The NIB Neatishead, Irstead and Barton Turf Parish Magazine THE BENEFICE OF St BENEDICT The Parishes of Ashmanhaugh, Barton Turf, Beeston St Lawrence, Horning, Irstead and Neatishead From your Parish Priest It has been encouraging to see an increase in church weddings in the benefice, and it has been a privilege to get to know our wedding couples as they have prepared for marriage, and married life together. The words of the preface, read at the beginning of the marriage service, explain both to the couple and to the congregation the Church’s understanding of Christian marriage. The promises tak en, the vows made, represent so much more than just a legal contract, and reflect a life-long commitment. On the wedding day, the focus is, of course, on the bride and groom, celebrating the beginning of their married life together. But the marriage service also has a message for the wider church community. In explaining marriage, the preface tells us that “Marriage is given that as man and woman grow together in love and trust, they shall be united with one another in heart, body and mind, as Christ is united with his bride, the Church”. The Church of course is the people, all of us, and our relationship with Christ is here likened to the marriage relationship. This idea implies that the Church - that’s you and me - is united with Christ in all aspects of our being heart, body, and mind. It’s echoed in the wonderful Gaelic poem which was translated to become the hymn St Patrick’s Breastplate: Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger. (St Patrick’s Breastplate, Mrs C F Alexander 1899) Notice too that the marriage service emphasises the dynamic nature of the relationship, as they “ grow together in love and trust”. The Church’s relationship with Christ needs to be similarly dynamic and progressing; our relationship with Christ, and with each other, needs always to be moving onward and deeper in love and trust. Towards the end of the marriage service, the prayers are not just for the newly married couple, but also for their community: “May the hospitality of their home bring refreshment an d joy to all around them; may their love overflow to neighbours in need and embrace those in distress” As Christ shares himself with his church, and we draw strength from his love, so we too are called to share that hospitality with the community which surrounds us, so that they too may share in that refreshment, that joy and that love. That is the Church’s calling; that is our calling. With every blessing. David ISSUE NO: 493 MAY 2019 Rector: The Rev’d David Smith 01692 630216 [email protected]

THE BENEFICE OF St BENEDICT The Parishes of Ashmanhaugh, Barton Turf, Beeston St Lawrence, Horning, Irstead and Neatishead

From your Parish Priest It has been encouraging to see an increase in church weddings in the benefice, and it has been a privilege to get to know our wedding couples as they have prepared for marriage, and married life together. The words of the preface, read at the beginning of the marriage service, explain both to the couple and to the congregation the Church’s understanding of Christian marriage. The promises taken, the vows made, represent so much more than just a legal contract, and reflect a life-long commitment. This idea implies that the Church - that’s you and me - is united with Christ in all aspects of our being – heart, body, and mind. It’s echoed in the wonderful Gaelic poem which was translated to become the hymn St Patrick’s Breastplate:

Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

(St Patrick’s Breastplate, Mrs C F Alexander 1899) Notice too that the marriage service emphasises the dynamic nature of the relationship, as they “grow together in love and trust”. The Church’s relationship with Christ needs to be similarly dynamic and progressing; our relationship with Christ, and with each other, needs always to be moving onward and deeper in love and trust. Towards the end of the marriage service, the prayers are not just for the newly married couple, but also for their community:

“May the hospitality of their home bring refreshment and joy to all around them; may their love overflow to neighbours in need and embrace those in distress”

As Christ shares himself with his church, and we draw strength from his love, so we too are called to share that hospitality with the community which surrounds us, so that they too may share in that refreshment, that joy and that love. That is the Church’s calling; that is our calling. With every blessing. David ISSUE NO: 493 MAY 2019

Life Explored – Discover the Greatest Gift in the Universe Life Explored is an informal seven-week course, for anyone who is looking for contentment and happiness in life. You don’t need to know anything about the Bible, and you won’t be expected to pray or sing. You can ask any question you like, or you can just sit and listen. Want to know more? Information is available on our website, www.neatisheadbaptist.org.uk/life, or you can email [email protected], phone David on 630216 or Ian 501094, or just turn up! Every Wednesday 1st May – 12th June, at Neatishead Baptist Church. Arrive 7.15pm onwards for tea/coffee and cake, the 1 hour sessions will start at 7.30pm. Ian Bloomfield St Swithin’s, Ashmanhaugh Firstly, I hope that you all enjoyed the many and varied services over the Lent and Easter period in all the churches of our benefice. There was certainly something for everyone. Having made a plea earlier in the year we have been very fortunate to have received some wonderful donations from our parishioners for the flowers at St Swithin’s. So please may I say a very heartfelt thank you. On the subject of flowers we are organising a Flower Festival this year in conjunction with the village hall committee. It will be held over the weekend of 20th/21st July so I hope as many of you as possible will be able to drop in. This is in lieu of the village fete, which we are not doing this year. Finally, I have been volunteering for the last 15 years at the East Norfolk Riding for Disabled Group. This group is 40 years old this year and they are running a special campaign seeking businesses, schools, individuals, or clubs to raise £40 for the group. I cannot tell you how much the children and adults gain from these sessions both physically and psychologically. Certainly, as a volunteer, it is one of the most fulfilling things that I do. If you or your organisation feels they can help please could you either contact me or Mrs Susan Thompson on [email protected]. Many thanks. Anne Mulhall, Church Warden, 01603 784874 [email protected] Barton Turf Methodist Church Barton Turf Methodist Church anniversary service will be held on Sunday 12th May at 3pm, lead by The Martham Singers. We will be pleased to see you. Sheila Yaxley St Benet’s coffee morning The April coffee morning was quiet due to the St. Benet's Abbey Celebrations but still raised £114.73 towards the upkeep of St Benedict's Church. The next one will be on Saturday 4th May from 10 to 11.30ish. Do come and enjoy this happy occasion, there will be homemade cakes, books, raffle and of course coffee and scones. Gillian Jeckells Women’s Institute We’re doing pretty well for 86 years old! Yes, our WI celebrated our birthday in March with a scrumptious tea – starting off with a glass of Buck’s fizz, followed by dainty sandwiches, smoked salmon canapés and a huge selection of home-made scones and cakes made and served by the Committee. Our speaker, Jane O’Donovan told us about the origins of Reflexology. This alternative medicine involves application of pressure to the feet and hands with specific thumb, finger, and hand techniques - to restore balance and harmony in the body and release tension. Practitioners say that it helps facilitate a deep state of relaxation, calm the emotions, and produce a serene mind - difficult to maintain when you knew that cake was on the menu! Later that week, a few members attended the Federation’s Centenary Annual Meeting at the Theatre Royal, where Pam Ayres was one of the speakers. Monica Riley, 630336

Christian Aid Ecumenical Service This will be held on Sunday, 12th May at 10.30 am at Neatishead Baptist Church. The theme this year is ‘All Mums Should Live’ and we will be hearing stories from Sierra Leone where Christian Aid is working with the country’s poorest communities to improve healthcare and ensure mothers don’t die in childbirth. St Benet’s Abbey: 1000 years! The celebrations are underway! The first big event of the 1000 years! celebrations was a great success. One hundred people came to Ludham Village Hall to hear four speakers giving talks as varied as ‘The wider landscape context of St Benet’s’ and ‘Pilgrimages and Picnics’. Despite the dull cold weather fifty people walked to the Abbey and were entertained by informal chats between the two professors. And the day ended with a welcome hot drink and homemade cake. Local people are coming forward to join in the fun of creating the community play ‘A Time to Gather Stones’ under the guidance of Parrabbola. If you are curious about it, there’s still time to get involved. You don’t have to be available for all the dates and the whole way it is being done is flexible and easy to fit in with. So watch out for more rehearsal dates and you can just pop in out of curiosity! The two play performances at the Abbey will be on Sunday 9th June and the best way to get there is by Mississippi Riverboat from Swan Green Horning. Tickets for the return trip are £10 and are available from Horning Post Office and Eventbrite after Easter. Cast members have priority to book for friends or family – so that’s a good reason to be in the play! The play itself is free to watch and the first scene will be on the Green, Horning continuing at St Benet’s, with the audience arriving either by boat or walking or cycling from Ludham Bridge. The play is a promenade performance and will involve walking up to 500 metres. The car park at the Abbey will be closed on the performance day 9th June and on 8th June for rehearsals. In order for everyone to have the chance to see the play, free evening performances will take place on 13th June (Ludham), 14th (Horning) and 15th (Neatishead). There will be an additional performance especially for school children. Timing will be announced soon. More details of all the events sponsored by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and organised by The Friends of St Benet’s Abbey are available on the News page of www.stbenetsabbey.org. However there are plenty more ways of celebrating thanks to Horning Church and the Community of St Benet’s, St Catherine’s Church Ludham, Horning Sailing Club and others. Look out for the flyer which lists all the events. Find out more on the St Benet’s Abbey Norfolk Broads Facebook page, Twitter @StBenetsAbbey or Instagram #stbenetsabbey. If you are interested in volunteering for The Friends of St Benet’s Abbey please contact the Chairman Trish Fitzmaurice on [email protected]. Anita Turpin

Neatishead Irstead and Barton Turf Community Heritage Group (NIBCHG) At the Farmers’ Market on Saturday 11th May there will be a display of archive photographs by the Women’s Institute, together with a small display on St Benet’s Abbey. Our meeting on Wednesday 15th May at Neatishead School, 7.30pm is a presentation by Marion Jackson on the history of St Benet’s Abbey – ghosts, betrayal, revolt and more. This year is an important anniversary – one thousand years since the Abbey’s foundation. The three manors of Horning, Ludham and Neatishead were given to the monastery by King Cnut in 1019. Today the medieval gatehouse and the ruins of the abbey church beside the River Bure are one of the most recognised landmarks in the Broads. Michael Brandon-Jones Car Boot at NVH Farmers’ Market The NVH Farmers' Market is expanding! We are now adding a locals' car boot on the grass area at NVH Farmers’ Market which is held every 2nd Saturday in the month. So booters, a great way to get rid of your unwanted goods, presents, tools etc. Please call Dolly on 536354 to book a pitch at £5. First come, first served as we are limiting the number to 10 each month. The first one will be held on Saturday 11th May 9am - 12 noon. Please do come along and see what is on offer inside and outside the hall, enjoy a bacon roll, have a chat over a tea or coffee with friends old and new in the hall where you can buy from a range of goods. Another new item of interest at the market will be a display from a different local group each month to show their activities past and present.

Sheila Yaxley Friends and Neighbours Club – 11th April 2019 – celebrating 50 years The Club was founded in 1969 for the over 60’s who met and still do on the second and fourth Thursday mornings of each month. The group was formed 50 years ago for the parishioners of Neatishead, Barton Turf and Irstead so they could meet over a cup of tea or coffee for a chat and to keep up with everyone’s news. The Club of course has developed over the years in many ways. We now meet in the New Victory Hall in Neatishead and have members from as far away as Norwich. A very modern and spacious eco-friendly building and we have 34 members ages ranging from 53 – 90 years old. We have various activities during the year, and each meeting starts with a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits and a chat. We have a very interesting speaker at most meetings. There is a trade table and a raffle to help with the club funds. During the year we have outings and at least one holiday. An annual Spring Fair and Harvest Festival with an auction of provisions is well attended. This year we are celebrating our 50th anniversary so our birthday lunch will be a very special occasion with Annie Slater and her jazz trio. In December we have our Christmas dinner another very special get-together. An event we will all look forward to. Our club has a good caring friendly atmosphere. If you would like to come along and join us, we would welcome more members both men and women, come along and take a look. WISE Ladies For our April meeting in the NVH we had Helen McFadyen guide us in making an Easter flower arrangement. Thank you, Helen for your inspiration. We are looking forward to our May meeting when we will be doing the hidden history tour in Norwich. Lesley Smith Gardening Club We held our annual dinner at the March meeting and thanks go to Susan for organising a quiz when our speaker had to cancel due to illness. Our next meeting is on Monday 20th May when Charles Lewis is giving an illustrated talk entitled ‘Tulip Mania’! We will be holding a plant sale at this meeting for Club funds so please bring along any seedlings, plants, etc which you can spare. We were very sad to lose another of our members in March. Jeanne Lawrence was a quiet but very accomplished lady who certainly knew her plants! Along with other Club members I was privileged to attend Jeanne’s Service of Thanksgiving and learn more of her wonderful life. Our thoughts are with Roy and family at this time. Please contact me if you want any information about the Gardening Club. Jane King, 630002

Wildlife notes The juvenile Long-Tailed duck hung around on Barton Broad and was still there on the 8th April, much later than expected. On one day in late March my garden feeders were visited by a Nuthatch, a bird that I see infrequently in my garden, apart from one summer a few years ago when I had a pair visiting almost daily. Sadly they did not stay and although there has often been a pair resident at Irstead over the years I do not see them that often. This spring I have been watching a pair at the boardwalk taking nesting material into a hole on the side of an Oak tree where a small branch has broken off. Nuthatches are known to line the outside of the nest hole with mud to make sure the entrance hole is the right size (and to keep predators out) and are one of the few birds who can feed whilst going downwards on a tree trunk rather than upwards as a Treecreeper generally does. The Nuthatch is a very smart looking bird with blue-grey upper parts and head, buff-orange under parts, a black eye stripe and a white face with a long black bill. They are 14cm long, weigh just 24gms, have a wide variety of loud calls and songs and are very territorial. They are a species that are doing well in England and Wales and since the 1980s have been expanding their range northwards into Scotland although they are completely absent from Ireland. They do not migrate and ringing recoveries have shown that they do not move very far. I would be interested to hear from residents of our villages who have Nuthatches visiting their gardens to gauge how many resident birds we have. My camera nest box has resident Blue Tits again and I have been watching the nest being built over the last few weeks although the female seems to continue to add nest material even after the first eggs have been laid. I first noticed eggs on the 11th April this year and as I write this 3 days later there are at least 10 eggs present, significantly earlier than last year when it was the 3rd May before that number had been laid (due I suspect to the Beast from the East). By the beginning of May the majority of our migrant birds should have arrived and either passed through or set up territories. Look out for Spotted Flycatchers, the last to arrive in your gardens, and Black Terns passing through the broads. Jerry Simpson, 630674, [email protected] Go Wild at Barton Turf – 12th May 2019 Bring all of the family along for a fun-packed day out at Barton Turf Adventure Centre on Sunday 12th May. Try something a bit different with a wild variety of activities, including boat trips, minibeast hunting and ditch dipping. Opening at 11am and running until 4pm, this event will give you and the family the opportunity to learn about the wonderful wildlife of the Broads whilst having plenty of fun. Listen to tales of the wild, have a go at natural crafting, or take to the Broads on a canoe trail, motor cruiser or sailing trip. Entry to the event and parking is free, but there will be a small charge for some of the activities, such as the boat trips and worm charming competition. There is no need to book, just come along and make the most of what the day has to offer! Refreshments available. Find us down Staithe Road, Barton Turf, NR12 8AZ.. A big thank you to you all. Shirley Hogan John Yaxley – a longstanding resident of Barton Turf from 1928 to 2019. John loved his family life and was a faithful Methodist with many good attributes. His talents and local knowledge were shared with and experienced by many local people, and by people visiting the area. He appeared in the EDP and Local Talk magazine, and he himself wrote a book about the history of Barton Turf life ‘A Jam around Barton’ which is still for sale from Barton Turf Parish Church. There was never a bad word spoken by him, although some found it difficult to understand his strong Norfolk accent. He was very humble in that he never boasted about his skills or handiwork, and invariably spent endless hours making wooden items to perfection for those who asked him. He was loyal to the community, helping out and joining in the local branch of the British Legion, Gardening club, Friends and Neighbours, attending most Parish Council meetings and sharing his memories with the local Historical group, amongst others. As many friends have quoted – it’s an end of an era for the community, but his memory will remain with all those who had the privilege of meeting and working with him. Diane Bradley John Yaxley, who has died at the age of 91, was one of the iconic men of Norfolk. He and Sheila, newly married, lived in the cottage next to us on The Common, later moving to Staithe House in the 60’s. Born in the village, John lived all his life here in Barton Turf, as did many of his family before him. John was a man of great humility, a man who knew who he was and a man of great talent. He was a master craftsman, a boat builder, carpenter, sign-writer, wood carver, toy maker and model maker. He was an author (‘A Jam Round Barton Turf’ and ‘75 years of Landamore’s’), a painter and poet. He was a lifelong Methodist and a Steward at the Chapel for 60 years. All of us who walk down Staithe Road will remember him too, as a distinguished, award winning, master gardener. He was ‘a lovely man’, ‘a real Norfolk Broadsman’ with the broadest of Norfolk accents, a legend in his lifetime. He will be missed by us all. Shelagh Smith Thanks I would like to thank everyone for coming to support my family at John’s funeral, also for all the support, kindness and donations over the last few weeks.
