About the Norwin Community

Norwin isn’t a place…It’s a state of mind! You won’t find “Norwin” on any map.

that’s because it’s not the formal name of any location in this area. Norwin is comprised of three municipalities: irwin, North irwin and North Huntingdon. The word “Norwin” is just a short name for these three towns that make up one great area.

irwin has retained its main-street persona and old-fashioned neighborhood charm. this atmosphere has drawn in a diverse collection of businesses offering a wide variety of choices for shopping and dining. Many scheduled events throughout the year fill Irwin’s Downtown district.

North huntingdon township has seen a surge of development, both commercial and residential over the last decade; however, this community has retained a close-knit ambiance. There is something for everyone with many places to worship or shop, wonderful parks for recreation and an excellent educational system for learning. North Huntingdon Township is conveniently located with access to both the urban setting of pittsburgh and the countryside of the Laurel highlands.

t he Norwin Chamber of Commerce was established in 1942 and has been serving businesses and the community-at-large for more than 70 years.

Instituted first in Irwin as a business association, the Norwin Chamber expanded in 1958 to include North Huntingdon and now also represents businesses in locations such as Penn Township, Jeannette, Greensburg, Latrobe, Belle Vernon, West Newton, Monroeville and Pittsburgh. We like to say “we serve Airport to Airport”.

The Norwin Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit organization dedicated to furthering the growth and establishment of the Norwin community as a superior location in which to live, work and conduct business. All sizes and types of businesses are represented and members range from the sole-proprietor and home-based business to large health care facilities, banks and manufacturers.

member benefitsMembership in the Norwin Chamber of Commerce offers an outstand-ing way to become involved in business networking, advocacy, eco-nomic development, and community growth. The Norwin Chamber constantly develops and refines our programs to better serve our diverse membership and the surrounding communities’ needs.

C.A.R.E. (Chamber Associates Referral Exchange) Networking Group – is FREE and exclusively for Norwin Chamber members. C.A.R.E. meets every other Thursday morning from 7:30a.m. – 8:30a.m. at the Chamber office. Each participant has an opportunity to give their 30-second commercial and is scheduled to be a speaker of the week. Referrals within the group and the Norwin Chamber are discussed. Each week a different business topic is discussed.

Chamber Website – keeps members up-to-date on all Norwin Cham-ber and community information. The website includes a complete and current listing of our membership directory including direct links to members’ websites. Also included is a calendar of events with the ability to RSVP, community information and statistics, newsletter archives, membership information, a Speakers Bureau listing, local job openings and a photo gallery of events.

Chamber VocalPoint Newsletter – is published monthly and mailed directly to the membership. This newsletter includes an upcoming calendar of events, pictures and reviews of previous functions, reviews of various members and their businesses, member kudos and more. Members can place their advertisements in the newsletter itself or insert a flier for a larger advertisement. VocalPoint Newsletters are archived on the Chamber’s website.

Chamber Weekly E-newsletter through Constant Contact – is emailed to the membership and news media every Monday afternoon. These weekly emails remind members of upcoming events and RSVP deadlines, referrals that have happened between Norwin Chamber members, and any other pertinent information for that week.

Advertising and Sponsorship opportunities are available via ads in the VocalPoint Newsletter, membership directory/community resource guide and event programs. Sponsorship levels are offered for all main events held throughout the year such as the Annual Dinner and Business Expo, Golf Outing, Sample Norwin and Norwin Community Picnic. Chamber Superstar sponsorships offer a one time yearly con-tribution to enable sponsorship for all major Norwin Chamber events. Cost effective advertising and other sponsorships are available for businesses small and large.

Certificates of Origin – A Certificate of Origin is a document required by foreign governments that validates the country of origin where a product was manufactured. The certificate of origin must be signed by the exporter, notarized and then validated by a locally designated agency such as a chamber of commerce. The Norwin Chamber offers Certificates of Origin for companies that are members of the chamber.

The Membership Directory and Community Resource Guide is printed annually and distributed to 3,000 Norwin Chamber members and the community at large. The directory is in full color and includes our membership listings, alphabetically and categorically, as well as information on the Norwin Community. Members can purchase advertising space in this guide to highlight their business.

Member-2-Member Discount Program allows members to offer special discounts to their fellow Norwin Chamber members. These discounts are listed on the Chamber’s website and newsletter inserts. Employees of members are also eligible to take advantage of these discounts.

Health Insurance is offered to Norwin Chamber members through ChamberChoice. Special programs through ChamberChoice include healthcare, dental and vision, health savings accounts and reimburse-ments, life insurance as well as short-term and long-term care.

Energy Savings Program – Affordable energy is a growing concern for many businesses and residential consumers. As a member of the Norwin Chamber of Commerce, learn how you can save money by joining a chamber energy pool through an exclusive program with On-Demand Energy Solutions – a program affiliated with ChamberChoice. Business Insurance Dividend Program – Chambers of Commerce Service Corporation (CCSC) recently partnered with Penn National Insurance to provide a group program with the opportunity to earn dividends. All chamber members are eligible for the dividend program, subject to individual risk characteristics, loss experience, and current underwriting guidelines. The program offers members a full range of property and casualty insurance, as well as the opportunity to earn a dividend depending on group premium volume and claims experience. Eligible lines include Business Owners, Property, Package Policies, Commercial Auto, General Liability, Inland Marine and Worker’s Compensation.

Ambassadors Program - Ambassadors are volunteers who serve as liaisons to new and existing Chamber members. Through personal vis-its, Ambassadors will educate and involve new and existing members and promote the programs of the Norwin Chamber of Commerce. As the goodwill arm of the Chamber, the Ambassador committee plays an essential role in member communication and retention.

Scholarships – Two $250.00 scholarships are available to any Norwin Chamber of Commerce member in good standing. Scholarships are to be used for conferences, classes or programs related to the member’s specific business or industry. Scholarship winners are announced at the Holiday Mixer in December.

Events & Programs

The Annual Dinner and Business Expo is held each spring and draws businesses large and small. This event provides our membership with the opportunity to showcase their businesses during the Expo, recognize outgoing Board members, welcome new Board members and honor the Chamber Person and Community Volunteer of the Year. Attendees enjoy hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, dinner and DJ entertainment throughout the evening.

Ribbon Cuttings are conducted by the Norwin Chamber staff and members for new businesses joining the community and chamber. Articles and photos are submitted to local newspapers and are published in the Norwin Chamber’s monthly newsletter, displayed on our website photo gallery and featured on our Facebook page.

Monthly Networking Luncheons are conducted at various member locations throughout the Norwin, Jeannette and Greensburg areas. Speakers from non-profit and community organizations are scheduled to educate members on their programs and services. Activities such as 30-Second Commercials and Progressive Networking are also scheduled during these luncheons. These have been designed to allow our members maximum prospect opportunities.

Evening Business Mixers enable members to network their businesses after work hours in casual. informal settings. Mixers are hosted by fellow Norwin Chamber members at their place of business providing the host the opportunity to open their doors and showcase their facility. Mixers are held in different locations from 4:30p.m. – 6:30p.m.

The Annual Golf Outing is held each June and draws over 100 golfers, both male and female. This 4-person scramble includes breakfast, a boxed lunch, a round of golf, full dinner, 50/50 raffle, Chinese auction and skill prizes.

Sample Norwin is held in September and features a large Vendor Expo where members can showcase their business and establish new business relationships. This event is open to the public and all chamber members and their employees as well as outside networking groups, business associations and community organizations.

Vendors can also invite their business customers to attend.

The Holiday Mixer, held in December and hosted by the Board of Directors, celebrates the holidays and our members with more than 150 people attending and enjoying an evening of food, friendship and business relationships

Thank You Patrol - this monthly activity is attended by Ambassadors, Chamber staff and Board members. A Norwin Chamber member is randomly picked and their location is visited

with balloons and treats for the owners and office staff as a way of saying Thank You for their membership in the Norwin Chamber of Commerce.

Cash Mobs target Norwin Chamber members who have a store front with items available for purchase. The purpose of these mobs is to support both the local businesses and the overall community. Cash Mobs are monthly and participants commit to purchase a minimum of $10.00 in product at the Cash Mob location.

Events & ProgramsFor Education... For Community...

Partners In Progress is a partnership between the Norwin Chamber of Commerce, the Norwin School District and local business people. The Partners In Progress committee organizes the following educational events:Job Shadowing – Juniors at Norwin High School explore their career interests for one day with a business person in that particular field. The Partners In Progress committee holds an orientation at the beginning of the school year. Interested students submit applications and are then set up for their shadowing near Groundhog Day.

Career Fair – Local companies, hospitals, armed services, businesses and professionals set up displays in the high school class rooms. Grades 9 through 12 attend informational lectures throughout the morning. Students can ask questions and address concerns about the area of their career interests.

Financial Reality Fair – Local credit unions and Norwin Chamber members work together to prepare students, grades 9-12, for the cost of living in the real world on their own. Students pick their career and learn to live on a budget within their means. The Financial Reality Fair is held each year at the Norwin High School.

Excellence In Education Luncheons – These luncheons are held every May to honor the top 20 students or 5% (whichever is greater) of the graduating classes from both Norwin and Penn-Trafford School Districts. The local business community sponsors the students’ lunches and gifts.

Norwin Chamber of Commerce Member Scholarship Foundation – This foundation is a separate organization which is funded by the sales of the Annual Lottery Calendar. The Foundation awards a $2,500.00 scholarship to a Norwin senior. The senior and their parents are honored at the Chamber’s Norwin Networking Luncheon in May of each year.

The Norwin Community Picnic is held on the first Wednesday of August every year at Idlewild & SoakZone in Ligonier, PA. This picnic, organized and sponsored by the Norwin Chamber of Commerce, recognizes the Norwin area and allows families and friends to come together to celebrate their community. Business owners throughout the community donate prizes to give away during the big finale of the day.

Chamber Member Scholarships - A $2,500 scholarship is awarded each year to a child or grandchild of a Norwin Chamber member or an employee of a Norwin Chamber member. The scholarship is awarded to a high school senior and there is no stipulation on the school district they attend. Funds for this scholarship come from the sales of the Annual Lottery Calendar.

Our history is interlaced with mining, agriculture... and community spirit.

The town of Irwin, Pennsylvania was founded by Colonel John Irwin, a fur trader and businessman from Ireland. He and his son led the construction of the Greensburg Pike, later renamed Lincoln Highway and now known as Route 30 from Greens-burg west through Irwin. Colonel Irwin’s house, c. 1799, still stands on Brush Hill Road.

Officially formed in 1773, North Huntingdon Township was created when Westmoreland County was divided into two townships. In 1852 the Pennsylvania Railroad and the coal mines brought people in and Irwin Borough was soon formed. Immigrants moved to Irwin to work in the mines. In 1989, North Irwin became the residential community for the North Irwin Glass Plant.

During the early 1900s, life in Irwin revolved around the mines and small industries; however, much of the surrounding area remained agricultural and residential.

The business district began to thrive after the Pennsylvania Turnpike end and bypass of Route 30 were built in 1940, running through North Hunt-ingdon township. Families often visited downtown Irwin on Saturday nights for their one night out of relaxation. This generated other businesses, including motels and a drive-in movie theater.

Like many small town regions, the area has seen its good and bad times. Today, Irwin and North Huntingdon are fiercely proud of their small, caring communities, residential and business areas and people who represent the values of America.

AREA HIStORy


North Huntingdon Township is an excellent place to live and work in a suburban, growing community with a high quality of life and a small town feel. A part of Westmoreland County, the

township’s cost of living and taxes are moderate compared with surrounding municipalities and counties. The township is located within easy commuting distance (less than 20 miles and a 35 minute trip during non-rush hour) to Pittsburgh and the amenities of a large metropolitan area. Drive east for less than an hour and you are in the beautiful Laurel Highlands. The Pennsylvania Turnpike runs east and west on the edge of the township with a turnpike interchange located within the community. State Route 30 also runs east and west through the middle of the township.

North Huntingdon is middle to upper-middle class income and is largely residential with ever growing commercial development. The estimated population from 20130 is 30,831 with an estimated 14,719 homes and/or lots in the 27.46 square mile radius.

The Norwin School District has one high school, one middle school, one intermediate school and four grade schools. There is one private Catholic school, Queen of Angels, located in Irwin.

North Huntingdon Township maintains 11 park facilities including the popular Oak Hollow Park which is used for picnics, graduation parties, family reunions, township events and fishing in the natural lake. Indian Lake Park is home to the area’s only fully stocked lake, while Braddock’s Trail provides a seasonal nature environment in this 148 acre park. Additionally, other satellite parks include Hill Top, Westmore-land City, Lincoln Acres, Country Hills, Tinkers Run, Jackson Acres, Lions Park and Penns Woods.

i rwin – Westmoreland County’s Best Kept Secret! The Irwin Borough, a traditional small town in southwestern PA, is about a half hour east of Pittsburgh and 15 miles west of Greensburg. Quaint

residential neighborhoods, beautiful recreational areas and an active downtown business district are a few prominent features. The one-square mile region has 4,366 residents whose public school students attend the Norwin School District.

While Irwin Borough is mainly residential, it still has an active business district. Located near the Penn-sylvania Turnpike and Route 30, many businesses line the roads both on the outskirts and in the downtown area. Shops run the gamut from collectibles to clothing and gifts to restaurants and cafes. The downtown’s future looks bright, partly due to the ongoing reno-vation efforts of The Irwin Project. Parks & RecreationResidents have several active rec-reational sites to utilize in the Irwin Borough. Irwin Park Amphitheater is the site of free outdoor concerts. The Irwin Park includes a walking track, tennis courts, a basketball court and more. Penglyn Field also features baseball fields, play equipment and tennis and basketball courts.

AREA SCHOOlSthe Norwin School District is comprised of the municipalities of North Huntingdon Township, Irwin Borough

and North Irwin Borough in the southwest corner of Westmoreland County. The Norwin School District is the result of the 1958 jointure between the North Huntingdon Township Schools and the Irwin Borough Schools, reuniting what was in the 1930’s one system.

The present Norwin school system consists of seven schools serving students, a District administration building, and a central maintenance facility. Approximate student enrollment is as follows: 1,950 students attend the four K-4 elementary schools; 800 students in Grades 5 and 6 attend Hillcrest Intermediate School; 820 students in Grades 7 and 8 attend Norwin Middle School; and 1,640 students are enrolled at the High School, which encompasses grades 9-12. All school buildings and the Administration Building have been newly built and/or renovated since 2003.

The Norwin School District Mission Statement is: Through quality educational experiences, the Norwin School District prepares students to become productive and responsible citizens in an ever-changing global society. To fulfill the mission, the Board of School Directors is committed to providing quality facilities, staff, educational materials and opportunities to challenge students. In addition to more than 300 highly qualified, certified teachers and administrators, Norwin School District provides full-time psychologists, a Director of Special Education and Student Services, gifted coordinators, school counselors, a home and school visitor, certified nurses, and school librarians.

The Norwin School District academic curriculum challenges students at all levels. Students are provided further challeng-ing opportunities through chorus, band, art, theater, Advanced Placement classes, and College in High School courses. In addition, Norwin faculty participates in ongoing professional development to continually improve their teaching and student learning. As a result, Norwin School District has shown improvement on the state PSSA exams, as documented by the Pittsburgh Business Times, which ranked the District 11th among western Pennsylvania’s 105 school districts and third in

Westmoreland County for 2012.

The secondary schools in the Norwin School District also offer a variety of extracurricular activities to develop the total student. Norwin students have the opportunity to participate and succeed in numerous areas outside the curriculum at the varsity level and the Middle School level. Twenty-two (22) PIAA-WPIAL varsity-level sports are available for students to select, including: Baseball, Football, Wresting, Girls’ Field Hockey, Softball, Boys and Girls Basketball, Cross Country, Golf, Soccer, Swimming, Tennis, Track, and Volleyball.

These quality programs and services are administered in a fiscally responsible manner as demonstrated by Norwin School District’s school taxes, which in the 2012-2013 school year are the lowest among Westmoreland County’s 17 school districts. the Penn-Trafford School District begins approximately eighteen (18) miles to the east of Pittsburgh on the western edge of Westmoreland County in Western Pennsylvania. The district encompasses the communities

of Trafford, Manor, Penn and Penn Township; it is a compatible blend of suburban, communal, and rural developments. The background of the area ranges from the historically significant Bushy Run Battlefield on the east to the community of Trafford, rising out of the important industrial Westinghouse Valley and named for Trafford Park in England.

The Board of Directors’ vision for the district is for all students is to have a customized learning plan that best aligns with their interest, level, and need. Experiential learning will occur through internships, simulations, observations, and instruction embedded in real life experiences. Students demonstrate and apply their understanding of concepts through independent projects that are meaningful and applicable to real life situations. This customized learning approach is supported by the use of virtual instructional tools in order to advance learning without the barrier of time.

The professional family at Penn-Trafford numbers 280, which includes highly qualified teachers, administrators, nurses, counselors, librarians, and specialists. Five (5) of our staff have earned Doctorate degrees, 174 have earned Masters Degrees or equivalencies.

The Penn-Trafford School District has an enrollment of 4050 students. There are five (5) elementary schools that house students in grades K-5 and two (2) middle schools with students in grades 6-8. The high school houses students in grades 9-12. The district provides a comprehensive educa-tional program that includes a rigorous Academic program, Fine and Performing Arts and an extensive Athletics program. The high School offers nine (9) Advanced

Placement courses and twenty-two (22) dual enrollment courses, which provide college credit through the University of Pittsburgh, Seton Hill University, LaRoche College, and Mt. Aloysius. The Athletic Department provides opportunities for boys and girls to participate in twenty-six (26) varsity sports which include Football, Soccer, Cross Country, Tennis, Golf, Ice Hockey, In-Line Hockey, Bowling, Basketball, Volleyball, Track, Baseball, Softball, Lacrosse, Wrestling, Swimming, Cheerleading and Field Hockey.

Based on the results of the 2012 PSSA Exams, Schooldigger.com ranked the Penn-Trafford School District 15th out of 553 schools in Pennsylvania. In 2013, the Pittsburgh Business Times ranked the district at number 11 out of 105 western Penn-sylvania schools. Penn-Trafford High School was recognized with a Silver Badge in 2013 as one of the “Best High Schools” in U.S. News & World Report. The high school was ranked 59th in the state of Pennsylvania out of 687, public, charter, and magnet schools. It was also ranked 2003rd nationally, which is among the top 10% of all high schools in the country.

the Norwin Area has 40 active congregations of a variety of faiths meeting every week. Our church buildings are beautiful to visit and the people are warm and inviting. There is most certainly a ministry that will be the right choice for your family’s spiritual, emotional and physical needs.

Our community has a very active fellowship of ministers who gather on the first Tuesday of each month. The purpose of the Norwin Area Ministerium is to facilitate ministry that is both internal and external. Internally, the Norwin Area Ministerium seeks to minister to one another by promoting interpersonal relationships, presenting and discussing topics of mutual interest and availing ourselves of opportunities for personal development. Externally, the Norwin Area Ministerium seeks to co-shepherd by presenting a united witness to the community as well as to represent general church interest in the Norwin area.

The following are community events: Lenten Service participation – led by Irwin businessmen hosted at First United Church of Christ Good Friday Community Breakfast – organized in conjunction with the

Norwin Chamber of Commerce Good Friday Community Walk of the Cross Opening prayer for the North Huntingdon Township Commissioners monthly meeting Support and cooperation with the local food banks.
