A. Hatching Egg SanitationIf eggs have been sanitized on the farm, they can be moved immediately to the setter trays for storage. However, if eggs arrive from different sources or have an unknown hygiene status, they must be sanitized with an appropriate disinfectant solution using label directions, such as BioSentry® BioPhene™.

B. Hard Surface Cleaning and DisinfectionFor terminal environmental cleaning, including, but not limited to, setters, hatchers, egg handling area, chick processing room, and hallways and equipment, begin by removing dust and debris from all surfaces and dispose of accordingly. Use a pressure washing system to spray or foam and apply a foaming cleaner, such as BioSentry® Chlor-A-Foam™ or DuPont™ Chlor-A-Foam™ XL, at the recommended level. Rotate in an acidic foaming cleaner, like BioSentry® Acid-A-Foam™ or DuPont™ Acid-A-Foam™ XL once week a month to prevent hard water and scale build up. Scrub areas where heavy or stubborn soiling appears. Allow the cleaner to soak 10-15 minutes before rinsing all surfaces with clean, hot water at a high pressure. Remove excess water, spray an appropriate broad-spectrum disinfectant to all surfaces at low pressure (300 psi) and allow it to dry, or rinse, per the product’s application directions. Recommended disinfectants include BioSentry® 904, DuPont™ SentraMax™ Broad-Spectrum Disinfectant and BioSentry® BioPhene™. Be sure to read the product label before use and follow the instructions for all products to ensure optimal efficacy.

C. Fogging Disinfection of Setters and HatchersIn multi-stage setters and hatchers, fogging with a disinfectant solution is recommended after new eggs have been set or transferred. If eggs explode in the setter due to bangers or rots, the level of contamination will rise dramatically unless a rapid disinfectant is administered. Daily fogging of the setter should be continued until transfer. Hatchers should be fogged every 12 hours from transfer to 24 hours prior to pulling the hatch. DuPont™ SentraMax™ Broad-Spectrum Disinfectant is the recommended product for fogging.

D. Egg Tray and Chick Box CleaningAll egg trays, setter trays and chick boxes must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected prior to reuse or return to the farm. Using a pressure washing system, soak all trays and crates with an appropriate detergent cleaning solution before rinsing with clean water and allowing them to dry. If using an automatic tray swashing machine, use an appropriate non-foaming, heavy-duty tray wash detergent cleaner. Use either a pre-diluted solution or add the correct volume of concentrate to each wash tank. Recommended cleaners for this application method are BioSentry® Liquid Tray & Egg Wash or DuPont™ OxiEdge™ XL. Much like hard surface cleaners, acidic cleaners should be rotated in one week a month to prevent hard water and scale build up. These cleaners include BioSentry® Acid Tray Wash and DuPont™ AcidEdge™. After each wash, the machine should be emptied, washed clean with fresh water and sprayed with a broad spectrum disinfectant, such as DuPont™ Virkon® S.

E. Hatchery Processing Water and Drain SystemIncoming water should be tested and treated using Neogen’s water disinfection program featuring DuPont™ Anthium Dioxcide® activated with the BioSentry® AquaPrime® Activator. Drains provide a perfect environment to harbor bacteria. Care should be taken to sanitize these areas regularly with a disinfectant, such as DuPont™ Virkon® S.

Page 3: Neogen’s Poultry Hatchery BioSecurity Program · Rodents are generally a threat to any biosecurity program, and in order to keep poultry operations profitable, a rodent control

In order to manage the hygiene level at your hatchery, Neogen offers a range of products to verify the effectiveness of a hatchery’s sanitation efforts. These products detect the amount of organic matter, such as bacteria, yeast and mold, that remains after sanitation has been completed. Options include.

A. AccuPoint® Advanced Hygiene Monitoring SystemKnowing the sanitation status immediately after your cleaning and disinfection procedure is necessary to efficiently keep your hatchery on schedule. Using a relative measurement of the energy transport molecules produced by all living things, ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the AccuPoint® Advanced system provides a reading of how clean your surface is in less than 20 seconds. The AccuPoint® Advanced Hygiene Monitoring System is comprised of a reader, samplers, and data management software.

AccuPoint® Advanced Samplers• Color-coded for easy identification of surface, water, and access samplers• Patented flat-head design breaks through biofilm and increases surface contact

AccuPoint® Advanced Reader• Uses RFID technology, reducing test time and increasing test plan accuracy• Rapid time to result• Full-color high resolution screen• Detects small differences to identify ATP levels• Lifetime reader replacement

AccuPoint® Advanced Data Manager• Records and tracks results• Generates reports on test results• Identifies trends and problem sites• Manages test plans

B. Bacteria do not only grow on flat surfaces. Neogen’s Hy-labs® dip slide paddles are a reliable, economical, and time-saving monitoring tool that can reach where typical petri dishes cannot. Hy-labs® agar slides can be used directly on work surfaces, dipped into fluids, or accept a transfer from a conventional swab. Incubate the dip slide and then qualitatively compare to the included easy-to-interpret charts. Hy-labs® dip slide paddles offer a convenient testing for total microbial counts, E. coli/coliforms, and yeast and mold.

Neogen’s Poultry Hatchery BioSecurity Program

Rats and mice are a major economic threat around hatcheries. They can contaminate egg holding rooms, spread disease, and weaken concrete slabs and walkways with their burrowing activities. Rodents are generally a threat to any biosecurity program, and in order to keep poultry operations profitable, a rodent control program should be implemented. Ask about Neogen’s 4 Step Rodent Control Program, which can break the cycle of rodent anti-coagulant resistance.

1. PREVENT. Clean, clear, and implement preventative measures. 2. IDENTIFY. Find the location and severity of the problem. 3. EXECUTE. Implement baiting strategy according to target rodents and locations.4. MONITOR. Monitor the effectiveness of your program with auditing and record keeping.

BETTER BAIT. BETTER RESULTS.

Neogen’s 4 Step Rodent Control Program uses a rotational baiting strategy utilizing Havoc® Attack, Di-Kill®, and Cykill™ products, shown to break the cycle of anticoagulant resistance.

A. Disinfectant Boot BathsAll personnel and visitors should sue disinfectant boot baths upon entering the hatchery. Baths should be changed every day or when visible contamination is evident. The recommended products for footbaths are DuPont™ Virkon® S, BioSentry® BioQuat™ 20, and DC&R®.

B. Truck WashAny vehicle entering the site must pass through a disinfectant wheel wash or vehicle spray. Mobile equipment brought onto the site should be cleaned and disinfected before being allowed to enter. Particular attention should be placed on internal and external surfaces including floor mats, wheel arches, mud guards and exposed chassis. Acceptable vehicle disinfectants include BioSentry® BioQuat™ 20, DC&R®, and DuPont™ Virkon® S.

C. Hand WashingAll visitors to the site should be required to wash their hands before entering. All employees should wash their hands before starting work, after breaks, and when changing activities such as chick and egg handling operation in a hatchery.

D. VisitorsOnly essential personnel or visitors should be permitted access to the site. Personnel and visitors entering the site should be provided with full protective clothing and a shower-in, shower-out policy should be implemented where possible. A sign-in log is essential for tracking visitors.

E. Vector ControlAn integrated pest management program is essential for controlling rodents and insects which are responsible for the spread of numerous pathogens, including Salmonella. Neogen has a rodenticide program that offers a full line of rodent control products, featuring Havoc® Attack, Di-Kill®, and Cykill™ products. For insect control, Neogen can provide recommendations from the Prozap® product line.
