Drug Delivery to the Central Nervous SystemEDITOR: KEWAL K. JAIN, Jain PharmaBiotech, Basel, SwitzerlandISBN-13: 978-1-60761-528-6PAGES/ILLUS: approx. 320 p., 98 illus., 4 in color, HardcoverPRICE: $189.00AVAILABLE (US): January 2010

Playing an important role in the treatment of neurological disorders, the delivery of drugs to central nervous system (CNS), both administered directly and administered systematically for targeted action, encounters a major challenge in the form of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which limits the access of drugs to the brain substance. In Drug Delivery to the Central Nervous System, experts in the field present essential methods used to deliver therapeutics across the BBB, both in experimental animals and in humans. In addition to those methods, several overviews of innovative methods and their applications are presented in order to give a glimpse of the future of this research. As a volume in the successful Neuromethods series, this book presents its protocols with the kind of detailed description and implementation advice that is crucial for getting optimal results.Authoritative and cutting-edge, Drug Delivery to the Central Nervous System serves as an ideal guide to scientists continuing to pursue knowledge of the delicate interactions between pharmaceuticals and the brain.

Current Challenges for Corporate FinanceA Strategic Perspective

EDITORS: GUIDO EILENBERGER, University of Rostock, Germany; SASCHA HAGHANI, Partner, Roland Berger Strategy, Germany; ALFRED KÖTZLE, European Viadrina University, Germany; KURT REDING, University of Kassel, Germany and KLAUS SPREMANN, Univ. of St. Gallen, Switzerland

ISBN-13: 978-3-642-04112-9PAGES/ILLUS: approx. 130 p., HardcoverPRICE: approx. $59.95AVAILABLE (US): October 2009

Strategic corporate finance? This sounds like a paradox at first. After all, corporate finance means responding to the financial markets. Strategy, on the other hand, aims to change and shape the environment in the long term. Lately, though, more and more managers and investors appear to be breaking the laws of the capital market. At the same time, corporations are discovering new ways to not just react to the capital markets, but to actively shape them. The authors show that these violations are not isolated occurrences, but part of a paradigm shift. If companies want to stay successful in changing markets, they have to take a strategic approach to corporate finance.

SELLING POINTS: Presents an exhaustive analysis of how mergers and acquisitions, strategic corporate

communication, entrepreneurial finance, corporate social responsibility and the emergence of new investors interrelate and affect developments on the financial market

Authors present a systematic explanation of what, up to now, were seen as disparate trends in financial markets

Geomechanics of Failures-- Advanced TopicsAUTHORS: E.E. ALONSO, UPC, Barcelona, Spain; NÚRIA PINYOL,

UPC, Barcelona, Spain and ALEXANDER M. PUZRIN, ETH Zürich, Switzerland

ISBN-13: 978-90-481-3537-0PAGES/ILLUS: approx. 270 p., HardcoverPRICE: $89.95AVAILABLE (US): December 2009

Geotechnical failures, specially the catastrophic ones, are a stimulus to improve current understanding of phenomena and procedures and tools for analysis and prediction. This unconventional approach to geomechanics is the essence of this book. In general, soil mechanics and geotechnical textbooks describe first the concepts and theoretical developments and then apply them to interpret or solve a particular applications. This book follows a different course. The case (a failure) is first described and then an explanation is sought. The cases selected have been grouped into three main topics: Landslides, Embankments and Dams and Dynamics of Failures. Cases selected (Vaiont, Aznalcóllar, Brattas-St. Moritz) are unique and illustrate a number of relevant and to some extent controversial issues which are of wide interest, without claiming exhaustive treatment of the subject. The book teaches how to build the necessary models to understand the failures. Well established soil mechanics concepts are the necessary background. But the cases analyzed require in general a step ahead which is specific for the case analyzed. Balance and equilibrium equations are often required as a starting point. They are formulated at different scales, which are selected having in mind the abstract representation of each case.

SELLING POINTS: Ideal textbook combining well-known appealing cases with problems and solutions in

a structural approach A summary section of lessons learned is provided in all chapters

MARKET: Graduate and postgraduate students as well as lectureres in GEOTECHNICAL and Civil ENGINEERING; Professional Engineers and consultants in the field of Geotechnical Engineering.

Geomechanics of FailuresAUTHORS: ALEXANDER M. PUZRIN, ETH Zürich, Switzerland; E.E.

ALONSO, UPC, Spain and NÚRIA PINYOL, UPC, SpainISBN-13: 978-90-481-3530-1PAGES/ILLUS: approx. 250 p., HardcoverPRICE: $89.95AVAILABLE (US): December 2009

It is not an easy task to fascinate a student with a standard course on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. If, however, the same material is presented as a tool to explore a natural or a man-made "disaster", both the motivation and the ability to absorb this material increase dramatically. The case studies in this book could help to build an introductory Forensic Geotechnical Engineering course, covering such basic topics as settlements, bearing capacity and excavations. The failure cases considered in this book have something in common – they can be all reasonably well explained using so called "back-of-the-envelope" calculations. These simple methods based on clear mechanical considerations are the endangered species of the computer dominated era, though sometimes they could prevent a disaster caused by a wrong application of computer models. In particular, the upper bound limit analysis has repeatedly proven itself as a powerful tool allowing for sufficiently accurate estimates of the failure loads and leaving a lot of room for creativity.

SELLING POINTS: Combines well-known appealing cases with problems and solutions in a structural

approach Failure cases covering a larger area of geotechnical problems are included into the

companion book Geomechanics of Failures: Advanced Topics by the same authors

Although security is prevalent in PCs, wireless communications and other systems today, it is expected to become increasingly important and widespread in many embedded devices. For some time, typical embedded system designers have been dealing with tremendous challenges in performance, power, price and reliability. However now they must additionally deal with definition of security requirements, security design and implementation. Given the limited number of security engineers in the market, large background of cryptography with which these standards are based upon, and difficulty of ensuring the implementation will also be secure from attacks, security design remains a challenge. This book provides the foundations for understanding embedded security design, outlining various aspects of security in devices ranging from typical wireless devices such as PDAs through to contactless smartcards to satellites.

Sustaining Groundwater ResourcesA Critical Element in the Global Water Crisis

EDITOR: J.ANTHONY A. JONES, Aberystwyth University, UKISBN-13: 978-90-481-3425-0PAGES/ILLUS: approx. 260 p., 85 illus., 10 in color, HardcoverPRICE: approx. $159.00AVAILABLE (US): January 2010

Burgeoning population and climate change are among the most critical challenges facing the 21st century. Both have critical implications for groundwater resources, especially in many developing countries where resources are already under pressure. Due to low rainfall and high evaporation in parts of the Middle East and North Africa, groundwater is not being renewed, and groundwater laid down up to 10,000 years ago is literally being mined for irrigation, often very inefficiently. Over recent decades, groundwater levels have fallen dramatically in key grain-growing regions like the American Great Plains and the North China Plain. As the population grows and emerging economies like China and India demand more food, especially water intensive meat products, agricultural demand for water is set to increase. The rapid shift of population from the countryside to the cities is also adding to this pressure; most old wells in Beijing are now dry. Pollution from industry, agriculture and shanty towns is destroying many groundwater resources; some could take 50 years to clean up even with strict and immediate controls. This volume looks at the technical, socio-economic and political problems being faced, and at the developments in groundwater science and management that may help create a sustainable future for our planet.

SELLING POINTS: State-of-the-art review of groundwater science and management Comprehensive up-to-the-minute analysis of current problems with groundwater

resources Thorough discussion of projected problems in the near future Recommendations for achieving sustainability

Geology may appear remote from human health. However, rocks are the fundamental building blocks of the Earth’s surface, full of important minerals and chemical elements. Most elements are taken into the human body in air, food and water. Rocks are broken down by weathering processes to form the soils on which crops and animals are raised. Drinking water travels through rocks and soils as part of the water cycle, and much of the dust and some of the gases contained in the atmosphere are of geological origin. Many diseases and conditions can be traced to sources in natural Earth materials. There is an urgent need to apply geochemical and mineralogical techniques to pathology and the study of internal pathways. Both beneficial and harmful aspects of the links between Earth materials and human health need to be more fully understood. In particular, the relation between human health and excesses or deficiencies of elements, ions and key micronutrients (e.g. iodine, selenium, iron, arsenic, radon and many others), as well as globally widespread but less well-defined agents, need to be highlighted.

ISBN-13: 978-90-481-3427-4PAGES/ILLUS: approx. 410 p., HardcoverPRICE: approx. $159.00AVAILABLE (US): January 2010

This volume focuses on the broad pattern of increasing biodiversity through time, and recurrent events of minor and major ecosphere reorganization. Intense scrutiny is devoted to the pattern of physical (including isotopic), sedimentary and biotic circumstances through the time intervals during which life crises occurred. These events affected terrestrial, lacustrine and estuarine ecosystems, locally and globally, but have affected continental shelf ecosystems and even deep ocean ecosystems. The pattern of these events is the backdrop against which modelling the pattern of future environmental change needs to be evaluated.

An Introduction to Soil DynamicsAUTHOR: ARNOLD VERRUIJT, Delft University of Technology, The

Netherlands, Emeritus Professor of Soil MechanicsISBN-13: 978-90-481-3440-3PAGES/ILLUS: X, 356 p., 195 illus., With DVD, HardcoverPRICE: approx. $99.00AVAILABLE (US): February 2010

This book presents the basic principles of soil dynamics, and a variety of solutions of practical interest for geotechnical engineering, geophysics and earthquake engineering. Emphasis is on analytical solutions, often including the full derivation of the solution, and giving the main parts of computer programs that can be used to calculate numerical data. Reference is also made to a website from which complete computer programs can be downloaded. Soil behaviour is usually assumed to be linear elastic, but in many cases the effect of viscous damping or hysteretic damping, due to plastic deformations, is also considered. Special features are: the analysis of wave propagation in saturated compressible porous media, approximate analysis of the generation of Rayleigh waves, the analysis of the response of soil layers to earthquakes in the deep rock, with a theoretical foundation of such problems by the propagation of Love waves, and the solution of such basic problems as the response of an elastic half space to point loads, line loads, strip loads and moving loads.

MANAGEMENT / BUSINESS FOR PROFESSIONALS

The Delta ModelReinventing Your Business Strategy

AUTHOR: ARNOLDO C. HAX, Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

ISBN-13: 978-1-4419-1479-8PAGES/ILLUS: approx. 240 p., 70 illus., HardcoverPRICE: approx. $39.95AVAILABLE (US): December 2009

Strategy is the most central issue in management. It has to do with defining the purpose of an organization, understanding the market in which it operates and the capabilities the firm possesses, and putting together a winning plan. There are many influential frameworks to help managers undertake a systematic reflection on this issue. The most dominant approaches are Michael Porter’s "Competitive Strategy" and the "Resource-Based View of the Firm," popularized by Gary Hamel and C.K. Prahalad. Arnoldo Hax argues there are fundamental drawbacks in the underlying hypotheses of these approaches in that they define strategy as a way to achieve sustainable competitive advantage. This line of thinking could be extremely dangerous because it puts the competitor at the center and therefore anchors you in the past, establishes success as a way of beating your competitors, and this obsession often leads toward imitation and congruency. The result is commoditization - which is the worst outcome that could possibly happen to a business. The Delta Model is an extremely innovative view of strategy. It abandons all of these assumptions and instead puts the customer at the center. By doing that it allows us to be truly creative, separating ourselves from the herd in pursuit of a unique and differentiated customer value proposition. Many years of intense research at MIT, supported by an extensive consulting practice, have resulted in development of powerful new concepts and practical tools to guide organizational leaders into a completely different way of looking at strategy, including a new way of doing customer segmentation and examining the competencies of the firm, with an emphasis on using the extended enterprise as a primary way of serving the customer. This last concept means that we cannot play the game alone; that we need to establish a network among suppliers, the firm, the customers, and complementors – firms that are in the business of developing products and services that enhance our own offering to the customer. Illustrated through dozens of examples, and discussion of application to small and medium-sized businesses and not-for-profits, The Delta Model will help readers in all types of organizations break out of old patterns of behavior and achieve strategic flexibility -- an especially timely talent during times of crisis, intense competition, and rapid change.

The book starts with an elementary introduction to formal languages appealing to the intuition of working mathematicians and unencumbered by philosophical or normative prejudices such as those of constructivism or intuitionism. It proceeds to the Proof Theory and presents several highlights of Mathematical Logic of 20th century: Gödel's and Tarski's Theorems, Cohen's Theorem on the independence of Continuum Hypothesis. Unusual for books on logic is a section dedicated to quantum logic. Then the exposition moves to the Computability Theory, based on the notion of recursive functions and stressing number{theoretic connections. A complete proof of Davis{Putnam{Robinson{Matiyasevich theorem is given, as well as a proof of Higman's theorem on recursive groups. Kolmogorov complexity is treated.

Mean Curvature Flow and Isoperimetric InequalitiesAUTHORS: MANUEL RITORE, Universidad Granada, Spain and

CARLO SINESTRARI, Università di Roma "Tor Vergata", Italy

ISBN-13: 978-3-0346-0212-9PAGES/ILLUS: approx. 140 p., SoftcoverPRICE: approx. $39.95AVAILABLE (US): January 2010

Geometric flows have many applications in physics and geometry. The mean curvature flow occurs in the description of the interface evolution in certain physical models. This is related to the property that such a flow is the gradient flow of the area functional and therefore appears naturally in problems where a surface energy is minimized. The mean curvature flow also has many geometric applications, in analogy with the Ricci flow of metrics on abstract riemannian manifolds. One can use this flow as a tool to obtain classification results for surfaces satisfying certain curvature conditions, as well as to construct minimal surfaces. Geometric flows, obtained from solutions of geometric parabolic equations, can be considered as an alternative tool to prove isoperimetric inequalities. On the other hand, isoperimetric inequalities can help in treating several aspects of convergence of these flows. Isoperimetric inequalities have many applications in other fields of geometry, like hyperbolic manifolds.

SELLING POINTS: Serves as an introduction to the work of Huisken--Sinestrari about the formation of

singularities and surgery of the mean curvature Presents recent developments on the field of isoperimetric inequalities, mostly based

on the use of geometric flows, as well as applications of isoperimetric inequalities to hyperbolic geometry

Hybrid Switching DiffusionsProperties and Applications

AUTHORS: G. GEORGE YIN and CHAO ZHUISBN-13: 978-1-4419-1104-9PAGES/ILLUS: approx. 400 p., HardcoverPRICE: $119.00AVAILABLE (US): October 2009

This book presents a comprehensive study of hybrid switching diffusion processes and their applications. The motivations for studying such processes originate from emerging and existing applications in wireless communications, signal processing, queueing networks, production planning, biological systems, ecosystems, financial engineering, and modeling, analysis, and control and optimization of large-scale systems, under the influence of random environment. One of the distinct features of the processes under consideration is the coexistence of continuous dynamics and discrete events. This book is written for applied mathematicians, applied probabilists, systems engineers, control scientists, operations researchers, and financial analysts. Selected materials from the book may also be used in a graduate level course on stochastic processes and applications or a course on hybrid systems. A large part of the book is concerned with the discrete event process depending on the continuous dynamics. In addition to the existence and uniqueness of solutions of switching diffusion equations, regularity, Feller and strong Feller properties, continuous and smooth dependence on initial data, recurrence, ergodicity, invariant measures, and stability are dealt with. Numerical methods for solutions of switching diffusions are developed; algorithms for approximation to invariant measures are investigated. Two-time-scale models are also examined. The results presented in the book are useful to researchers and practitioners who need to use stochastic models to deal with hybrid stochastic systems, and to treat real-world problems when continuous dynamics and discrete events are intertwined, in which the traditional approach using stochastic differential equations alone are no longer adequate.

The Evidence for Population-Based Intervention

EDITORS: ARDEN HANDLER, University of Illinois at Chicago, IL, USA; JOAN KENNELLY, University of Illinois at Chicago, IL, USA and NADINE PEACOCK, University of Illinois at Chicago, IL, USA

ISBN-13: 978-1-4419-1498-9PAGES/ILLUS: approx. 400 p., HardcoverPRICE: approx. $159.00AVAILABLE (US): February 2010

The core of evidenced-based maternal and child health is about using the best research about the safety and effectiveness of specific tests, treatments, and other interventions to help guide MCH decisions. Females of child-bearing age especially need to be informed about the best strategies to ensure and protect their health. Reducing Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Reproductive and Perinatal Outcomes takes several key topics on reproductive outcomes and approaches them from a population-based standpoint. Chapters include sexually transmitted infections (STIs), infertility, pregnancy and birth, and maternal morbidity, among others. Authors will focus on overall strategies for prevention, reduction, and/or promotion and would address particular strategies to reduce disparities in the selected outcome.

SELLING POINTS: As maternal and child health is one of the core areas of study for public health

students, the text will cater to the students specializing in this area. Focuses on the extent possible on population interventions, rather than clinically

focused interventions, related to particular outcomes Offers "summary of the evidence" tables that reflect studies related to key

interventions discussed in each chapter

Medical advances have brought under scrutiny many behavioral syndromes that were undifferentiated in the past, as well as a greater appreciation of the cognitive and behavioral consequences of medical and neurological disorders. This book will focus on the diseases, syndromes, and disorders that involve neurocognitive dysfunction with the intention of providing a reference book for clinical evaluation, treatment, and design of research studies. The concept of this book extends beyond the prior Medical Neuropsychology book’s focus on cognitive sequelae of organ and system pathology, to the current major categories of brain disorders presenting in neurology and medicine practices, so that individuals in major medical and university medical settings will find the more rare diagnoses included, yet those in smaller settings will find both the common diagnoses as well as needed reference material to evaluate the occasional rare disorder. Psychiatric diagnoses per se are excluded, and disorders that result in neurological injury but also cause severe morbidity are excluded, in order to focus on survival issues. Neurological and medical topics will be internationally relevant.

SELLING POINTS: organized by disease/disorder, rather than by testing techniques breadth of topics, includes many not addressed by other books on neuropsychology:

This textbook presents the design and analysis of experiments that comprise the aspects of classical theory for continuous response, modern procedures for categorical response, and especially for correlated categorical response. For any design (independent and matched-pair response) the parametric and nonparametric tests depending on the data level are given. Complex designs, such as, for example, cross-over and repeated measures, are included at an introductory and advanced manner. The problem of missing data is also handled with care and procedures in approaching this problem are proposed. Thus, this is an important resource/reference book for undergraduates and university teachers, for statistical researchers in the pharmaceutical industry, or other industries, as well as for clinical research in medicine and dentistry. The third edition contains a new chapter on incomplete block designs that includes the balanced incomplete block design and partially balanced incomplete block design in addition to the general theory on incomplete block designs.
