Also known as butterfly weed, Asclepias features orange/yellow flowers on 1-3’ tall plants from June throughout summer. The flowers are a nectar source for many butterflies and leaves are a food source for monarch butterfly larvae (caterpillars). Butterfly weed is easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils in full sun. Asclepias are drought tolerant once established and grow well in poor, dry soils. Do your part to support the butterfly population and plant some Asclepias this season. Photo Credit: Andrew Grimm

The National Garden Bureau has named 2017: The Year of the Pansy. Pansies are such a friendly-faced flower that says “hello” to the gardening season without fear of freezing or frost damage.

Choose from a rainbow of colors grown right here at Meadow View. They are great performers in containers or flower beds especially during the cool season.

Did you know the “faces” on a pansy are called a “blotch”? We also offer varieties with and without faces. A bonus is that pansies are edible and pair well with lettuces. They can also be candied and used to decorate sweets and other dishes.

2017 MVG Annual Proven PerformerTHE SUNPATIENS® FAMILY OF IMPATIENSEach year, MVG picks an annual plant that was tested and performed exceptionally well in our landscape display gardens. Our winner this year is the SunPatiens® family of impatiens; we especially love ‘Electric Orange’. This bright, robust impatiens is easy to grow and loves the sun and heat!

When kept well-watered, their compact nature provides a sunny bold statement in planters, window boxes, hanging baskets and landscape. Other desirable traits include disease resistance, continuous color spring through fall, a preference for full sun to part shade and the ability to thrive in high heat and humidity. Warmer nights really make these beauties pop!

Selecting previous MVG Proven Performer winners, such as Verbena ‘EnduraScape’ or Verbena ‘Homestead Purple’, Begonia ‘Dragon Wing Red’ or Begonia ‘Big’, Petunia ‘Purple Wave’ or Petunia ‘Vista Bubble Gum’ as well as Salvia ‘Victoria’ or Salvia ‘Black and Blue’ will ensure your garden is the best in your neighborhood!

Savvy SucculentsSucculent plants are a trend that continues to grow (literally) and just keeps getting hotter. These trendy water-wise plants are extremely easy to grow, require little maintenance, and are highly versatile. MVG grows a large selection of varieties available in an array of colors, shapes and textures that can flourish inside or out. Just give them bright indirect light and a little water.

No soil? No problem. Check out Sheryl’s creativity with these fun plants when you visit and let your imagination run wild. Succulents transform the idea of planting a container from ho hum to EXCITING! Whatever you plant them in or on becomes a living piece of art! What could be better than that? And if you go away for a weekend or forget to water them, they are still alive when you come back!

Little Gardens, Big Selection

Miniature and fairy gardening continue to be popular across generations. What better way to introduce children (or the child in you) to the exciting world of gardening than to create a pint-sized one together? All the components necessary to design your own tiny world are available at MVG! Choose from a wide assortment of annual or perennial miniature plants, dwarf conifers, fairies, fairy houses, bridges, paths, bird baths, ponds, furniture and more.

Visit us this spring and let us help you get started!

MVG Presents Growers Secret Pine Soil Conditioner

This season we are proud to introduce Growers Secret Pine Soil Conditioner to our product line. Available in 2 cubic foot bags, Growers Secret is aged pine bark fines. We experimented with this product last season and got “Earl’s stamp of approval”. Growers Secret works as an ideal soil amendment when planting new trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals.

In addition to lowering soil pH, it adds beneficial organic matter and porosity to improve your soil. It can also be used as mulch helping to maintain moisture and suppress weed growth. For success in growing in the Dayton area’s clay soils, we highly recommend using Growers Secret.

Whether you live in a fourth floor apartment, a housing complex with just a patio, or a ten acre lot, container gardens are perfect for providing fresh color and life to any area. Garden planters require little energy to create, are portable (great for finding its perfect happy spot), are long lasting, can house almost anything and can be easily refreshed. We have a great selection of pottery and all the necessary ingredients, as well as knowledgeable staff to help you create the container garden of your dreams.

SOME HOT TRENDS IN CONTAINER GARDENING ARE:• Monochromatic color groupings

of different varieties.• Mixing different colors of the

same type of plant.• Foliage plants in various

textures and colors.

• Mixing non-traditional components like succulents, herbs and even vegetables with annuals. Added value comes by including perennials which can be transplanted into the garden in fall.

MVG PROVIDES FOUR DIFFERENT OPTIONS FOR GARDENING IN CONTAINERS:Pre-made - designed and planted by our expert staff-ready to go.Custom Containers - either designed by you or MVG but planted by our staff member.Recipe Card Gardens - ready-to-assemble creations waiting for you to plant.DIY Creation Station Potting Area - an area set up for you to design and plant (purchase container or bring your own) and leave the mess with us.
