MAJOR PROJECTS MANAGEMENT OFFICE - WEST

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) is actively engaging with Indigenous communities to advance reconciliation, increase Indigenous participation in natural resource development, and foster economic development. NRCan is advancing this work throughout its portfolio.


SERVICES

§  Federal Geospatial Platform (FGP) – Maintains and shares geospatial (location-based) data, including data relevant to examining Indigenous issues (e.g. environmental and socio-economic data).

§  Indigenous Engagement for Federal, Provincial and Territorial Fora

§  Indigenous participation on international missions

PACIFIC FORESTRY CENTRE/CANADIAN FOREST SERVICE

PROGRAMS

§  Indigenous Forestry Initiative (IFI) – Supports economic development through natural resource sector participation.

SERVICES

§  The Dominion Coal Blocks (DCB) – Federally owned property in south-east British Columbia within the traditional territory of the Ktunaxa Nation and are an area of interest in treaty negotiations to carry out forest management.

§  Federal Land Program, Department of National Defence (DND) – Assists DND with management of their forested properties, and issues contracts with a local First Nation community to complete some forestry activities.

LANDS AND MINERALS

PROGRAMS

§  Geo-mapping for Energy and Minerals (GEM) Grant Program – Advances geological knowledge in the North to inform decision on land use. Currently exploring opportunities to better integrate Indigenous Traditional Knowledge.

SERVICES

§  Surveyor General Branch– Provides a system that regulates and registers legal surveys on Reserve lands, providing boundary and property rights certainty.

§  Geological Survey of Canada – Provide hazard assessments and monitoring in BC’s North Coast.

§  Aboriginal Tool Kit and Resources – Accessible information on the potential benefits, opportunities and impacts of mineral exploration and mining projects throughout the life cycle of a mineral project

§  Participant Funding Program (PFP) – Support Indigenous participation in engagement on natural resource projects.

§  Remote off-diesel renewable energy deployment

SERVICES

§  Workshops & Seminars – Support areas of interest suchs as pipeline safety, Canada-Mexico Indigenous collaboration opportunities and offshore oil and gas development.

§  Engagement – support Generation Energy and Pan-Canadian Framework consultations.

§  Green Infrastructure Program – Funding to clean energy infrastructure projects to reduce reliance on diesel on off-grid, remote and Norther communities.

§  Impact Canada Fund – Funding for breakthrough solutions to persistent challenges (e.g. reducing the use of fossil fuels in off-grid communities).

SERVICES

§  Clean Growth Hub – Improve coordination of federal clean technology activities.

§  Clean Technology and Clean Resources Tables – Indigenous clean technology stakeholders will be members of the Economic Strategy Tables.

§  Clean Energy Resources and Projects (CERP) – Interactive web mapping application that supports learning about Canada’s extensive clean-energy resources and projects.

§  Strategic Partnerships Initiative – West Coast Energy – Supports available to communities for jobs and growth, environmental action, fish habitat restoration, and engagement.

SERVICES

§  Engagement – Early and ongoing engagement with Indigenous communities on energy infrastructure development

§  Indigenous Advisory and Monitoring Committees – Co-development and establishment of Committees to support communities potentially impacted by energy infrastructure development.
