Central Powers: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy
Began with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria
Then…Imperialism, nationalism, militarism, and alliances, and issues with the balance of power in Europe…led to the “Great War”
Who: Parties Involved
Bulgaria and Allied Powers
* Because Bulgaria sided with Germany(Central Powers) during WWI the Allied Powers enforced the
Treaty after WWI.
What: Terms of the Treaty
Required Bulgaria to cede Western Thrace to Allied Powers (gave it to Greece), thus cutting off the channel to the Aegean Sea.

Also had to cede Southern Dobruja. Which is part of Romania and had
been taken in the Treaty of Bucharest of 1913 • Cede Lands to Yugoslavia
• Acknowledge the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. • Aka. Kingdom of
Yugoslavia
Terms of Treaty
Reduced Army to 20,000 men. The Allied powers made several of the other
countries of the Central Powers do this.
Pay Reparations of £100million
When: Time and Place
November 27, 1919 Did not go in to affect until
August 9, 1920
Signed in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France (hence the name)
Signed by: Mr. Alexander Stamaboliski, President of the Council of Ministers, Minister of War
And ministers of several other countries
Results
Second National Catastrophe
They had to give back all the land they once gained, and cutting of the outlet to the Aegean Sea which led to and economic downfall.
Regained Southern Dobruja from the Treaty of Craiova, signed in 1940.
League of Nations
Monitored Bulgaria’s improvement due to the Treaty.
If Bulgaria had a problem with any of the Allied Powers they had to go through the League of Nations to settle the dispute
Put Treaty into action for at least 5 years
League of Nations would step in a take over government if the current leader was not properly abiding the Neuilly Treaty.
World War II
Bulgaria Allied with Nazi Germany in WWII and temporarily regained some of the land lost.
Because the treaty was only in place for Five years after World War II Bulgaria did not suffer as much.
Did it Work?
For the most part YES. Bulgaria did not react with violence, until siding
with Nazi Germany in World War II, and regained some land that was takenin World War I.
Gained the Southern Dobruja.
And did not have to pay all of the reparations because of World War II
Did it Work?
Somewhat NO. Bulgaria lost a lot of land from the Treaty after
World War I
Lost a major port to the Aegean Sea, which was bad for the economy
And went through Bulgaria’s Second National Catastrophe.
