CHORAL FEST 2018 October 12-14, 2018 Moncton, NB Vaughan Williams, Dona Nobis Pacem Clinician: Dr. Victoria Meredith NBCF is thrilled to announce our Choral Fest clinician for 2018, Dr. Victoria Meredith. This October she will conduct Choral Fest atten-dees in Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem. A favourite of Choral Fest attendees, Dr. Meredith has conducted the Choral Fest Massed Choir twice before, in the Puccini Mes-sa di Gloria in 1999 and in the Mozart Solemn Vespers in 2008. Registration and other details to come in the coming months. Watch for news!     

CHORAL FEST 2018: WORKING WITH ADULT SINGERS WORKSHOP Dr. Meredith will give a workshop in Moncton on Working with Adult Singers in advance of the Choral Fest weekend. This workshop will be of exceptional value to conductors, teach-ers, and all who work with aging singers. Stay tuned for details!

MEMBER NEWS SINGERS WANTED FOR MESSIAH SING-A-LONG Deadline to register: April 27 Performance: Sunday May 6 A sing-a-long presentation of selections from Handel’s Messiah will take place at St. Paul’s United Church on Sunday, May 6. Choir direc-tor, Alexis Ervin and organist, Sharon Pond are looking for singers in all voice parts.

If you have sung the Messiah before, or have always wanted to give it a try, you can reserve a spot by e-mailing: [email protected] Please provide your name, contact information and the voice part you sing. Singers can bring their own music or arrange to rent scores. Come prepared to perform; there will be no advance practice as a group. The deadline to register is April 27. Singers will receive infor-mation on excerpts being sung once they reg-ister. The fee to participate is $10, payable on arrival for the performance. Guest soloists for the event will be soprano Sally Dibblee and tenor David Steeves. The public is invited to attend. The hour-long pro-gram will start at 2:30 p.m. Admission for the performance is $15, payable at the door.

SAINT JOHN MEN’S CHORUS SEEKS MUSI-CAL DIRECTOR Deadline for applications: April 30, 2018 The Saint John Men’s Chorus is seeking a full time Musical Director beginning September 2018. The Chorus is made up of between 25 and 30 men singing in four parts. Musical se-lections have been a mixture of challenging classical, pop, folk, show tunes, and spirituals. Typically practice has been held on Tuesday evenings with a Christmas and a spring con-cert. Alternative timing and concert formats would be considered. SUSSEX CHORAL SOCIETY SEEKS DIRECTOR AND ACCOMPANIST FALL 2018 After 23 years of fruitful collaboration with David Mitchell and Karen Gallegher, the Sus-sex Choral Society is looking for a new director and pianist for the Fall session of 2018.  We would like to thank David and Karen for all the hard work they have put into making our choir the best it could be.  We have had  many many happy hours of music making together, and they will be sorely missed. But we want to continue to sing together.  To that end, we invite any interested musicians who have experience in directing a 30-40 per-son choir to contact us.  We also are looking for an piano accompanist.  We meet once weekly from September to May, with holidays off. We have  16 rehearsals in the Fall with a concert in December, and 20 rehearsals in the Spring with a concert in late May.  We sing an eclectic mixture of music:  classical, pop, folk, show tunes, spirituals, celtic, SATB. On Friday, March 30, 2018 (Good Friday), the Fredericton Choral Society and the Fredericton Symphony Orchestra will present Antonín Dvořák’s Stabat Mater, one of the towering monuments of choral music, at Wilmot United Church, 7:30 p.m. Featuring soloists Sally Dib-blee, Vicki St. Pierre, Michael van der Gaag and Paul Bustin.

Dvořák’s setting of the 13th century hymn ‘Sta-bat Mater’, which imagines Mary’s suffering during Christ’s crucifixion, was composed in 1876–1877, shortly after the death of Dvořák’s young children. CHOIRS FOR CHANGE ASSOCIATION EAST-ERN HORIZON CHORAL COMPETITION Deadline for submissions: April 27, 2018 2018 Competition Guidelines: This choral writing competition is exclusively for composers from marginalized identities, in an effort to seek social equity in today’s con-temporary choral environment. Entry into the competition is free, and shortlisted finalists will have their works performed and recorded by Eastern Horizon, a project-based, high-level choir. In the final performances, a first place

Submission Period: February 20 - April 27 2018, noon AST Eligibility: To be eligible to enter in this competition, you must identify with a community that has been historically and/or traditionally marginalized by the structural injustices of society. A non-com-prehensive list of these communities include: First Nations people, femme folk, women, people of colour, African Canadians, LGBTQ+ people, newcomers, people with disabilities, Acadians, and Métis. Applicants will be re-quired to write a short personal statement ad-dressing the intersections of their identity. Applicants of all skill levels and ages are en-couraged to enter the competition. Submission Requirements: Each composer is limited to making one sub-mission to the competition. There is no fee to enter the competition. Each submission must fit the following criteria:

• Must have been composed between April 2016 and the end of the submission period

• Must not have been performed before

• Voicing for at least SATB up to SSAATTBB

VANCOUVER BACH CHOIR CHORAL COM-POSITION COMPETITION Deadline for submission: August 31, 2018.  The VBC is pleased to announce the inaugural year of a new Choral Composition Competi-tion. The competition was established by a generous private donor to encourage the cre-ation of new choral music by Canadian com-posers and to honour the organization’s history of engaging local and national composers. The competition is open to unpublished com-posers who are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or landed immigrant. If a citizen, you are not required to be currently residing in Canada.  There is no age restriction. The winner of the competition will receive:

• A cash prize of $2000 issued after the pre-miere performance.

• A premiere of the work presented at Christ-mas with the Bach Choir on December 2nd, 2018.

• Access to an archival recording of the pre-miere.

Works to be submitted must be unpublished, but do not need to have been composed specifically for this competition. You may only submit one composition per year for consider-ation.
