The 22nd

Annual Report (2018-19) of Dr. N. G. P. Arts and Science College

highlights comprehensively the overall academic activities, Research and

Development achievements, New Initiatives, Awards/Recognitions of students

and staff members in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. It also

glimpse the Placement triumphs made by the students with the support of

Stakeholders, Deans, HoDs, and Staff Members. We work as a team to bring

Good afternoon to the august gathering, for the 22nd

College Day and Sports Day

Celebrations. My heartiest wishes and welcome to the respected and dynamic Shri. J. Sujith

Kumar, Founder and Managing Trustee - Maatram Foundation, Chennai and Associate Vice

President – HR – Infosys, Chennai. A man of discipline and action in nature our Honorable

Chairman of KMCH and Dr. N.G.P. Educational institutions, Dr. Nalla G Palaniswami a

guiding spirit and the motivator behind the success of our institution, beloved Madam

Secretary, Dr. Thavamani D. Palaniswami, vibrant Managing Trustee Dr.Arun N

Palaniswami, Dr. O.T. Bhuvaneswaran, CEO, Dr. P.R. Muthusamy, Director Academics of

Dr. N. G. P. Educational Institutions, Deans, Head of various departments, faculty fraternity

and my dear students. I feel delighted in welcoming you all to this 22nd

Annual Day and

Sports Day celebrations.

Dr. N.G.P. Arts and Science College is an organization of KMCRET which was

established in the year 1997 under the leadership of our Chairman Dr. Nalla G. Palaniswami,

and Madam Secretary Dr. Thavamani D. Palaniswami. The Institution has begun with four

Under Graduate programmes namely B.Sc. Biochemistry, B.Sc. Computer Science, B.Com.

and B.B.M. with a student strength of 78 and 9 Staff members. The institution has grown

from strength to strength and presently offers 27 UG courses, 14 PG courses and 12 research

programmes (M.Phil./Ph.D.). At present, 7068 students are pursuing their graduate, post-

graduate and research programme at our campus. We are enriched with dedicated 310 Staff

members to guide and motivate the energetic young minds. In addition, we have 75

administrative and technical staff to assist the students with their needs.

The College has been recognized under 2(f) and 12(B) by UGC, New Delhi. The

University Grants Commission, New Delhi has conferred autonomous status from the

Academic year 2015-16. The college was re-accredited by NAAC with "A" Grade with

CPGA score of 3.17. Our Institution was ranked in national level respectively the 44th

and

91st rank in the year 2017 and 2018 by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF),

Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), New Delhi. It is a proud moment for

the third consecutive year we are in top 100 ranks of NIRF. Our Principal will receive the

Ranking certification from the Honorable President of India at Vigyan Bhavan on April 8,

2019.

NEW PROGRAMMES

We paved the foundation in promoting the current trends of Industry Revolution 4.0

during the academic year 2018-19 by offering the industry linked curriculum in the Faculty of

Commerce, Programmes like B.Com. Accounting & Taxation, B.Com. International

Business and M.Sc. Physics in Faculty of Basic and Applied Sciences stream have been

started.

FEE CONCESSION

Our Management is very keen in supporting students of economically backward

section to bring out their academic and sports excellence by contributing a sum of Rs. 2

crores as a fee concession / scholarship during the academic year 2018-19.

NATIONAL PROGRAMME ON TECHNOLOGY ENHANCED LEARNING

(NPTEL)

The Institution offers Value Added Courses with an aim to provide platform for skill

oriented technical training and to bridge the skill gaps and mold students industry ready.

Our college has secured 92nd

position in NPTEL local chapter ranking among 2250

colleges across India. Four of our staff members and 2 of our students secured the top rank in

NPTEL examinations.

On-line courses under NPTEL, Spoken Tutorial, Free MOOC Courses, and

SWAYAM are offered to our students through our Center for Digital Learning. More than

4040 staff members and students from our college have been benefited as given below.

430 students registered in Spoken Tutorial, IIT Bombay

160 Staff members completed Free MOOC Examination,

2680 Students completed Free MOOC online Exam

60 Staff members and 410 students completed NPTEL Online Exam in the academic

year 2018-19 Odd Semester

Totally 760 NPTEL enrollments in even semester

EXAMINATION RESULTS

In the recently held Comprehensive Examinations in November 2018, 87 % of our PG

students and 86 % UG students have successfully cleared.

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

Seven Day Faculty Development Programme (FDP) was organized by the Faculty

Development Cell with the sponsorship of our Management on Quality Measures in Higher

Education during December 3-9, 2018. The FDP sheltered 250 in house participants and 30

outside participants from various colleges in and around Tamil Nadu to extend their

perception on OBE model Curriculum designing and NAAC documentation.

MEMBERSHIP IN ACADEMIC BODIES

The Academic expertise of our staff members has been extended to other institutions both

regionally and nationally as given below:

Acted as BoS members in various college and Universities.

Dr.V.Rajendran, Principal has been appointed as a NAAC Assessor to accredit the

colleges / Universities all over India by NAAC Bangalore.

Dr.V.Rajendran, Principal and Dr.B.Rosiline Jeetha, Co-ordinator, IQAC has been

invited as a peer perception review member in NIRF ranking.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

In order to promote research activities among staff and students, the Management has

initiated the in-house funding namely Seed money, Student Start up projects, research

incentives/ honorarium, travel grant support etc. To promote inter disciplinary and quality

research, the research advisory/steering committee guides the staff in identifying suitable

funding agency to submit their research proposals for funding. We have received a total grant

of sum of Rs. 3.53/- crores through projects, schemes, seminars, conferences and workshops

from various funding agencies like UGC, DRDO, ICMR, ICSSR, CSIR, DST, DBT and

TNSCST.

RESEARCH PROJECT

The following staff members have received funds from various funding agencies:

Dr.V.Rajendran, Principal has received an International Project from DST,

Government of India, and DAAD, Germany known as DST-DAAD, PPP project with

a cost of Rs.3.7 lakhs.

Dr.S.Namasivayam, Professor and Head, Department of Business Process Service

has received Rs.4,90,000 for Minor project from ICSSR-IMPRESS.

A sum of Rs. 3,50,000 was received by Dr.A.Lakshmi Priya, Assistant Professor of

Banking and Insurance , for a Minor project from ICSSR-IMPRESS.

Dr. C. Venkatesan, Associate Professor of Biochemistry, has received a sum of Rs.

1,72,500 for organizing a workshop from Science Academies, Bangalore.

Dr.S.Balasubramanian, Dean, Research & Development, and Dr. V.

Shanmugaraju, Dean, Student Affairs, have received a Minor project from DBT,

New Delhi with a cost of Rs. 75,000.

To organize a workshop, Dr.R.Sowrirajan and Dr.S.Eswaramoorthi, Assistant

professors of Mathematics department, have received a sum of Rs. 15,000 from CSIR.

Assistant Professor of Nutrition and Dietetics, Dr.S.Daniel Robert has received a

project from MPOB with a sum of Rs. 12,000.

Dr. P. Chidambara Rajan and Ms.V.Harshini of Biotechnology have received a

project from TNSCST with a cost of Rs. 7,500.

A project was received by Dr. K. Rajathi Asst. Prof. of Biochemistry and Ms. M.

Muthu bharathi of II M.Sc. Biochemistry from TNSCST with a sum of Rs. 7,500.

Dr. F. Mary Magdalene Jane and Ms. M. Pavithra, Ms. A. Shameena, Ms. S.

Yashini of Computer Science department have received a sum of Rs. 7,500 for a

project from TNSCST.

Mr. M. Rajakrishnan and Ms. C. P. Nayana, Ms.V. Subashri have received a

project from TNSCST with a cost of Rs. 7,500.

DBT – STAR SCHEME

The Ministry of Science and Technology (DST) through the Department of

Biotechnology has identified our College as one of the DBT- STAR Colleges with a grant - in

- aid of a sum of Rs. Eighty lakhs for a period of 3 years. The department of Microbiology,

Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Food Science and Nutrition are the participating

departments in the above programme. The above scheme aims to promote basic science,

graduate research and new learning mechanism.Dr. S. S. Sudha, is the overall programme

Co-ordinator, Prof.S.Senthil Prabhu, Dr. Indhumathi, Dr. Poongothai, and Dr. Uma

Maheswari are the respective department Co-ordinators.

CLUSTER OF DBT STAR SCHEME COLLEGES

First of its kind in India, under the DBT- STAR Scheme, the cluster of DBT star

scheme college is formed to promote the UG research, products, innovations and B2B by

organizing National Conference on Graduate Research, known as NCGR-19.

ACADEMIC FELLOWSHIPS

Dr. V. Shanmugaraju, Dean - Students Affairs and Dr.K.Girija, Assistant Professor

in Department of Physics were awarded Summer Fellowship by Science Academies,

Bangalore to execute their research at National North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong and

Anna University, Chennai, respectively.

ENTREPRENEUR AWARENESS CAMP

Dr. S. Saravanan, Dean- Administration received Rs.40,000 /- from DST - NIMAT

to organize Entrepreneurial Awareness camps to motivate the young minds as entrepreneurs

under the umbrella of Entrepreneur Development Cell.

RESEARCH PAPER PUBLICATIONS

More than 83 papers were published by our Staff Members in various refereed

National / International Peer reviewed reputed journals.

BOOK PUBLICATIONS

Prof. Dr. V. Rajendran has published a book on Engineering Physics, McGraw-

Hill Education

Dr. R. Chandrasekaran, Assistant Prof. of Commerce with Finance published a

book entitled Introduction to Investment Management, Kongunadu Publishers,

Erode.

Dr. A. Muthusamy and Prof. D. Maheshwari , Assistant Professors, Department of

Computer Technology have published a book on " Dot Net Core for C Sharp

Beginners" Chess Educational Publishers.

PATENT / COPYRIGHT

Prof. V. Rajendaran received a Patent for his invention on Nanoparticles for

Agricultural Applications.

Dr. D. Sridevi received Copyright for her Invention on Unlocked Pages of PCOS.

A sum of Rs. 1,26,260/- has been generated by our Staff and Students towards

Consultancy through various Industries and institutions.

AWARDS, PRIZES AND RECOGNITIONS

Many of our staff members received recognitions from various national level bodies.

Five Staff members namely, Mr. M.Rajakrishnan, Commerce CA, Ms. M.Rathi and

Dr.R.Rajeswari, Department of Computer Technology Dr.N.Kannikaparameswari,

Biochemistry, Dr. J. Lilly, Information Technology, Dr. J. Renga Ramanujam,

Microbiology, Mrs. M. Shanmugavadivu, Biotechnology have cleared SET/NET conducted

by NTA, New Delhi.

AWARD OF Ph.D.

12 staff members of our college have been awarded Ph.D. during the academic year 2018-

19.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

Through the able guidance of our staff, our students extended Community and Health

services for the benefit of the society.

TRAINING AND PLACEMENT

Our training programs are focused towards the holistic development of students and to

hone their expertise in technical, aptitude as well as soft skills.

The Training and Placement Cell train and mould the U.G and P.G students to meet

the industrial needs.

Training and Placement Cell facilitates to achieve 97% of our Students to get placed

in reputed companies.

Out of 1400 students, 1354 were placed in the year 2018-2019.

Students got placed in 34 companies which include 20 MNC and 14 Non-MNC.

The placement readiness programs such as BEC and VERSANT impart soft skills to

students.

We thank eminent recruiters like INFOSYS, WIPRO, TATA, COGNIZANT, IBM,

etc.

CLUB ACTIVITIES

45 clubs are functioning in different categories namely Academic, Research and

Development and Extracurricular to develop the students’ character and team building.

The active participation is encouraged by means of conducting various competitions.

NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME (NSS)

The NSS of our college is functioning with 3 units (300 NSS volunteers), with an aim

of serving the community, headed by Dr.S.Namasivayam, Ms.K.S.Nithiyaa and

Mr.B.Narasimhan programme officers.

The NSS volunteers extend their Community Service in the areas such as FOP,

Awareness Camp, Blood Group Identification and Blood Donation Camps.

The Special Camp with the support of Bharathiar University was held in the adopted

villages such as Veeriampalayam, Kaikolampalayam and Karupparayanpalayam

for 7 days with 150 volunteers.

Swachh Bharath – A Summer Internship Camp was conducted in the adopted

village, Thadagam.

Mr. D. Manoj of II BCA, NSS Volunteer has received fifth place from the left

marker in the National Level Republic Day Parade held at New Delhi on 26th

January, 2019.

Ms. T. Sowndarya of II B.Sc. Maths CA, NSS Volunteers has received fourth place

in the first right marker in the State Level Republic Day Parade held at Chennai

on 26th

January, 2019.

Ms. G. Harini, II-B.Sc. Computer Science, has participated in the National Inter-

cultural camp at Thiruvandram, Kerala.

Mr.K.Lokesh, II B.Sc. Computer Science and Ms. R. Sandhiya, II B.Sc. Bio

Chemistry have participated in the National Integration Camp, Mangalore.

22nd ANNUAL SPORTS REPORT

Good afternoon to one and all present here. It is my privilege to stand before you on

behalf of Department of physical education Dr. N.G.P Arts and Science College and my own

behalf to present the Annual Sports Report for the academic year 2018-19. Dr.N.G.P is

known for Nurturing sports and many sports men have propagated to the distinction of state

level, national level and also to the International arena. The Department of Physical

Education is very proud to say that through the sports of Dr.N.G.P many of our students have

prospered in their life.

During the academic year 2018-2019, 55 sports quota seats have been granted with

100% free education and accommodation for the categories like Volleyball men, Hockey

men, Kabaddi men, Table Tennis men, Ball Badminton Men and Athletics Men & Women.

The contribution of the Management towards sports is Rs. 1 Crore. In total 105 sports

students are pursuing studies in the college.

This kind of support has enabled us to achieve more at University level & National

level tournaments. We proudly say that,

We are the Champions in Bharathiar University intercollegiate Hockey tournament for

men consecutively for sixth time held at Vidyasagar College of Arts and Science,

Udumalpet.

Our college has Secured Winner Position in Bharathiar University intercollegiate Kabaddi

men tournament at Kumaraguru College of Liberal Arts & Science College, Coimbatore.

Our eminent men Athletes has secured overall second position in Bharathiar University

inter-collegiate athletic championship and the women athletes has secured third place

held at Nehru Stadium, Coimbatore.

Our College has won Second Place in Bharathiar University intercollegiate tournaments

of Cross Country women, Ball badminton women, and Taekwondo men. Further it has

got Third positions in Ball Badminton men, Tennis Women, and Fourth Place in Table

Tennis men, Cross Country men.

BEYOND THE TERRITORY OF BHARATHIAR UNIVERSITY

Our college Volleyball team has won runner position in open state level tournaments held

at Thanjavur, and state level intercollegiate KCT Trophy held at Coimbatore.

The Hockey team has won second place in state level Hockey Tournament at Arul

Andavar College, Madurai.

The Kabaddi men team put their remarkable achievements by secure in Third place in

state level open tournaments held at Thrichy and Coimbatore.

The men Badminton team has attained Third place in state level inter collegiate

tournament at Sri Krishna Arts and Science college.

The Ball Badminton Women team has achieved winner title in District level tournament.

APART FROM THE TEAM EVENTS

Mr.T. Jeevan Kumar of I B. Sc CS has won Gold medal in 4X100mts Relay, Mr. M.

Karthikeyan of II B. Sc IT has received Silver medal in 100mts and Mr. B. Gaurav Yadav

of III BCOM BI has got Bronze Medal in 4X400mts Relay in Junior National

ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP HELD AT RANCHI

Similarly, Mr.T.Jeevan Kumar of I B. Sc CS has bagged gold medal in 4X400mts relay

and silver medal in 400mts, Mr. C.Gopinath of II BA Eng has secured two Bronze medals

in 110mts hurdles and 4X100mts relay and Mr. A. Mukesh Kumar of I B. Com Finance

has got bronze medal in Hammer Throw in the South Zone Athletics Championship at

Guntur, Andhra Pradesh.

In the category of Khelo India Youth Sports, Mr.M. Karthikeyan of II BSC IT has won

Silver medal in 4X100mts Relay and Mr.B. Gaurav Yadav of III B. COM BI has won

Silver medal in 4X400mts Relay and received the cash prize of Rs. 75, 000/- from

Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

Our NGPians has marked the name of Dr. N.G.P. at All India Inter University levels in

various games are as follows.

Mr. B. Gaurav Yadav of III B.Com, Mr. M. Karthikeyan of II B.Sc IT, Mr. T. Jeevan

Kumar of I B.sc CS, Ms. S. Keerthika of I M.A Eng, Ms. L. Samya Sri of II B.Com and

Ms. P. Vani of II B.Sc F&N have represented Bharathiar university by participating in

All India Inter University Athletic Meet, held at Mangalore University, Karnataka.

Ms. V. Sonia of II M.Com IB and Ms. V. Gokila of I BPS have participated in All India

Inter University Cross Country Race held at Gulbarga University, Karnataka.

Mr. S. Vinothkumar of II B. Sc CS has participated in All India Inter University Ball

Badminton Tournament held at SRM University, Chennai.

Ms. N. Sangeetha of II M.com, Ms. M. Jamuna of II M.Sc Maths and Ms. M. Kaviya of

III BSC IT have participated in All India Inter University Ball Badminton Tournament

held at Krishna University, Andhra Pradesh.

Mr. Rexin Kingsly of I B. Sc CAT, Mr. S. Silverstalin of I M. Com IB, Mr. G. Joeshp

of I B.Sc CAT and Mr. P. Jagadish of I B. Sc CAT have participated in All India Inter

University Hockey Tournament held at NHTS, New Delhi.

Ms. N. Sangeetha of II M. Com has participated in All India Inter University Tennis

IN STATE LEVEL CHIEF MINISTER TROPHY

Mr. J. Ashwinkumar of II BBA CA and Mr. V. Sri Dinesh of I B. Com IB have secured

the Winner position in State level Chief Minister Volleyball Trophy –held at Chennai and

received a cash prize of Rs.1lakhs each.

Ms. K. Dharani Shri of II B. Sc Physics has secured Third Place in State level Chief

Minister Trophy – Ball Badminton held at Chennai and received a cash prize of Rs.

50,000/-.

Mr. John Jacob of I B. Com has secured Bronze medals in 110mts Hurdles in State level

Chief Minister Trophy held at Trichy and received a cash prize of Rs. 50, 000/-.

IN THE EVENT OF MARATHON

Ms. V. Sonia of II M.com IB was achieved many laurels and add glory to our college by

winning state level open competitions.

She won winner titles in Chennai Marathon, Bangalore Mid-Night Marathon, Wipro

Marathon, Vodafone Marathon, VG Hospital Marathon and Edappadi Marathon.

Our College Sports Day Celebration was held on 8th

March 2019. The Overall Group

Championship for Students goes to Ruby House with 114 Points and Individual

Championship for Men goes to Mr. A. Rijo III B.Com CS CA of Ruby house and Individual

Championship for Women goes to Ms. A. Kowshika of I B.Sc Maths of Diamond House.

Committee Member to Select Members for the Bharathiar University Cross country men and

Women Team for Represent All India Inter University Cross country meet.

National Service Scheme (NSS) : Annexure XII

The National Service Scheme of our college has been offering a great service to the society.

We have 3 units headed by Dr.S.Namasivayam, Ms.K.S.Nithiyaa and Mr.B.Narasimhan.

Our college has 300 NSS volunteers who were participating in various community services.

Traffic is regulated in front of our college. We have conducted Blood Group Identification

and Blood Donation Camps. More than 100 units of blood have been donated. Awareness

Programmes were conducted on Drug Abuse, Road Safety, Women Empowerment, Disaster

Management, Swachatta App and AIDS. Swachh Barath Summer Internship Camp conducted

in the adopted village, Thadagam. The Special Camp was held in Veeriampalayam,

Kaikolampalayam and Karupparayanpalayam villages for 7 days with 150 volunteers.

Our Volunteers involved in various activities like Temple and School Cleaning, Planting

Saplings, Plastic and Partheeniam Eradication, Medical Camp, Personality Development

Programmes and Awareness Programmaes on Health, AIDS, Dengue, First Aid, Environment

and Awareness on Digital India during the camp. We have visited and offered service to the

World Peace Foundation home at Padhuvampalli.

Our College NSS Volunteers Mr.D.Manoj of II-BCA has been a fifth place from the left

marker in the National Level Republic Day Parade held at New Delhi.

Our College NSS Volunteers Ms.T.Sowndarya of II-B.Sc. Maths CA has been a fourth place

in the first right marker in the State Level Republic Day Parade held at Chennai.

Ms.G.Harini, II-B.Sc. CS, has participated in the National inter-cultural camp at

Thiruvandram, Kerala. Mr.K.Lokesh, II-B.Sc.CS and Ms.R.Sandhiya, II-B.Sc. Bio

Chemistry have participated in the National Integration Camp, Mangalore.

Red Ribbon Club and Blood Donors Club

Red Ribbon Club and Blood Donors Club are effectively functioning under the Programme

Officer Dr.S.Namasivayam. The Clubs are doing wonderful service in creating awareness on

AIDS, Blood Donation, Dengue, Drug Abuse Awareness and Health to the society. It has

organized Blood Group Identification Programme and Blood Donation Camp was organized

with HDFC Bank and Government Hospital, Coimbatore. More than 100 units of Blood

donated during the camp.

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The Department of Physical Education of Dr. N.G.P. Arts and Science College is well known for

promoting sports and games with the Motto of bringing Educated Citizens with good physical frame

for the well being of society and nation. The department functions with a Mission to inculcate the

competitiveness and sportsmanship in a consistent mode to take our Nation

Possessing resources can be a pride for ordinary but availing the resources for exploration in the field

of Sports and Games at University level, State level, National level and also international level has

been the benchmark of our Department.

In the academic year 2018-2019, 55 sports quota seats have been granted with 100% free education

and accommodation for the categories Volleyball men, Hockey men, Kabaddi men, Table Tennis

men, Ball Badminton Men, Basketball and Athletics Men & Women. The contribution of the

Management towards sports is around Rs. 1 Crore. Right now 103 sports seats have been allocated

totally.

The College Hockey team secured winners title at “SIXTH TIME” in Bharathiyar University Inter

Collegiate Our Hockey men team triumph over the title by Winning First Position in Bharathiar
