PROJECT #1
CALENDAR This semester, SOC and VSAR will work collaboratively on a digital media project for publication and public distribution. The production of a 2015 Calendar. This requires a community service commitment on your part.
GOAL
Work with local American Indian communities(i.e. CSUSM California Indian Culture and Sovereignty Center (CICSC), American Indian Student Alliance (AISA), tribal educators, etc…)

Promote role models and the
values of positive decision making to
American Indian students.

Create an excellent resource in presenting contemporary portraits and experiences of American Indian students.
“LEADING BY A GOOD EXAMPLE:PROMOTING HIGHER EDUCATION FOR TRIBAL YOUTH”
YOUR TASK IS TO DO THE FOLLOWING:
① Meet with designated AISA students, California Indian Alumni, educators, etc…
② Collect Permission forms
③ Interview them
④ SOC students will be responsible for providing all texts/narratives for the collaborative calendar. EDIT, REVIEW, EDIT, and EDIT SOME MORE!
⑤ SOC and VSAR students will work together to interview and photograph the participants
⑥ You may be asked to visit the CICSC on campus or attend AISA meetings
⑦ Attend/Volunteer the Dream The Impossible – Native Youth Conference on campus.
⑧ Your group will be assigned a VPA photographer(s) to work with it is up to you to schedule mutual times to accomplish your tasks by the due dates listed in the syllabus.
INTERVIEW SAMPLE QUESTIONS:
Name: Major: Tribal Affiliation: What are three words that best describe yourself? Who have been role models or positive influences in your
life? Which one accomplishment are you the most proud of?
Why? What is one obstacle that you’ve had to overcome in your
life? How were you able to overcome it? How did it change who you were/are?
What do you see as the purpose of an education? What unique challenges do Native American students
face? Do you have any ideas as to how to overcome these challenges?

POSTER CAMPAIGN This semester, NATV/SOC 348 American Indian Communties, Office of Diversity, Educational Equity, Inclusion and Ombud Services, Floyd Lai, Student Life & Leadership Associate Director/Multicultural Programs, Gregory Toya Interim Associate Dean, Student Life & Leadership, Robert Aiello-Hauser Director, LGBTQA Pride Center, Dr. Fredi Avalos-C'DebacaCommunicataions Professor & CSUSM Diversity and Multiculturalism Faculty Fellow, VPA Professor Deborah Small will work collaboratively on a digital media project for publication and public distribution of a CSUSM diversity and equity poster campaign.
REQUIREMENTS
Our class will work in groups to do the following:
1. 6 groups of 4 students
2. Will develop 2 posters each (celebrating cultural proficiency & humanity)
3. Groups that will be represented (Latino, American Indian, Black, Asian & LGBT)
4. Your group will must present 2 final posters for presentation to a larger committee
5. Winning posters will be selected and printed for campus-wide distribution
6. Our class will work with Professor Small’s photography students to set up photo shoots and will work with Professor Avalos Public Relations students on language and phrases.
7. Your group will be assigned a VPA photographer(s) to work with it is up to you to schedule mutual times to accomplish your tasks by the due dates listed in the syllabus.
