Heading Back to School Without Breaking the Bank
Did you just say “back to school” and it’s still the middle of summer? While it’s hard to utter those words, early planning leads to smart school shopping later.
Between grade school, high school, college, and all the teachers, millions of people will be searching for those back-to-school supplies sooner than you think.
To avoid the poor-quality, high-priced items, here are a few tips to make sure you get the right supplies without breaking your budget.
• Make a list. Before you even think about going to the store (or online), make a list. Know exactly what you need before you go shopping. Write it down. Put into catego-ries such as Paper, Writing, Electronics, Folders/Binders/Organization, etc.
• Check your old supplies. We tend to overbuy each year, so take inventory of what you already have.
• Don’t focus on the style. You don’t have to have matching prints on all your supplies. Just because there is a new iPhone case that matches a new iPad case that matches your bedspread… you don’t have to upgrade to have it all. Think function, not style.
• Start early. By planning what you need (remember that list you made?) you space out your purchases. This helps if you’re on a tight budget. By just purchasing a few items at a time, your wallet won’t feel as empty all at once.
• Go for the quality when shopping electronics. When it comes time to do that really extensive research paper, you’re going to wish you had a quality laptop/printer to get the job done. When searching for quality items, remember to do your research. Make sure that it has what you need. Quality doesn’t always mean the most expensive, just make sure the specs will meet your needs.
• Buy used. When it comes to textbooks, used is definitely the most economical. Check for used (but good condition) reading materials online or at your local bookstore. Not only will it save on the cost, many times, they come with good notes that other stu-dents have taken.
Back to school may be the last thing you want to think about during the middle of sum-
mer, but planning ahead and knowing what you already have will save you money. If you
don’t have the budget available, look into a personal loan. This will provide funds to
make the purchases you need and be able to pay it back over time. ■

Tips to Reduce Debt Whether you are currently debt free (WAY
TO GO!) or if you’re working towards that
goal, here are a few tips that can help you
remain debt free or reduce debt.
Be ready for the unexpected. A car wreck
could happen in an instant and then you’d
be responsible for car repairs and possible
medical bills. If you’re not prepared with
an emergency fund, you could end up in a
tight spot. Make sure you start saving a
little bit each month, so when those unex-
pected bills happen, you’ll be prepared.
Stick to your lists. Always make a list be-
fore you go shopping. Only buy what you
intended to. With online ordering with
pick-up or home delivery—the few extra
dollars you spend on that service could
save you more than what you might have
spent on the unintended purchases that
happen when you walk through the store.
Take a good look at your current contracts
and subscriptions. Are you paying for a
gym membership, streaming service, ca-
ble, apps or games, etc. that you are just
not using? Decide if you’re really getting
any value from the service or subscription.
If you think, “but I might use it one day…”
then it’s probably time to let that one go.
When “one day” comes, you can subscribe
again. Until then, stop giving them your
money. ■

Thoughts to Consider When Buying a Car
Whether you are considering a new vehicle or a “new to you” vehicle, here are some things to keep in mind.
• Need vs. Want. What is the primary reason you’re looking for this vehicle? Do you have a long commute and
need something that gets better gas mileage? Are you looking for a new toy to take on weekend trips? Have
you had a life change and need to go from the small sports car and upgrade to a family size car or SUV? Are
you now an empty nester and ready to trade the SUV for the small sports car? Maybe you need to upgrade
so that you have the latest technology with Bluetooth and heated seats? Whatever your reason for a new
vehicle, take some time to really think about what you need and weigh your options before getting too excit-
ed about which car looks like the next big thing.
• Monthly payments vs. Total price. Take a close look at your budget. Consider what is more important to
you… the price per month or the overall price of the car. Take time to factor in what a new vehicle will do to
the cost of your insurance. Ask your agent for a couple of quotes for different vehicles. Think about gas mile-
age and if the newer vehicle will save you money each trip to the pump or make a bigger dent in your wallet.
Oil changes, tires, preventative maintenance are important things to consider as well. Make a list of the
different increases and decreases based on the vehicles you are considering to get an idea if this new vehicle
will really fit into your budget.
• Know the car before you buy. Do your research. Check reviews and see what others are saying about it. Did
they just purchase and still have that “new car glow” or have they had it for a while and still love it? TEST
DRIVE, TEST DRIVE, TEST DRIVE! More than just around the block… If it is something you’re really consider-
ing, ask for an overnight test drive, or even a couple of days. Get to know the car and see how it truly rides
on your typical routes.
HealthNet Federal Credit Union has several resources to help with your research. We have calculators to esti-
mate your monthly payment, online pricing and trade-in guides, and knowledgeable, friendly loan officers to
help guide you through the process. The credit union can provide pre-approval checks so that once you’re ready
to make that deal, all you have to do is sign the dotted line! Check out our website for the latest promotions,
most current rates, and to apply for financing. ■
