Qualifications

A LevelsStudying A Levels will give you a broad knowledge base tobe able to continue to university. Although A Levels aretraditionally an academic, theory based route, we prideourselves on our modern approach and inclusion ofpractical elements, live projects and community work.

VocationalVocational qualifications are practical courses which allowyou to gain the skills and knowledge to progress straight toindustry. If you know the career path you’d like to take, or youprefer to learn in a hands on way – this is the route for you!

There are a variety of starting points and levels available toyou, and you can also still go to university after completinga Level 3 qualification.

English and MathsIt is mandatory for all students to continue to study Englishand maths whilst working towards their main qualification.

If you have not achieved an A*-C in GCSE English andmaths your course will include either a GCSE or FunctionalSkill* in English and maths as appropriate to enable you toachieve.

Students studying at Level 3 including A Levels will also berequired to study a Core Maths qualification if they haveachieved a maths GCSE grade C.

DurationTypically 12 to 18 months but can beup to 24 for plumbing and 48 forelectrical.

WageThe wage you will earn is set by thegovernment at £2.68 per hour(October 2013), but many employerspay more.

ProgressionProgressing through the levelsavailable could lead to permanentemployment, promotion, pay rises ora place at university.

Entry RequirementsEntry is dependent on the level youare undertaking and the industry youare entering. You will need to showyou are committed, responsible,happy to work in a team, as well asusing your own initiative.

The Learning Resource CentreThe LRC provides everything needed to support yourstudies, including books, magazines, newspapers, onlineresources, cameras and more. The area offers a range ofstudy spaces, with dedicated group and silent studyrooms and access to bookable computers.

ITYou’ll have access to over 1,100 laptops and computersincluding 110 Apple Macs for use in lessons, group workand private study.

There are 25 multi-functional printers for scanning,copying and printing including remote access for you tosubmit print jobs to the College, from your owncomputer, in your own home!

Plus, we provide super-fast wi-fi so you can bring yourown devices or connect your smart phone for study andresearch.

Personal TutorYou will be allocated a Personal Tutor – a highly qualifiedand experienced staff member to guide you through yourcourse. They will be your first point of contact to help youmanage your time, develop your study skills and build yourconfidence. They will also liaise with your parents and otherstaff members to ensure you succeed at College.

The Learner VoiceThe College is committed to promoting the Learner Voice.The best way for you to have your say and be heard is tobecome a Class Representative. You can find out more fromyour Personal Tutor. You can also have your say in theStudent Union.

The Student UnionYou will automatically become a member of the union whenyou enrol. The Student Union will also provide you with adiscount at high street shops and restaurants such as NewLook and McDonalds through the purchase of an NUS ExtraCard. CAME FROM: BOURNE GRAMMAR SCHOOLNOW: SHEFFIELD HALLAM, TO STUDY ENGINEERING

Mark came to New College Stamford with aclear aim of progressing to university. In hissecond year, he volunteered in the PeerAssisted Learning Programme, helping the firstyear students to develop their understandingand knowledge. In turn, Mark's understandingof maths and physics increased at anexponential rate, and he developed a deeperunderstanding of his own subjects whichundoubtedly helped in his success.

This course aims to engage and motivatestudents to identify their individual andpersonal strengths.
