PRESIDENT’S LETTER
2013 was another successful year for Unit 106, the North Jersey Bridge Association. Participation at the Sectionals remained strong, and slightly exceeded that of the previous year. It is not an acci-dent that we remain healthy, but a result of the Board and the many Committee members who vol-unteer their time and talents. We are also fortunate to have a number of excellent bridge clubs that offer multiple times and locations where bridge players can indulge their passion. Special thanks should go to Stasha Cohen, who has served as President for the past three years. She has worked with all Board Members to insure a coordinated effort and group success. Stasha will remain in an advisory capacity, and will also be working on a specific project. We also want to thank Sue Green and Larry Ascher for their dedicated years of service on the Board. 2014 will be marked with a disruption to our normal schedule. Guardian Angel in Allendale will be undergoing some renovations to the Church building, which will cause them to shift their normal ac-tivities to the auditorium that we use. Several Board members pursued alternative sites, but we could not find a suitable arrangement. Thus, our usual April Sectional must be cancelled. The tradi-tional September and November Sectionals are not affected. While we lose the April Sectional, the Bob Johnke Team Event will be held on Saturday, April 5 at Christ Church in Ridgewood. This is a great bridge tournament, and has also been noted for the high quality of the catered meals which are subsidized by the Unit. We urge all teams to sign up early. On a personal note, I want to thank the Nominating Committee and Board for placing their confi-dence in me. I intend to work with, and learn from, the many dedicated members of Unit 106.

This ‘n That From Your District Director
As we begin another year, I look to
continuing to work with all of you to make
District 3 the shining star of the ACBL.
At the ACBL Board meetings in Phoenix
in November we elected a new president,
Phyllis Harlan from District 15, an Okla-
homa City resident, who has been an ac-
tive and productive member of the Board
for a number of years. I have served on
several committees with Phyllis and have a
very high regard for her dedication and her
competence.
We continue to be very pleased with
the leadership of our new – since late 2011
– CEO, Robert Hartman. An interesting
sidelight, Robert was so impressed with
the success of The Longest Day in raising
money for the Alzheimers Association, he
ran in the Chicago marathon to raise even
more money for the cause.
The board voted unanimously to ex-
tend the ban on smoking at national tour-
naments to cover electronic smoking de-
vices. For now this ban only applies to
national tournaments, but it is clearly an
issue that should be addressed at the dis-
trict and unit levels as well.
Five key initiatives were approved for
2014:
1. Online learn to play bridge. This will
be launched with a general marketing
campaign and the results will be
tracked.
2. Win-Win membership incentives.
This will replace the current system
and will reward members for success
in recruitment. It will be open to all
members and teachers.
3. Membership recognition program.
This will reward members based on
both rank achievements and years of
membership.
4. OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Insti-
tute). Funded by the Bernard Osher
Foundation, this program will help
fund lifelong teaching programs.
5. Bridge at college. A program to en-
courage organized bridge programs at
the college and university level.
Of interest to all of you is the change in
membership dues; as of April 1, 2014, new
member dues will increase from $28 to
$29, and regular one year dues will in-
crease from $37 to $39. There will be no
increase in Junior or Patron memberships.
In addition, tournament sanction fees will
be increased by 1.5% beginning April 1,
2014.
The Board also overwhelmingly ap-
proved a new Youth Protection and Abuse
Prevention Policy. We felt strongly that
this was long overdue.
Our Winter Regional Tournament will
now be the Joan Gerard District 3 Winter
Regional. A formal renaming of this tour-
nament and to celebrate Joan’s hard work
and devotion to the District will be held on
January 19. I hope many of you are able
to attend this event.
I am now getting ready to attend your
Annual Meeting, and would like to take
this opportunity to thank Stasha Cohen for
her hard work in keeping Unit 106 a top
Unit in ACBL. I am proud to be a part of
this Unit.
I look forward to seeing you all at the
tables.

Opening Lead - king of Clubs
Assume you get to four spades and West leads three rounds of clubs. You ruff the third club, enter dummy
with a diamond to the king and return a trump, finessing the queen. This loses to the king, and you later
lose another trump trick to the go down one.
If, by any chance you played the hand this way, you played it incorrectly. You could have make the con-
tract by leading the ace and a low spade instead of taking a finesse. West would win your low spade with
the king, and, whatever he returned, you would pick up East’s last spade with your queen and make the
contract.
It could be argued that this line of play is easy enough if you see all 52 cards. But the fact is that the hand
should be played this way without that advantage. The reason lies in the bidding. In Standard American
methods, a player holding six or more points must respond to his partner’s opening bid of one of a suit.
This is because the opener could have as many as 20 points, and possibly even more on occasion.
In the present case, there is no reason to think that East violated that rule when he passed West’s opening
bid. So after East shows up with the Q-J-10 of clubs on the first three plays, South should assume that East
does not have the king of spades.
Once it is granted that West has the king of spades, it can’t be right to finesse the queen. Nothing can be
gained, and much can be lost, by doing so. Declarer should reason that if West has three (or more) spades
to the king, the contract cannot be made. He should therefore play for his one and only chance, namely,
that West was dealt the doubleton king of spades.
