Formats for Library Instruction

The Library provides distance and outreach reference services to users in a variety of formats – face to face, online tutorials, e-mail, telephone, social media and correspondences.

The Library has a total of 18 online instructional videos for easy access to all students and faculty in iTunes.

In Jan. 2014, through an expanded relationship with SEL, an introduction to library services for online students in video format was created.

Librarians have received instructions in Bluejeans and Adobe Connect in order to provide synchronous and asynchronous instruction to all students.

The Library participated in a virtual library instruction classroom pilot with SEL.

The Library’s classrooms were updated and converted to VTC classrooms.

Information Literacy

Instruction is administered through course-related library instruction sessions, course-integrated projects (Blackboard), Librarian embedded and exported library resources related to courses as well as online tutorials.

Students are taught the following skills: finding resources; organizing information; establishing priorities; maintaining research skills; keeping current; and evaluating the quality of the information.

Two virtual tour videos were created to introduce students to library services.

Services to online students and students taking courses at the off-site locations

Online access to bibliographic and full text resources through the Library’s web page.

Databases are listed alphabetically and by subject.

Library Instruction is available face to face, and online; tutorials, LibGuides (content management system used by librarians to share information by creating online guides on any topic, subject, course, or process), YouTube channel, by telephone, and by individual reference consultation.

Interlibrary Loan provides articles and books from other libraries to students who take courses online or off campus. Print materials are shipped to the distant location. In some instances, the University has established a Memorandum of Understanding with a library at distant sites (Alaska and the Virgin Islands) which provide local support to the online or distant student.

Online Learning and Instruction

The Library has made information available to students online by developing and deploying through Blackboard, a set of links to library tutorials and online resources.

Library instructors have received the Module 1 training for online instruction in order to provide local or remote instruction with the use of software like Adobe Connect.

Librarian, Ann Cannon, currently enrolled in SEL 901 to obtain certification for online teaching. Goal: To better equip the library with its’ online presence in Blackboard.

Resources

The Library has acquired more online resources (e-Book collections)to support students at off-site locations and in online courses.

Databases are available in both full text and bibliographic.

Digital or streaming video collections help provide the same access to the Library’s resources for students at distant locations.

List of journals for the School of Education located on website.

The use of a proxy server maintains the integrity of access to licensed materials by authenticating student’s identity using their campus login or by using their name and student ID number.

Collection Development

All School or College subscription lists were reviewed in Sept 2013

Objective was to reduce Library spending on journal/periodical subscriptions by 25%

We did not reach a 25% reduction, but subscriptions were cut by $30,000 without reducing access to needed journals.

Collection development is ongoing with faculty members able to place orders for needed materials at any time through the Library's Purchase Request system.
