTS!

POWER PLAY — INCREASE AUDIT QUALITY AND EFFICIENCYToday’s audit standards all but mandate the use of data extraction software on our engagements. While some firms have chosen to purchase licenses of these software tools and have all of their users trained to use them, many firms may not have that luxury. AuditWatch’s Power Play allows your firm to outsource your data extraction needs to a qualified expert. We can help you:

• Harness the power of data extraction on your engagements• Increase quality and efficiency of your audits, specifically in

complying with AU-C Section 240 and other audit standards• Eliminate the risk of having your data extraction expertise

“walk out the door”• Minimize or eliminate expensive software purchases and

maintenance fees

Using Power Play allows your engagement team to focus on other important areas, while your data extraction procedures are being performed by our consultants and returned to you for your reporting. This process allows for maximum efficiency on both ends, all while reducing the amount of time (and money!) your staff spends on each audit area.

WHAT IS DATA EXTRACTION?Data extraction is a powerful tool that improves the quality of audit evidence with a significant reduction in cost. Data extraction gives you the power to:• Import your clients' electronic financial data• Perform automated audit tasks, such as selecting samples or

scanning populations for potential misstatements• Perform audit procedures, such as the review of journal entries

required by AU-C Section 240, that are difficult to perform manually

• Produce reports with the information you need in the format best suited for audit procedures, such as analytical procedures

• Easily analyze reports provided by your client that were earlier considered “ugly” and “unusable”

WE’LL HELP YOU UTILIZE DATA EXTRACTION SOFTWARE TO IMPROVE YOUR PROJECTS! CALL 800.775.9866 TODAY.

Power Play is a consulting service that allows you to work with our experienced auditors to perform analyses and testing of your clients’ data using specialized software. We help you design your tests, obtain electronic data from your clients, perform the analyses and send the results back to you in an easy-to-understand format. No more costly software licenses, extensive training or struggling with your clients to get information!

An Introduction to myRAs New! 2 CPE Credits | Accounting $69 or FREE with Premier or Premier Plus

Aimed at low- and middle- income Americans who do not have access to employer-sponsored retirement plans, the myRetirement plan (myRA) was introduced in January, 2014 by the President of the United States and the U.S. Treasury Department. Employers are being aggressively encouraged to offer the program. This retirement plan is not administered by employers nor do they contribute to the accounts, but they do have to process direct deposit payroll in order for their employees to participate. There are limitations and restrictions. This course introduces the legislation for the myRA and spells out the limitations and restrictions. Further, this course provides a background on why Social Security income as one’s sole retirement plan is not a good plan at all. This course concludes with step-by-step instructions on setting up a myRA account.
