Dolphin and whale communication

Dolphins and whales have voices, but they are different from most other mammals. They do not make sounds with their mouths, like human beings, but from nasal ‘airsacs’, which are just below their blowhole. Because it is difficult to see under water, sound and hearing are very important for them. In fact, whales use sound to communicate with each other over very long distances (sometimes hundreds of kilometres) by using very low frequency sounds. However, dolphins usually use higher frequencies, which means they can’t be heard over such great distances.

People believe that dolphins are one of the most intelligent animal species on the planet and this is because they have a complicated system of communication. They use lots of different sounds, including whistles and clicks, as well as body language, to communicate with each other and even with humans. Sound travels four to five times faster in the water, so it makes it one of the most important parts of

0 F Thirty-eight chimpanzees which had been kept

in cages for thirty years, showed their joy at being let out of their prisons by hugging each other and appearing to smile before taking their first steps outside. They had been in captivity since they were born.

1 The world’s largest study of weight loss has

shown that for most people, dieting does not work and may even put lives at risk. More than two-thirds put weight straight back on, raising the danger of heart attack, stroke and diabetes. In fact, many end up heavier than when they started.

2 Having a busy social life with lots of friends

may keep people slimmer than if they spend their time going to the gym, according to scientists. Socialising and meeting with friends apparently helps increase levels of ‘brown fat’ in the body which burns calories to generate heat.

3 People who love takeaways may be surprised

to learn that scientists have found that people don’t keep eating junk food just because it is tasty. They do it because they are creatures of habit and once we have associated a place with a certain kind of food, like popcorn at the cinema, we will keep eating it – even if it’s not good.

communication for sea animals. It seems that the whistles they use are

unique for each dolphin, so that they can identify each other. Young dolphins are trained to recognise their mother’s whistle as soon as they are born. Both whales and dolphins use clicks to help them locate objects under the water and this is called ‘echolocation’. For example, when they are looking for food, the clicks get faster the nearer they get to the object.

Dolphins often communicate with humans by using their bodies. They can jump out of the water and then fall back into it with a splash or they can splash the water with their tails. However, they also use these methods to communicate with each other. It has also been discovered that dolphins can understand the language patterns that humans use in the same way that animals like parrots do. Sometimes dolphins can copy the different human sounds they hear, such as boat engines or laughter.

Sound travels four to five times faster in the water, so it makes it one of the most important parts of communication for sea animals.

It seems that the whistles they use are unique for each dolphin, so that they can identify each other.

C Oceana is the largest international organisation focused only on ocean conservation, protecting sea ecosystems and endangered species. Offices around the world work together to help our oceans to return to their natural state.

D The Climate Project was founded by American, Al Gore, and includes specially trained climate experts who want to educate people about the dangers of climate change. It has offices in more than fifty countries. They present a slide show featured in the Oscar-winning film, An Inconvenient Truth.

E WWF is best known as the world’s most important nature organisation which focuses on how wildlife, the environment and human activity are all connected. It is passionate about protecting the natural world and knows that it also needs to take other action, for example, educating people about climate change and helping them to change the way they live to help protect the environment.

F Frontier, started in 1989, protects biodiversity and ecosystems and at the same time creates jobs for some of the poorest communities. Their first projects were in Tanzania, one of the world’s poorest countries, where they did research in remote forest, savannah, and marine environments.

people with physical disabilities, amputee athletes, people with cerebral palsy, people with spinal cord injuries, and ‘others’, that is, athletes with a physical disability that is not included in these six categories.

The Paralympic Summer Games have grown a lot 4 1960. When the Beijing Paralympics took 5 in 2008, there were 4,200 athletes competing in the Games, with people from 148 countries. In addition to the increased participation, 6 have been a number of other changes to the Paralympic Games. However, there are also disadvantages. For example, if it rains, he has problems as he can slip easily, and it can be difficult keeping his balance when he runs fast round corners. warming, fossil fuels are running out and many animals have become extinct or are nearly extinct.

The biggest problem facing the plant at the moment is climate change and global warming because there will be more floods and droughts.

history tomorrow and then I can relax. I can’t wait. We aren’t going to Spain this year, because the friends we usually stay with have moved to Italy so we’re going camping in Italy instead. I’m getting my mountain bike when I get back from holiday, so I’ll bring it with me when I come to see you. By the way, can we go swimming in the lake while I’m there?

Must go now. Have got to do some more revision for tomorrow’s exam. Write soon. Josh13 [Sample answer] I listen to the radio every morning before school and sometimes in the

evenings. I’d like to hear about new independent bands and sporting events for young people on the new programme. A good time to broadcast the programme would be at about eight o’clock in the evening.

Writing12 [Sample answer] I was standing outside McDonalds at about eight o’clock last night,

when I saw a man steal a lady’s handbag. She was waiting at the bus stop and the man bumped into her as he was walking past and grabbed the bag. He was wearing dark clothes and a hoodie, but I noticed that he was wearing red and white trainers. He was probably between twenty and twenty five years old, but I couldn’t be sure. I chased him and he dropped the bag which I was able to return to the lady who was very happy. However she was in shock so she was taken to hospital.

At home each person can help the planet by using energy-saving light bulbs and recycling everything they can. And you should all stop using plastic bags.

Next week, a member of Greenpeace is coming to the school to talk about the projects they are supporting to save the planet. Please come.

met on the first day of junior school when we were five years old because we sat next to each other in the class. At first we didn’t like each other, but we soon started talking. Today she’s very tall, with long blonde hair and she’s very slim too. In fact, she could be a model! She loves wearing very fashionable clothes – sometimes mini skirts and T-shirts and sometimes very tight jeans with knee-length boots. She’s always going shopping or making her clothes herself. She’s great fun to be with as she’s always happy and very funny.
