iXblue Fiber-Optic Gyroscope technology meets the challenge of high latitude navigation
“Areas where FOGs are likely to remain unchallenged are precision pointing and tracking, and precision navigation (e.g. for submarines).”
At northerly latitudes, more than stability, the problem is to determine the correct heading without bias. Thanks to its high precision, iXblue’s INS consistently delivers performance levels similar to those at lower latitudes.

At the heart of iXblue inertial systems lies three Fiber-Optic Gyroscopes (FOGs). These extremely high performance rotation sensing devices make use of the relativistic Sagnac effect. Two identical laser beams propagate in opposite directions throughout a fiber-optic coil. The resulting phase difference between both beams is then accurately measured by interferometry to determine the actual angular velocity of the coil. This design takes full advantage of the reciprocity principle in the propagation of light, which enables a perfect device to be created even from imperfect components.
A FOG is therefore a genuine strapdown solid-state gyroscope exempted from all physical drawbacks that may affect other existing technologies (vibration, mechanical dither, sealed cavity and mirrors wearing away over time, etc.). This results in unrivaled longevity and reliability as well as very low power consumption and silent operation.FOG is therefore a unique technology currently reported as likely to remain unchallenged in the field of high-performance navigation in the naval environment.

The FLS Series is a 3D multi-beam Forward Looking Sonar which has been developed for multipurpose applications such as mine and obstacle avoidance, real-time mapping and navigation, as well as rapid environment assessment.
As military technology covered by a number of patents, the FLS Series comprises a dual Mills Cross multibeam sonar transducer. This technology provides unique volume coverage and the highest volume resolution.
FLS generates up to 16 simultaneous swathes along or across a vessel’s axis, providing complete three-dimensional coverage of the water column as well as
a bathymetric profile of the seabed and sediment identification analysis. Each detection operation in the water column is referenced in 3D and is automatically represented on a map created in real time, including local bathymetry. Its accuracy achieves an unrivaled level, thanks to its narrowest beams (1.6° x 1.6°), its advanced acoustic modulation principles (resolution +-7.5cm only) and its embedded motion sensor (each array has stabilizing beams with a micro- electric-mechanical systems (MEMS) sensor embedded in the sonar head). Its transducer generates several multibeam transmissions and acoustic processes to yield quantitative and
qualitative measurements of the marine environment. Its multiple advanced modulation modes, including CHIRP, combined with pulse compression, guarantee the highest possible detection performance, even in harsh environments.
All FLS information will be updated in an ECDIS user-friendly MMI which will facilitate an operator’s work. Furthermore, as it has a high level of automatization, the system can automatically detect, characterize and track targets, although an operator is able to set up target trackers manually.

An NDDS is the brain and backbone of any integrated navigation system architecture.It acquires, controls, correlates and processes any navigation sensor data anddistributes the consolidated navigation information on board to external systems (including platform systems such as
IBS, IPMS, as well as combat systems – CMS). Operational requirements applied to NDDS translate mainly into data validation, data safety, data integrity, real-time capability and system/data reliability (including built-in redundancy management and hot swapping).
Netans acts as a consistent common reference system which ensures that all parts of the system run with the same navigational data.

E-POSITIONING
Being able to provide position information with the required accuracy, integrity, continuity and availability is a key requirement for safe and efficient navigation. Position Navigation Timing (PNT) processes a variety of onboard sensors (GNSS, INS, Gyrocompass, DVL) to define the ship position. However, PNT tends to rely primarily on GNSS, that can be disrupted by many external factors. While dependence on GNSS is increasing,
disastrous scenarios of vessel position errors are becoming common. iXblue has thus developed a new concept of resilient PNT. Our approach is to combine standard navigation sensors together with other equipment available on board, such as Echo Sounders, Electronic Navigation Chart (ENC) and Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS). We intend to demonstrate that the provided PNT leads to more robust position information and more
efficient aid to human decision. This new system relies on innovative Probability Density Function approach applied to standard Pool Of Error (POE) navigation method, as we called “Bayesian POE”. The Bayesian POE is a new onboard robust and resilient PNT that provides reliable position information to the crew in a very intelligible way. This in turns helps them to make informed decisions in a reduced timeframe.

DriX operates without anyone on-board. From the very beginning, it was designed with no reference to any potential crew in mind. As a result, DriX does not look like a traditional V-shape hull vessel at all. With its pure hydrodynamics as a guideline, DriX design provides high stability at sea, and offers all submerged sensors with an exceptionally calm data harvesting environment.
In 2017, iXblue conducted the commercial launch of an offshore going USV, DriX. This new type of unmanned platform is the result of the vertical integration of iXblue’s know-how in navigation and sea applications. DriX diverges from the existing assets by its unmatched seakeeping, high transit speed and improved working
envelope. Initially targeted at the civilian market (hydrography and energy) where it was revealed as being a real game changer, DriX soon triggered off the interest of the defense community for a number of missions.
DriX design ensures its endurance and power output capability. Diesel-propelled for reliability reasons by a 37 HP engine with an extended MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure), DriX can sustain all speeds between 1 and 14 knots, from one to ten days before having to refuel.
DriX can be driven with either a remote control or conduct its preplanned mission on itsown. A monitoring crew remotely controls DriX and monitors and maintains it during its operation.
When sailing autonomously, the iXblue autopilot interacts with the mission preparation software. It is fitted with obstacle avoidance capabilities
The launcher is also the placewhere DriX will upload its collected data. It will soon be fitted with “Replenishment at Sea” capabilities, extending the sailing time to 1,000 hours between two maintenance stations on the vessel.
in direct communication with detection tools (TV/IR cameras and AIS) providing the anti-collision awareness required.
A Floating Launch and Recovery System (LARS), either towed or hoisted from a crane or a davit into the water, provides an appropriate docking station to the operating DriX. It also acts as a shelter during DriX hoisting
When it comes to datagathering, a sensor-embedding gondola, also fitted with a Phins C7 (iXblue Inertial Navigation System), is bolted to a two-meter submerged drop keel. Sea trials and civilian applications have shown
operations on a vessel’s work deck or davit.

DriX can host a range of payloads, from iXblue or any third-party manufacturer.
The gondola itself can be outstretched to 3 meters by 2 meters.

What DriX brings to the defense industry

Military bathymetry in peace-time will immediately benefit from everything DriX brings to the open market:• Enhanced data collection;• Saving vessel time;• Expanding the working
envelope (sea-state, time at sea...).
REA is a mission which aims at providing decision makers with knowledge on how the environment will be impacted by ongoing operations.
A number of assets, both human and technical, are involved in the data gathering and the interpretation neededto complete the assessment. REA can be conducted either openly in a non-dangerous environment, or on the contrary, under threat.A good example is an amphibious operation.In both cases, DriX will bring undeniable added-value, being in a position to:
• Work fast: - with increased survey speed; - with enhanced data gathering environment.
• Operate under cover: - launched by the amphibious force beyond the line of sight; - sailing stealthily inside the area of operation thanks to its reduced radar cross-section and heat signature; - work completely
independently, with no communication with the mother ship; - sail back independently to the mother vessel when the mission has been completed. • Collect a number of data: - Bathymetry, including seabed characterization and beach gradient; - EW interceptions.

Thanks to iXblue”s knowledge in underwater detection and navigation, DriX is also in a position to conduct UUV tracking and subsea positioning and detection.
As a surface asset DriX has no communication nor positioning issues. By being geographically close, it can also communicate with submerged UUVs and provide them with the accuracy they do not have. In turn, it can send back the gathered data to the mine warfare commander.
From a tactical point of view, DriX contributes to mine warfare in the following way:
• Transportation to the site on board a Task Force (TF). vessel (on the workdeck, on a davit, etc.). Before entering the danger area, DriX is lowered into the water, along with a mine disposal UUV. Fitted with a Mine Obstacle Avoidance Sonar (MOAS), which can be a FLS 150 from iXblue, DriX tracks the UUV and guides it through the minefield where it can perform its detection and neutralization tasks.
• DriX acts as the C2 relay for the UUV from the TF.
• DriX can also operate from a non-specialized surface vessel, where it would be
borne by a davit, in place of a RHIB. This opens up a number of possibilities, such as clearing a path for a following Task Force or a patrolling frigate/destroyer in a mine/ WaterBorne Improvised Explosive Device (WBIED) suspected environment (presence of chokepoints for instance, but also patrolling off the coast of a country at war.
• A DriX fitted with a MOAS is lowered into the water in front of the minefield andacts as a path scout for the TF;
• Multiple DriX can be used to cover an extended corridor.
• This can be done either in open seas or in sensitive areas, such as harbor entrances.
With its FLS 150, iXblue can detect any floating mine in the water column with 100% accuracy. It can also detect WBIED and trials show that FLS 150 detects 85% of seabed mines.
In a nutshell, DriX can act as a forward path clearer for a vessel or a TF
Mine Warfare
DriX is in a unique position to provide a most needed advantage to address the technological developments of submarines and their proliferation all over the planet, and at the same time, the reduction in the numberof specialized frigates and destroyers.
It is clear that DriX will never replace a warship for all its missions. However it shows specific qualities that make it an asset in the ASW domain:• An extremely low radiated
noise which, linked to its reduced radar cross-section and heat signature, make it very difficult to detect both from the surface and below the surface;
• Good endurance at ASW patrol speed (10+ days at 4 knots);
• A top speed of 14 knots which allows replacement in other areas and “jumps”
• The capability to tow an array, which are less and less cumbersome;
• A high power output which gives it the ability to operate
both in passive and active mode;
• A reduced footprint on the deck or on a davit where it can replace a RHIB for instance, depending on the mission’s threat assessment;
• Exceptional seakeeping capabilities which make it possible for it to operate in a range of sea-states.

Over the past few decades, international initiatives have been developed and encouraged to address the issue of Emergency Disaster Relief. When this happens, logistics become the key success factor. For coastal or island countries, this means
access from the sea, but these countries cannot wait for harbor facilities to be rebuilt before help is sent.Here too, DriX is a game changer as it can:• clear a path so that the
salvage party can access a pier to a damaged harbor;
• Immediately carry out a bathymetric damage assessment of the harbor and submerged coastal infrastructures in order to help prioritize the rebuilding phase.
DriX can be fitted with a number of sensors so that it can fulfil this task. In this case, an interesting option is again the iXblue FLS 150.
