“ BR ING ING THE OU T S IDE IN ”

We believe that many of the best things in life are found in nature.

So, when we dreamed of the possibilities for the Surfsand Resort

and its destiny as a world class five-star destination resort, there

was no question that we would bring the outside in. We called

upon a team of experts to help us make our dream a reality.

As part of the Surfsand Resort renovation, we commissioned Cannon

Beach artist David Marshall to create a series of eight original

paintings to be displayed in each room. Marshall, who owns Modern

Villa Gallery in Cannon Beach, is known for his Dali-esque imaginative paintings. His bold use of color and

dramatic perspective are integral to his paintings. Working with the Resort’s palette of gentle water and

earth tones, Marshall has created a masterful, whimsical collection of paintings that brighten each room.

We encourage you to look closely at Marshall’s work, so that you can appreciate the subtle meaning of

each painting. In Marshall’s whimsical way, he hides a tiny hand in each painting. It might be in the form

of a sand trap in his futuristic “Banana Golf Fields,” or hidden in a field of strawberry trees in “Strawberry

Golf Fields.” In his painting “Beach Bound,” Marshall offers a delightful perspective of driving from the city

of Portland to the Coast. Skyscrapers (lined with lollipop lanterns) give way to a tiny view of the ocean,

with Haystack Rock in the distance. During your stay at the Surfsand Resort, we hope you will take a little

time to look for the hand in each piece, and enjoy the insightful paintings of local artist David Marshall.

To see more of David’s work, visit Modern Villa Gallery in downtown Cannon Beach or online at:

Emergency Response Procedures

We urge you to become familiar with the following Emergency Response Procedures and the Evacuation Map contained in this directory. It is highly unlikely that this information will become necessary during your stay; however, you are encouraged to take a few minutes to review the following procedures.

The Cannon Beach Fire District has a community warning system. In an emergency situation, you will hear a siren with a high– low pitch followed by an announcement giving information and instructions regarding the emergency at hand. This system is tested mid-day on the first Wednesday of every month. Instead of a standard siren the test is conducted with the sound of cows mooing.

DUR ING A N E A RTHQUA KE :

• Do not use elevators or attempt to run to the stairwells.

• Crawl under a table or desk and assume the following protective position:

• Curl up to make the smallest possible target.

• Cover back of head and neck with hands, cover ears with forearms and close eyes.

• Crouch away from falling items.

• If you stand in a doorway, be careful of the door closing against you, and protect your hands from door closures.

• Or, take cover in a corner of a room, free of hazards.

• Stay away from windows, mirrors, overhead fixtures, televisions and cabinets.

A F TER THE E A RTHQUA KE :

• Remain calm.

• Be prepared for aftershocks.

• Open doors carefully and watch for falling objects.

• Do not use matches or lighters.

When you evacuate your guest room, please proceed cautiously to the ground floor. Exit directly east to the nearest safe area noted on the evacuation map in this directory. Please do not re-enter the hotel or drive your vehicle. The fire department or hotel management will inform you when it’s safe to re-enter the hotel.

T SUN A M I S A FE T Y

A tsunami is a series of large sea waves usually caused by an earthquake. The waves travel quickly across the ocean, sometimes crossing the entire Pacific Ocean. As tsunamis enter shallow water near land, they increase in height and can be extremely dangerous. A tsunami is not one wave but a series of waves. It can occur any time of day or night. Experts believe that a tsunami caused by an earthquake near the Oregon Coast could strike within 5 minutes of an earthquake. If you feel an earthquake, you should immediately move inland to higher ground and a safe area. Waves generated from a tsunami may continue to come in for several hours. Please wait until local officials issue an “all clear.”

F IRE S A FE T Y

• Please note the location of the nearest exit, fire extinguisher and fire alarm on your floor.

• If you discover a fire, please stay calm. Go to the nearest fire alarm and sound the alarm.

• If you smell smoke from an undetermined origin, call the Front Desk by dialing “0” from your guest room or nearest house phone.

• Your safety comes first. If you are in doubt about the seriousness of any fire, sound the alarm and evacuate the hotel.

• Never get into a situation where the fire is between you and an exit.

• Never use the elevators in the event of a fire. Elevators may become stuck in fires, and shafts may become smoke chimneys.

• In the event of a fire, always feel the door before opening it. If the door feels hot, do not open it.

• If smoke is coming from under the door, wedge wet towels at the base of the door to prevent smoke from entering the room. Cover all air vents with towels.

• If you must pass through a smoke-filled barrier or smoke-filled room, place a wet towel or cloth over your mouth and nose, then crawl along the floor. The coolest and freshest air is closest to the floor.

• If you wish to evacuate your room, please proceed to the nearest exit sign, move cautiously to the ground floor, and exit toward the overflow parking lot across from the Lobby. Employees will be in the parking area to assist you.

• If your building has fire sprinklers, they will be automatically activated if they are over fire or extreme heat. All guest rooms have electronically operated smoke detectors.
