33.2 ORGANIZATION OF NERVOUS SYSTEM

*The Central Nervous System is the brain and the spinal chord.

Page 5: nervous system

PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM

*The Peripheral Nervous System- consists of the sensory and motor neurons that carry information to and from the CNS.

THE BRAIN Facts about your Brain:

• *The brain is the control center of the body

• *Each part of the brain controls different thoughts or actions of the body.

• You have over 100 Billion neurons• The Cerebrum is the largest part

and is divided into two halves• The two halves communicate

through a bundle of nerves.

PARTS OF THE BRAIN

*Cerebrum- largest part of the brain; controls muscles, thinking, learning, memory, decision making, and interpreting signals from the sense organs.

Page 8: nervous system

PARTS OF THE BRAIN*Cerebellum- located below

the cerebrum, helps to coordinate muscle movements.

PARTS OF THE BRAIN

*Brainstem connects the brain to the spinal cord.

*Medulla is in the lower part of the brainstem. This control involuntary body functions such as breathing, digestion, and heart rate.

Page 10: nervous system

SPINAL CORD

*The spinal cord is also part of the CNS. (central nervous system)

*The spinal cord sends messages from the brain to the rest of the body, and back again.

It is a ropelike structure made of many neurons.

It runs from the base of the brain down to the lower part of the back and is protected by the backbone.
