LCP Message -- By sulistiyana wirawan

Hey AIESEC!

How are you feeling? Excellent? So-so? Lost? Well, not to worry, all these feelings are normal. These are three typical feelings that members generally have upon joining AIESEC. Being in all three stages before, one thing that I would like to emphasise on is, no matter what we feel; let’s seize the oppor-tunity available in front of us. Be proactive, talk to more people to make new friends and get inspired by other people’s stories. Believe together we achieve.

First of all, I would like to welcome 90 new members who were successfully recruited in the recent August Recruitment 2012. It’s really a great learning experience for all of us, plan-ning and running the entire recruitment operations. We would really like to thank every single one of you who actively participated in the sessions, both positive and constructive feedback were col-lected. We enjoy the interaction and bonding time that we have with all of you and we are indeed very much empowered by your enthusiasm and willingness to learn. Once again, welcome to AIE-SEC NTU Family. And, welcome back on board for all senior members and the leadership board members. It’s now our turn, as 12-13 generations, to bring our LC NTU to the next greater level.

AIESEC NTU strives to achieve many things this term. First, our focus would be to achieve our operational growth goals, promoting exchanges as well as leadership opportunities for our members. Our performance reflects how much impact we have been creating to our members as well as to our society. To support this, we are promoting the culture of exchange as well as encouraging members to take dual roles by joining Organising Committees and/or taskforces.

The Leadership Board team has planned a series of events to hold this entire term (Please refer to AIESEC NTU Major Event Highlights in page 16). On top of that, in this new term 12-13, AIESEC NTU also celebrates the ‘birth’ of new departments – Project Entre-preneurship as well as Stakeholders and Event

Management, that were established as we believe we should make our presence more relevant on cam-pus as well as in the society we live in.

There are many exciting opportunities coming up even for this December holiday. For some of us who can’t wait to experience new environment, you may want to pack your bags and get ready for our Winter Exchange Programme. For some of us who are curious and want to find out more about AIESEC’s conference and its culture, the National Leadership Development Conference is there for us. Can’t get enough and can’t wait any longer to contribute to more? Some of us may participate in CEED (Cultural Envoy for Exchange Development).

Last but not least, AIESEC NTU would also like to welcome our international AIESECers – those who are currently on an academic exchange programme with NTU as well as those who are currently having internship in Singapore. The ability to connect one person from one part of the world to another, yes, that’s the power of AIESEC.

Enjoy your AIESEC journey! It’s yours to create :)

Singapore Entrepreneurship Challenge is the case study competition co-organized by AIESEC Singa-pore and Nanyang Technopreneurship Center. This two-week case challenge seeks to attract and develop youths who are passionate about leading a change via realistic case challenges with social startups. Singa-pore Entrepreneurship Challenge invited local del-egates to engage in the case challenge, ideas carnival, workshops, career fair and company visits. Through case study, dialogue and exchange sessions,it suc-cessfully created a rigorous learning environment as well as a platform for youths to improvise real busi-ness solutions of social startups and be innovative.

First Day: Startup Talent Search

Startup Talent search was a one-day event as part of NTU’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation week 2012. We invited more than 10 startups to NTU cam-pus as our partners. We set up a booth which func-tioned as a platform for startups to search for talents and for students to find internship opportunities.

Second Day: Singapore Entre-preneurship Challenge Launch Conference

-- By Yuan Zihan

SEC Launch Conference, as the most antici-pated events in SEC 2012, was held in Nanyang Executive centre. More than 200 entrepreneur-minded delegates from NTU, NUS, SMU and SIM attended the conference. Our guest speakers

from Eco Walk the Talk, The Hub Singapore, and The Talent Society, had a panel discussion around the topic ‘ Should you choose to work for a startup after graduation?’. They shared their entrepre-neurial experience and insights and had a in-spiring dialogue with delegates and partners. Later in the brainstorm sessions, our four case partners gave a presentation about their prob-lems to help participants understand better about their companies’ needs and brainstorm solutions.

In the end of the 5-hour event, each team chose one case to write a pre-case solution report about. Some of the delegates were really impressed by our speakers. They were very interested in those small medium enterprise and idea sharing about sustainability and innovation of one firm.

Third Day: Workshop and Pitching Session

Beginning with workshop given by Mr.

The pitching session started in the afternoon. After intensive brainstorming and discussions, each team gave a 5-minute presentation to correspond-ing startups to show and illustrate their proposed solutions. Our case partners were quite impressed by some teams’ ideas. They showed interested in talking with some teams after the competition fin-ished.

It was quite a fierce competition. Only 8 teams could step further into Grand Finale.

Fourth Day: Grand Finale

The presentation of tokens of appreciation marked the successful ending of SEC 2012. Besides the posi-tive feedback from participants, we also got joyful collaboration experience with our partners. Info Talk

The Info Talk marks the beginning of the August Recruitment this term. We could see that many were interested, as the seats filled up the LT. In take the “LEAP” with AIESEC NTU, Minghuan, shared with us her experience in Tunisia through an Exchange Programme from AIESEC called Global Community Development Programme (GCDP). Much was talked about the GCDP as well as the Management Experience Programme (MEP) expe-rience that day.

Simulation center

-- By Jeremy Koh The Simulation Center is organised to let AISEC candidates have a simulated experience of what the different departments do. This gives them a clearer idea on their choice of departments. Can-didates go through an engaging simulation where the mock up games are set up to simulate the ex-perience.

There was much anticipation and anxiety from the candidates that day. Here are some of the comments and thoughts from the interviewers and interviewees.

JuMPstart 2012!---- I DreaM, I Create, I enabLe

Introduction

Hey AIESEC! Being the first national-level conference for many of you, Jumpstart 2012 must have left a strong impact on your AIESEC journey! The theme of this year’s Jumpstart is ‘I dream, I create, I enable,’ with that, the organizing commit-tee really hopes that you will be empowered with strong passion towards your leadership journey in AIESEC! Has this awesome Jumpstart really em-powered you? I believe the answer must be ‘YES’!

Move your body, let’s Roll-call!

Roll-call has always been one of the most fun parts of AIESEC activities. On 15th September, AIESECers from all of the four local committees brought up a wonderful performance by showing the unique roll-call dance from each LC. The awe-some dancing indeed energized all of the AIESEC-ers in the opening plenary of Jumpstart 2012.

Micro! Soft! Number! One!

I say ‘Micro’ you say ‘Soft’, I say ‘Number’, you say ‘one’! The cheer led by our chair Sokmean welcomed our distinguished partner, Microsoft! As

--By Shen Bowen

our global partner since 2006, Microsoft has re-alised more than 60 internships for AIESECers. In the interview with John, marketing and operation director of Microsoft Singapore, he shared with us the three most important qualities the company is looking for are ‘Aspiration, Basics and Versatile’. As a former AIESECer, John strongly believes that the AIESEC leaders will be equipped with these qualities in their AIESEC journey. Do you want to join Microsoft for internship and further explore your potential? As an AIESECer, you are already in advantage!

Your GCDP Your experience

Many of the new members join AIESEC because of the GCDP opportunity, certainly, in our very first conference, you must want to find out more about this lifetime experience you are going to get from AIESEC. During the GCDP connection, many of the senior members shared their fantastic GCDP experience with the new members. In this

Page 11: Navig@te issue1 12/13

11 11

Navig@te, Direct Your aieSec Path

session, freshmen have found more information about those extremely popular GCDP destinations, such as Brazil, Tunisia, Ukraine, China etc. One of the return EP, Charles Lu even brought souvenirs from Brazil to better engage his audience. Can’t wait for going to Brazil? Learn Portuguese first!

Looking Forward, the AIESEC Time-line

“What do you want to achieve in 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 1 year and 1 decade?” I person-ally have never seriously thought about these ques-tions before this self-reflection exercise. After all the team-bonding games and crazy roll-calls, we finally came to the serious part of Jumpstart. Certainly, as a potential leader, setting targets is essential for our success. Although the question seems to be simple, in that 10 minutes, everyone was thinking very hard to figure out the answer. Finally, the OC collected all the personal goals together and made a collage of AIESEC time-line! After all, as a part of the AIESEC family, what you want to achieve will definetely deter-mine how AIESEC will be like in the near future.

It’s a party night!

“Oppa Gangnam style!” The whole day conference ended with a crazy party in SMU. In AIESEC, we learn hard but play harder. As a tradition of AIESEC conference, scull-ing undoubtedly was the climax of the party. Our NTU team 1 and team 2 both did a great job by de-feating our opponents in the first round. However, this year’s championship goes to SIM LC. If you want to help NTU to win back the sculling cham-pion, see you in Jumpstart 2013!

Annual General Meeting

As an annual event ,Annual General Meeting is working as a interactive platform for past year’s EB members to fully reflect their one year lead-ership experience and pass their roles to the new leadership lineup. It is also an invaluable event for newly joined AIESEC members to gain a compre-hensive image of AIESEC way and how these true AIESECers strived for our aligned goals.

This year’s AGM held on Sep 11th success-fully acknowledged the milestones achieved by 11/12 EB team and marked a new start for 12/13 EB and all AIESECers!

Started with the opening address by ex-LCP Anastasya Yolanda, we looked back and were im-pressed of the fruitful job done by 11/12 EB team and what AIECEC NTU had gained in the past year as a whole. Then followed by the main shining part of this AGM: leadership story sharing by each 11/12 department VP and gift exchange with their successors. At this time ,everyone of them cannot avoid of

getting emotional when they talked about one year’s tear and laughter, growth and changes. To an outsider, it maybe a lengthy part, but to each of us who is in AIESEC NTU this big family, we can truly understand how much they have experienced and gained out of their AIESEC journey and feel their strong faith, dedication and enthusiasm. Even for me, a new member joined AIESEC only weeks before, was really touched by their intriguing speeches and the great efforts they made. Seeing the whole LC working enjoyably together strongly motivated me to work much harder and be auda-cious to take any challenges ahead.

At last, it ended with ex-LCP Yolanda’s work handover to 12/13 LCP Sulistiyana Wirawan. It was followed by her touching closing speech and wishes to the year ahead. One sentence quoted by her fully interpreted AIESEC spirit : “There is a difference between interest and commitment. When

Page 13: Navig@te issue1 12/13

13

Navig@te, Direct Your aieSec Path

you are interested in doing something, you do it only when it is convenient. When you are commit-ted to do something, you accept no excuses; only results.” That’s how AIESECers strive for excel-lence step by step, year by year.

Local Committee Gathering

This semester’s very first Local Commit-tee Gathering(LCG) held on Sep 18th provided us with a superior platform to network with fel-low AIESECers and also overseas AIESECers that come to Singapore. Started with various roll calls and “Mingle,Mingle “game, all AIESECers got warmed up immediately ,and newly joined AIESEC members got better accustomed to this lovely family. Then several upcoming events and OC opportunities were uncovered to the whole LC ,anyone who is passionate about developing them-selves and venturing out of comfort zone to take challenges would be fully fulfilled by theses lead-ership chances offered ahead. It provided a huge stage for each AIESECer to enrich their experience and shape their unique AIESEC path.

Hey AIESECers! Do you still remember Genta? Our friend from Japan? He has only been staying in Singapore for 2 weeks, but I really had a great time with him in AIESEC. I even became emotional when I saw him off at Changi Airport. Being AIESECers, internationality is one of our most important charac-teristics, we will still have more and more chances to meet friends from all over the world, through GCDP or conferences. Now, let’s welcome Genta to tell us more about himself!

1.Which programme in AIESEC gives you the opportunity to come to Singapore?

--By Shen Bowen

The opportunity which took me to Singapore is CEEDership. It stands for Cultural Envoy for Exchange&Development. My current position in AIESEC Tokyo University is VP-International Relations or IR.My role is to organize CEED and study tours, and also contribute to smooth matching of ICX/OGX.

2.Why do you choose Singa-pore as your destination? Singapore is a nation that is growing rapidly, so we think it is a big business opportunity. Many students wish to have work experience in Singapore and companies wish to expand business to Singapore.Still, the connection between AIESEC Japan and Singapore is not so strong, so I wanted to strength-en the connection between the two countries. Also I was personally interested in visiting the place:) 3.In what ways you think you are benefited from AIESEC.

First, I could find something worth spending lots of time and making many efforts during my school days, apart from studies. Actually, the more effort I put in AIESEC, the more learning experience I will earn.

Second, since AIESEC provides leadership oppor-tunities at a high level, I will practically learn how I can display my leadership, being a good leader and even a good follower.

Last but not the least, by having an AIESEC back-ground, I will be able to travel all over the world and get to know the reality outside my country, and get to know many youth from each country. This will really help me in the future.

Page 15: Navig@te issue1 12/13

4.After attending so many AIE-SEC events here, what do you think is different between AIESEC JAPAN and AIESEC SIN-GAPORE?

Hmm this is a bit difficult...I think the biggest thing is the background of the members. In Japan most of the members are Japanese students, all the activities are held in Japanese, we have to be more open to others. Since @Singapore has a diversity in the member’s background, I feel it is easy for a CEEDer to work, and to fit in.The atmosphere of meetings and events are a bit similar. 5.What do you enjoy the most in Singapore?

Almost everything was enjoyable. If I need to mention one thing it was the farewell dinner&drinking at Chinatown and Clarke Quay was soooo fun!!Also Jumpstart was interesting and meaningful to me.

6.Do you have any special ex-perience in Singapore?

Making presentations about the Japanese internships in front of students. I was happy to know that so many students were interested in coming to our internships! 7. Something you want to say to the people in AIESEC NTU?

I really want to say thank you to everyone, to those who talked to me, took me around, helped me in work, etc..I feel very lucky and honored to have this opportunity in AIESEC NTU, at this time of the year. To strengthen the connection between

AIESEC Japan and AIESEC Singapore, our work and action from now on will be very important, so let’s keep in touch. Hope to come to Singapore again! Also I’m waiting for you guys to come to Japan, if you come to Tokyo I’ll show you around.

Do your best, and don’t forget to have fun on your AIESEC Journey:))
