Dear Members and Apprentices: Hopefully you have been able to enjoy the beautiful fall weather we have been having this year. It’s a perfect excuse to get out and play a few rounds of golf. This past week-end I had the great opportunity to attend the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah Country Club with Vinne Krikac of State Farm Insurance Agency and a Nebraska PGA spon-sor. We had a great time despite the fact that the ending didn't go as planned. It was great to see several of you who were able to make the trip, as well, and enjoy this tre-mendous event. As the Nebraska Section PGA Tournament season draws to a close for 2012, I just want to thank each of you for your continued support and participation in our events this year. We had a fantastic season; with increased participation in nearly every event. To finish up the season, I am asking that each of you plan on attending the 2012 Fall Merchandise Show/Education Seminar and Fall Meeting on October 14-15. Champi-ons Run will again be the host facility for these events. There will be a lot of beneficial information presented to the membership through both the education and Fall Meet-ing. We promise it will be an exciting event to end a great year. I hope to see each of you there. Thanks again for your commitment to our game.

Respectfully,

David Honnens, PGA Executive Director/CEO Nebraska PGA

E M P LOY M E N T

Bruce Lubach, PGA, is The PGA of America Employment Consultant for the Iowa, Midwest, Minnesota and Nebraska Sections. [email protected] | (402) 261-3604.

I n my previous article, I wrote about the sixth and final step in the Player Development “Circle

of Life”. That circle was completed with your tracking and reporting your success with your

employer in the Player Development arena. I may have been a little premature in the timing of the arti-

cle, but nonetheless, if I got you to think about “telling your story”, then I accomplished my mission.

As the season winds down, PLEASE, PLEASE do not fail to do the reporting component. As I have

mentioned before, pgalinks has an excellent template called the PGA Professional Report found on the

PGA Employment page. Simply scroll down to the “Employment Services for You” and it is the first

page to highlight.

I am getting ready to attend the Fall Meetings in Nebraska, Minnesota and Iowa in October. One of my

topics I will be talking about is Player Development. I am hopeful that any facet of this initiative has

been tried by you at your facility. I want to hear any success stories you can share with me and then I

want you to assure me that your employer knows what you have done!

The one item I keep bringing to the forefront is the “It’s Personal” theme. The investment of your time

and energy into Player Development surely does make it personal! Everyone seems to want a “piece”

of you and the one finite area we have in our day is time! Time away from our family; time away from

playing; where does the day go?? I want the time you invest in Player Development to make sense!

That is why in the last six months, I have attempted to give you a blueprint of “how” to incorporate a

meaningful program at your facility. Hopefully, the time you have invested has created one of two

things or both: more golfers and additional revenue! After all, isn’t that what matters to our employer?

Now is the time to step up and create that report and quantify your value! Prove to your employer that

you are driving revenue and creating more players- a definite plus in enhancing job security!

Zywiec Claims Yamaha Pro-1AM Despite Difficult Conditions

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa- The players were tested by extreme wind conditions all day at the Yamaha Pro-1AM that was held at The Ridge Golf Club. Shane Zywiec, PGA of Highlands Golf Course was able to manage the difficult elements and finish at top of the professional leaderboard at even par. Zywiec’s even par round was good enough for a one shot victory over Troy Harder, PGA, Matt Nice, PGA and Nick Sha-nahan, PGA who all finished at one-over par. The team division was easily won by the team of Troy Harder, PGA and his amateur playing partner Doug Rose. These two finished at nine under-par in one net contest, which was four shots better than the teams of Shane Zywiec, PGA and Brook Darnell as well as Jon Petersen, PGA and Tony Roth. The highlight of the day went to Doug Rose who made a hole-in-one one the par three 12th hole. Rose used a seven iron from 175 yards that car-ried the water perfectly and rolled into the hole. The Nebraska PGA would like to give a special thanks to Randy Reardon and Blaine Foreman of Yamaha for their continued support of the Ne-braska PGA.

Wil Collins Wins Playoff to Capture Wells Fargo Nebraska Open

Columbus, NE- Day one of the 2012 Wells Fargo Nebraska Open finished with Jon Hurley of O’Neil, NE leading the way after his stellar bogey free round of seven under-par, 64. Hurley has a one shot lead over the 2006 Wells Fargo Nebraska Open champion, Justin Herron, who finished the day at five under-par. Scoring conditions were great at Elks Country Club on day one where 51 of the 132 players fin-ished at even par or better. Hur-ley’s round was highlighted by back-to-back eagles on holes #12 and #13 and also threw in four birdies over the course of his round. David Clouse of Friend, NE and Mitchell Klooz of Lau-rel, NE lead the way for the amateur division after shoot-ing a two-over, 73. Klooz is continuing his stellar play from this summer after winning the Nebraska Junior Am-ateur and finishing runner-up at the Nebraska State Ama-teur. With another beautiful day in the forecast and many great players in contention the second round should provide a lot of excitement. The second round will continue at 8:00

A.M. Saturday morning. After the second round the professional field will be cut to the low 49 and ties. The second round at the Wells Fargo Nebraska Open proved to be moving day for several people as they made a run to the top of the leaderboard. There will be a three-way tie for the lead heading into the final round but several close behind. Sharing the lead

at eight under-par is Wil Collins of Albuquerque, NM, Brad Hopfinger of Lake Forest, IL and Zenon Brown of Arvada, CO. First round leader Hurley will start the day one back along with four others. The low round of the day was shared by Zenon Brown and the 2012 Wells Fargo Nebraska Open low amateur, Brett Nymeyer of Canada, who shot a second round six under-par, 65. Brown and Nymeyer both propelled them-selves up the leaderboard as Brown sits at top and Ny-meyer is just one shot back. Both Brown and Nymeyer’s rounds consisted of six birdies and one bogey. David Clouse of Friend, NE, will head into the final round as the low amateur. Clouse followed his first round 73 with a second round 70. This gives him a four shot

lead over Jayson Brueggemann of Lincoln, NE. The final round will begin at 9:00 A.M. at the Elks Country Club. Fourteen players are within three shots of the lead which will pro-vide for great excitement. Wil Collins, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, outlasted Zenon Brown, of Arvada, Colorado, in a five hole playoff to win the 2012 Wells Fargo Nebraska Open. Both players had a share of the lead heading into the final round

and fired final round scores of three under-par, 68. Col-lins was able to make a par on their fifth play-off hole to capture the win in his first appearance at the Wells Fargo Nebraska Open. Jayson Brueggemann, of Lincoln, Nebraska, shot an even par 71 in his final round to finish at five over-par and win low amateur honors defeating Mike Siwa of Omaha, Ne-braska by one shot. Brueggemann made three birdies on his final nine holes to track down Siwa. Nebraska’s own John Hurley, of O’Neil, Nebraska, made a run up the leaderboard, but a couple of late bogey’s ended his chances to claim the title. Hurley fin-ished one shot out of the playoff at 10 under-par for the tourna-ment. Jim White, PGA MP, of Lin-coln, NE, shared the low round for the day at six under-par 65 and captured the Senior Division. The Wells Fargo Nebraska Open is endorsed and operat-ed by the Nebraska Section of the PGA and the Nebraska Golf Association and coordinated by Nebraska Public Power District. Its proceeds are donated to the Nebraska Community College Foundation, which awards scholar-ships to hundreds of needy Nebraska students attending five community colleges in the state. These colleges in-clude Central Community College, Columbus, Hastings & Grand Island; Southeast Community College; Lincoln, Milford & Beatrice; Northeast Community College, Nor-folk; Mid-Plains Community College, North Platte & McCook; and Western Nebraska Community College, Sidney & Scottsbluff. The Nebraska Open has raised over $1,000,000 in the last 20 years for the Nebraska Commu-nity College Foundation.

Matt Nice, PGA Wins 2012 Callaway Golf Match Play Championship

LINCOLN, Neb- The season long Callaway Golf Match Play Championship came to an end at Fire-thorn Golf Club with Matt Nice, PGA of the The Ridge Golf Club defeating defending champion, Jon Petersen, PGA of Tiburon Golf Club 5&4. Nice was able to take advantage of some terrific shots to build an early lead. Petersen was able to win the ninth hole with a great two-putt par but was unable to build off that mo-mentum. Nice was able to close the match on the 14th hole after hitting a terrific tee shot into the diffi-cult par three. Ryan Vermeer of Oak Hills Country Club finished in third place after defeating Scott Holly, PGA of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln 3&1 in the consolation match. Vermeer got off to a hot start but Holly was able to hang in there and keep it close for most of the match. The turning point of the match was when Vermeer looked like he was in trouble after finding the fair-way bunker after his second shot on the par five 11th, but was able to pull off a terrific shot by hitting his approach to six inches. That birdie put him two up in the match. Holly tried to claw his way back after winning the 16th hole but could not find the green on the difficult par three 17th hole. The Nebraska PGA would like to thank Todd Petersen of Callaway Golf for sponsoring this event for the second consecutive year and supporting the Nebraska PGA.
