It is May and normally that means May flowers, but for me it means the countdown has be-gun…..the National ASG Confer-ence will soon be here.

Before I get into the conference conversation, I wanted to thank all of you that attended the Fit to Fab presentation we had in April. It takes a lot of planning and hours of prep work by your CAB to bring these events to you. The best reward is when we see so many of you enjoying the show. Judy has a very creative mind and it showed with all of the variations that were modeled for us from just two basic patterns.

Once again Sandra’s fabrics were wonderful. From the bags I saw go out to your cars, I think you thought so too. So as I attend the NG groups this month I hope to see you wearing your version of Fit to Fab created in Sandra’s fabrics. If you have photos of your garments, send them to me so I can share them with Judy and Sandra.

This July the spotlight will be on our Chapter as the conference begins on July 16th, at the Town

and Country in Mission Valley. Some of you have already reg-istered for classes. Our 2014 Jacket Challenge participants will join us on Saturday for the Fashion Show lunch wear-ing their jackets. Many of you have inquired about volun-teering at the convention. National has requested volunteers in the following areas:

Registration

Hospitality Suite/Sewing Lounge

Fashion Show

Classroom ticket taking

Rhoda Keegan will be the one to contact to sign up. In this newsletter issue there is an article outlining when and how many volunteers we ex-pect to need. We also need some of you with flexibility as more requests for volunteers may arise closer to the start of the conference.

Remember to read this news-letter cover to cover and the emails we will be sending you with conference updates.

I’m sure you remember Joe Vecchiarelli, from Fashion Supplies Inc. and his won-derful dress forms. Joe has been and con-

tinues to be a strong supporter of ASG and our Chap-ter. When I heard that he needed another “worker” for Puyallup, I thought I could do a little pay back for all he has done for us.

I have never been to Puyallup, and it was on my bucket list so just how hard could this be. My calen-dar only allowed me to work for three days, Wednes-day, Thursday and Friday. I figured that while Joe was teaching I could wander the booths and absorb all the sewing wonders of the show and of course find treasures to buy. I was so excited, this was going to be a trip to remember!!!!

After a quick stop in my fabric stash pile I made up two Judy Kessinger T tops and was off to pack. My flight to Washington was so clear you could see Mt. Rainier and the entire Seattle skyline. I took that as another good sign that this was going be the best trip.

Joe and his employee, Luis, drove from Los Angeles in a twenty foot rental truck full of all kind of notions, irons and of course dress forms. We met up at the hotel on Tuesday night. The plan for Wednesday was for Joe and Luis to leave early to begin setting up the booth. I would arrive around 10AM to help stock the booth. I went to bed not with sugar plum fairy dreams but dreams of all the goodies I would find to buy at the expo….. I could not wait!

Wednesday morning dawned and I was in the show-er when it happened. Joe called and told me the truck had been stolen. I totally blew him off thinking it was a practical joke. Judy Kessinger called to ask if the police had arrived. I figured she was in on the joke. Finally I when downstairs to the lobby in my PJ’s and with my hair dripping wet. The joke was on me. THE TRUCK WAS STOLEN! Most of the day was a

blur but the decision was made to stay and make the best of it.

Once we arrived at the fairgrounds and other ven-dors learned of Joe’s lost, they all were very shocked but supportive of Joe decision to stick it out. Every-thing in the booth was borrowed and it looked good.

Thursday was opening day of the expo and Joe taught his first class, what a trooper. One of Joe’s clients contacted the local television media who jumped on the story. A news crew came to the expo later that day and filmed the story for the 11 PM news.

Friday more classes, talked to attendees and of course told the story once or twice. No news on the truck but we kept our figures crossed.

Saturday, as I was heading home there was still no news on the truck. When I landed there were sever-al messages from Joe. A viewer of the newscast spotted the truck and called the local law enforce-ment. The truck had been found and Joe was on his way to pick it up. Sadly most of the inventory was gone.

The story does not end there! The news crew wanted to do a live interview with Joe from the Expo so everyone headed to the fairgrounds. Joe wanted to straighten up his booth signs so he stood on a table to adjust them. He fell off the table and broke his leg In pain he did the interview and then headed to the emergency room.

Joe still faced the long drive back to Los Angeles and a trip to the doctor. He did two more shows before returning home to have surgery!!!!! He had surgery mid-April and now is at home healing.

Joe will be at the National Convention so stop by his booth and give him a hug for being such a trooper and super vendor. He goes to great lengths to bring us great notions and dress forms that makes our sewing better.

Yes the trip was one to remember! I think I hold the title of the only woman to go to the Expo and NOT buy a thing!

Her master top pattern started as a simple tee top. By added triangles to the side seams it becomes a top out of the Nordstrom catalog. But it did not stop there. By the end of the presentation the top had be transformed into multiple jackets, coats and finally an off the shoulder evening top.

On to her master pant pattern. The basic elastic pants pattern variations ranged from the classic waistband and pockets, the most comfortable pair of jeans you will ever wear to airy wide leg elastic waist pants. My favorite pant modification is “Lady Legs”. Using four way stretch pointe knit, your fit the basic pant pattern. With the construction directions from the website you have the comfort of leggings with a little ease that slims and lengthens your legs.

At the end of the presentation we all had visions of future sewing projects running through our heads. To make sure we had fabric to make these creations, Sandra and her wonderful fabrics were there!! To keep our attention during the presentation Sandra and her family set up the “fabric store” in another room near the main meeting room.

It was a day of friendship, sharing our love of sewing and buying more fabric. How much better can it get! I really enjoyed the day and I hope you did as well.

On March 7th many of you join Judy Kes-singer for the Fit to Fabulous Trunk Show. For two and half hours Judy took us through the steps to sew a designer casual wardrobe using only TWO master patterns.

Combining her power point presentation and live models recruited from the audi-ence she brought the garments to life. The models wander thought the room so the attendees could touch and view de-tails up close.

WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH ASG?

Many times, we can get very carried away with our own chapter that we forget we are a part of a much larger entity – the Ameri-can Sewing Guild! If you have not been to the ASG website for a while, please take note. It is full of information, videos, educa-tion, newsletters from around the US, and events from all over, too! There is a machine embroidery video series filled with ex-cellent information. Here are the videos in this series.

By Nancy Stringer

Nancy Stringer’s passion for sewing picked up soon after retirement.

She took weekly continuing education classes off and on for about

three years at a local community college from teacher Kathleen Swan-

son (now retired). The moto jacket, KwikSew 3764, was her last project

from Kathleen’s “Sew Like a Pro” class series. For this project, Nancy

found the perfect fabric in her stash—a textile of unknown fiber con-

tent but with a suede finish. To get the more stable hand she wanted,

she interfaced the yardage for the whole jacket with fusible interfac-

ing.

This pattern was a challenge for Nancy because she had never sewn a

collar or topstitched before, and there were five zippers with three

insertion techniques. To hold the zippers in place for stitching, she used wash-away basting tape, her new

favorite notion. She delicately pressed everything as she sewed, using silk organza pressing cloth. She

made several fitting adjustments, including a full-bust adjustment in a princess seam and forward and

sloping shoulder alterations.
