The traditional African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child” has possibly never been more relevant in today’s high-tech, constantly wired, instant information world. Our students are faced with a myriad of

both challenges and opportunities, and without the oversight of their ‘village’, navigating this period of their lives may feel overwhelming.

We are blessed at Cornerstone to have wonderful parental support, strong community partners and a true village approach. We understand the enormous benefits for our students when we work together, look out for each other and share the difficult conversations. As planning begins for the final term of 2015, we intentionally include many significant events and rituals to strengthen our village connections. Our annual Food & Fun Fest is being held on Friday 30 October where we invite our local community to connect socially and build even stronger ties. “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.” 1 Corinthians 9:24

As the end of Term 3 approaches we begin gearing up for our annual ‘Summit to School’, where students will either walk, run or cycle from the top of Mount Barker Summit back to the College campus. It is a yearly tradition and a fantastic way to mark the end of a very long school term. However, eleven kilometres is not a short little sprint and most everyone will tell you that the hardest part is the final hill that you have to climb to get to the finish line. After eleven kilometres the last thing you want to end on is a nice steep incline.

The last few weeks of this term have felt a little like a final climb to the finish line. It has been a long term and the last ten days especially have seemed, for many people, to have been some of the hardest days we have had all year, staff and students alike. This last week is where you find yourself having to dig deeper than you have before and finish the extra assignment, write the last report, or study for one more test, even though you feel as if you have nothing left to give.

Racing, like life, must have a goal in mind. There has to be some sort of prize or reward that motivates us to finish and give 110 per cent up that last hill. What I have observed is that the people with the clearest goal in mind reach their destination in the best style. So, what have you been running for this term? Was it simply to get by; to do the minimum amount of work possible, or have you been putting in the extra effort even as everything got harder?

In Paul’s mind, life itself is a race and we have to know why we are running so that we can run in a way that we can be proud of. In his

Term 4 Summer UniformAs Term 4 gets closer, now is a good time to ensure you have your summer uniform. All items available from The Uniform Shop,

The Homemaker Centre, 6 Dutton Road, Mount Barker, phone: 8398 3983. Year 7 students remain in their regular sports uniform throughout the year.

Students wearing their uniform correctly and neatly shows a certain commitment to our community and promotes a sense of belonging. Here are some focus areas to be aware of for Term 4:• All students must wear a College hat for

outdoor PE lessons and at recess and lunch breaks

• Hair shoulder length or longer is to be tied back

• Dresses are to be worn ‘on the knee’• Students are to be clean-shaven• A maximum of one earring, as below, in

the lower lobe of each ear- plain silver or gold stud (max. 6mm

diameter)- plain silver or gold sleeper (max. 12mm

diameter)- clear diamante (max. 6mm diameter)- white pearl (max. 6mm diameter)

Please note that facial piercings are not acceptable. Students considering such during the holidays should refrain, as there will be insufficient time for them to heal and be removed before the new term begins.

Comprehensive details of uniform expectations can be found in the Student Diary on pages 16-23 or click here.

understanding the greatest prize is something far more valuable than an ATAR score or a good report. For Paul, the knowledge that he is loved by God and that he has been faithful to what God has entrusted him with is the greatest motivation and the only real reason to be running the race in the first place.

So, what are you running for?

God bless.

SATAC ApplicationsWith University Applications for 2016 closing this Wednesday, 30 September, it is important to remind all students and families that the application fee

must also be paid, otherwise the application will not be considered. For students who did not apply and now wish they had – yes you can still apply but a late fee will be imposed after 30 September. This is an additional cost of $110 on top of the $28 processing fee. It is possible to apply for most courses except Medicine/Surgery and Oral Health. Some Creative Arts courses at Flinders University have other conditions so please follow this up if a late application is made.

Applications to TafeSA opened on Monday 14 September and close on 30 November. It should be noted that many courses at TafeSA are very competitive. It is important to submit extra supporting information if possible. For some students that may be evidence of VET learning. Students in Year 12 should also consider if Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses may provide practical alternate pathways to University courses where the ATAR may not be reached.

Each of the universities offer Foundation Studies programs to assist student transition to university.

The South Australian Institute of Business and Technology also provide general Foundation transition programs as well as specific course links to Technology and Business.

VET 2016All VET applications should be processed by the end of this week for Adelaide Hills (AHSPs) programs. Invitations to interviews

should be sent late in the holidays or very early next term. Please remember entry into some programs is not automatic and when not successful, students will be required to fit back into normal subject options. Some of these options may be restricted if subject numbers are already at maximum. Please contact Mr Anthony Doyle for further information:[email protected] or 8398 6019.

important information

Checking SACE PINSIt is highly recommended that Year 12 students establish their PIN for the SACE website well before results are released in December.

Sometimes students have done this in Year 10 or 11 and have forgotten the PIN they created.

Please visit the SACE website by clicking here to read how to get your PIN updated.

SACE Board are expecting to release Year 12 results on Tuesday 15 December this year.

Year 12 Exams and Special ProvisionsIf students fall ill just before or on the day of a Year 12 exam, or experience a family crisis, bereavement or other significant and difficult situation during exams, students can apply for Special Provisions.

Click here for the SACE documentation which provides families with information on how Special Provision works and what needs to be done. Please contact Ms Michelle Richards (Senior School Learning Leader), Mr Mike Litchfield (SACE Coordinator) or myself if your child has any issues during the coming exam period. We will meet with you and assist with the application process. Note that formal application to the SACE Board is only required for final examinations or for any impact on the external assessment of other subjects.

For ongoing illness or circumstances that impact final lessons and final school-based assessments, Special Provisions are decided by the subject teacher concerned in consultation with the relevant leaders. It is highly recommended that students get a Doctor’s Certificate for any illness of more than one day during this final period of assessments.

If a student is ill, and will possibly miss an exam, please contact the school as soon as possible before the day or as early as possible on the exam morning. Absence from any exams due to illness will require a Doctor’s Certificate for that day as part of the paperwork that needs to be completed and submitted to the SACE Board. Note that SACE Board exams cannot be done at an alternative time or date.

Middle School House Leaders 2016In a College first, the new Middle School House Leaders were announced to staff and students via a live streamed devotion to all Home Groups on Thursday 10 September.

College Chaplain Mr Adam Yeager announced the names of the successful applicants for 2016. He congratulated them and encouraged them to do the College proud when they start their roles in Term 4.

The process of applying for leadership at Cornerstone is a rigorous one. It involves a written application, presentation to the student body, voting and interview. All of the information gathered is carefully considered by a panel consisting of a staff House Leader, a Middle School Home Group Teacher and a current Middle School House Leader.

We were blessed this year to have a large contingent of applicants each of whom could bring varied gifts and talents and each clearly demonstrated a real desire to serve their House and the College. It was a very difficult decision to choose the four successful students for each House. I wish them well in their new roles and look forward to working with them and helping develop their leadership skills as they serve.

Acts 20:35 It’s more blessed to give than to receive.

Congratulations to the successful applicants.

Thank you to everyone involved in the selection of the Middle School House Leaders. I would also like to thank the 16 retiring Middle School House Leaders who worked hard for their respective Houses throughout the year and who displayed excellent servant

leadership in the many responsibilities they undertook during the year.

Senior Music AssessmentsOn Tuesday 15 September, the senior music students of Cornerstone College presented a public performance for their SACE performance assessments. The Year 11 students began the night with four unique ensembles playing a variety of music including classic rock, pop, heavy metal and film music. This performance was a culmination of a term-long project which focused on students selecting pieces, arranging music and running rehearsals.

The Year 12 Solo Performance students then took to the stage and presented their SACE moderation material. Pianist Jayde Babi, flautist Sarah Powell and vocalists Eunice Cubio and Bronte-Ellen Jones showcased their talents to an audience of family, friends and fellow music students.

Syrian Refugee CrisisMany of you have been made aware through the media of a major humanitarian crisis occurring in the country of Syria which has caused millions of people to flee the country.

This conflict according to some sources has so far claimed 220,000 lives, left one million people injured and rendered 12.2 million people inside Syria in need of humanitarian assistance. Of those, more than 5.6 million are children.

After almost five devastating years of fighting, there is still no end in sight to the crisis.

The Syrian refugee crisis is the worst this century.

Cornerstone College has decided to not only raise awareness of this crisis within the school community but also enable students, staff and parents to make a monetary contribution to help those involved in helping the Syrian refugees. Friday this week every student and staff member has the opportunity to give a gold coin donation or more to help with the crisis. If you or your family would like to give a donation you can place it in an envelope and give it to you son or daughter to give to Student Reception this Friday.

All money raised on Friday will be given to Australian Lutheran World Service who will use the money for Syrian refugees seeking safety in Jordan by providing them with food, hygiene kits, blankets, shelter, gas heaters and bottles and school kits for the children. Any donation will be gratefully accepted.

Thank you for supporting Cornerstone to help the Syrian refugees in their time of need.

Cessation of EnrolmentShould there be a reason why you are not continuing your child’s enrolment in 2016 at Cornerstone, the College requires a term’s notice in advance.

It would be appreciated if you could contact Helen Charles via email on [email protected] or phone 8398 6009 at your earliest convenience if this is the case, and no later than the end of Term 3.

If it is a possibility, and you are still to make a final decision that your child is leaving, then it would be advisable to still inform Helen.

Music Cabaret 2015The Sound of Music - The Hills are AliveOn Friday 11 September, Cornerstone College presented their annual Music Cabaret to a full house in inbarendi. Each of the Cornerstone music ensembles presented items incorporating the music theatre theme and the Year 12 soloists entertained audiences with their amazing talents.

The Adelaide Hills were alive with the sound of music as the audience joined special guests, the Von Trapp family singers in a classic rendition of “Do-re-mi” to finish the night.

Congratulations to all of the student performers and a huge thank you to all the staff and students who made “The Sound of Music” possible.
