Welcome back to all families for Term 3. Something I look forward to each term, is the privilege to lead the first Whole College Chapel. It provides me with the opportunity to set the scene for the term

ahead and reemphasise what underpins who we are at Cornerstone.

In last week’s Chapel, I shared aspects of my holidays and some passions I pursue when I have the time; gardening, reading, golf and cryptic crosswords being some examples. I also spoke about how when doing crossword puzzles, you can discover new and interesting words, with one such word being mondegreen. A mondegreen is a word or phrase resulting from a misinterpretation of a word or phrase that has been heard. One classic example comes from the line at the end of each verse of “Bad Moon Rising” by Creedence Clearwater Revival., where “There’s a bad moon on the rise” is misunderstood to be “There’s a bathroom on the right.”

Words are powerful reflections of purpose and visions of intent. As such, it is important to ensure we say what we mean and mean what we say, with our actions speaking as loud (and clear) as our words. This ensures that there can be little room for misunderstanding or misinterpretation. We continue to express and stress, and I am confident the students, staff and families are clear about, what this means in respect to the learning and relationships at Cornerstone College.

Underpinning all we do at Cornerstone is sharing the gospel message of grace, love and forgiveness and the freedom that comes from this wonderful gift.

YEAR TWELVE FORMAL

In Term 2 Cornerstone College hosted two seminar students, Jake Zabel and Joseph Graham, from Australian Lutheran College currently studying to become Pastors in the

Lutheran Church of Australia. After their week long placement we asked them to reflect on their time at Cornerstone and the ministry they witnessed:

This week we, seminarians Jake and Joseph, have been visiting Cornerstone College to learn about how a Lutheran High School runs and what a Pastor does here. We’ve enjoyed our time here visiting different Christian Living classes, Vetamorphus and seeing the Christian side of the campus.

It’s been interesting to come and see how a South Australian private school runs, as we both did high school in public schools in Queensland; there are a surprising number of differences, for instance the proliferation of laptops. There also is a difference in the school’s attitude towards not only Christianity but religions in general. The schools we attended had more anti-religious, anti-Christian sentiments. But the environment at Cornerstone is more welcoming of religious opinions, and is not afraid to bear witness to the Christian faith but is very open about its Christian heritage and beliefs.

The Christian Living course was fascinating to learn about, the different focuses in the year levels, the openness of discussion and the drive to get the students to question themselves on why they believe what they believe. Throughout our week at Cornerstone we have attended these classes for all the different year levels, and have enjoyed seeing how Christian Living is taught among the different year levels. The highlight of our week was when we had the opportunity to ask and answer some questions in a Year 12

CL lesson. The students were free to ask any questions concerning Christianity and religion. It was a great experience to find out what the students thoughts were on matters of faith and the world.

Vetamorphus was also an enjoyable experience. We attended two sessions and got to learn more about this worthwhile program. The discussions and presentations were on some rather difficult and controversial subjects but we were impressed by how well the students handled the topics. Their presentations demonstrated the amount of research that they put into the topics and we were impressed to see how well the students handled these topics with care and respect.We were interested in seeing the intricacies of the ministry side of the school. It is different to anywhere we have witnessed before. The way in which the Pastor and the other ministry staff worked together in the life of the school was intriguing to see. It is the most well organised and advanced ministry team we have come across.

Thank you for having us, it was a good learning experience, we really enjoyed our time at Cornerstone.

Changes to school bus 881 services From Monday 1 June, the 881 school bus will depart seven minutes earlier and will be re-routed. The new departure time will be 8.01am and the bus will now travel Druids Rd, Adelaide Rd, Dumas St, Adelaide Rd and Wellington Rd to Waldorf School arriving at Waldorf School at 8.45am. The 881 school bus will no longer service Hutchinson Street Mt Barker.

Students who previously transferred from the 864 to the 881 school bus at stop 62 or stop 64 will now be required to transfer at Dumas St Park ‘n’ Ride Interchange

Cessation of EnrolmentShould there be a reason why you are not continuing your child’s enrolment in 2016 at Cornerstone, the College requires a term’s notice in advance.

It would be appreciated if you could contact Helen Charles via email on hcharles@cornerstone.sa.edu.au or phone 8398 6009 at your earliest convenience if this is the case, and no later than the end of Term 3.

If it is a possibility, and you are still to make a final decision that your child is leaving, then it would be advisable to still inform Helen.

SACE PINs for Senior StudentsAll Year 10, 11 and 12 students can access their SACE information, subject enrolments and results on the SACE website with a personalised PIN number. Click here to view a document that will assist students with the setup. Students will need their SACE number. This is a six-digit number with a letter attached (for example: 123456X).

All Year 11 and 12 students have received SACE results sheets each semester over their time of study showing their results. These blue SACE documents have the SACE number on them. If a student can’t find their number it can be provided by Mrs Kubenk (Curriculum Support Officer), Mrs Sampson, Ms Richards or Mr Litchfield.

Year 12 students who have completed their Research Project will be able to access their official SACE result on Monday 3 August. Year 12 students are encouraged to check their PIN and online access before then so they can access their RP result quickly on this date.

Student LeadershipCollege Leaders at Cornerstone demonstrate the Christian values that form the foundation of the College and have a significant influence in creating opportunities for others. Service is core to all we do, and leaders at Cornerstone are required to actively contribute to the benefit of all. Student leadership also involves presenting a positive example to the student body in regard to behaviour, uniform and punctuality, and encouraging others to do the same.

College Leaders (Year 12, 2016 only)The application process has begun for College Leaders; positions that commence at the start of Term 4. Six College Leaders form a team that is made up with at least one student from each of the four houses. Their role includes representing the College and creating opportunities to link the Middle and Senior Schools. Information packs are available for current Year 11s from Senior School Student Reception, with applications due on Monday 3 August.

House LeadersEach House has four Middle School and four Senior School House Leaders (16 for Middle School, 16 for Senior School). New Canteen Online OrderingWe have a great new online ordering system for the Canteen called FlexiSchools. This system allows parents, students and staff to place orders from home, work or school. The payment is also done online, so less paper bags, cash and envelopes are sent via the student to school. FlexiSchools is well established and tested, operating in hundreds of schools across Australia.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to www.flexischools.com.au and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately.

There are a variety of payment options supported, including Visa, Mastercard (credit and debit) and Bank Transfer. The system operates via a pre-paid account.

The procedure of ordering lunch at either Student Reception or in the Canteen will cease at the end of Week 2. All lunch and recess orders will only be accepted online through www.flexischools.com.au from Week 3.

You can still come through and purchase as normal but I recommend ordering to avoid disappointment.

Careers ExpoTuesday this week, we had a wonderful evening with our Careers Expo in inbarendi. With over 50 exhibitors and parents and students from all across the Adelaide Hills, it was a very well attended night. Students and parents are encouraged to pass on any feedback they had on the evening so that the Careers Team can continue to build and improve upon the event for our community.In addition to this night, we will also be providing a thorough SATAC application information session to all Year 12 students next Monday.

VET 2016Over the coming weeks, parents and students who are interested in participating in a VET course in 2016 are encouraged to meet with Mr Anthony Doyle to discuss the positives and negatives of these courses and how they

can combine this with their schooling. These discussions are extremely valuable to have prior to making subject choices and as they can often take longer than 15 minutes, are not possible during the subject selection interviews in Week 5.

Cyber SafetyIn this world of enhanced technology our children have ready access to online media and the ability to communicate freely and easily with others. Shadowing this amazing ability to communicate is an increasing prevalence of Bullying through media - Cyberbullying.

The Australian Government has recently formed a new Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner, and has launched the Cyberbullying Complaints Scheme. The scheme is aimed at supporting families and schools in dealing with issues of cyberbullying, and is committed to working with social media services in this process.

I would like to alert you to a range of resources pertinent to children and their families on the Office’s website. Please click on the website link below to check out information about dealing with cyberbullying, processes for blocking unwanted online interaction, and having online content reported and/or removed. Included on the website are short videos, parent presenters and helpful links to FAQs.

Lutheran Schools Association In early June, the Lutheran Education Adelaide Hills (LEAH) community, local Lutheran congregations and the public were invited to attend one of three community forums, providing the opportunity to share thoughts and ideas as to what could be provisioned for on the gifted land at Aston Hills. The meetings were held at Mount Barker, Hahndorf and Lobethal, and collectively, 65 people attended with a good cross section of the community represented.

The forums commenced with a twenty minute presentation on the projected growth of the District, the history of the donated land and some interesting statistics around the three areas that the Working Group were seeking feedback, those elements being education, ministry and shared use opportunities.

After a brief question time the opportunity was given for the community to share their thoughts and ideas. The community input has been well received and will be invaluable in helping shape and influence the future of LEAH. The Working Group will now test the opportunities available, as they work towards preparing a proposal that will help meet the future educational, ministry and community facility needs of greater Mount Barker and the Adelaide Hills.

It is an exciting time for LEAH and this sentiment was reiterated by those who attended the forums. Having the opportunity to step back, reassess and consider the best possible models and solutions for Lutheran Education and Ministry in the Hills has been both refreshing and inspiring.

The Working Group look forward with much anticipation to considering the possibilities and would ask you to partner with them in seeking God’s guidance and direction through prayer.

Windows 10 As you may be aware, the latest Microsoft operating system: Windows 10, will be released to the public on 29 July.

At this stage, Windows 10 has not been fully tested for compatibility with all of the current devices and software that students use, so we highly recommend that you DO NOT update your child’s device until further testing has been completed. We will let you know as soon as this testing is complete and will inform you how to best go about starting your free update. The update will continue to be free until 29 July 2016 for anyone with a genuine copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

If you have previously reserved a copy of Windows 10, it will automatically begin the download once available. So to stop the automatic update, please follow the steps provided here.

SA Architecture Awards At the 2015 SA Architecture Awards the College’s Architect, Peter Moeck took home two commendations for his outstanding work on the Middle Years Learning Centre - Paideia.

Peter has worked with Cornerstone College for 20 years and has been instrumental in the design and delivery of inbarendi, Anakalypsi, Atelier and Paideia. Blessed with an incredible gift and passion for his craft, Peter has significantly influenced the amazing learning environment we have at Cornerstone.

Peter’s passion for education is further evidenced in his current position as President of the South Australian Chapter of the Council of Educational Facility Planners International. A worldwide organisation that shares knowledge, experiences and best practice in the planning, designing and building of great learning environments.

The commendations received by Peter were for the category of Educational Architecture and Steel Architecture. The judge’s citation read:“Paideia” is a well resolved, thoughtful response to the brief. The building delivers targeted middle years accommodation that responds effectively to the campus master plan and enhances the campus entry. Internally, the building provides a flexible, open learning environment that caters for varied teaching methodology and student groupings as well as community activities. This flexibility is supported by connection to a series of external informal learning and recreation spaces, and views are maximised and detailing is well resolved. The commitment of the architects in delivering an excellent outcome for the school is clear in the finished project, with students and staff embracing the opportunities that the building provides.

Royal Adelaide ShowThe Royal Show starts on Friday 4 September. We request that families arrange for their children to attend the Show at times that do not impact on their attendance at school and their learning. There is no student free day this year on the first day of the show.

Parent WorkshopsUnsure how to help your student with their career decision making? Free of chargeWe are committed to consistently offering our parent community meaningful support, tips and advice. Our Careers Counsellor, Virginia Gare, will again be running workshops for parents on helping your child make their future career choices.

Participating in a Parents as Career Transition Support (PACTS) workshop will help you support your child with their career decision-making. Research tells us that parents want to help their children with career decisions, but only 20% of parents feel they have sufficient knowledge to do this.

The workshops are available to parents of all year levels, although they will be most relevant to those with children in Year 10-12. The next workshop will be held in the evening of Wednesday 19 August in Anakalypsi (Library) at 6.45pm for a 7.00pm start, finishing at 9.00pm.

China Day 2015On Friday 24 July, students and staff at Cornerstone celebrated China Day. It was our annual Chinese cultural event to promote Chinese language and culture, and was also a fundraising activity. Our sister school, Beijing Haidian Foreign Language Shiyan School, has been offering scholarships for underprivileged children in rural China to receive an education. As Haidian’s sister school, we are in partnership with them in this venture and love to show our support.

On China Day, Cornerstone students wore something red or something Chinese and made a donation. Students were also able to purchase Chinese fried rice and noodles, spring rolls and prawn crackers along with various Chinese souvenirs. There were many activities such as Martial Arts demonstration, table tennis and badminton competitions, calligraphy, chopstick races and of course the Panda and Tigress mascot costumes brought so much fun for us! The College was filled with a jubilant atmosphere on this special day.

Middle School ChineseAt the end of Term Two, middle school students studying Chinese did a research project on the sites that the Cornerstone China trip group will visit as part of their tour to our sister school next year. Students made models or tourist brochures on the attraction they researched.

They came up with some very creative models, using materials such as, foam, lego, wood, cardboard and cake, etc. Students really enjoyed the opportunity to express their creativity in a way that linked in with their Chinese language and cultural studies. Our Chinese Haidian exchange students from China thoroughly enjoyed seeing models representing landmarks in their home country!

Year 10 Knockout NetballThe second round of the Year 10 Knockout Netball was played on Thursday 23 July against Concordia College. The girls played an incredibly disciplined and smart game, with the momentum swinging continuously throughout the four quarters.

Nicole Smart and Olivia Hughes were on fire, shooting accurately from anywhere in the circle. Charlie Weeks, Chloe Schaefer and Niamh Montague worked tirelessly in the midcourt and gave 100% the entire game. The defensive line up, made up of Lucy Schumacher, Sophie Rhodes and Sintra Cowlam was incredibly strong. The girls had a huge number of intercepts and read the play very well. Unfortunately, we couldn’t quite keep up with Concordia who ran away with the game in the last quarter. The final score was 34-45.

Thank you also to Lily Fox, Alicia Barron and Hannah Gast for their support, and to Georgina Hollsten for umpiring and keeping us entertained on the bus!

Year 7 Knockout NetballSaint Francis vs Cornerstone CollegeThe game was a tight contest from the starters whistle till the final siren. At quarter time Cornerstone lead by one goal which did not change in the second quarter. Cornerstone increased their lead at three quarter time by another goal leading 17-15.

Both teams fought hard, defended relentlessly and attacked the ball aggressively. Great teamwork was shown and it was positive to see the girls encouraging each other throughout the match. The final quarter was a real nail biter with both teams making errors due to pressure. The final score was 22-20 with Cornerstone coming out on top. Well done to all players, umpires and supporters. It was a great match!

Knockout Football ReportOver the course of Term 2, 23 boys from years 8 and 9 have been representing Cornerstone College in the State Knockout Football competition.

Our first round was held at Birdwood Oval against Mount Barker High School and Birdwood High School. The boys were confident we could get the job done and to their credit ran out large victors in both games.

Year 10 Boys Knockout SoccerOn a cold Monday (Term 2), Cornerstone played host to Heathfield and Brighton High schools.

Our first game against Heathfield produced an all-round solid performance, resulting in a very comfortable 6-0 win.

In our second game we needed only a draw against the highly rated Brighton team after their 7-2 victory over Heathfield.

We got off to a great start, passing well and defending strongly, however two quick goals from the visitors late in the first half saw us go into the break rattled and needing something special.

An early second half Brighton goal made our task look even more unlikely until our perseverance was rewarded with a goal ten minutes from time. Brighton looked tired, another Cornerstone goal and with a minute to go the score was 2-3. In the dying seconds a marauding run from our star central defender Cai Rees looked like it might end in the crucial goal, however it was not to be and an entertaining match was brought to an end, with Brighton going through to the next round.

Congratulations to the boys who were a credit to the College in the way they played and conducted themselves.

Year 8/9 Girls Knockout SoccerThe Cornerstone 8/9 Girls Soccer team ventured to St Francis on Tuesday 16 June and played two games against St Francis and Heathfield. The girls played very well in both games earning a 2-2 draw against St Francis and 3-3 draw against Heathfield. Unfortunately the game after us was won by St Francis which meant we did not go through to the next round.

I was extremely impressed by the girl’s endeavour, support and positive approach. Everyone contributed, even if they were slightly unfamiliar with their positions. Well done girls! Maybe next year.

Year 10 Girls Knockout VolleyballOn Thursday 11 June, the Year 10 Girls Knockout Volleyball team went to the Mars Sports Complex to compete in a round-robin competition.

The first game was against Mount Barker Waldorf - this was a challenging game, but the Cornerstone girls gained skills as the game progressed even though we lost 3-0. The second game was against Glossop and the team played very well, winning 4-0.

The final game in the round-robin was against Renmark which was the team to beat - we won the first set, but unfortunately lost the next two sets. The fourth game was a final and we played off for 3 v 4 against Glossop again – we had a good win, 3-0.

The girls in the team were: Alicia Barron, Jessica Billing, Georgina Doddridge, Rosie Higginson, Georgia Lamshed, Alex Mackay, Niamh Montague, Lucy Schumacher, Tahnee Sickerdick and Nicole Smart.

We had an awesome day and improved our volleyball skills throughout the four games. We would like to thank Miss Weiss for coaching and encouraging us.

Year 10 Boys Knockout VolleyballOn 11 June, eight fine looking athletes and Mr Lenger travelled to the Marden Sporting Complex where they were to compete in the knockout volleyball competition.

The boys played their first game against Blackfriars, winning 2 sets to 1. The team fought hard as they lost the first set but then managed to lift their heads and push through to a 2-1 win.

Renmark High were the next team to be played in the competition. They were a lot taller and stronger than the Blackfriars team. Once again we lost the first set but fighting hard managed to bring it back and win the game 3 sets to 1.

Then we were up against a team who hadn’t won a game all day, Glossop High School. The first five minutes was played to a low standard but this was eventually overcome by some great serving by the team. This lead to a whitewash Cornerstone’s way, 4 sets to 0.

Now was the game we were waiting for all day, the clutch, the make or break game that would see us into the next round. We fought hard but were overcome by Blackfriars who had improved dramatically throughout the day. Although the boys lost, it was a great game, point for point all match. The first set

Open Girls Knockout VolleyballOn Thursday 23 July, the Open Girls Knockout Volleyball team competed in a round-robin competition at the Mars Stadium. The team started really well by dominating the game against Riverton with a 4-0 win.

Hopes were high after the win, but spirits slowly faded away after a 3-1 loss against Nurioopta and a 3-0 loss against Swan Reach - the sets were very close. At the end of the day, the team played in a 3v4 final, but unfortunately went down 2-1. Well done to the girls who played in the team - Samantha Brown, Eunice Cubio, Emily Maddern, Lucy Northcott, Jane Oosthuizen, Hope Scales, Rylea Wilmott and Amy Yusa.

Open Boys Knockout VolleyballIt was a brisk winter’s day on Thursday 23 July, as we boarded the bus to the Mars sports centre at Marden senior college for a day of volleyball. The first game was played against Le Fevre, as momentum was set into motion with a convincing win. Many players including Daniel Schoell and Nathan Litchfield exhibited some great skills. However the next game was quite a challenge, and Cornerstone were gallant in defeat in three close sets.

Harry Wallis, Jack Milton and Tyler Shearwin never gave up in an intensely fought battle. By the third match, anticipation was high but yet again, hopes were let down by a sub par performance by the team as we went down to a team that was quite beatable. Ollie Small and Aaron Hesse demonstrated good techniques throughout the endeavour. In the fourth game, a powerful display by Sam Liersch and Brad Sandford brought home a well deserved final victory to square the ledger at two games a piece. A very good start and finish to the day, and overall a high standard of volleyball was displayed by all.

The team had a great day experiencing the highs and lows of an intense evenly matched competition. All team members played to a high standard and gave it everything over the whole day.

Indoor Cricket AchievementSean McCullum is in the State U15 Indoor Cricket Team and the U15 Australia A Indoor Cricket Team this year. The Australian National Championship was held

recently in Brisbane, and his team reached the finals. His attendance was partly supported by an Australian Sports Commission, Local Sporting Champion grant.

The WICF World Junior Series will be held in September 2015 in Brisbane which he plans to play in. He also had a great year for Outdoor cricket, having been awarded the BankSA U16 Country Cup 2014/15 Wicket Keeping Trophy; and the BankSA U17 Shield 2014/15 Outstanding Wicket Keeper Trophy. Sean also made the team of the year.

Indigenous Immersion DayDuring the last week of Term 3, the year 7 cohort had the privilege of experiencing the very first Indigenous Immersion Day at Cornerstone College. They took part in a series of activities based around what they had been studying during the preceding three weeks. The activities were designed to enable students to gain a rich and meaningful understanding of Aboriginal culture, cementing their learning for future years.

The three experiences ranged from learning about how Aboriginal people utilised the natural environment, learning about and participating in creating a joint Aboriginal art piece with Ms Smart and Ms Kennedy and finally a performance by ‘Brutha n I’ where students were challenged about their conceptions of Aboriginal people.

The students enjoyed a kangaroo sausage and damper roll for lunch, kindly prepared by Mr Pearce and Ms Filmer.

As with any day of this size a great deal of gratitude must be extended to the many people who helped put this highly successful day together. So on behalf of the Year 7 Teachers and the Year 7 cohort a massive thankyou to Jacinta Smart, Carol Kennedy, Matt Pearce, Leanne Filmer, Mary Butler, Margie Barnett and the entire Senior Leadership team.

Year 7 Boys Knockout SoccerCornerstone 0 Stirling East Primary 2So near, yet so far! Deep into extra time and with only the smallest of minutes remaining on the clock an innocuous ball was floated into the Cornerstone penalty box, a Stirling forward leapt like the proverbial salmon, the ball glanced his forehead and dropped into the net.

A stunning conclusion to what had been a magnificent game of soccer. Cornerstone were numbed and in the dying embers of the match conceded a second goal as they pushed forward in a desperate attempt to equalise. It was not to be. The match was more even than the final score-line suggests.

The Cornerstone defense of Connor Rogers, Damon Laan, Connor Fenlon and Douglas Rhodes were cast-iron in their resolve to keep out the Stirling attackers; and they did. Our dynamo midfielder, Jack Bennet, tackled, passed and moved with the tenacity of a terrier. Michael Smallridge, despite not being 100% fit, supported with some intelligent touches. Callum Page ran and ran and ran. Reuben Schumacher for a few moments looked like he was in ‘dreamland’ but soon switched on and dominated the right flank producing a number of scintillating crosses that sizzled across the goal mouth. Upfront Julian Jones and Callum Ryan chased every ball and threatened the Stirling goal. On the bench, Aedden Rees, Sidney Kentish and Harry Reid entered the fray at various points in the match contributing telling tackles and precise passes. Blake Dunnow stood resolutely in goal and his unflappable presence was a calming influence.

The boys can hold their heads high in the knowledge that they played with great resolve, skill and good sportsmanship.

Habitat for HumanitySA Lutheran Schools Mission 2015From 29 June - 12 July the four of us were privileged to be part of a team of 41 from Lutheran schools in South Australia lending our muscle to help build houses for six deserving families as part of a Habitat for Humanity project just outside Phnom Penh in Cambodia. It was great to work alongside the families as part of the building process. We worked together to cart bricks, gravel and sand, lay bricks and mix and pour concrete. By the end of our time we’d built the foundations, including filling the interior area with sand, dug holes at least 1.8 metres deep for the septic system, installed the septic tanks, built the walls of both the toilet block and half of the main house for the houses of these six families, and completed the foundations on the other two.

Through interacting with people on the trip, we not only became close to the other students, youth leaders and teachers, but we got the opportunity to get to know local children, the Habitat interpreters and employees and, most importantly the Cambodian families we were building the houses for. Over the week family members shared their stories with us. Many of the receiving families have members who are HIV affected and therefore have suffered from past discrimination. This project enables them to be a part of what is now a supportive community.

During our time we were able to see a few of the houses and meet some of the families that have already moved into their homes built by Habitat. These families now have a permanent home that is close to a free school, close to markets, and close to new job opportunities. They expressed to us their happiness in now being part of a growing and safe community and shared with us how much having a home has changed their lives and provided hope for their future.

Our week of building culminated in a hand-over ceremony in which families shared their thoughts, stories and hopes for the future with us. The families made small gifts of thanks and presented these to us, and we showered them with sweet smelling flowers as an act of blessing and a symbol of good fortune.

Mary summed up the experience beautifully:“I loved interacting with the people we worked with in Cambodia. I’ve learnt a lot from the trip and the people receiving the houses are so grateful for the support. It’s important that we do what we can do to support people in Cambodia who are currently living in poverty and facing social discrimination.”

music achievementMuch Ado About NothingLate last term 20 Year 12s visited The Adelaide College of the Arts graduates class production of Shakespeare's 'Much Ado About Nothing’. The students along with Mrs Sierp and myself thoroughly enjoyed this witty, funny but poignant performance. A huge highlight was seeing our very own old scholar Hugo Fielke, brilliant in the principal role of Benedick. A wonderful day was had by all.

The Haunting of Will ShakespeareYear 10 Drama PerformanceWilliam Shakespeare is on his way to London to become an actor. On his way he is accosted by the Three Weird Sisters from Macbeth. They need to inspire Will to become a playwright who will inspire the world so they call upon the characters of his future plays to inspire him to write them. Will is pursued by one love and finds himself another in a band of travelling players. He is haunted by the spirits in their hilarious attempt to give him material to write.

This challenging piece integrates Shakespearean scene work from Macbeth, Hamlet, Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Romeo and Juliet, Taming of the Shrew and Much Ado About Nothing. The students got their jitters out in a 4.00pm performance and were absolutely wonderful for the 7.00pm performance. How blessed we are to work with such talented and clever students.

Premier’s Reading ChallengeThe Year 7 students have been actively participating in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Mrs Bovingdon has also encouraged staff to participate and has their reading lists on display in Paideia. Reading for pleasure improves vocabulary, knowledge acquisition, reading comprehension and verbal fluency. 1.5 million books were read last year in South Australia as part of the Premier’s Reading Challenge! In the words of Dr Seuss: “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”

SA Refugee Week Poster ExhibitionMonday 15 June was the launch of the 2015 SA Refugee Week Poster Exhibition. Each year schools are asked to enter posters that convey a theme of multiculturalism, human rights, cultural diversity, anti-racism and the welcoming of refugees into Australia.

The Year 11 Design students have entered this competition since its inception 4 years ago, as it is a meaningful way for them to gain a better understanding of a complex and politicised situation. Due to our continued support of this initiative, Cornerstone was asked to provide a Year 11 student to deliver an opening speech based about their experience of participating in designing a poster. Jack Mars represented the College with an insightful and eloquent summary of his experience.

Each year several Cornerstone students’ posters have been selected to hang in the exhibitions and this year, posters by Micki Irvine-Creaser, Amy Yusa, Carly Mitchell and Lauryn Bradley were given that honour. At the opening of the exhibition, prizes are awarded for primary, secondary and tertiary categories. Lauryn Bradley was awarded a commendation for her poster, a well-deserved recognition. Congratulations to all the Year 11 students past and present who have supported this exhibition with their thoughtful, compassionate and sincere poster design, demonstrating how our state is made better by its diversity and understanding of others.

parentsteachersfriendsStaff Professional Learning WeekThe final week of Term 2 has been a dedicated Professional Learning Week for staff for many years. The staff look forward to this week each year. It provides a time for spiritual reflection, extended professional learning sessions, interaction with peers and some time for considering our teaching and learning programs and practices.

Spiritual Reflection sessions were run by staff who volunteered to lead a session reflecting on the 10 values in Lutheran Education – love, appreciation, service, compassion, humility, hope, courage, justice, forgiveness and quality. Staff chose three sessions from 12 offerings. These included reflecting on appreciation through creation, service through hospitality, compassion through story-telling and hope through art. Many activities had practical or active components and utilised various facilities around the school including Purtinga wetlands, the Laratinga walking trail, the Paideia reading tree and inbarendi.

A full day workshop for the teaching staff focused on Assessment. Key Learning Areas and some department teams also had sessions to do specific work on projects specific to their areas. The staff also were part of observing some role plays that helped us understand how Restorative Practices can be outworked in various scenarios in a school.

Some staff comments on the week:‘I really appreciated the Humility through Contemplation session. It’s amazing how loud God’s voice is when you are truly silent.’

‘It was a chance to slow down, yet still connect with my colleagues in a meaningful way. The dialogue continues into the next school term. Hope, Love and Humility - Reflective, creative, supportive, loving, sharing, totally Blessed.’

‘During PD week, I particularly valued reflecting on appreciation through creation - to place myself in the midst of unique, complex and beautiful animals and their environments was humbling and awe-inspiring.’

‘It was refreshing to explore faith through creative mediums. Each session that I participated in gave me the chance to step back, reflect and share with peers.’

On Wednesday 17 June, the Year 10 Music class swapped the traditional classroom for a tour bus and hundreds of screaming primary school children.

As a class, we wanted to share our music with the community, so the decision was made to visit St Marks (Mount Barker) and St Michaels (Hahndorf), for a 60 minute performance to all of the primary students.

The Year 10s directed the whole event, from bumping the performance space in and out for each concert, to performing. It was fantastic to watch our confident singers act as MCs for the day.

Our program included several full band charts, a special performance from our eight singers and solos from James May, Sarah Dickinson, Emily Fenwick and Sam Schultz.

Congratulations to all the Year 10 students for a successful and incredibly entertaining day.
