Hello Everyone,

AAs I write this, it seems that ourunseasonably hot summer iscoming to a close. Wow! What a

year – record rainfall during the winter, record heat during the summer and record hurricanes in thesoutheast. It makes you wonder what’s in store for us this com-ing year.

During it all, we managed to undertake another project here atthe club - the siding project. As of now, the project is at thehalfway point and so far, we haven’t run into any major prob-lems. It looks like we should have it completed before the rainscome, and without spending more money than we planned.

We plan to aerate the greens on Thursday, Sept. 21, so make yourplans accordingly. We also plan to aerate the fairways for thefirst time ever following greens aeration. We do not expect tohave to close the golf course to aerate the fairways but we mayhave to re-route play for a short time while the crew works. Wewill provide updates by email and some signage in theClubhouse when the time comes.

It is the time of year when we begin to plan for the annual elec-tion for the Board of Directors. If you are interested in servingthe club as a board member, please let me (Mike Rademaker)know or, better yet, contact a board member and let them knowof your interest. As with all clubs, the more participation thathappens at the planning stages, the better the club runs and themore successful it becomes.

The only requirement to run for the board is that you must be a“Class A” voting member of the club for at least one year priorto running. Remember – there is only one “Class A” member foreach membership even though there may be more than one per-son covered by the membership. Meetings are held at 5:30 p.m.on the second Thursday of every month. Meetings last an hour, sometimes an hour and a half.

The club benefits from members who come from different back-grounds and have different views and ideas so please considersupporting your club by volunteering to serve on the board.

Respectfully submitted,Michael Rademaker, PGA

Club Offers New Business Membership

IIn an effort to bolster membership, strengthen ties tothe local business community and offer healthy out-door oppportunities to local working people, theNCCC Board of Directors has voted to institute a newBusiness Membership program.

The program allows local businesses to purchase membershipcards (a minimum of two) that can be shared among thefirm’s employees. The business will provide up to twoauthorized employee names for each laminated card.

The first two membership cards are priced at 85 percent ofnormal memberships, the third card is at 70 percent, thefourth is at 60 percent and five or more cards are priced at 50percent of the standard membership rate. There is no initia-tion fee associated with the Business Membership.

For example, a small business purchasing two BusinessMemberships would see an annual price of $1972, whichcovers unlimited golf for four people and 12 guest passes. Alarger business might purchase five cards which wouldauthorize golf for 10 employees along with 30 guest passesfor an annual cost of $4060.

Business Memberships include normal member privileges, including six guest passes (at $10 per round) per year, but donot include voting, serving on the Board of Directors or golfcart usage. Participation in the program requires the businessto have a Federal Tax ID number and payment in advance. No refunds will be offered to any business that allows itscards to be misused.

FFall is upon us and we have had aproductive summer at NevadaCounty Country Club. After the wettest winter in memo-

ry we have experienced one of our hottest summers, but throughsome creative expense control we are holding our own in thefinancial arena.

Membership Needs a BoostMembership continues to be a concern for our club. Our attemptat recruiting new members through a rebate to existing membersproved futile. I'm disappointed to report that no new membershave been added through this innovative program.

A new Business Membership program has been developed andwas introduced in August. Through this program, local busi-nesses can purchase multiple memberships for their employeesat a significant discount. A Business Membership also providesfor guest passes for the business’s customers, vendors, or otherguests to play rounds of golf for a nominal fee. If you know anylocal business people who may be interested in participating inthis program please encourage them to see the Clubhouse stafffor details and applications.

The siding project for the Clubhouse is proceeding apace. Itseems that this may be the first siding replacement project sincethe structure’s construction in the late 1800's. Square nails, noinsulation, and true 2x4's are all indicators of this being the firsteffort. Despite some delays the remaining areas of the lowereast side and the full south side of the main building will becompleted before the rainy season.

Now that fall is upon us we will be doing some more beautifica-tion projects for the golf course. Mainly tree trimming andbrush clearing, but if you have suggestions please let me, orother Board members, know. Similarly if you are interested inparticipating, contact a Board member for dates and times.

IIt’s Handicap Renewal time. This year we have a fewchanges to announce. I mentioned in my spring column ear-lier this year that the USGA had decided to partner with only

one organization in each area to provide handicap and course rat-ing services starting in 2018, and they chose the NCGA.

All year long, the three golf organizations in Northern California(NCGA, PWGA and WGANC) have been negotiating on whatthis would mean for them all going forward, and finally lastweek they issued a joint statement, after the USGA brokered adeal between them. Rather than paraphrase, here’s the messagethe PWGA sent out:

“We are pleased to announce that the PWGA, WGANC andNCGA have agreed to a two-year collaboration plan to supportgolfers in the Northern California community with a variety ofservices, including the regional administration and issuance ofeach member’s Handicap Index. In addition to continuing thePWGA and WGANC programs, services, and other benefits, allmembers will receive full NCGA membership benefits duringthis timeframe. The previously communicated PWGA andWGANC vote regarding potential merger/unification will not beneeded until 2019 as a result of this highly collaborative process. The PWGA, WGANC, and NCGA leadership fully supports thisagreement, and thanks the USGA for their assistance, as we allwork together to foster a sustainable and vibrant future for golfin our region.”

PWGA, WGANC and NCGA have also formed a transition com-mittee to plan for and oversee a potential merger/unification of

the three organizations in 2020. So whatdoes that mean for us at NCCC?Everybody will get their handicapsthrough the NCGA next year, both menand women. If you already have your handicap through the NCGA (all menand a few women), your renewal fee is still $40 and is paiddirectly to the club (NCCC), along with your regular 4th QuarterClub Dues. If you are a member of our Ladies Club, your renewal fee is paiddirectly to the Ladies Club (NCCCWG), and it will be $67 for2018. This includes your handicap (through the NCGA), mem-bership in the PWGA, and your Ladies Club Dues (including aroster).

If you’ve been thinking about getting a handicap, 2018 is a greattime to get started. While a “full’ scoring record includes 20rounds of golf (18 holes each) you can actually establish yourhandicap with as little as 5 rounds. So if you have some oldscorecards from rounds you’ve played in the past year, we canuse those to get you started. Having a handicap lets your trackyour game, shows you how much you are improving (think posi-tive) and lets you play in fun club events.

If you have any questions about golf handicaps (either renewingor getting started), please contact me, or Mike Rademaker(NCGA handicaps) or Marian Slayton (NCGA Handicapsw/PWGA membership included). We’d be happy to help you.

HHow do you follow a recordbreaking rainfall winter/spring?Answer; with a near record

breaking hot dry summer. Wow, talkabout going from one extreme to anoth-er! Some experts have speculated that

we should be experiencing more extreme weather on both endsof the spectrum with this climate change (if you buy into the cli-mate change theory). Wherever you side on that argument, youhave to agree that the seasons have changed, shifted if you will,by a couple of months.

This has been an especially trying summer for the MaintenanceCrew because for about half of the summer we kept blowing an80 amp fuse on one of our irrigation pumps ( we think we mayhave rectified that problem) and for the same time period wehave been experiencing problems with one of our irrigation con-trollers (something we really didn't need when experiencing 100degree temps).

Getting quality applicants here to work has been a challengeover the years; and this year I thought I found the perfectgreenskeeper, and he just walked through the door. In fact, I hadtwo of them apply within days of each other. Unfortunately, Icould hire only one of them. He was perfect; he had experience, was mechanically inclined and was working on getting certifiedas a welder. He was great for the few weeks he was here; unfor-tunately he had to leave because of a family emergency.

Then there was Hikeem. He was an ex-Air Force serviceman. Hewas still in the learning process when he had to leave and goback to help his family in South Carolina with the impendinghurricane Irma. He wasn't going to be with us very long; he hadaspirations to become a police officer, we just didn't expect himto leave so soon and abruptly. So now we are back to square one, just Paul, Beto and me.

We have our fall aeration scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 21.

Keep it in the short grass, Peter

Tip From the Pro: By Mike Rademaker, PGA

TThis tip is concerning the pre-shot routine and the mentalside of golf.

While playing a round of golf, manythings occur simultaneously. Theplayer is attempting to perform whatmany consider a difficult physical actfor a few moments followed by tra-versing the countryside while usuallyhaving some enlightening and some-times amusing conversation.

The problem occurs when the conversation and other thingsovershadow our concentration when it comes to hitting the littleball. This usually happens anywhere from 70 to 120 times dur-ing the approximately 4 ? hours it takes to play a round of golf.In order to overcome these momentary lapses in concentration, Isuggest the following: Just before you hit, chip or putt the ball, step back, take a deep breath, line your shot up with the targetand for just a moment picture the ball flying, floating or rolling

toward the target and finally comingto rest in the hole, on the green, or inthe fairway. Then without hesitatingor taking any practice swings, hit theshot before you have a chance to letany negative thoughts enter yourmind. That’s right, play on autopilot.

It’s a funny thing but the first timeyou try this it’s a little scary. Youhave to let go and trust yourself with-out trying to “control” the swing.

Keep doing it though and you will become more comfortable.

This practice requires some faith and commitment but try it nexttime you play; it may make a big difference in your score.
