They were called together and told first to pray for help and then to go with the faith that the help would come. For the church I believe this brings up some important quesons. What does it mean for us to be sent into the world as laborers working in the harvest? What if we understood that our primary mission was not to uphold an instuon, but rather to proclaim a message? What if we focused on helping and healing those who are afflicted by sin and offer Christ as the answer to a creaon groaning under the weight of sin? We are living in a me of harvest and will do unl the return of our Savior. When the harvest is finished all will be judged. In the meanme we understand that we are sent into all the world to preach and to teach any who will listen and accept the message of forgiveness and healing in Christ. May the Lord of the harvest connue to send laborers, and may we be among those whom he sends.

CHURCH OF CHRIST

Harvest

(Matthew 9:35-10:1)

I enjoy this time of year because it begins a time of rest and reunion. The work of the spring and sum-

mer is finished – the earth has yielded its goodness and harvest is finished. While it doesn’t matter as

much to us today as it once did – harvest is a time when we can relax because we will be eating

through another winter. A successful harvest means that hunger and disease and death have been held

off for another year.

Harvest is a time of rejoicing and happiness. But there is another side as well. Harvest is a time of judg-

ment. It is also a time when the mercy of God is recognized. Harvest is a combination of those things in

our control – work, preparation, faith – and those things out of our control – weather, disease. Harvest

means that the time for working is upon us, and rest will come later after the harvest is over.

In the Bible, harvest is often used as a picture of a time of judgment. There is a harvest coming and

there will be those who are saved and those who will be judged. In our text today, Jesus is going about

the villages of Galilee preaching the gospel and healing “every disease and infirmity.” He then called his

disciples together and sent them out to do the same. He told them that the harvest was plentiful, but

there were few laborers.

I believe that they would have understood the eschatological (end time and urgent) implications of

sending them into the harvest. It was another indication that Jesus was the fulfilment of the prophe-

cies about the coming king in the Old Testament. They were called together and told first to pray for

help and then to go with the faith that the help would come.

For the church I believe this brings up some important questions. What does it mean for us to be sent

into the world as laborers working in the harvest? What if we understood that our primary mission was

not to uphold an institution, but rather to proclaim a message? What if we focused on helping and

healing those who are afflicted by sin and offer Christ as the answer to a creation groaning under the

weight of sin?

We are living in a time of harvest and will do until the return of our Savior. When the harvest is finished

all will be judged. In the meantime we understand that we are sent into all the world to preach and to

teach any who will listen and accept the message of forgiveness and healing in Christ. May the Lord of

the harvest continue to send laborers, and may we be among those whom he sends.
