Kindergarten News

This week Kindergarten are learning the diagraph ‘ch’ and the ‘am’ word family. In Maths we are continuing to count backwards, as well as learning our ordinal numbers and recognising 2D shapes in our environment. We are looking at Australian animals and we are having fun learning lots of interesting facts about them.

KSV listened to step by step instructions to draw these great emus.

Mrs Stewart & Mrs Vaccarella (KSV Class Teachers)

Stage 1 News (Years 1 & 2)

1M has been looking at lines in Art. With the help of our Year 6 buddies, we have made colourful, fun flextangles to explore how lines can create movement and shape!

Mrs Mitchell (1M Class Teacher)

Stage 2 News (Years 3 & 4) Last week, 3B had some special helpers to help us learn more about ANZAC Day. Patrick’s Mum and Dad came to tell us about Patrick’s Great Great Grandfather who was an ANZAC soldier. They showed us a letter that was sent to his family after the battle, as well as some newspaper clippings. We were then lucky enough to see some real items from the army, courtesy of Patrick’s Dad, Anthony. He showed us his medals, uniform, hat, water bottle and even the bed they have to assemble themselves and lie on! Some of us then had a go on the bed! Patrick’s Mum, Dee, then told us the story of why ANZAC biscuits are so important and we had a go at making them ourselves! This experince of

seeing and hearing about real life experiences of people who have fought in wars gave our class the opportunity to try and understand what things were really like for the ANZACs, which is an important element of studying History.

Mrs B Reid (3B Class Teacher) Stage 3 News (Years 5 & 6) 5T News

Over the past week, the students of 5T have been researching how Australia’s indigenous people lived prior to the arrival of the First Fleet. They then had to convert this research into a historical narrative that reflected what an Aboriginal child might have experienced as they were growing up. The narrative also had to clearly show how our indigenous people lived, what they ate, the structure of their chosen tribal group, medicines used and how they celebrated events, if relevant.

Below is an example of one of the amazing narratives that was written.

Yuerigi Coliyur

An Aboriginal Narrative by Eden Borrie (5T)

My eyes slowly opened to sunlight streaming through the cave. I blinked, and then turned my head to face my family. My mother, my Wiyanga, was still asleep with my father, my little brother asleep in her arms. Biyanga, father, was standing near the cave’s entrance by a crackling fire, gazing off over the river. My Gumang, Grandfather, was with him. I rose from the floor and walked over to meet them.

“Yuerigi, “my Biyanga said. “Wake your Wiyanga and tell her that the sun is already past the distant mountains and the fish are at peak schooling time.” I crawled over to where Wiyanga was sleeping and gently shook her shoulder.

“Wiyanga!” I said, “It’s time for the fishing.”

My name is Yuerigi Coliyur and the Cadigal are my people. Balenbai waters provide us with all the food we need for most of the year, including foods like fish, shellfish, oysters and crabs. Fishing, however, is not a job for a boy, but for great women like my Wiyanga.

Neutral Bay Public School

My Wiyanga was always out on the water in her big, bark nowie (canoe), fishing off the sides with great lines, carr-e-juns, and burras (fish hooks) made of turban shells. Mostly we fed on snapper or mackerel, but sometimes Wiyanga hooked up eels. My babana, Manyana Coliyur and I dug up yams and wild sweet potatoes, and Gumang roasted them on the fire as a treat.

Suddenly, Biyanga yelled, “Yuerigi! Yuerigi! Come here, now!”I rushed through the water shallows and found him holding a giant Kingfish in his arms. I dragged it up to the cave and set it in front of the entrance near the fire. They must have been out very far to catch a Kingfish!

That night, Wiyanga cooked the Kingfish over the fire and Manyana gave her the five sweet potatoes that we had found. I ran down to the water’s edge and gently washed the treats in the shallows. The meal was delicious and in no time at all, the moon sat on top of the distant mountains and it was time for bed.

Sometime later, I heard my parents whispering outside, their voices although soft, were rushed and harsh. They seemed to be having an argument, no, not an argument, a discussion about something important. In the dim light I saw my babana, asleep far away from me. This was unusual for him, as he does not like to be alone when he is sleeping for fear that the water monsters will come up and destroy his spirit. But there was no time to think about that now, it was time to sleep.

“Manyana! Manyana! Wake up! Please!”

My mother’s screams woke me in the wee hours of the morning. I opened my eyes to see my babana wrapped in paperbark with my family standing around him.

“Yuerigi, fetch the leaves from the sarsapirra tree and bring them to me.”

“Yes Wiyanga, “I replied. I sprinted to the water, dove in and swam across the river to the banks on the other side. Then I skidded down a steep hill and ran to an old tree in the middle of the valley. Hastily, I ripped off some leaves from the sarsapirra.

Whatever was wrong with Manyana, I had to get the sarsapirra leaves to my mother in order to help him. I ran back up the hill, jumped awkwardly into the river and half swam, half kicked my way across to our shore. Then it was back up to the cave with the leaves. My mother boiled them in a clay pot for some time, then let them sit and go cold.

During my absence, Manyana had woken up, but his eyes were foggy and distant, and he seemed to be in great pain. He was clutching his belly in his arms and muttering strange words that seemed to be in a different language under his breath.

“Yuerigi, “Wiyanga said to me. “Get Manyana to eat the leaves, but first mash them up in your hands.”

I did exactly what my Wiyanga told me to do and shoved the sticky mess into my babana’s mouth, terror coursing through my veins. Realising what they were, he tried his best to swallow the whole lot. Biyanga, Wiyanga, Gumang and I watched to see the effects of the medicine. The sticky sarsapirra leaves should help his stomach and stop any headaches he might have.

Wiyanga shoved more leaves into his mouth. Then we waited, and waited. Finally, he coughed violently, the leaves still staying down and then he sat up. “Gumang!” Manyana said. “Wiyanga, Biyanga, Yuerigi! Am I dead?”

“Of course not, my precious babana,” I said. “You are only dead if your spirit is destroyed. The illness you had was not strong enough to destroy your spirit, thank goodness.”

As soon as the sun was up the next day, Wiyanga was out fishing in her nowie, Biyanga and Gumang were spearing rock wallabies, a rare find, and Manyana and I were digging up yams once more.

That night, we had a feast that was one never to forget. Wiyanga cooked up the four fat crabs she had caught, Gumang roasted our yams and Biyanga roasted the wallaby over the fire. Meanwhile, Manyana and I scarpered up trees to scare the possums and chased each other through the shallow water.

When the meal was finally over, Biyanga announced that the moon was over the distant mountains and it was time for bed.

We also spent time in art imaging that we were Joseph Banks and doing scientific drawings of the wondrous flora and fauna we saw on our arrival in Botany Bay.

Year 6 Interrelate Family Evening program

A family evening program on ‘Where Did I Come From?’ and ‘Preparing for Puberty’ has been organised for the evening of Wednesday 20th May at Neutral Bay Public School. The evening program will take place in the school hall and commence at 6pm sharp, finishing around 8:15pm. The program is run by Interrelate School Services, an organisation that specialises in programs which are interactive, family focused and presented in the context of caring relationships.

The program helps to prepare Year 6 children and parents for the physical, social and emotional changes associated with puberty. It also addresses changing emotions and relationships with peers and families.

We have found in the past that our parents and Year 6 children find the presentation very informative and useful.

Please note that this evening workshop is for Year 6 students and parents. It is also expected that students will sit with their parents.

There is a charge of $30 per family. Please bring $30 cash to be paid at the door.

Our canteen assistants Jocelyn Greig, Sylvia Seah, Ann-Charlotte, Samra Salman, Karen Martin, Jen Harris Flexischools website problem

We ask parents to note that if/when the Flexischools website is down (as happened last week), you can write your child’s lunch order on a piece of paper ask your child to bring it to the canteen before school starts. We can then get the orders early and can prepare them on time. If the Flexischools website is down, please do this rather than telephoning the canteen. We are very busy in the morning for the preparation and we are not able to take the orders via telephone. We appreciate your understanding on this matter.

A big thank-you to our great volunteer team in Week 2. A special thank to 1C parents who volunteered at the canteen. Ann-Charlotte organised a morning coffee at the canteen for 1C parents. That was a job well done and we welcome parents from other classes to catch up with friends, old and new, at the canteen - we look forward to offering you free muffins and coffee. The sign-up process is online and it is quick and simple to do. Please register at https://www.signupgenius.com/register or email us at [email protected]

Next week’s special is our delicious Pasta Bolognese.
