    Installing and Starting KaleidaGraph

    Chapter 1

    This chapter explains how to install KaleidaGraph onto your computer and start it for the first time.

    1.1 Installing the Windows Version

    7. If KaleidaGraph v3.5 or later is already installed, a dialog will ask if you would like to have it uninstalled. If you choose to leave an earlier version of KaleidaGraph on the computer, it can always be uninstalled at a later time. It is valid to have multiple versions on the same computer.

    8. The installer will also give you the opportunity to submit your registration information. By registering the software, you will receive free technical support and upgrade information.

    9. Once all of the program files have been installed, a message is displayed to let you know the installation of KaleidaGraph is complete.

    1.2 Installing the Macintosh Version

    The installer creates a new folder on your hard disk containing the KaleidaGraph software. If you are upgrading from an earlier version, your existing KaleidaGraph files are not affected.

If the toolbar is not displayed for a particular data window, choose Data > Show Data Tools.     2.7 Splitting the Data Window

    KaleidaGraph provides two controls in the data window that can be used to split the data window into multiple panes. This allows you to view two sections of the data window simultaneously.

    To split the data window into multiple panes:

    1. Move the pointer over one of the split boxes in the data window. The split boxes are located above the vertical scroll bar and to the left of the horizontal scroll bar.

    2. Drag one of the split boxes towards the center of the scroll bar. The data window will get divided into two panes. Each pane will have its own set of scroll bars. Figure 2-7 shows an example data window that contains vertical and horizontal splits.

    2.8 Formatting Data Columns

    The Column Format dialog that was available in earlier versions of KaleidaGraph has been replaced by a Column Formatting palette. This section explains how to control the appearance of the data window, change the format of the data, and set default attributes for new data windows.

    2.8.1 Using the Column Formatting PaletteThe Column Formatting palette, shown in Figure 2-8, can be used to change many of the attributes associated with the data window, such as font, color, font size, column width, and format of the data.

    2.13 Opening and Saving Layout Files

    This section explains the difference between basic Layout files and Group Layout files, which are new for version 4. Information is provided for opening and saving both types of Layout files, as well as how to edit the plots after opening a Group Layout file.

    2.13.1 Types of Layout FilesKaleidaGraph can save two types of Layout files: basic Layout files and Group Layout files. The only difference between the two types of files is how they handle the plots within the layout window.

    A basic Layout file stores the following information: size and position of the cells, the contents and location of any text labels or objects, and the background settings.
