    I f youre after comforting Italian food in a cosy, convivial atmosphere, The Eatalian fi ts the bill. Located below Eatery JHB just down the road from Thomas Maxwell Bistro on Parkmores 11thStreet, The Eatalian is proving to be a popular addition to the suburbs thriving food scene after opening just fi ve months ago.

    The pizza oven as you walk in is welcoming and allows for a huge pizza selection on the menu, along with a good range of classic Italian meat and pasta dishes. Besides dinner, The Eatalian is also open for breakfasts and lunches on most days. If youre in a hurry, stop in on your way to work for the restaurants in-house co ee blend, or pick up some authentic fresh Italian ingredients from the deli. We chatted with co-owner, Fabio Razzino.

    Q: Why did you open The Eatalian?A: My brother, Marco, and I decided

    to bring our extensive histories in the restaurant industry together in one space. We wanted to o er South Africa something more

    than a restaurant, and we wanted to start cooking again like our grandmothers used to not overcomplicating things while using fresh, unprocessed ingredients.

    Q: What made you choose Parkmore?

    A: We know the area well and believe its the perfect client base to launch the brand. The location of our restaurant was occupied by a convenience store for two decades, followed by an Indian co ee shop and then a deli. It was then an Indian restaurant which ran for about a year before we arrived.

    Q: How would you sum up your cuisine?

    A: Contemporary Italian using classic fl avours in new and exciting dishes. We o er four di erent food time zones cappuccino and breakfast, our deli selling fresh ingredients and ready-made meals or co ee to go, lunch and afternoon light meals, and then our dinner pizza and pasta menu.

    Q: What are your signature items?A: Our large range of pizzas, oxtail

    made the Roman way, our Filetto Balsamico and our special Eatalian roast co ee blend.

    Q: Whats in store for the future?A: We want to build several restaurants

    that o er The Eatalian philosophy, which Marco and I grew up living. This means not only o ering food, co ee and drinks, but also creating a space where we can host meaningful lifestyle conversations, such as our co ee and food tasting events. We want consumers to integrate us into their lives so that they become part of our family.

    Recently I came across a project that sounds as incredible on a larger scale. Its a new worldwide community project that was launched by colour and paint expert Annie Sloan. The idea is to transform local community buildings with her paint and decor accessories. You nominate a building in your area that you think needs a new lease of life (like a school hall, library, or community centre), and put forward your reasons for your nomination before the end of the month.

    The formal dining room is on its way to becoming a thing of the past. For many people the space represents a suburban ideal that just doesnt resonate with how we live today. For one thing, people often live in smaller homes with no space for a dining room (or could find better use for the space: from home offices to rooms for additional family members).

    Additionally, most of us eat more meals in front of the TV or at the kitchen counter anyway. Nigella Lawson recently got some flak for admitting that her bedside table is stocked with condiments because of her propensity to eat in bed, but surely most of us arent that far behind?

    As a response to this trend, were seeing the so-called eat-in kitchen as a focus in interior design. This means that the emphasis is on cooking and sharing food in the same space, with elements like kitchen islands being designed with open sides to allow for seating

    right where the action is. Alternatively, as in the Cape Town kitchen designed by Alpine German Kitchens, counters are also being extended to include an integrated dining area.

    While this is not necessarily a new phenomenon kitchen tables and breakfast nooks have been included in homes for a long time making them the primary dining experience in a home is. This shift towards a more integrated eating and dining experience is more in line with how we live today, and mirrors the restaurant trend towards open kitchens. Watching your food being prepared when you eat out is part of the experience, so having a separate dining room is no longer on the menu.

    Yivani Naturals is a skincare company that makes use of natural ingredients from indigenous South African herbs. Founder Ntshantsha TafeniMajombozi originally sold her products through cosmetic shops and health spas, but has in the last year begun opening a series of stores around Joburg and the business just keeps growing.

    Q: How did your business start?A: My grandmother used natural

    herbs for the treatment of minor ailments. When I was growing up I lost interest in her remedies, but later, I decided to try to identify why black people are losing their traditional herbal wisdom. This led to me and Bulelwa Mapongwana to come up with the Yivani Naturals concept in 2009 to overcome the stigma attached to traditional healing. We launched the business in 2011 with funding from my own pocket. In the last year, we have opened stores in 27Boxes in Melville and then at the Workshop in Newtown.

    Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop?

    A: Newtown has a cultural traditional history, and we wanted to be part of that vibe. We have a product that takes people down memory lane, and the use of natural herbs fi tted in perfectly with the history of the area.

    Q: How did you find your premises?A: We were attracted by the idea of the

    Workshop, so we discussed with them which space would best suit our needs.

    Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business?

    A: During the week, between 30 and 50, and on the weekend anywhere between 50 and 200.

    Q: Do you have any expansion plans?A: We are opening a store in The Box

    Q: Do you operate online as well?A: We have a website but we dont sell

    Q: Whats your most popular item?A: The fl agship essential oils

    that we use are impepho and mhlonyane, and people just cant get enough of our body butter.

    The most expensive addresses in South AfricaWhere only a handful of sales topped the R20m price mark five years ago, there are today no fewer than 22 of the countrys residential streets where this is now the average sales price.

    Prices in these streets now regularly top the R20m price mark and range to as much as R100m in Sandton and R200m to R350m on Cape Towns Atlantic Seaboard, according to Samuel Seeff, chairman, Seeff property group.

    Based on a study of Lightstone and Propstats data undertaken by the Seeff property group, the Cape property market is literally streets ahead of the rest of the country with no less than 15 of these streets nine on the Atlantic Seaboard (Clifton, Fresnaye and Bantry Bay) and six in the Southern Suburbs (Bishopscourt and Constantia).

    The remaining seven streets are in the Joburg and Sandton suburbs of

    Sandhurst, Hyde Park and Bryanston.

    So, if you are looking for the most exclusive address in the country, make it one of these top-ranked streets, says Seeff. By investing here, your property is surrounded by some of the most valuable residential real estate in the country, and, based on history, property values are likely to continue appreciating at inflation-topping rates.

    The Reit sector to consider role in political change

    The chairman of the South African Real Estate Investment Trust (Reit) Association, Laurence Rapp, has accepted a challenge to consider what role this sector can play in ushering in new leadership.

    Addressing the South African Reit Conference in Sandton in March, Reuel Khoza, chairman, Aka Capital, said South African business had to consider its role in driving change in South Africa.

    We are as much cursed with a spell of leadership famine or blessed with the feast of leadership. The choice is ours. We can develop and unleash the talent that is all around, or allow it to wither on the vine and continue lamenting the paucity of leadership in South Africa, says Khoza.

    Khoza challenged South Africas business leaders to do what they could to challenge the current regime and to support a generation of new leaders. Nobody is predetermined to

    be our leader in spite of everything. This requires an understanding that in the final analysis, the citizen is responsible for its own future. The crossroads South Africa faces, demand resolutions, he says.

    Rapp says the Reit sector should take these words to heart. We heard a business leader speak so frankly about the need for dramatic change and the role that business has to play in driving that change. We in the Reit sector need to consider our role.

    Real estate in the affordable housing sector

    Facts on hedge funds

    F rom this year ordinary investors in South Africa have been given the opportunity to add another tool to their portfolios. New regulations have introduced the concept of retail hedge funds to the market, allowing investors to access these funds in the same way that they currently do with unit trusts.

    Hedge funds have been operating in the country since the early 2000s, but until now they have really only served life companies, pension funds and high-net-worth individuals who can afford to invest a few million at a time. With the introduction of retail hedge funds, however, they are now going to be available to anyone.

    The first thing to understand about local hedge funds is that, for the most part, they are not the sort of weird and wonderful products that make the news in other parts of the world. The South African industry is quite conservative and uses only a few basic strategies. The main concern for most local managers is to use hedging techniques to protect against big losses.

    The best illustration of this is that during the 2008 market crash, the majority of local hedge funds significantly outperformed the JSE. In a year when the All Share Index lost 23%, many hedge funds actually delivered positive returns.

    Most of them are therefore not the kinds of risky investments that try to make 30% or 40% every year. They rather aim to deliver stable returns that will be fairly predictable, whether the market is up or down. That is something that every investor should want to hear.

    There are, however, a few things that anyone looking at these products should be aware of. The first is that retail hedge funds may not be as liquid as unit trusts. Where money in a unit trust can be accessed in a few days, withdrawals from hedge funds could take up to a month.

    Hedge funds may also require fairly large initial investments. The first retail products need a minimum lump sum of R50,000.

    Finally, the best way for investors to get into hedge funds will probably be through funds of hedge funds that blend a selection of managers and funds together. This not only reduces the risk of trying to pick the right products, but also means you will get a broad selection of the best of what is available.
